    He's right about light weight and more reps. I wasn't blessed with genetics to have naturally big calves, but I train them every time I go into the gym. I usually do 4 sets of 20-25 reps on seated calf and 7 sets of 15 reps on standing calves. Trust me, you'll see results in a month. It might not be much, but hey it's progress. And yes, your calves will get bigger and more defined. Calves can be trained every day.

      Thanks for sharing this. What sort of rest periods are you taking in between sets? And how long would you say it takes to do the 11 sets in total?

      I have genetically smaller calves to but heavier weight helped me. I grew them a LOT. I didn't go crazy high weight and low reps but generally 10-16 reps with moderately heavy. I got up to seated calf raises with 4-5 plates or standing calf raises at 460-500lb comfortably. The key is that you need to do calves MULTIPLE times a week though like you said. You can train them nearly everyday. Most people don't do it more than once a week.

    • @magos_0083

      Yes this! I’ll do 4 sets of 24 reps. Moderate to light weight sometimes I’ll do pauses or I’ll pulsate the reps for more intensity. Gotta get that stretch tho!

    I've noticed the same thing... Korean and some. Japanese have insane calf and leg development compared to other Asians. My calves grow just by looking at them... but I have Scottish heritage and I'm only 5'7... maybe it's because I was a fan of Tom platz and tried his insanity approach to legs. The difference between seated and standing is that seated prevents the gastrocnemius from working as much as it crosses the knee joint.. the soleus from what I remember is lower and doesn't cross the knee joint so that is mainly what you hit doing seated. I couldn't really build forearms and the big capped shoulders, got wide but not the coconuts... that said chest back legs and bicep/triceps all grew real well... perhaps I relied on wrist straps too much for heavy back stuff and they dwarfed my slower forearms and shoulders.... loved leg press for my calves... I'd do them a few reps with my leg pressing and it did the trick, I never really had to do much else

    • @jakefromstatefarm5204
      @jakefromstatefarm5204 Рік тому +2

      The soleus attaches at the knee joint also. Gastrocnemius lays on top. IV always heard the seated calf raises for soleus too but I get more soreness up high behind the knee than standing for some reason. 🤷✌️

    • @Zokambaa
      @Zokambaa Рік тому +3

      @@jakefromstatefarm5204 not quite, the soleus doesn't attach to the femur , the origin is the Soleal line, medial border of tibia, head of fibula, posterior border of fibula
      The Insertion is the Posterior surface of calcaneus (via calcaneal tendon) so while it is in the knee area it doesn't attach to the femur so really only flexes the ankle not the ankle and knee like the Gastrocs do. When I did seated I only ever felt it super low on my lower leg but standing I felt it everywhere from the knee down...
      I suppose it depends on the length of your levers and the angle they are at when you use the muscles as to where you feel it.

    • @wombat5252
      @wombat5252 Рік тому +1

      Just sounds like you're not training them enough or eating enough. Calves are extremely resilient so you're going to need to fully train them 3-4 times week, maybe even more. You can't keep the weight to low otherwise your calves have no reason to grow. Gotta keep increasing the weight. Higher reps does help for calves to like Lee stated. It's how I grew mine and I have genetically small calves. I had to punish them 4 times a week and kept increasing the weight and now they look pretty damn muscular. I won't be able to look like Lee, but my calves are finally up there. Big enough where people notice and actually ask me about my calves lol

  • @neophyte2688
    @neophyte2688 Рік тому +1

    My two cents for the NATURAL lifter. Your calves are raising your body weight all day, if you have stairs at work or home you have to use regulary they work even more. So, unless you are doing calves raises with at least your body weight your calves have no reason to grow and the won't grow. Now you need to think carefully the risk/reward of that axial load up and down on your spine. And let's not forget genetics, if you have small bones, high insertions, small muscle bellies, and so on, it is almost impossible to do a noticeable difference naturally. This light weight Lee is doing here only works to mantain some of what he built with tons of gear and other weight. If you are a natural lifter and want more vascularity in your calves go ahead and do what he is showing, but if you want bigger calves, your only chance is progressively load that thing up with 1.5 your body weight, and do a prayer for your spine and Achilles tendom each night.

  • @benoneill5550
    @benoneill5550 Рік тому +3

    Lee is one of those guys that would never need calf training. Being 5’5 with godly genetics is your calf training. For the rest of us, the only thing that is going to force growth is the breakdown of the calf muscles through high volume and high frequency training. So often you see morons in the comments saying “just go heavy” or something equally as idiotic. I see people calf raising hundreds of kg’s, but their calves are trash and barely pumped in the right place. Why is that? It’s because at some point when you increase the weight you are no longer getting the most optimal contraction of the desired muscle. Seated calf raise you can go a lot heavier on because it relies less on ankle strength and mobility than standing calf raises.
    Standing raises it is most optimal to train light enough where you fail around the 25+ mark. And do drop sets. Triple drop sets.
    Sample calf training:
    3x30 standing calf raises (machine), or calf extensions on a leg press machine. DROP SETS
    3x15-20 seated calf raise drop sets
    5x20-30 tibialis raises (you can do this through your heels on a straight leg press machine or do reverse calf raises on a machine/smith machine which target tibialis also (muscle that runs across the front sides of your calves)
    Doing this + alternate exercises like an incline walk on the treadmill to fully deplete the calves, is the most optimal way of training calves. No debate.

      dont call them idiots ,it depends on the individual,i have shit calf genetics and been doing high reps for 6 years with no progress,all kind of exercices and controlled,i said fuck it and went heavy low reps,and they finally responded,so if u calves are used to high reps that probably wont do much unless u train them like every other body part,HEAVY anyways the point is you gotta try different styles and never be close minded to test

      Eh. To each their own. I'm all natural, have genetically small calves but I ended up growing them to become pretty damn huge and muscular. To the point people ask me about my calves. I had to work them 3-4 times a week and I went moderately heavy. For me what worked was moderately heavy and anywhere from 10-20 reps. Got up to doing sets of 5 plates on the seated calf and 460-500lb reps on the standing calf machines. 4-6 sets worked best for me.
