The S40 is my first bike. I spent a lot of time researching and 2 years later I'm flat out happy I chose the S40. Not only does it have the power to cruise in and out of the city, but also is so simple to get familiar with the mechanics of a motorcycle.
Thanks for the video. Ride safe, and get yourself some safety gear. Specially if you get on the highway.

Single cylinder, carburated, air cooled...for a while, that was the old-school-est bike you could get brand-freakin new, aside from maybe a Royal Enfield... Shame they discontinued them recently.

Yes this is a beginner bike by Suzuki, but a lot of people in my demographic that being in my 50's have chosen this bike because of the easy ride and simplistic technology, great gas mileage and safety. Men an women in their 50's don't need or necessarily want speed just the joy of riding.

I have had a 2014 for a year, put nearly 8k miles on it, mostly cruising KY country roads with a Harley rider buddy. It's a fun bike, lite and easy to throw around. It will tool along for hours at 65. These big singles are not "fast", but 5-65 mph have quite adequate acceleration. You keep the rpms in the right range and all that big single torque makes for a pleasurable ride. I have been considering other bikes like the Vulcan, which I kind of like. But there is a lot to be said for a bike like the Savage once you have to start maintaining it. Price out a valve adjustment on a Vulcan. Yikes! I looked at a Bonnie, which I really like - damned if I am pulling 2 camshafts and fiddling around with shims just to set valves. Caveat, while the bike will do highway speeds easily and for as long as needed, I do that on non interstate roads. It's a light bike, which I like, but interstate surrounded by semis going 80? Not fun. Still that big single is pulling 100-200 pounds less than other similar displacement bikes. Which just makes it fun to ride. And you can't discount the reliability. It just keeps on going,

I used to build bikes. Harleys and Triumph choppers. There's something about a big single that I love, especially this savage motor. I don't want a huge bike to wrestle with, especially with my bad back, and I certainly don't want to go fast like when I was younger. I just want to enjoy the sunshine on a beautiful day, perhaps take it to work 20 miles away along with bombing around town. The problem is the engine will be revved out. Seat is fairly comfortable for me, but at 70 handlebars vibrate annoyingly causing hand fatigue. Handlebars could be just a bit further forward, same with foot controls. 50mpg is good. Had to tune the carb once, been reliable since. 8k miles. Really good bike with a fairly long run, but not a lot of model-specific aftermarket options.

I love the S 40 don't know why the call it a cruiser it is closer to a bobber. I have been riding for over 55 yr, bikes from 50 cc to well over 1000 cc and the S 40 still puts a smile on my face every time I take it out. The only draw back is the small tank, but as long as you top it up at the end of the ride or before you go on a long cruse you should be Ok for most people, but I do like to do, some long rides like 250 km to 400 km and like most bikes today that means filling up part way through the ride. But I also have a Versys X and that will get me around 450 km per tank, so it is my choice for the long runs. The S 40 is one of the most fun bikes I have had, Thinking about getting a second one, keep one stock and do some mods on the other. ( like a Bigger gas tank.) And I have heard that you can get a lot more out of the engine with out much work, but I don't think you need it. But if you could get some bags that look good on the S 40 would do that. I think the S 40 is a great all round ride, for beginner or seasoned riders, and one of the best for an old guy, light easy to handle, with more than enough power. If you are much over 6 ft you might have to change the seat, make it a little higher and move it back some. But at 5 ft 9 inches it fits me great. Thanks for the video.

tribulation138 there should be some, there is a whole forum for for this bike, you could make the conversion to chain, change the rear sprocket for a smaller one, your top speed will increase, but since the speedometer is conected to the gear box, your speedometer will tell you that you are going slower than what you actualy are, i think that you can also change some small parts (forgot their names) to further increase performance. Had a Suzuki 'Savage' and wow do I regret selling it! It was light, 'flickable', and had torque that would pull teeth from an elephant. Pulled up to a traffic light one day and a guy in a pickup truck pulled up beside me. While we waited for the light to change, he hollered out his window at me while holding a thumbs up, 'Man, I had one those things. NOTHING could beat it across an intersection!' And, that was so true. 'One lungers' (aka 'thumpers') max their torque curve right off the line .. you witnessed that in the video. But for those first few seconds (racing at a traffic light) almost nothing, and I do mean almost nothing, is as fast. Once across the intersection and the torque curve peaks, they run out of oomph. But for those firts few seconds, they own the street. I miss my Savage a lot, and for the little I paid for it, I was a fool to sell it. Nothing like a Honda 'Savage'!

I'd love to come over the atlantic just to cruise along the endless miles of highway, which your beautiful country sports, with a bike that makes me look like one of you, on the first glance at least.
Here in Germany we have to endure a lot of cramped traffic, due to those natural, old cities never beeing intended for any kind of motorized locomotion. My city for example dates back to the 11th century, where it was first mentioned.
Even the country roads have traffic lights around here, if one side of the road is damaged and beyond rapair. You will find yourself going from 60 mp/h to a frustrating full stop before you know it.

I've been wanting a new Royal Enfield 350. They weigh more than these and are slower. Since I can't afford a new one now, I may as well find a used S40 to save money and go faster. The decision to buy hasn't happened but it will. For now I commute 40 miles a day on a 125 cc scooter with a top speed of 54 mph. The engine is screaming but still not at redline. Most scooters can't hit redline at top speed because they don't have the horsepower. That's a good thing that prevents blowing the engines. Still, I heard this 650 at 70 mph and it is just humming along with no strain. I would like that.

My GF just got one of these as a first bike. I rode it home for about 45 minutes. A few thoughts:
    - definetly able to keep up on the freeway, but it HATES going above 70. Very vibrational.
    - compared to a rebel, its definetly faster and more capable, but fit and finish is not as nice. The rebel feels more flickable and fun to rev out. They definetly have their own feel.
    - brakes are quite bad. Single piston front disk and drum rear. Stops worse than a rebel. This isn't a terrible thing for a beginner, as it really teaches you to break. On the freeway? Feels a bit sketchy.
I kinda love this bike for how bizarre it is. Large engine, but very little power. Good torque, but low weight. For my 6' frame it's a bit tight, but absolutely more comfy than a small sport bike. Great bike to learn on, but for me I prefer a rebel for learning the ropes.

I honestly didn't think anything would fit her other than the little 250 Honda Rebel back in the day. (I'm 53yrs young.) I just found out she picked up 650cc motorcycle and my heart sunk in my chest with fear that it would be too much bike for her being so green. At 19, my first and only motorcycle was a Yamaha Vision 550 and I could keep up with my best bud who had a Kawi GPZ1100 at speeds of 120mph+. I was as green as my sister is now when I picked up the Vision back in 1989. On paper it was a smaller engine bike than what my sister just bought and I soon realized it was way too much power for a Noob like me that was trying to keep up with a bunch of very experienced riders that were driving bikes with double to triple the cc's of my motorcycle. Long story short, I went way too fast one night and crashed my bike and have been in a wheelchair paralyzed from the chest down since the age of 19. I worry that the same fate would befall my sister. This video showing this Suzuki as pretty much gutless compared to my 550 has quelled my fears and looks like an excellent choice for a short beginner like my sister. Thanks for the vid. I'm now trying to convince my sister not to skimp on the protective riding gear. I hope she listens and has more brains than balls unlike her little brother.

Sorry to hear about your Injury.
I would not worry about it in terms of power.
It's two very different engines the 550 has around 60hp while the Savage goes to 36hp, so roughly half the power.
      Topspeed is 80 mph roughly.
Usually, women are a bit smarter than us men when it comes to chasing adrenaline, and she is a lot older than when you drove.
Do you drive anything similar to a motorcycle these days like a 3 wheeler or ATV?
Would you ride a bike again if you could?

Mines Bobbed out, a little tweak here and there, nothing trick. I’ve hit the 85-90 mark on mine, but it was like riding a Mule at the Kentucky Derby. It’s a Bobber, not a Dragster. The single fishtail exhaust never lets anyone consider how fast. It screams, cracks, and pops like a $2 machine Gun at the Shooters Gallery Booth at the State Fair🤘🏼

Aaaaah, the Suzuki LS650P Savage, the '98 model of which was my first "big" bike (bought it in 2007) - and I still have it. Haven't ridden it since 2012, though.. I think I might invest some spare time putting the bike to shape; probably during this winter.
Its only flaw is the exhaust system mounting (in front of the cylinder), which always gets slightly loose and starts leaking oil, but otherwise, is there's anything wrong with the engine, it can be figured out on the fly. On the positive side, I like the belt drive, which adds that pleasant smoothness to the ride itself. The original handlebars are indeed a bit narrower than optimal - but who am I to say, when I bought the Savage, it already had T-shaped 110cm long (aka wide) LSLs 😀

Suzuki 2012 s40 is my first bike and i love it..however it is not a "highway" bike but it is great for short commutes and general cruising. My experience is anything after 60mph it feels like engine is at its peak and considerable vibration on ride. Its a totally stock s40 though..

Dude, I gave you a thumbs up but have you got something against using your turn signals😎. I found this extremely helpful because I'm looking at getting a Shadow, Rebel 500, or this S40. Single exhaust, no radiator, very simple...just like me. Not sure about a belt-drive though... I've had shaft drives and chain. This helped me make up my mind. Now I'm looking for a good used one. Unlike a car,you really can't take a bike out from a dealer on a test drive. Be safe amigo!(s)

Make a bike that looks like a baby M109 with the SV 650 engine and call it a M40. I think a small fast V twin cruiser would practically sell itself. It'd be faster and sound better than a kawi Vulcan S 650 or Honda rebel 500

Some Dude That’s why Ohio is a laughingstock. Here in Michigan we don’t do that. Your ass better be merging in with traffic at the speed they’re going or otherwise you’ll be ran off the road. But there’s no speed limit on an on ramp like Kenneth said. I’ve seen some states with stoplights at the beginning of the ramp to stagger cars during rush hour. It’s their job to hit they accelerator and merge into the cars on the highway that legally have the right of way.

It has a good powerband so it can keep up with traffic. If you feel the need for speed or areinto dragracing, you are not hopping on the right bike
