The Shrieking Pits of Aylmerton & Northrepps, two female apparitions are believed to haunt the sites
The Aylmerton Cross monument marks the spot where an ancient cross was situated once used by pilgrims on route to Walsingham Shrine. Visible in the fields behind are numerous shallow pits. Known locally as “Shrieking Pits” because of their reputation of being haunted by a ghostly lady dressed in white crying out for her lost baby. Her husband allegedly killed the baby thinking he wasn’t the father and buried the infant in one of the pits before going back to murder his wife. The lady spirit has allegedly been witnessed on multiple occasions as she frantically searches the pits crying out for her lost baby. Local folklore suggests a secret tunnel leads from Aylmerton Cross to the 13th century ruins of Beeston Regis Priory and within this tunnel a “golden calf” is hidden. Many religious relics and priceless artefacts were hidden from Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries period to prevent them being stolen and monetised. Beeston Regis Priory was dissolved in 1536 and is reportedly haunted by a hooded grey spirit thought to be an over protective monk. Nearby to the “Shrieking Pits” of Aylmerton is another water filled hollow at Northrepps. Here too is supposedly haunted by a young lady. Esmeralda had a secret relationship with a married farmer but when the local clergy learned of this affair they were warned to end it immediately and the farmer agreed. Esmeralda was heartbroken and plunged herself into the Northrepps pit. She quickly regretted her decision and tried desperately to escape but her calls for help were unheard. It is rumoured her screams can still be heard on the anniversary of her death on the evening of 24th February each year.

Poppies Great Massingham - field left to nature after rewilding project results in vivid sea of red!

The village of Great Massingham lies in the heart of the west Norfolk countryside. Nestled within the meadow lies one of the most dramatic sights in East Anglia. A mesmerising field of red poppies. The poppy is a very recognisable bright wildflower with its colour symbolising remembrance from the World War. Due to modern day farming techniques and herbicide spray the wildflower is now usually o...

Grade One Listed St Bartholomew's is a grand perpendicular church. The tall tower stands proud across the landscape. Constructed between 1370 and 1460 it is located in the small village of Brisley which is located between Dereham and Fakenham. The crypt under the chancel still has its original medieval door. Behind this old oak door are some stone steps to the chamber below. The crypt is though...

They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today's Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul's Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The catacombs were event...

    Sounds like a bird call to me, sounds weird in the second clip because of all the post-processing. The rest kind of sounds like rain hitting the mic capsule and wind.

      Hi, thank-you for commenting. The footage was filmed over a few visits and the time the recording in the crypt took place was on a calm and sunny day so there was no rain or significant wind as the camera was perched inside the vault. There wasn't any wildlife inside the crypt or nearby - I had a clear view of the camera at all times from the graveyard and left it running undisturbed for a few minutes - I appreciate everyone has their point of view though - so no worries as to any theories

    Croxton has clearly been burnt and vandalised quite recently; it is in an appalling state! The other church is at Saxlingham THORPE near to Seaxlingham Nethergate, where the latter has its own church, far from ruinous.

      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk 13 днів тому

      Hi Simon - terrible to hear of the damage to the church ruin of Croxton - such a shame that places like this often don’t get the respect they deserve. Saxlingham Thorpe is correct rather than Saxlingham Nethergate - typing error there which I was aware of some time ago but unable to correct once the video has gone live sadly. Thanks for tuning in

    So I take it that what I was told about the old Tombland toilets being an air raid shelter was true then. Apparently after the war the council didn’t know what to do with it, so built toilets in there, and the sloped walls around the top were built to remember the shape of the sandbags piled up around the entrance. Absolutely crazy that they removed those top walls, it could have been made into a flower bed or something, so that it could still represent the air raid shelter entrance as a tribute. Norwich Council not giving a damn about Norwich history yet again.

    • @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk 16 днів тому

      It is a shame more of these historic places aren’t cherished. Parts of the old city walls still stand in areas, but despite being in decline the section around Carrow Hill is still spectacular. The air raid shelter featured in the video is located near to the cathedral and is sometimes part of the Norfolk Heritage Open Days held every September 🙂

    Just uploaded a short video of when me and a former friend visited there in June 2017. I never ended up uploading it to my channel for whatever reason. • @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk 16 днів тому

      Hi - it is a devastating shame to lose such an iconic building in such a manner. The top floor was in remarkably good condition - I think it was saved by the fact the staircase was removed many years ago so explorers were never able to gain access so easily. I think there was possibly a basement / cellars underneath too but these probably got filled with rubble after the building was sadly demolished

It’s such an unassuming place when you drive through and then to find out that it has such history to it is incredible really. We’ve often said ‘look at that church just stood in the middle of nowhere’ and add it to the list of places to visit. Had no idea about there being an RAF base there but then, it shouldn’t be a surprise as there were so many over East Anglia. I’m sure the information about all the RAF bases is available but, from our point of view, don’t know about most of them. Thank-you - you should definitely visit - the first time I visited the crypt was dusk one evening with failing light and when I reached the bottom of the steps my torch all of a sudden went dead so I was left in complete darkness. The torch was fully charged earlier that day and it was the first time I used it. It was quite a strange and unsettling experience. It is widely theorised in paranormal circles this could be a sign spirit is drawing energy in an attempt of direct communication - however I heard no voices but exited the crypt rather hastily. After this I left the phone camera running in the crypt and turned the lights on - meanwhile I sat in silence in the church - I thought this was worthwhile after the torch incident just to see if anything would show on camera or if I could capture any movements / voices in the crypt but on playback there was nothing to be seen or heard. Definitely worthy of an investigation though

    Incredible place to visit, also the underground tunnels in Valetta make an interesting tour. Malta was the most bombed country in ww2, the history and connection with the UK is amazing.

      Thanks 🙂 - yes it was heavily targeted during World War 2 because of its location and links to the UK but amazingly for such a tiny island it was never invaded - loads to explore and a very historic place - lots of folklore - it is also rumoured to have a hidden underworld where giants live!

    Those who know their Bibles see the devil's game. Devils can impersonate anyone. This is why the LORD commanded to have nothing to do with the dead! Moses in Deuteronomy 18:9-13 lists every cultic practice that plays the world the fool! The world's wisest man to ever live, King Solomon said it plain enough: "the dead know not any thing," "for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave;" and thus "shall be as though they had never been." This is why the Bible calls death "sleep." Everyone sleeps "the sleep of death" until the resurrection, "for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ."

    No crickets? No bug noises? No wind? Seems very odd that its so quiet.

      It was exceptionally quiet on the night - I remember there being a few bats fluttering around the tower - otherwise dead silent - strange as you say considering it is located in woodland so you think there would be a few more wildlife sounds - there are no roads nearby so traffic noise either

    Dunwich is not the Grey-friars alone. I think Dunwich was the port from the Rhine. On the edge of the Rhine was a Roman tradingplace called Brittenburg (now near Katwijk aan de zee also lost in the sea). Dunwich was as important as London in their times. There should be a roman fort in Dunwich.

      Hi Dunwich is an amazing place and was a hugely important port. Greyfriars Priory is one of a few places I explore in the video along with the Leper Chapel within the graveyard of St James’s Church - there is an enchanting small bridge structure too in Greyfriar’s Wood which was originally built to link the grounds of the nearby Victorian mansion to the priory ruins. The footpath which runs under the bridge was previously Middlegate Street, an original medieval road which linked to the town.
