Little note about the gas knob, or lever or whatever you want to call it ;) the way that the fuel system works on the s40/savage is by pressure. The engine creates negative pressure when running which "pulls" the fuel from the tank to the carburator. When the engine is not running the fuel is still. this prevents any fuel from dripping out anywhere, when the lever isset to on. Prime however lets the fuel flow. now gravity lets the fuel from the tank to the carb. I would only use prime for a first startup after a winter season where the bike has not been running for several months. And only if it will not start in the on position. A little note as well. Putting the lever in prime will not only empty your main gas tank but also you reserve. This means that when you eventually run out of gas, you are out for good ;) I love the Suzuki s40/Savage, it is a great little bike. Perfectly shaped. It is not much, but it presents itself very well! Have a nice day everyone!
The fuel switch thing is the petcock, and PRI means prime. You flip it to prime and it fills the carburetor bowl with fuel, making it easier to start. Also a great way to identify potential vacuum issues if your bike doesn't run in the On position. Thanks for the vid!
@@smugmode Because if you run it on "prime" or "reserve" there's no way to know that you're running out of gas. You also want to shut it off when you park. Gas expands when it gets hot. It will flood your carburetor and cause vapor lock.
The yellow switch on the left bar is your passing high beams, or just to flash your high beam quickly. never put more oil in these than you need, if you don't have any leaks, add just enough, or you're robbing economy and hp, so you want to stay between low and high level, any more adds additional friction. The "thingy" is called a "petcock", and it should be the first thing you replace on these, they're all faulty, next should be the cam chain tensioner(look it up). Other than that and a few other things that will make this comment too long to read, just have fun! :D these are great bikes, and incredibly reliable, light, fuel efficient, and one of the best sounding cruisers out there. enjoy! Thanks so much! I was looking for a video exactly like this! I want to buy a Suzuki Boulevard S40 2014 and I wanted to her a good short explanation. Very helpful!
thanks , I like to work in my car now thanks to you will start doing basic maintenance in the bike too.Could u share any other video about other parts.I don't trust some mechanics who would use used parts, replace original ones or over charge a lot. Really thankful for sharing your knowledge.
Wonder if you could replace that wimpy disc horn with a more louder electric horn found on most Harley Davidsons? Pretty sure it would be an easy upgrade.
You come up to Canada and start your bike and ride it around in 2 or 3 feet of snow, in - 20 deg. would like to see that. I will only ride mine when the roads are clean and above freezing. Every 2 or 3 weeks good luck up hear.
That is a super clean s40/ls650 omg she's a bute. I am also wondering where I can get another gas cap for this bike I have lost my key and I just can't find an aftermarket gascap for this bike.
Hello and thank you very much for this simple explanation of basic things. It's been many a yr for me since I have ridden. Just got blessed with a great deal on a 2008 S40.... ~The bike won't start after sitting for a week.... Will go out and try again, after putting it neutral as per your video.... Will let you know in a minute if that worked... ~~Also please anyone - What is the yellow switch for? It's above left grip on front side of bike. Also the emergency stop switch - red one by throttle - I presume it is in on position being down, as is yours in this video? On as in, ready to engage, if needed, by pressing top portion down to kill engine? Is that rt? Tysm! .... Back in a few....
Okay update.... Put bike in neutral, pulled out choke, put emergency kill switch in its proper place, tried to start bike. It wouldn't. Put gas in PRI as per another post below and it worked as far as bike trying to turn over, finally. But it refused to stay running dammit... Put gas back to on, kept trying to start it both with choke on then off, nope. Dammit. So bike refuses to start up... It tries but that's all. May have flooded it.... Will try again in a little bit. ~Thank you again for your video and to all who added valuable info below. 👍☺
On mine, positive is on the right side as you're sitting on it looking forward. Good way to tell is by using a test light or voltmeter with one probe on terminal and other on ground
+ErikJ7228 The brass device is to check the tension of the drive belt. In theory you should make sure that only one line is showing but in practice if you can twist the belt 90 degrees it is at the right tension.
OK anytime your not running you bike you need to turn that gas petcock off. Sometimes the float in the carb will stick and then gas will free flow and thats not a good thing!
don black for the Suzuki S40 you don’t need to turn it off. It’s a vacuum Petcock which means that it goes off automatically when you turn the bike off.

HardRockFairytale thanks for the helpful info
Thanks for the heads up. I’m thinking of buying on here in Mexico...new 2020, $5,700.00 US. includes all taxes and fees.

Running the bike with the cock "on" until it sputters then switching to "reserve" is SOP on bikes with carbs.
@@nimbly1693 Why is that standard?

My petcock has down on, left fuel, right(doesn't turn that way for some reason) prime, up is reserve😅
Mine has to be on prime to operate

I just got me the s40 .never new it had handle bar lock..thanks another keep up the work...
😂 You are brave to describe things on the bike without any knowledge about it! 😂😂😂
Delightful and simple, love it .

Have you gotten one yet? I might get one in 2 weeks
Thanks for the video!! I just paid the deposit to reserve a 2019 and I was having a heck of a time figuring out if it had a halmet lock and reserve.
I have one of these an 2005 to be exact but you have to always pull the clutch in to start the bike or it won't start
I have a feeling this is this guys very first bike ^^

Buckhorn handlebars would make that bike look a lot better.
You're gonna send me a disc lock? Thank you! When can I expect it to arrive?
What size are your saddle bags and do you need supports?

@@DLionheart Hi, what ended up happening or being the fix? (I'd like to know for my similar issue)
@@josephabboud1151 I jumped it with my pickup truck. Started right up. 😉
So where is the spare gas tank or is it separated inside the normal tank and how do you fill both up
Adam Clark It's separated inside the normal tank, so there's just one single gas nozzle hole thingy.
Ok that makes sense thanks
Would this bike fit me? I'm 5'5, or I am stuck with the Honda Rebel as my only option?
from what I've been reading you should be able to with ease.. go out and get on one
I'm 5'3" too and love my boulevard. Read that some guys over 6' use as starter bike ☺
Sight glass is the other word you were looking for
Can someone confirm, right side of the engine is positive. Left side negative.
Trying to place a battery tender

You would be correct. Left side is the negative and the right side is positive.

valve adjustments?
This bike has no check engine light? How do you know if there is a problem with the bike without the check engine light?

Where I the off position? My 2009 Blvd s40 does not have an off position on it. On , reserve and prime only.
