Exactly. Lee would always say, "Don't lift that way. You're lifting like an amateur". I used to laugh, but I knew Lee had done his homework on doing things the right way.
My childhood hero and still is! One comment tho; you DO grow from the negatives - gymnasts are the perfect example of it. They don't lift (curl, etc.) like a bodybuilder, and look at their biceps..
Yep, slowing negatives actually help prevent injury along with building muscle. When you slow negatives it becomes harder to use the same weight. So you are forced to use a bit lesser weight to get close to failure for same reps.
Gymnasts imo are a bad example. People forget gymnasts are actually tiny compared to how strong they are. They do freaking maltese. They generate like triple the force a top natural bodybuilder can. Don’t get me wrong many look great. But the level of intensity in their training and strength are both so high that their training is SUPER inefficient for big biceps. I used to disagree with some of his methods ie. Not doing negatives. Once i learned about Fred Hatfield and CAT or dynamic effort method its balistic and explosive. Its about the speed of the lift. So youre stimulating your fast twitch without taxing your joints. Its a controlled negative but not super slow and the weight has to be moderate in order to have the rep speed be fast. Its actually a genius method that works great for powerlifters but he used it for bodybuilding.
Some of us use the gym as a "mental exfoliation", which is why we work out 2 hours per session. It's actually very HEALTHY to do that. You build endurance, mental fortitude, and some of us are genetically built for it. I personally know the EXACT time my body has had enough because it lets me know. Any "quitting" before that makes me feel like I've cheated myself and gotten lazy. I'm gifted with natural cut and lean muscle, so there's no need for cardio, especially with my physical day job. Why would an elite Olympic amateur and professional boxing, multi-weight world champion like Evander Holyfield - and renowned for a scientific approach to training while being surrounded by the pick of sports scientists and nutritionists, as well as legendary boxing trainers like Lou Duva and Emanuel Steward - suddenly need to consult a non-expert in sports science and sports nutrition outside of pro bodybuilding like ex-pro bodybuilding legend Lee Haney (who was never 'built' naturally anyway)? In this interview, Haney even admits that he had to consult with a sports science expert for that aspect of Holyfield's programme. Holyfield had already been known and documented for including a qualified team of advanced strength, conditioning and nutrition experts in his camp alongside his trainers, on his rise to bulk up his natural light-heavy/cruiserweight physique to the heavyweight crown. Obviously, the pot of gold waiting for him if he could rapidly build up his size to fight the dominant, ferocious, talented, undisputed HW champion, Mike Tyson, was huge but prime Tyson weighed 210-215 lb). When he fought Douglas (246 lb) for the title instead he was still just about 205 Ib and again at massive disadvantages against eg., Foreman and a 235 lb Bowe. Holyfield and co. probably decided that they had gone as far as they could naturally go at this stage against opposition that was almost always bigger than him. Allegedly gaining 20-22lb of added muscle in just 5 weeks (according to Haney) and bulking up that much for the second Bowe fight in '93 was always suspect, including Steward suddenly leaving Holyfield's employ after winning that rematch. There was talk of problems in the camp but not why suddenly. Evander was eventually suspected of using HGH, steroids and flushing agents during this period: this would have needed 'specialized' help to administer these treatments effectively and then cycle and flush his system in time and thoroughly enough to pass the drug-testing routines. Without naming any names, elite pro bodybuilders would expertly know that administer and flush routine. During the Balco Labs scandal and cross-sport investigations, a lab called Signature Labs plus an associated lab called Applied Pharma in Alabama were also raided. Amongst the documents and evidence found was a patient under the name of “Evan Fields” with the same date of birth, telephone number and similar address as Evander. This was coincidental as they were not investigating Holyfield but it raised suspicion among investigators and when reporters called the phone number associated with those prescriptions, Holyfield himself answered. According to SI.com (Sports Illustrated), Holyfield was believed by investigators to be using the pseudonym “Evan Fields”, and allegedly picked up drugs from a private Georgia urologist whose offices were also raided. The report stated that authorities traced the drugs to Applied Pharma in Mobile, Ala., and in June 2004, an individual believed by investigators to be Holyfield picked up three vials of testosterone, two vials of the drug Glukor, and injection supplies. One of the drugs was for hypogonadism. Then, less than a week later, he received five vials of human growth hormone (HGH) and related supplies. Asked about his alleged involvement, Holyfield issued a statement through his promoter that said: “I do not use steroids.” However, Holyfield was questioned about possible HGH use in 1994 when he suffered a mysterious heart condition after strangely lethargic performances and the loss of his title to Michael Moorer. He also performed poorly, if not losing, to average opposition like John Ruiz, Larry Donald and ex-middle and light heavyweight, Bobby Czyz as he aged, between looking jacked and giving almost superhuman performances against incomparably tougher opposition in e.g., the Moorer II, Bowe III and Tyson I & II fights. Dr Goodman (chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission's medical advisory board) stated that whenever a boxer has a heart problem they are questioned about steroid or HGH use. Holyfield simply denied it and the commission accepted that there was no accepted test at the time to detect the use of HGH. It was later proven that Holyfield's sister collected these HGH, steroids etc private prescriptions for the 'Mr Fields' pseudonym., and Holyfield belated claimed that they were for his father, but only after his father had passed away. Holyfield and Haney are both legends in their respective fields but were all of these HGH and steroid allegations, stunning muscle mass increase, temporary heart problems and fluctuating performances, and pro-bodybuilder input, customer details, addresses and phone numbers - and commission reports; all just coincidental?
13:56 The recent science actually says that the negative is the most important part of a movement and where most growth comes from. You SHOULD lift slower. It is actually better for growth AND joint health.

Trying to lift the world was a mouthful. These new bodybuilder try to lift the most possible. Old school didnt do that. They was more reps orientated
