This reminded me that time someone started a thread on twitter saying that since portuguese, french, spanish and italian are sibling languages everyone should be able to understand each other. Suddenly the whole thread was full of portuguese, french, spanish, latinamericans and italians talking in their own language but everyone understanding perfectly what the others were saying. Was really wholesome.

Now imagine that Japanese and Korean both join the chat, or maybe they are hanging out together somewhere in public. They do not know each other's languages, but somehow they discover that they both speak Mandarin fluently enough and so they switch to speaking Mandarin because Japanese guy doesn't know Korean and Korean guy cannot speak Japanese, but they both speak Mandarin or Cantonese or something (I say this because it's more likely scenario though both also knowing Viet could happen)
As a Japanese, We basically use English to communicate with Korean or Chinese…or whoever. Even for most Japanese other Asian language is completely incomprehensible tbh

I feel like a lot of people in Europe have at least some understanding of a lot of European languages, seeing as there are a lot of land borders (and therefore cultural mixing) and the languages are similar. As a part-American I could probably have this sort of simple conversation in Spanish, and as a part-Russian I could probably do this sort of thing in German, French, or Ukrainian.
it is a long story that I think began with the Monnalisa case, then there was the 2006 World Cup where the French made fun of the Italians and then lost, and for a while the French began to say that their products are better than the Italian ones like cheese and wine, and we Italians are very attached to food so this stuff is very annoying and from this comes the "hatred" towards the French I hope the explanation is enough. However, I don't think that Italians insult the French in an offensive way, they do it because it's fun to do it and many tie themselves to 2006 to do it but hardly anyone with offensive intentions

I had an experience with some Italians, we did a skeleton fort together. Neither of us spoke a word of each other’s languages. We split up the loot into 2 piles and emoted to communicate. We got back on our boats to sell at the same place. Being a person who grew up in Italy and learnt French at middle school, I think I know the reason they both wanted to communicate in Spanish and it brings a smile on my face.
@@aleixs373 It's because almost everyone Italian can't pronounce properly French words and especially the French R. Whilst Spanish is much more similar to Italian, and also have the same R pronounce, Italians prefer Spanish over French. French people also struggle to communicate with others in French because they speak "too fast" and make the other guy misunderstand. They'd rather to speak Spanish while talking to Italians because they know it's a lot easier for both of them to communicate. And the reason it brings a smile on my face, I don't actually know, it just makes me smile. Or maybe there was a reason that I don't remember now
Plus the Spanish they are speaking is pretty much made up which makes it a lot funnier and in some terms Spanish is easier to speak for French and Italians. Of course there are a lot of people who can speak fluently English too, but we just prefer Spanish.

As I said elsewhere, this is more common than you may suspect and you basically just showed why. Now imagine that Japanese and Korean both join the chat, or maybe they are hanging out together somewhere in public. They do not know each other's languages, but somehow they discover that they both speak Mandarin fluently enough and so they switch to speaking Mandarin because Japanese guy doesn't know Korean and Korean guy cannot speak Japanese, but they both speak Mandarin or Cantonese or something (I say this because it's more likely scenario though both also knowing Viet could happen)
As a Japanese, We basically use English to communicate with Korean or Chinese…or whoever.
Even for most Japanese other Asian language is completely incomprehensible tbh

I feel like a lot of people in Europe have at least some understanding of a lot of European languages, seeing as there are a lot of land borders (and therefore cultural mixing) and the languages are similar.
As a part-American I could probably have this sort of simple conversation in Spanish, and as a part-Russian I could probably do this sort of thing in German, French, or Ukrainian.

it is a long story that I think began with the Monnalisa case, then there was the 2006 World Cup where the French made fun of the Italians and then lost, and for a while the French began to say that their products are better than the Italian ones like cheese and wine, and we Italians are very attached to food so this stuff is very annoying and from this comes the "hatred" towards the French I hope the explanation is enough. However, I don't think that Italians insult the French in an offensive way, they do it because it's fun to do it and many tie themselves to 2006 to do it but hardly anyone with offensive intentions

I had an experience with some Italians, we did a skeleton fort together. Neither of us spoke a word of each other’s languages. We split up the loot into 2 piles and emoted to communicate. We got back on our boats to sell at the same place. I’m below deck when I hear a “MAMA MIA!!!” I go back up top to see the front of their boat pointing at the heavens as they’ve just crashed into a rock 😂

Indeed. Most italians would get most of what a spanish speaker says, granted that he doesn't speak too fast. Whereas French is less mutually intelligible in a spoken form, espcially if you didn't study it at school.

@@aleixs373 It's because almost everyone Italian can't pronounce properly French words and especially the French R. Whilst Spanish is much more similar to Italian, and also have the same R pronounce, Italians prefer Spanish over French.
French people also struggle to communicate with others in French because they speak "too fast" and make the other guy misunderstand. They'd rather to speak Spanish while talking to Italians because they know it's a lot easier for both of them to communicate. And the reason it brings a smile on my face, I don't actually know, it just makes me smile. Or maybe there was a reason that I don't remember now
Plus the Spanish they are speaking is pretty much made up which makes it a lot funnier and in some terms Spanish is easier to speak for French and Italians. Of course there are a lot of people who can speak fluently English too, but we just prefer Spanish.
