I love how the film starts with the person he saves reacting to him with fear, and ends with the person he saves clinging to him, requiring his reassurance. It’s clear he doesn’t know how to react to the way she looks at him, and it makes him rethink everything he’s been doing. It’s such incredible emotional filmmaking where everything comes together with incredible care to make you know everything going on in his head at all times.

That could have played out any number of ways, and while I don't think this was the case, it just sounds as if everything, all the riddles and clues, was all for the sole purpose of getting Batman to lead him outside so he could shoot him, which makes no sense because he could have shot him at any number of other times and places. This is such an underrated film. The whole singular idea, by Matt Reeves, that this is a man who is unhinged and unhealthily obsessed with fighting the criminal element at night who is constantly beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands and with his unlimited amount of vast resources at his disposal. All he sees in the criminal element, in this corrupt town that his family helped to build and found dating back to the late 1800s, are the people who killed his parents as a young child making him an orphan.
So, he dons the mantle of that which he fears the most, in the form of the Batman, after training for the majority of his life to rid his city of the evil that took his parent's lives. He dosen't know who was responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne so every criminal he sees, to him, is the criminal that killed his parents on that fateful night when he was only 10 years old. He is addicted to this mission, like a drug, so as both Bruce and Batman, he spends all of his time, trying to succeed in this impossible task he has set up for himself. That's why he never sees the light of day as Billionaire Bruce Wayne and is a social outcast and pariah. He is a man driven by vengeance; by revenge. By the end of this journey, as we see Bruce on a physical, mental, emotional and psychological level and transform from a young, naive, impatient man who makes mistakes still early in his career as a crime fighter we see him then become something else by the end...a symbol of hope, an ideal, a form of inspiration that makes criminals terrified to step out at night and commit their atrocities that makes Gotham City one of the worst places to call home. A city with a history and a foundation steeped in corruption and crime that ties back to the Wayne family and and their vast fortune. It also plants the seeds that will give him the inspiration to step out in the light of day to transform into the billionaire, playboy industrialist more interested in dating models and driving fast cars in order to hide in plain sight so no one would be able to distinguish Bruce Wayme is actually the Batman. A man consumed by vengeance who transforms into a symbol of hope. Obviously a film inspired by the comic book mythos and Arkham video game series and Batman animated series from the 1990s.
Ironically, a film consisting of character arc transformations and worldbuilding moments that is actually one of the most faithful Batman comic book movies to the original source material in the 1940s. Such as Detective comics issue 27 from 1937 and batman issue 1 in 1940 created by Bob kane, Bill finger and Jerry Robinson.
Then, the new 52 comics such as court of owls and Zero year by tomeu morey, john ottley, Jim lee, Scott Snyder. Batman year one by jim lee, David Mazuchelli and Frank miller as well as Batman: the long halloween and Batman: ego and other tales. This essay is lterally just scratching the surface of why it's actually one of the best batman films yet up their with the likes of the Dark knight from 2008.

The Batman edged out the Dark Knight as best Batman flick in my opinion. Dano brought just as much gravitas to his role as Ledger did, granted Ledger got some boosted legend status as he passed away before release. Bale's Batman seems almost comical now compared to Pattison. It's hard to move past Bale's Batman voice...It's absurd at times and I wish someone would have told him to hold back a bit. I really enjoyed how Reeve's starts Batman off with a gang of thugs laughing at him, because how absurd a dude dressing up like a bat is. The next scene is a bunch of cops being like WTF is this dude, thinking he's mentally deranged as Batman takes in the crime scene without saying more than a few words. Versus Nolan's Batman is instantly a ninja who is can do anything practically, and everyone seems okay with it. With The Batman, you're made aware of his short comings while also hinting at what a badass the dude is. There's no stupid voice. He is silent and takes in everything methodically. Sometimes not saying a thing, but allowing the music and acting to piece together a scene. He feels like Batman, and Bruce feels like the alter ego. I've seen it twice and now and the second viewing really cemented how good this film is. There are a few things that were meh, like Alfred and Bruce's relationship seemed sparse and forced when needed. But god damn did Reeve's write Batman correctly. One scene comes to mind when he is fitting Selena with contact lens cameras to spy inside the Iceberg Lounge for him, and she expresses concern that he doesn't care about her well being. He approaches her slowly and says look at me, with a long pause as he looks her in the eyes. Only to reveal he was making sure the contact lens were in correctly versus comforting her. It was excellent. One of the many scenes that felt very Batman like. Also, thank god for the zero scenes showing his parents dying and all that training garbage. We get right into it from minute one.

Without Ledger's portrayal as the Joker, it's actually just above mediocre. Keep up the great work!👍 👏

While Nolan’s take on the world arguably has more realism, I’d argue that the *people* behave more realistically in Reeves’ version than Nolan’s (which is fine, and I also love Nolan’s more idealised style with his characters). Especially Catwoman; Nolan’s female characters - in any of his movies - don’t feel real to another female; they tend to feel like ‘what a man thinks a woman is like’. And that’s from a female Nolan fan! By contrast , while Catwoman obviously defies physics somewhat which is forgivable in a comic book movie, Selina the character feels like a woman, to another woman.

The Riddler is a school shooter who grew up and is ridiculously smart.
And honestly, I kinda love that. It makes sense that The Riddler would become that in the real world as a serial killer. And when we see him without the mask hes exactly what I expect from the Riddler, right down to his freak out when the rug is pulled from under him and his use of the riddle once his sense of superiority is restored. And I LOVE the fact that he doesnt know Bruce is Batman because his delusional mind won't let him even come to the idea that someone he despises and feels so superior to (Bruce Wayne isn't a REAL orphan) is the same person as someone who he sees as a near equal (Batman). His need to maintain his intellectual superiority simply won't allow it

@@hoover728 The film, directed by Matt Reeves, wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. Development began after Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2013. Affleck signed on to direct, produce, co-write, and star in The Batman, but had reservations about the project and dropped out. Reeves took over and reworked the story, removing the DCEU connections. He sought to explore Batman's detective side more than previous films, drawing inspiration from the films of Alfred Hitchcock and the New Hollywood era, and comics such as "Year One" (1987), The Long Halloween (1996-97), and Ego (2000).
I happen to be a published writer myself. From submitting the galleys of a book, to distribution on the market can take three to four years; that's not counting the years it sometimes takes to write a novel. A movie script is three or four times more daunting of a task. So, there is no way to pin-down the exact time of creation in the mind of its author(s). Suffice to say it was based on previous stories from the comic.
And besides, my question was rhetorical. So, if your youthful, ridged, liberal nose was tweaked, good. Maybe it should be.

I supplied you with a fact based timeline and you respond with some bloviation about artistic inspiration based on your prodigious writing career and then suddenly pivot to it all being based on comics. Face it: you were utterly wrong when you said Matt Reeves started development in 2013. He wasn't involved in the project until 2015 and didn't start writing until 2017.
And finally, to go back to the beginning with your insinuation that Gotham is a mirror of Biden America: Reeves is one of the liberals that you despise and has made known his disdain for trump in no uncertain terms. If the sleaze, graft, corruption, and perversion of Gotham are resonant of any political era, it's definitely trump's.

Riddler is the scariest villain we have ever seen in Batman movies? Heath Ledger's performance made me so nervous and anxious. Joker in The Dark Knight is the scariest Batman villain in Batman movies. Then Tom Hardy too intimidated me. Riddler comes at third place regarding being scary. But of course everyone has their own preferances. Don't get me wrong though Paul Dano as Riddler was amazing. But really..Joker was more unnerving, more scary. Riddler is the most chilling? Again Joker is the most chilling followed by Bane. :) I mean Joker gave me goosebumps, made my hair stand on. Riddler was not Joker level scary.

I love the videos you've been putting out on The Batman, but something I've noticed in a lot of coverage is people calling The Riddler an incel, when he clearly isn't portrayed as one. Not at any point of the movie does Riddler show an interest in finding a romantic partner or bemoan the fact he can't attract one. He doesn't actively target women exclusively, nor seemly care about his male victim's perceived sexual prowess. I'm not trying to defend the incel ideology here, but words matter and shouldn't be thrown around with no care for their actual meaning. Just something to think about.

I have seen some comments that had the word "realistic" in them. Are these people aware that Batman isn't realistic but a comicbook character. No man can realistically do what Batman does. The more realistic a Batman movie is, the worse it is. It needs to be as close to the comicbooks as it can be. The same with who Batman is. One thing for sure is he isn't 170lbs. Someone that small wouldn't last two nights in the streets of Gotham. Killer Croc would destroy him within a minute. Then eat him all up. Bane would never consider him a challenge worthy of spending time going after. What I don't understand, in all the other superhero movies, including Marvel, they get actors to play the characters as close to what the character does in the comics. Hell even the villians are. But with Batman, the one superhero that they have made the most in movies, they keep getting it wrong time and time again. Affleck was the only time they got it right. Batman is not 170lbs. He is 220lbs and big and ripped. He is agile and flexible. That is why to make it more realistic to this world can't be done. Big, ripped people are not usually agile and flexible. But in Batman's world, he is. Batman needs to man handle the bad guys like Affleck did in the warehouse fight scene in B v S. That was epic. I finally felt like I was watching a live action Batman. Pattinson is no doubt a very good actor. There is no question about that. But he is not the Batman. He definitely is not Bruce Wayne. The story may be better in this one but seeing a small Batman just ruins everything for me. Along with the bad casting of Batman, they got his suit wrong again. Way wrong, a freaking collar, are you kidding me. Batman wears dark grey and dark blue, not black. They haven't gotten the batmobile right since the first two with Keaton. Everyone since have sucked. Then just as big as them casting the wrong actor to play Batman, there is no Robin/Nightwing. The only two times they had him, they made him a whinny little bitch and that is not who Dick Grayson is. I don't know, I know movie Batman fans love it and that is because they really don't know who Batman is suppose to be and look like. I just wish Warner Bros would pull their heads out of their ass and do the greatest comicbook hero justice by doing it right. But I am not a movie Batman fan which there is nothing wrong with being, I am a real Batman fan.

This is a wildly bad and empty headed film. You expected this to at least be serviceable film but then are left wondering if every single person who wrote glowing review works for the production. Colin Farrell Paul Dano completely wasted and written horribly there was no real acting or anything interesting about Colin Farrell penguin other than the fact that it was Colin Farrell under all of that penguin-ness... the motivations the characters especially Catwoman become so convoluted and silly and misdirected that you can't tell why anybody's doing anything anymore. I didn't mind Pattinson, but he really wasn't Batman very much... and maybe the most glaring thing was the exposition dumping.. instead of figuring out how to roll out a movie they just have Commissioner Gordon give you 15 minutes of backstory explaining what happened.. The Riddles aren't interesting and the borrowed art Direction from previous films like seven are executed so badly and with such mediocrity that they probably just should have been staged differently. The only thing I really liked about it was how they dealt with the Batcave. Not to mention VC Andrews Gothic family bulshit..
