Hope you enjoy today's video essay. As I said, I like all types of comic book film, but more often than not we get a lot more (too much) of one type of film. The Batman like some of the other recent examples I listed is the different kind of comic book movie. So here's my reasons why I think we need more of them like The Batman.
No Way Home was a huge instant success, and people keep comparing The Batman to it and drawing conclusions, but NWH was such a smash hit because it was an one heck of an exciting thrill for Spider-Man fans, a once in a lifetime experience, but it will probably be remembered as just that, a fun novelty. The Batman is different, and a lot of people don’t know what to make of it, but I am confident that it will be beloved as time goes by for the classic that it is, the one true Batman film.
NWH was an entertaining movie. It was amazing being able to see my favorite actors back on the big screen. But when you really think about it, the plot seems forced. Some of the characters act in ways that don't seem natural. The real Dr. Strange would never have cast that magic spell for Peter Parker. He would have known better than to risk messing with the timeline. The Batman is a superior film.
100% i think, most of us think that, the batman is a masterpiece. That’s true that give it one yr or less and more people will love this. I’ve never seen a superhero movie like this which gives metaphorical sense to the characters and setting and the batman lore is complex as it already is. Eg batman saving the people from the flood, reminiscent of Moses and the sea. Batman saving the people of Gotham to the promise land of hope but in the Bible Moses never goes to land. Which is metaphorically speaking of Bruce being the hope and cleansing the sins away of corruption also himself of vengeance. Or riddler being afraid of rats in the orphanage but then conquers his fear by using it in the commissioner! This movie is something else not using the phenomenal acting, directing or cinematography. MASTERPIECE OF A MOVIE, best batman movie ( faithful to the comics)
Movies like The Batman, Joker and Logan are saving this genre. I'm tired and bored of the typical and generic superhero movies that we get every year, it feels so refreshing when we get something like this.

@@elfsieben1450 I didn't see anything Western about it. It was just another wolverine movie, except for the fact that Logan was old, smaller scale, and it had more violence.

Movies like The Dark Knight, The Batman or Logan show that the comics genre is not only commercial entertainment and if you put your mind to it you can create masterpieces with a more artistic tone.
My new favorite movie of all time. This was the perfect Batman movie we’ve all been waiting for. I can’t wait to see more of this universe. But not every character needs a movie with this tone or style. The Shazam movies and Black Adam seem to be perfect for those characters. As for the Snyderverse, I wouldn’t mind some sort of continuation but a lot of those fans only like Snyder DC and aren’t really fans of DC comics
I'd argue that we do need more detective noir comic book movies. If Question gets a movie it should be like this and Jessica Jones should've been since season 2. She's a private eye but we never really got to see it in her show. If they bring her back in the MCU I want detective stories like in ALIAS.
One thing that I think the DC Movies have over Marvel is they are not bounding themselves to one style and one format, like Marvel which can't argue their approach is successful, the numbers speak for themselves, but does have a kind of "sameness" to most of their movies. DC is not afraid to be more experimental, and have a different style and approach to each movie. It does mean some land better than others, but it also means they can create something truly special by not worrying about if the tone is as consistent as the last 10 movies before.
I mean I kinda agree but I think they've been getting MUCH better with that in Phase 4 tbh. Wandavision, Loki, Shang Chi, What If, Eternals and Moon Knight are not samey. Say what you want about their quality (especially Eternals lol) because quality is subjective. They are all OBJECTIVELY different styles tho and I feel like that was defo lacking in the Infinity Saga tbh.
For me, this new batman is the definitive canon. I understand that's not really how it works with comic book adaptations, but this is truly what batman should be. Really loving your series on The Batman. Its a goddamn masterpiece and easily the best cinematic take on the character ever. Yet your videos with their insight give me new angles from which to appreciate this movie. Keep them coming.
@@Olsenator I thought the white privilege line perfectly fit Catwoman's character. It would have worked without her mentioning skin colour but I can still excuse it. As for the mayor getting shot, I was more annoyed that they only got one successful shot when there's like 10 of them up there with sniper rifles and she's standing perfectly still. It does show paramedics dealing with her so I guess that's why she's a bit more mobile afterwards.
I greatly appreciated how the Batman used so many practical effects. It made the film look more believable and honestly made it look even better than it would if CGI was used.
Movies like The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Logan, and The Batman stand out in superhero movies because they're masterpieces. They don't rely on epic music, nostalgia or hype, a large fanbase or appearances/cameos from popular characters. They're just movies that give us all the things we need in a comic book movie: a great protagonist, a great antagonist, a protagonist/antagonist relationship, value of side characters, and a great story overall. I'm not saying other comic book movies don't do this. It's just that these movies do it better, that's why they stand out and that's we need more CBMs like them.
I've consistently heard from multiple sources that, when work begins on a superhero film, they begin by laying out the big battle scenes first because the CGI will take several months to process. That's why so many films in this genre feel disjointed, because the story is filled in later, molded around the big set pieces. No one seems to realize, when Matt Reeves went for no big battle scene with the villain and used CGI only sparingly, it made the story and acting the primary forces moving the film along and allowed a smoother, more organic progression.
That’s also how it’s often like with video games. Marc Laidlaw wrote the story for _Half-Life_ after the game was in development for many years. Erik Wolpaw rewrote the story and dialogue for _Half-Life: Alyx_ mere months before release. _Uncharted 3_ just had level designers going crazy with set pieces and Amy Hennig had to piece them all together with her story.
I really love how The Batman added more of the Noir-Driven Detective Elements, captured the look and feel of the Gotham and even lived up to the comics Batman is known as the World’s Greatest Detective as The Batman is a Superhero/Detective Movie. For the turtles, we need to make them not look like the Michael Bay Turtles, instead we make them look like the Mirage and IDW comic turtles with interesting features.
I like Marvel a lot. I like how consistent and coherent they can make their MCU movies. I love the spectacle they can create which are often unforgettable cinema experiences. But DC, to me, is the golden standard for what the comic book genre should be. DC is much more willing to experiment with their stories. Because of that, they produce bombs that are fun at best, but they also produce masterpieces that push the comic book genre to greater heights than their competitors. DC's characters are just so much more interesting and lend themselves better to more interesting stories. Batman and his rogues gallery alone are so much more interesting and unforgettable than other supehero-supervillain pairings. Marvel is consistently good. But DC is the one that achieves greater things. They don't always do it but when they do, the entire comic book genre is elevated.
@@ipman127 I don't personally agree with that list. Rises and Begins were just pretty good, nothing amazing. I love V but the movie is just okay. Watchmen is surprisingly great considering the fact that I hate everything Snyder touches with a burning passion, including his JL cut. Superhero stories need to be showed as a tale, as a story where you have a distinction between good and bad characters, examples, insignts on certain problems in the society. Where Marvel is showing the so called excellence and liking we know what of political entourage, DC is showing the grey part of the society, what is rotten, criticise heavily politics.
Love the video. You point out a lot of the issues I've had with Marvel movies. I would include Deadpool as a great successful comic book movie that was wholly unique and artistically driven.
At the very least, we know Matt Reeves will likely get his sequels now with the Batman receiving critical acclaim and pulling in over $700 million globally. I just hope Matt Reeves keeps the detective noir angle present throughout the trilogy. I understand the desire to do things on a larger scale now, but you can still do that while having Batman still using his detective skills.
I think this and hopefully multiverse of madness will usher in a new era of super hero movies where they actually let the director do interesting things with they’re movies instead of having it be bland film making and the same old shit
As much as I wholeheartedly agree with you on The Batman's consistently unique vision regarding the unity of its theme, how a tale about this theme is being told, and how this tale is being presented by making best use of the cinematic medium's strengths; there are still strong predecessors on whose shoulders it stands, and some of these I would like to point out: "Dick Tracy" first dared to brashly reference the melodramatic, larger-than-life comic book aesthetics, which made the villains appear more villainous, which made the heroes appear more heroic, which made the bits of realism within that fictional world, the set and setting, its sense of time and place more striking in contrast, the grimness more grim, the hilarity more hilarious, the melodrama more dramatic. "The Batman" does a similar thing, although much more subdued, by the way it uses colour grading to enhance visual contrasts and/or continuity, constant moods and/or mood swings/shifts, character themes/traits/perspectives, symbolic meaning, an over-the-top sense of scale, relevance, emotional and visceral impact. Another film that creates similar effects in portraying a city and its characters in how they relate to each other in a melodramatic way by using colour and shade is "Trouble in Mind" which might just as well have been set in and a portrayal of Gotham City. The film's heavy use of subjective camera shots, angles and focus has had a strong predecessor in movies by Alfred Hitchcock such as "Rear Window" and "Vertigo", also set within the crime/thriller genre. The clues left by a mentally disturbed serial killer who wants to impress a detective for recognition of his world view and impose that view on him, not only for the taste of power but also in order to prove a bigger point to the world at large and to justify his own deeds, and whereby he succeeds in manipulating his counterpart's actions and the way in which he views himself - that's something wherein "The Batman" owes something to "Se7en" not only in the way it picked its story and theme but also in plot structure and denouement. Depicting a well-known comic book character in a very melodramatic and symbolical yet also psychologically consistent, trauma-related and developmentally arrested manner, but still giving his main character an arc throughout a story that is both a reality-based character study reflecting seriously on possible origins and coping mechanisms in dealing with violent mental trauma AND an iconic representation of that comic book character within the lore of its source material - that's something "Joker" exhibited first as being possible both on an artistically and on a commercially successfull level. So, while "The Batman" is strongly rooted in Western cinema tradition, it manages to re-formulate ideas taken from previous Hollywood culture movies to create a visual style and ficticious world with a fresh appeal by means of a unique re-combination of styles hitherto unseen.
Thank you for this amazing review, i i enjoyed it thoroughly. I must add Aquaman was amazing, so beautiful and it also got past a billion in revenue too, deservingly. Shazam was also good. But Aquaman was simply amazing. And The Batman is a masterpiece.
Batman Villians That Should Be In Upcoming Sequels 1. Hugo Strange 2. Mr Freeze 3. Joker 4. Court Of Owls 5. Clayface 6. Man-Bat 7. Killer Croc 8. Bane 9. Poison Ivy 10. Firefly
This is such an underrated film. The whole singular idea, by Matt Reeves, that this is a man who is unhinged and unhealthily obsessed with fighting the criminal element at night who is constantly beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands and with his unlimited amount of vast resources at his disposal. All he sees in the criminal element, in this corrupt town that his family helped to build and found dating back to the late 1800s, are the people who killed his parents as a young child making him an orphan. So, he dons the mantle of that which he fears the most, in the form of the Batman, after training for the majority of his life to rid his city of the evil that took his parent's lives. He dosen't know who was responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne so every criminal he sees, to him, is the criminal that killed his parents on that fateful night when he was only 10 years old. He is addicted to this mission, like a drug, so as both Bruce and Batman, he spends all of his time, trying to succeed in this impossible task he has set up for himself. That's why he never sees the light of day as Billionaire Bruce Wayne and is a social outcast and pariah. He is a man driven by vengeance; by revenge. By the end of this journey, as we see Bruce on a physical, mental, emotional and psychological level and transform from a young, naive, impatient man who makes mistakes still early in his career as a crime fighter we see him then become something else by the end...a symbol of hope, an ideal, a form of inspiration that makes criminals terrified to step out at night and commit their atrocities that makes Gotham City one of the worst places to call home. A city with a history and a foundation steeped in corruption and crime that ties back to the Wayne family and and their vast fortune. It also plants the seeds that will give him the inspiration to step out in the light of day to transform into the billionaire, playboy industrialist more interested in dating models and driving fast cars in order to hide in plain sight so no one would be able to distinguish Bruce Wayme is actually the Batman. A man consumed by vengeance who transforms into a symbol of hope. Obviously a film inspired by the comic book mythos and Arkham video game series and Batman animated series from the 1990s. Ironically, a film consisting of character arc transformations and worldbuilding moments that is actually one of the most faithful Batman comic book movies to the original source material in the 1940s. Such as Detective comics issue 27 from 1937 and batman issue 1 in 1940 created by Bob kane, Bill finger and Jerry Robinson. Then, the new 52 comics such as court of owls and Zero year by tomeu morey, john ottley, Jim lee, Scott Snyder. Batman year one by jim lee, David Mazuchelli and Frank miller as well as Batman: the long halloween and Batman: ego and other tales. This essay is lterally just scratching the surface of why it's actually one of the best batman films yet up their with the likes of the Dark knight from 2008.
The Batman is a true film, so many times during it I forgot it was a watching a "Super Hero movie" I like the direction in the Joker and the fact that The Batman was well received being in that same space gives me hope for a shift in the genre.
Great video. Could you do a video about the MCU I’d love to hear your opinion on the MCU. For me love the mcu but will admit most of the films are the same despite being very good and fun. I’m also aware there’s much more interesting films out there. I admit I want to see more comic book films like the batman, Logan, dark knight and Spider-Man 2
The movie was good. But it did t blow me away. It was decent on the first watch, but the second time it was a little on the boring side. I. Glad people love it. I hope the sequel is better.
200 mil$ budget includes marketing budget which is almost 80mil$. This is the case for most blockbuster movies, where marketing budget is around 60-70mil. Sometimes close to 90 or 100mils
Make a video of why we need the Reevesverse to transform into the New DCEU instead of the clusterf#&k of a universe that is the current DCEU. DC movies need a clean slate.
Fr, especially after this whole Ezra Miller situation (aka the guy they were counting on to soft-reboot the DCEU), I think that they should genuinely consider dropping it. Like I'm not even saying that maliciously or anything, I really just think it's gone so entirely wrong that trying to salvage it is a waste of time. They should either move forward with a universe built off of what Reeves did here or focus on standalone films while making sure to leave the door open for them to connect in the near future.
I beg to differ, for I say: Leave the extended universe shtick to the Marvel bunch. Let authors/directors run completely scot-free and wild each time with re-envisioned unique world-building exclusively based on and modelled entirely to suit their respective re-interpretation of any given DC character. Variety/Variation is the true stronghold of the DC franchise.
@@elfsieben1450 That's true. I'd say do exactly what you described, but with one caveat: the "unique world building" and reinterpretations need to be suited to the characters that these creatives are adapting. The reason The Batman works so well is that while its Matt Reeves's singular vision through and through, its also very appropriate for Batman and completely in line with who the character is at his core. Creative liberties are a good thing for sure, but they definitely need to be careful when choosing directors for these projects if they decide to go down the more artistan-based route. These movies still need to be true to the characters at the end of the day and that's the big reason why The Batman has been so well recieved.

They were fine, better than Whedon Justice League & Ayer’s Suicide Squad, not amazing. The real movie that was overhyped was Joker, held together by a genuinely amazing lead performance but my God what an awful script and amateur direction
No, we do not, this movie is badly paced, written, overlong runtime, makes little sense, has no focus on villains or plot/subplots and its badly edited. On the surface it seems like a grounded well made movie, cinematography is good, visuals are good, but its all superficial, the script is atrocious, the message is rly bad and cringe, and the movie is just poorly made when it comes to story telling.

The scene where the officers sneak upon Riddler reminded of his Blade Runner 2049. To be honest the whole film felt like it could've been shot by him.
I love this batman 😍
Superhero stories need to be showed as a tale, as a story where you have a distinction between good and bad characters, examples, insignts on certain problems in the society. Where Marvel is showing the so called excellence and liking we know what of political entourage, DC is showing the grey part of the society, what is rotten, criticise heavily politics.
Love the video. You point out a lot of the issues I've had with Marvel movies. I would include Deadpool as a great successful comic book movie that was wholly unique and artistically driven.
That's a good point. I love the first deadpool and really enjoyed the second.
And yet it was outplayed at its own game by "Birds of Prey; or: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn".
@@elfsieben1450 Outplayed in what way?
I think it's time for a new superman movie made with as much care as the batman was
At the very least, we know Matt Reeves will likely get his sequels now with the Batman receiving critical acclaim and pulling in over $700 million globally.
As much as I wholeheartedly agree with you on The Batman's consistently unique vision regarding the unity of its theme, how a tale about this theme is being told, and how this tale is being presented by making best use of the cinematic medium's strengths;
there are still strong predecessors on whose shoulders it stands, and some of these I would like to point out:
"Dick Tracy" first dared to brashly reference the melodramatic, larger-than-life comic book aesthetics, which made the villains appear more villainous, which made the heroes appear more heroic, which made the bits of realism within that fictional world, the set and setting, its sense of time and place more striking in contrast, the grimness more grim, the hilarity more hilarious, the melodrama more dramatic.
First! And EXCELLENT video👍...
Thanks again!
what if we got a spider man noir movie?
Is that Spiderman

The dark knight, the Batman, joker, Logan, spider man 2 and captain America: the winter soldier are by far my favorite comic book movies
Matt Reeves Daredevil😩
This essay is lterally just scratching the surface of why it's actually one of the best batman films yet up their with the likes of the Dark knight from 2008.
these six episode marvel shows need to be like this movie. so drawn out.
Marvel shows need to be more like Daredevil.
The Batman is a true film, so many times during it I forgot it was a watching a "Super Hero movie" I like the direction in the Joker and the fact that The Batman was well received being in that same space gives me hope for a shift in the genre.
The Batman is a Love Poem to Batman fans . No more no less. If u found it boring. U just don’t get it.
Right the pattyman was a great comedy movie

I already got a lot of Great Batman Movie, but i need more Animated Cinematic movies of Batman
I love it because it shows the realistic side of tge DC universe, no supernatural events/villains, just pure greed, lust, and evil organized crime
The Batman is one of the most intentional films I've ever seen.
The image you used for the cover photo of this video is amazing. Is that a poster?? I really need that to be a poster
It’s a magazine cover
Absolutely agree with everything you said. Everything
I liked the Batman but my expectations were too high, something felt off idk
We need movies that yearn to be a great movie first, and a good comic book movie second.
Said it well! Thanks!
Nwh needed old villains and Spider-Man to make toms Spider-Man relevant
Great video. Could you do a video about the MCU I’d love to hear your opinion on the MCU. For me love the mcu but will admit most of the films are the same despite being very good and fun. I’m also aware there’s much more interesting films out there. I admit I want to see more comic book films like the batman, Logan, dark knight and Spider-Man 2
I didn't see the video, but how I read the taitle Why We Need More Comic Book Movies Like It I have to disagree. We just Need More Movies Like It.
Great movie!!!! 🦇
Batman has 100% life
When I say that, people tell me I'm an idiot. So can you work on those people, so we can have nice things?
The movie was good. But it did t blow me away. It was decent on the first watch, but the second time it was a little on the boring side. I. Glad people love it. I hope the sequel is better.
The batman 2/10 not even one sky-beam..lol j/k this movie was freaking awesome. We basically got 2 batman movies.
Hi bro.
Hi brother 😎
I agree with you ...but would add man of steel ...X peace n love
200 mil$ budget includes marketing budget which is almost 80mil$. This is the case for most blockbuster movies, where marketing budget is around 60-70mil. Sometimes close to 90 or 100mils
Make a video of why we need the Reevesverse to transform into the New DCEU instead of the clusterf#&k of a universe that is the current DCEU. DC movies need a clean slate.
Henry Cavill needs a soft reboot with better filmmaker and writer
@@DerrickVanderspoon Agree.
I think this is how DC can be better than marvel.
No, we don’t need more boring movies with a “dark” take on a superhero. Been there done that

We don’t need anymore superhero/comic book content tbh. Think we’re good for like a decade.
Oh, but why? I never heared from people the same about rom-coms, psychological thrillers, period pieces and detective stories. Yet somehow superheroes are played out?!
@@jakubrejak1114 yes superheroes r beyond played out. Those other sub genres r so versatile they can’t overstay their welcome. No studio is trying to push rom coms like marvel movies lol come on.
@@popdanish4969 The studios aren't pushing romcoms because they are the ones that are fucking PLAYED OUT! There's no more ways to truly redefine or revitalize the genre, to pull it out of apathy. Superhero movies have at least a thousands ways to do so. You know why? Because romcoms have been made for at least 7 decades, and superheroes - 4. The frequency is still higher for the romcoms. There's been like 10000 of them. When we've had one thousand superhero movies, then you go back here and continue the discussion. But for now.... Hasta la vista, baby!
@@jakubrejak1114 well studios aren’t pushing anything but comic book content. It’s not because all the other genres r garbage, it’s just the zeitgeist, which is old and stale and aside from a couple movies in the last 5 years, bland. Superhero movies have been increasing in popularity for 20 years, been all studios care about for 10. It’s bad for the industry and the artform. U nerds have had your fill. I’ll take all the other movie genres over superhero movies all day. No question.

I like how it wasn’t pushing a gay agenda just tell a story. Nothing against lifestyle but movies do not need to force characters in your face.
YEAH, I'm soo glad the story did'nt give any gay propaganda and just focus on detective aspect
The Riddler *did* spend the entire movie sending valentine cards to the Batman, or did you somehow miss that lol. Works great for the movie though, and in line with Riddler's comic personality.
@@fakescorpion112the riddler sent those letter just being a fan of batman, not something that out of lust or love interest
@@anivlave There are literal comic storylines calling Gotham City the modern day Sodom, and you want to keep up the denial? How about that time in the comic where Riddler lure out Bat specifically on Valentine’s Day, while he set up a table for two with flowers and champagne on a rooftop. Do you tell yourself the Joker’s interest in Batman is purely platonic too lol
