The name alone gives the place a grim feel. Then to learn about the plauge victims being kept there just adds to it. Very well filmed. Thank you for sharing this footage and showing us black tower. Keep safe
Passed by sections of this wall on many occasions and everytime I say how we must walk it all one day.. Still not got round to it.. So interesting, and such a great video, you captured it all so beautifully 😊👍
Thanks so much for commenting guys. I’ve done a few videos of the walls now but I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of the Carrow Hill section, it really is spectacular down there with the Black Tower the highlight. I’ve since found out that the vault type structure at the back of the Western Boom Tower (where the wall crossed the river) is actually a beehive coking oven. I had a gentleman comment on my post who used to live in the property next to the river who’s garden backed onto the western boom tower. He said it was the last surviving beehive coking oven in England and is grade one listed. It’s a fascinating structure but sadly is being neglected as is the house gentleman lived in, which now lays derelict.
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Yes I think we've also watched all your previous Norwich Wall videos, they just keep getting better and better.. They appear to be kept alot better than the wall we have here in Yarmouth but with alot of these places there's always room for improvement especially with how historically important they are.. Keep up the great work 👍
Great film, it's amazing how we walk past interesting places all the time without realizing they are there. In Norwich many such places will be hidden below your feet too...
Thank-you for watching the video and taking the time to comment. This remaining section of the old city walls around Carrow Hill is spectacular and very well hidden so not widely known about. It’s not really the sort of place you’d stumble across. It’s such a quiet spot and usually you don’t encounter another soul down there. A real hidden treasure 🙂
Thanks John really appreciate you tuning in - the Carrow Hill section of the old city walls is particularly beautiful. So peaceful now and rarely visited it seems 🙂
Cheers Michael always appreciate you tuning in and commenting. It’s wonderful that there are some parts of the old city walls still remaining and the Carrow Hill section is particularly spectacular!
Thanks so much Kathy for taking the time to watch the video and leave such kind comments 🙂 - i love visiting the old city walls of Norwich particularly the Carrow Hill section - always so quiet around there - almost let stepping back in time and into the past for a brief period of time
Hi Alex - hope you are well - I visited lots of places on heritage open days this year which will be coming up on the channel at some point soon. On this occasion though access to Black Tower was kindly granted while it was being routinely cleared of rubbish much like Cow Tower is routinely cleared of litter too. Why people feel the need to discard beer bottles and other unmentionables into such beautiful historic buildings I will never understand.
I haven’t been back to Norwich in a long time. I spent most of my late teens and twenties there. Is this up next to Mousehold Heath somewhere? I’d really appreciate it if you could make a video at the ruined mill on the other side of the lake from Blickling Hall. We used to sneak into it as kids, but I think it’s overgrown now.
Hi, I’ve heard of the mausoleum at Blickling Hall but not the mill - cheers for the tip - I’ll have to do some research as to whether it’s still there or accessible or not? I’ll probably combine it with a trip to the hall and the mausoleum sometime. Thanks for tuning in 🙂
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk I’m very well thank you. Uploading on my 2nd account and watching this video while waiting 😅 Hope you’re ok and had a great summer.
Cheers guys it is quite well hidden and not widely known about - it’s not a place you would stumble across hence why it’s relatively unknown - it’s an amazing place and so quiet - a real hidden gem!
The legend goes that Cow Tower got its name, or rather nickname, after it was converted for use by the garrison. One day, a cow strayed from the cattle market. Whether it was en route to the market, or already there, is not known. Anyway, the city guard were relaxing on the upper floors, when one of them got a shock. He discovered the cow climbing the narrow spiral staircase! Which, unfortunately for the cow, had become stuck in the stairwell between the upper floors, trapping itself & the guard on the top floor. The men had no choice but to try & release the cow, lifting & carrying it (very slowly!) back down the stairs. Making the cow into beef steaks in such a tiny, tight space inside the tower didn't really appeal to any of the men. This was their home from home after all! The reported length of time it took for the guard to free & release the cow varies. Some versions say the cow was released quickly, others hours! What happened to the freed cow after its ordeal is not known. Nor is it known if this legend is true, completely fabricated, or a combination of fact & myth, with embellishments added to over the years.
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk I only heard it recently myself. Like I said, I have no idea if it's true or not, or completely made up, or a little bit of both, but I thought it was still a good story. It's not that outlandish to have at least a kernel of truth to it. It's not like wildlife or livestock have never been seen to get into all kind of weird or unexpected places before. We saw that during lockdown, when many cities saw flocks of wild grazing sheep roaming the streets, or herds of deer having a good nosey at the empty streets!
loved this video, having been born and bred in norwich, its ancient history intrigues me. I now live behind the tower situated on corner of Bull close road and silver road junction, it feels special to be so close to it.
Hi Linda - nice time hear from you again. You are fortunate to live so close to one of the few remaining towers, “offering views of the old city walls” will add a few thousand to your house price too - people love a bit of history🙂
Brilliant video. I had no idea any of that was there in Norwich. Is it a loud/busy area where the Black Tower is? Was wondering how suitable it would be for an investigation. Looking forwards to your next video
Hi Luke nice to hear from you and thanks for tuning in. I’ve visited the Carrow Hill section of the old city walls numerous times and on this occasion I was fortunate to be passing by while it was routinely being cleared of rubbish and was kindly granted access to the inside. Black Tower itself is spectacular and the history of the building being used as a pest house to imprison plague sufferers is not widely known but was certainly the case. It sadly would be a place where many people met a pretty gruesome demise spending their last days huddled together in pretty unsanitary conditions. Investigation wise it is certainly quiet enough - each time I’ve been down there I’ve never encountered a soul until the most recent time when it was being cleared of rubbish. The entrance door to what would have been the dungeon section (lower level) is locked but it is grilled so you would be able to place an EVP recorder into the building where the staircase is. Considering this building is located in the city centre it is surprisingly quiet with limited traffic noise in the distance. For those reading these comments who may not be aware what an EVP is. It stands for electronic voice phenomenon. EVP equipment is basically an audio recorder to which you can ask questions out-loud and sometimes on playback voices can be heard answering questions which weren’t audibly distinguishable at the time. I have encountered a few examples of EVP on my travels over the past few years - it is relatively rare but can happen - see the following video link - Voices From Beyond -The Evidence So Far -Thetford Warren Lodge, Walsingham Bridewell & Santon Church ua-cam.com/video/Yzfad0s_i7U/v-deo.html Cheers again for your interest Luke - kind regards Edward
Surprising how quiet it is considering it’s basically in the city centre - looks particularly ruinous in the summer months with the surrounding vegetation in full bloom

Thank-you - it is a magical looking building as a ruin but in terms of history it has quite a dark past - always appreciate the comments
