Some of you may ask if this is a reupload of my older "Obi-Wan Kenobi... Why It's Great" video (I got similar questions about my siege of mandalore video). No it is not. However, when rewriting this video I found myself not having changed my mind about much since I made the previous video. So I did reuse a lot of points that I made. I find it unnecessary to reword my arguments that I felt were already strong a year ago. So if certain praises or criticisms sound familiar, that is probably why. But for those of you who find this video too similar to my original one, I did add a 22 minute rewrite section so that's something new you can enjoy. Thank you! #UniteTheKlaudSquad
Lmao I was actually looking for that specific video ("why its great") since I couldn't find a ton of positive criticism for the show and I wanted to see another perspective on the whole thing. If they aren't the same, then why did you take the older one down? Is it still avaliable somewhere?
If you watched the clone wars and were into the skywalker Kanobi relationship then the talk at the end of the fight was emotional. Also Kathleen Kennedy sucks.
Solid rewrite but I think you misunderstood that it was never the story's goal to make US believe obi wan was at fault, its what he personally believed and you changing that also takes away from a new hope given that he Still see Vader as his student he failed, the only other people that blame obi wan are Owen (because that's probably what Obi wan told him) and Anakin because he was manipulated into holding on to his hate and the mistakes obi wan made, other than that solid rewrite
In the rewrite, imagine if Reva and the other younglings mentioned, how they wanted to be great jedi like Anakin specifically. Just imagine the emotional toll of having someone you aspire to be like be the one who's destroyed everything you hold dear.
Yes! If they hadn't been OBSESSED with "mystery boxing" Reva, if they'd instead leaned into her story and why she was so angry from the get go - it could've been so good!
@BK Beatty Not at all. She was clearly part of the story all along. But studios are obsessed with "mystery boxes" to artificially stretch the amount of episodes, instead of making the amount of eps the story requires.
@BK Beatty Yeah, any of those ideas would've been better. The first two eps were great, then they just dragged it out. I can see why people say it should've been a film. BTW, I see this "dragging out" issue on so many dramas too. Scifi fans are so over the mystery box, the advertising for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was that the eps are stand alones. Lol.
@@etherealtb6021why not just give Reva her own show then? Advertise it as a show about the inquisitors as well. If a show is about Obi Wan Kenobi shouldn’t it follow his story?
I have mixed feelings on this one. I have a soft spot for it and love how it bridged the PT and OT together, and how it felt like an essential step in the story of Obi-Wan and even Vader. But the Reva character really frustrated me, a lot of characters made cartoonishly stupid decisions, plus the production value looked surprisingly low. Still would take this show any day over The Book of Boba Fett and the surprisingly underwhelming Mando S3
The show literally just completely ruins the impact of revenge of the sith and contradicts a new hope. Horribly written and executed, it completely rips off other material like rebels and the fallen order games in particular
im sorry but the only good things about this show is having hayden and ewan back, prequel flashbacks and that fantastic finale battle. i hate how it focused so much on reva and obi wan dealing with a fetch quest... almost felt like watching the main character do side quests lmao
While watching the last episode, I remember watching Vader’s last scene, and it felt slightly off to me so I started thinking what it was. I realized it was a very simple thing - Vader sitting when talking to the Emperor. I haven’t read all of the books and comics, but in the movies we have always seen Vader kneel in front of Palpatine. So here, I feel like this simple change would be perfect thematically. In that scene we are in Vaders Mustafar Castle, a place where he complete dominion, and control over the Inquisitors but when The Emperor calls, he has to get up from his throne and kneel next to it. His power here is an illusion, he has no authority, he only serves Palpatine…
@@Tiran654LP In some comics of the old EU, it almost seemed that Palpatine was also human: in one story, he addressed a future imperial guard during his training, and addressed him with almost paternal words, which honestly surprised me, given that in the films he is always shown as devious, treacherous and evil to the core, without any "positive" connotation, or at least empathetic on the part of the public.
most of the 1st episode was pretty good with obi wan being depressed, isolated quietly working away in a butchers or something and the scene with the clone beggar was nice (it really should have been a 212th legion clone since that's the company he led), when vader kept killing villagers and the scene where vader yanks the ship out of the sky and tears it apart was great and really felt like him.
Honestly, Vader killing the villagers was so out of character. He's a bad dude, but he was never a purveyor of senseless violence for it's own sake. He'd choke people to intimidate everyone else in the room. Or kill incompetent commanders to make sure someone else does the job better. It was almost always calculated, and when it wasn't, his violence came as a result of temper, but that requires the victim to piss him off first. It made him dangerous because you knew that he is in control of his actions, and utterly ruthless in his pursuit of the Rebelion. Here, he just kills random innocents, because..... reasons?? And it honestly degrades his character, making him just another bad guy who just kills people because he's bad and evil and no good and very bad.
@@captainuseless2120 to be fair he had a raging hard on for kenobi and knew he was on the planet so killing innocent people would be very effective at bringing him out
I love how you make these types of videos, I think when things come out so many different factors that affect our opinions on things when they come out, crowd reaction, backlash, bias, and expectations. Making videos about these things a year or a few years after lets you clear your mind and watch them without as much expectation and lets you really analyze them and go into them.
We were absolutely robbed of the chance of seeing Carrie & Vivian together at conventions. You just know Carrie would've treated Vivian like her own. A wholesome relationship we'll sadly never get to see 😭
Tbh I didn't like Vivian that much in the show, nothing against her and I do think she did a good job, but I wish part of the series wasn't focused on her.
What you said about anakin and Vader actually feeling like the same person would make more sense if the show wasn't set 10 years later. I feel like it's been so long that he'd be more Vader like, but maybe not
I really don't like that it's 10 years later. It was always hard to believe that Obi-wan aged as badly as he did in 20 years but the aging is even harder to believe now. Doesn't help that Ewan barely aged in nearly 20 years.
I am not sure if you are someone who also reads novels, but I personally love how Vader's internal character is portrayed in Timothy Zahns "Thrawn: Alliances". It shows him cruel, cold, calculating but when he comes in contact with people that "The Jedi" had strong emotional connections to, it boils up and over, and makes him act more irrational, emotional and hateful. I think this is a really cool twist on the classic "demon within", because here the demon is actually the supressed good guy, embedded in the darkness of vader.
i feel like it somewhat makes sense because of how little Anakin/Vader would have to address his feelings about Obi-Wan it makes sense that someone who was his master and basically his brother who he sees as a traitor and the person who made him wear the vader suit would kinda revert to his older state rather than the cooler, more in control vader you don't just get almost murdered by your brother and lose your wife and not have any remaining trauma years later- especially if you never have to face it
I actually think Vader did have a character arc and just like Obi Wan he couldn't let go of Anakin because of his hatred of Obi Wan but losing a second time or perhaps Obi Wan apologizing allowed him to let go of that last shred of Anakin
What should’ve been an introspection into the life of a broken yet hopeful man charged with the task of protecting the son of his best friend from said friend who he believes he killed, turned into a clusterfuck of fan service and terribly choreographed fights
The writers have said they have ideas for a 2nd and even 3rd season. The plans wouldn't involve Vader, but I don't remember if they said they would stay on Tatooine. They want to explore why Obi-Wan was so ready to sacrifice himself on the Death Star. Looking back, it's weird how quickly Obi-Wan accepted his death. I didn't originally want a season 2, but I think this idea would be great to explore.
i think the reason he accepted his death is because a second before he sees luke and leia together, so he knows he completed his mission in life which was to protect those kids, or at least luke
@@MrWord283and he knew that there wasn’t any way he could escape from or defeat Vader. Letting go and joining with the Cosmic Force was also the completion of his training.
So what they should have done in season 1 I swear this is the most infuriating show they made An obi wan kenobi show us great but it needs ru be about kenobi and given the situation needs to be isolating and somewhat depressing as he reflected on his time as a Jedi and the horrors he couldn’t stop Not the reva and liea show starring Vader and this guy who resembles kenobi
@20:20 Obi-Wan being in the bottom of a pit barely keeping the rocks above him from crushing him was symbolic. The more he dwelt on his failures the more the rocks (aka guilt, shame, regret) weighed down on him, keeping him in the pit that his apprentice had put him. Only by letting go of his guilt was Obi-Wan able to push away the things that were weighing him down. When he jumped out of that pit, that was the moment when Obi-Wan was himself again.
Absolutely love this video, actually good and reasonable critiques while still giving praise where its deserved. This show is over hated, and this was an awesome video breaking down the series, can’t wait to see watch more of your content.
Its not „over hated“ its the worst piece of media in all of star wars because it assassinates many beloved characters and breaks canon about a million times
@@mythic_Tisiphone lmfao cry more you fuckin pussy it’s television not real life you can chose to ignore it and act like it doesn’t exist you fucking clown 💀
There’s a ton of character potential already in Obi-Wan learning of the Lars family (skipped out on in Ep3, he just shows up and drops off a baby without saying a word), not to mention adapting to life on Tatooine - especially facing the Tusken Raiders, who mistake him for the rumored sorcerer who murdered an entire tribe years prior, so Obi-Wan has to reckon witb Anakin’s actions. It would explain how Obi-Wan knows how to scare Tuskens away from Luke, too. Also, re: budget; this show had a rumored $25 million PER EPISODE.
Love your takes with star wars! I agree with a majority of your points and it is a welcome departure from the popular opnions. Excited to dive into this one!
Well, it is definitely refreshing to hear someone actually praise this series. Personally, I can't stand it, but I really enjoy that you acknowledge the glaring missteps, and I feel happy for you that you can enjoy the series for what it is. For me, eventhough I like the way they handled Obi-Wans and Vaders main arcs, there is just such a vast amount of inconsistencies to how they and others are portrayed in existing media, that I sometimes actually laughed out while watching a serious scene. In my head, and supported by his march into town - my favorite scene from the series, Vader in episode 3 is pure hatred. It is like you were in pain for weeks or months, and finally you found the cause. I loved how he just kills random people in the street, thinking that it would bring the Jedi Obi-Wan out of hiding to protect the common folk, and that it likely would have worked if Obi-Wan himself wasnt that deep down in his depression. I like how he absolutely mauls Obi-Wan every chance he gets, although the shot composition in their duel scenes is awful, and Vader jump scares, with him walking on metal feet and breathing loud af just feel out of place. But what you pointed out as a minor break of character for me felt like a slap in the face. We see Vader maul and mutilate Obi-Wan for like half an hour, dragging him through fire he himself lit. But when someone else lights that same fire, he just stands there and watches the source of all his pain, anger and suffering walk away. In that moment I was honestly waiting for a "waking up from meditation" sequence, because I could not believe that anyone would shoot something like this. Even worse tho, is how they handled the finale of the final fight. I didnt mind the new earth-bendy force powers as much as others. They felt a little out of place, but it didn't ruin the scene for me. I thought the lighting and cinematography was atrocious, but thats not what I want to discuss. Why on earth would Obi-Wan leave Darth Vader alive after besting him in combat? I loved the dialogue in the scene and it made me emotional seeing ewan react to Obiwan freeing himself from most of the guilt that had plagued him. But in that moment, Obi-Wan should not be conflicted about killing Darth Vader. This obiwan should be close to the same obi-wan that said "I will do what I must", even when that same Darth Vader still looked and acted like his friend, apprentice and brother. Why, god why couldnt they write a scene where Obi-Wan after learning that Anakin is forever lost tries to finish off vader, but is stopped by force of nature, by vader and his dark side powers in the end, or by the rest of the imperial forces, who wouldnt just watch their leader get killed... Like this, Obi-Wan frees himself of the guilt of having caused Anakins transition into darth vader, but he takes on the guilt of not having stopped the uncountable dark deeds that vader would do after that moment. It feels so out of place, and in such a pivotal moment in the series, that I for one can't bring myself to rewatch it. However, I would love to hear other's personal head canon as to why Obi-Wan did what he did. Maybe it helps me come to terms with how it is, maybe it reaffirms my beliefs. But I would love to talk with anyone about it here :)
This is what I said immediately after the scene ended. How could he possibly leave him alive a second time? The first time was excusable because most people in that situation would expect someone in Anakin's condition to die from their injuries, but doing it a second time was ridiculous. With that one decision, the writers have basically put Obi-Wan at fault for everything Vader did after this point.
Tbh, i hated this show. It had so much wasted potential, so many bad dialoge, dumb decisions, wasted themes, character assasinations and plotholes. I can not watch any show from them (excluding Andor) without thinking of their CGI room and how much they use it for. It is just sad that the show everybody was waiting for got such a low budget. I want star wars to be so much better and more, but they start to look like parodys of themselfes.
@@thegoldman25 everybody to their own. For dumb movie fun it is quite enjoyable. But it is hard to find a good reason for it to exist. And if you start to watch movies or media with the mindset of themes or some sort of "the logic they set and break in the same episode" it opens your eyes that some writers really dont deserve the money they get.
Yo. Leia is the product of Obi-Wan’s actions in Ep 3. Hope. Rebellion. Reva is the product of Vader’s. Rage. Revenge. Kenobi redeems Reva and inspires Leia. I love that parallel.
Really love these videos. Been sick all day and I've been binging them. I love how you actually do find genuine positives about each thing you analyse, even if as a whole the film/show isn't great, it's really refreshing to see over entirely negative or positive reviews and feels like a non biased look at these things. It's a really fantastic review style, keep it up!
Honestly, a lot of my frustrations with this show come down to story choices that contradict a lot of what we know in Star Wars lore. For example: -Obi-Wan and Vader meeting even though A New Hope established their battle on the Death Star was the first time they had seen each other. -Leia and Obi-Wan meeting despite the fact that A New Hope implies they’ve never met. -Obi-Wan being rusty in his force powers despite part of the reason him being on Tatooine is so he can further his training in the Force.
I really liked this show when it came out but with hindsight I feel like it was a bit of a missed opportunity. Now if you love this show don’t think i’m trying to invalidate those feelings. I just personally feel like the dhow could have explored Obi Wan’s trauma more and been more introspective than just another jedi adventure. I also feel like this should have been a movie instead of a tv show cause imo it feels like the story could have served a purpose as a two hour film than 6 episodes.
I was really confused as to why you were talking about the Obi-Wan show in a Force Awakens video... and then I realized UA-cam had auto-played to the next video! XD
While your rewrite doesn’t make this series amazing, it does vastly improve what we got. Your development of Reva and Nari is spot on. There are some things that were dumb that seem difficult to correct but I say good job.
The one thing that would need to change. Perhaps when Kenobi asks Tala to take Leia to the transport so he can confront Vader and see if he’s Anakin, it is here where Leia slips Lola in Ben’s cloak. Then when Reva questions Obiwan in Inquisitorious, she finds the droid in his cloak and puts a tracker on it. Of course, do we need Kenobi to have Lola on the moon when he confronts Vader? We just won’t have Leia more excited to see Lola than Ben when he visits them in the end.
I would leave in the Jedi being hung PURELY for it’s small connection to Andor and Clems hanging. To me it’s just a interesting connection and fact that the Empire actually hung who they potentially saw as more rebellious threats.
I honestly hate this show, however the person who edited down into a film (Kai Patterson) actually made it watchable. I feel as though if Darth Vader and Obi Wan didn’t fight each other but saw each other a single time at the end of the show it would have been a more powerful and heart wrenching moment. I also think bringing Leia in was a mistake. Imagine if instead of bringing Leia in they instead followed through with their original idea of Obi Wan and Commander Cody reuniting and hunting Darth Maul and his crime syndicate. They would’ve been able to make a more mature show and a more thought provoking one, but Disney has to pander towards their desired audience of children. They forget that the vast majority of their audience is over 20 now, and we desperately need a Star Wars show that takes itself seriously (like Andor but with light sabers). Again the film cut is superior, because of it I will never rewatch the series. I just wish they made a series good enough for a rewatch.
Thats what makes these reviews so good. They dont blind themselves to the flaws of the series, but they make the best of what was shown, and allow others to maybe rethink their own issues with the series
That rewrite would have been far better. I actually felt something a few times there. All the weird things, conveniences, and occasional lazy dialogue compounded into me feeling the show doesn't care. I couldnt see Obi-Wan, just Ewan. The directing was another part of it. You are one of many that see a great story where I just felt bad. Kai Patterson edited Kenobi to movie-length, and PixelJoker95 has his own one coming, which adds alot of vfx and new shots. Check out the trailers for that.
Agree it’s almost impossible to find people that do a good analyze of the shows. Instead we just get people that hate the whole show because of a few sidesteps
Ewan Mcgregor called out the people who bullied Moses Ingram, and he said he doesn't see them as Star Wars fans. I'm with him, I refuse to call such people fans.
@@dualmoldedb3088that's such a dumb take. Someone can have very critical analysis of a show, disliking it and explaining with proper arguments why they dislike it, yet you'd go "nah he just hates the whole show, that's not a good analysis" Obi-Wan did not have "just a few side-steps". It has many issues. People just look past those because of their nostalgia for Obi-Wan as a character and the interactions he has with Vader. That's it. It's a failure in writing, execution and especially character assassination in a lot of ways. That's not just "a few sidesteps"
The only change in your story I would make is that perhaps Reva hates Obi-Wan is because she saw the holotape of him were he said: 'do not return to the temple' and because of this nobody was there to help her when she was injured.
To me, Reva represents all of the Children that the Jedi failed to protect. As much as Leia does, Reva reminds Obi Wan of his responsibilities to protecting the vulnerable.
I don't think a lot of people have any problem with the plot concepts introduced in this series. You've mentioned a lot of cool details, which were valid, but personally for me all of them were overshadowed by inconsistency and laziness in writing. I just couldn't ignore bullshit when I see it on screen, and there were A LOT of bullshit moments and decisions. I wish Disney would understand that allocating more resources to production of such highly anticipated series is a must.
Kenobi had so much potential such a shame how it was mishandled, until I saw this video in my UA-cam feed I had happily forget for months that the show existed lol.
Vader effectively interrogating the daughter of one of the most powerful planets in the galaxy would be seen as an act of war. Reminder we are 15 years before the Death Star that had the sole intent on making sure that even if worlds did ally against the empire it would be pointless. The Emperor and Vader were still playing politics.
Ep 1, and the last 2 were probably the highlights of this series, i was super disappointed of the OBIWAN show. I was just happy for seeing Ewan and hayden atleast seeming to have some fun together.
I see the problems with the Obi Wan series, BUT , to be honest, I still think it's by far the best Star Wars we've had since George sold it. The moments with Hayden and Ewan are perfect and evoke so many emotions and represent the depth of Lucas' vision. The climax duel between Kenobi and Vader in this is one the alltime greatest scenes, imo. Beautifully tragic.
@@scottwallbank4794 I do love Andor!!! It's the best written disney Star Wars for sure. But to me, the crux of the story of the Kenobi series and the presence of Ewan and Hayden make it my favorite easily. Andor is a new feel and is great, but it is also different enough from George's style that it feels less like SW than Kenobi, imo.
If the script writters had just re-adapted the legends plot where Obi-Wan was compelled to face off the fallen Jedi A'sharad Hett, who had turned into a Tusken warlord by the time Luke was young, It would've turned out to be a much better conflict than the whole thing that we ended up having. I mean, come on. It's not like Disney was unfamiliar with taking elements from the former SW cannon.
19:58 The character development from Obiwan being crushed by the rocks was not on based in his passion to save Leia directly but rather obiwan forgiving himself for what happened to Anakin. If you recall the show before he thinks of Liea, you hear audio of a Anakins gradual fall to the darks side. This is why obiwan fails the first attempt of escaping the boulders above him. But like quigon, he meditates deeper to what truly matters and recalls his true purpose, to protect anakins children. This connects him to the force and in turn, allows him to lift the boulders that had him trapped.
IF there is a S2, i really wish they find a way to maybe show kenobi’s thoughts on his whole arc with maul while he trains with qui gon. maybe then on the other side show maul when he wasn’t in rebels and recreate that final death scene in live action
I can totally see where you're coming from in this video, and I don't think I've ever heard a perspective quite like this before, so I want to first say that I really do appreciate hearing your take on this show. For me, I think there are so many things that just don't make sense from a plot perspective. Obi-wan should never have left Luke and Tatooine in general, Leia should've never been involved in this story and shouldn't have met Obi-Wan, if this show is set 10 years after ROTS, Obi-Wan should know that Darth Vader is alive, or am I to believe that for 10 years Vader's name never reached Tatooine until Reva tells Obi-Wan that he's alive???, and that Vader just sat there doing nothing until this particular point in time??? Something's a bit off there. Vader knows who Reva is, and that she knows that he is Anakin Skywalker, but he just lets her live...Huh??? Even if Vader is having an emotional struggle, and inner turmoil, he's also still the angry, hateful, vengeful, murdering Sith Lord that will not hesitate to kill anyone who knew he was Anakin. Obi-Wan has to rush back over to Tatooine to save Luke and his family from being potentially killed by Reva, when the truth of the matter is, he should've never left Tatooine in the first place, and Leia shouldn't have been in this story. Why is Obi-Wan NOW able to lift all of these big rocks and throw them at Vader, when in the OT, he never displayed such strength in the force before. Obi-Wan was not naturally gifted with the force, and had to train really hard to get to where he was in ROTS. I mean, to be able to just do a powerful force push on general Grievous, was hard for him, but he trained hard and achieved that, but now all of a sudden, he can lift these huge rocks with relative ease??? I'm not even going to go there with Reva. Also, Qui-gon never finished his training with the wills, so how is he appearing as a force ghost to Obi-Wan...Though I will admit, it was good to see Liam Neeson reprise his roll as Qui-gon Jin. I could go on and on but you get what I mean. The story of a Jedi who failed his apprentice, being depressed, having nightmares of his failures, and losing his connection with the force, only then to go on a journey to find himself again and be the protecter and leader that he once was, is good, but it was poorly executed, in my opinion. I'm just not sold on how this show makes any sense from a plot standpoint.
Agreed. I don’t think Obi-Wan needed to leave Tattoine in order to find himself. And the whole cutting himself off from the force was dumb and completely out of character. I’m fine with him being depressed and trying to work through his trauma, but 10 years?! Really?! Obi-Wan isn’t one to sulk and give up. Maybe having the show set 1 or 2 years after ROTS would have made more sense, especially with him finding out that Darth Vader survived. Maybe instead of a duel between Kenobi and Vader just show flash backs to sparring sessions and missions that the 2 of them went on or missions with Qui Gon.
@@samkornrumph8545 I agree, cutting himself off from the force after master Yoda had told him to communicate with Qui Gon from the nether realm of the force, was stupid. How can you do that if you cut yourself off from the force?! I think if they had done the flashbacks more instead of Obi-Wan and Vader fighting, it would've made for a more interesting story that focuses on Obi-Wan's path to excepting what happened in order 66 and his failure with Anakin. I think it would've definitely fleshed out the continued story of Obi-Wan so much better.
@@moonlight_antonio It’s kinda funny when you think about it. Disney makes TLJ, then receives massive backlash from the fans and Mark Hamill on the treatment of Luke Skywalker cutting himself off from the force, sulking by himself, and considering murdering his nephew in his sleep. Then Disney decides to make a series about Obi-wan during his exile. So they think “How can we make a show the fans will enjoy? I got it! Let’s do the same thing that we did with Luke in TLJ that half the fans hated and divided the fandom, but let’s not make him an attempted murderer.” Wow can’t imagine why people don’t like the show. I’m fine with these characters going through bad situations and then having depression after the fact, but just stop making them pathetic and act out of character.
'scenario that damage people mentally are where a person passes away and that leaves another person with things unsaid that will never be said' i came to this for Obi Wan essay, got this personal attack instead 😅
8:15 No, sorry, it wasn't. The original Fallen Order fortress was very cool looking especially due to the lighting and the environment, which felt dark, heavy, but still had some color to it. The Kenobi series gives the environment that greenish/greyish color which I can't even describe, and the lighting is uniform as hell. All that makes the fortress and the cinematography of it less interesting and above all way less beautiful.
To me, the duel flashbacks are more than just a chance to throw in some prequel nostalgia, it's the point of no return for both of them. That's why they both think back to that specific practice duel throughout the episode. That was the moment they subconsciously realized who the other was and what their relationship truly meant. Vader was always a part of Anakin, and Obi-wan was always the one to appose him. They both subconsciously realized this during that practice duel, but only in hindsight do they both understand what that duel truly was in defining who they were. Even better, you can see where Anakin was mentally at that time, with beliefs that were only strengthened by the Clone Wars, which may or may not have been what Palpatine had planned for him from the beginning. There's a lot of fun layers to the flashbacks for sure....
Great vid as always, personally I loved the cinematography and acting, I would rate this show 7/10, I think reeva wasn’t necessarily needed, I’d rather have the 9th sister to return because we don’t see her die, i guess that idea is fan servicey but I would like to know her story more than just a small video game act
@@thegoldman25 I enjoyed the series for the most part, my least favorite episode was episode four. I also didn't like young princess Leia that much. I thought Riva was fine and I loved all the stuff with obi wan and vader. Vader was an absolute badass in this.
Damn, I think you are one of the first people to love the cinematography. Personally I thought that most of the fight scenes were way too dark, and many scenes were not established well. Gold man said there were too few wide shots, but then for that awful scene at the gate, they could have at least made the shots tight enough so you dont see how easy it would have been to just walk around it :) Still, happy for you that you found the cinematography beautiful, and there were some stunning shots in there for sure!
It's so strange to see such a variety of opinions on this show in the comments. Some of y'all have really turned to the dark side and trash on this show way too hard, but I do understand the frustration. I personally really like this show, I think Kenobi and Vader are great, I think it adds to Ep4 and Ep6 rather than take away from them like some believe, and it mostly works for me. It is full of missed potential still, but I don't think it was a waste at all.
The best part about the show became the worst part: Leia. I feel like Leia & Obi-wan having such a close relationship kinda altered my perception of ANH, and not in a good way. Honestly, emotionally, this show just didn’t really live up to what I felt like it should have been. This show should have left me in tears… instead it left me with … questions?
19:57 my take on Kenobi’s memories was George Lucas’s understanding of what was wrong with the Jedi: it’s rejection of attachments. By forming attachments to Luke and Leia, Obi wan demonstrates the light side is more powerful than the dark side.
I was very disappointed in Obi-Wan Kenobi show. I don't hate it blindly. I've watched the edited version of the series and it helps improves the show but I still have issues with it as a whole. I like your edits as well. There was so much potential in the show to be great/amazing which is way I'm more critical and think it failed. Lastly. There's a few bright spots in the show but now reflating on the series. All I can think is Imagine if ObI-Wan had the same treatment as Andor.
As someone who was underwhelmed with how Obi-Wan Kenobi played out, I really want a season 2 because there's so much potential to not only correct a lot of the story's mistakes but also further the character into his evolution from "Ewan McGregor" into "Alec Guinness." I especially think that if they included Maul in this journey it could do wonders beyond just fan service. We could learn more about Crimson Dawn (& how Maul lost it to Qi'ra) as well as how Obi-Wan learned to forgive the unforgivable as he seemed to genuinely harbor no ill will against the man who took both his master & lover by Rebels.
To say kenobi didn’t know anakin was alive, means that somehow during a nine year period not one person spoke of the empire and darth Vader ruling the galaxy. Since that isn’t likely, kenobi knows he is alive. In case u don’t remember, kenobi knows anakin is vader in revenge of the sith
This was a great overview of the series. Me personally, I enjoyed every episode thoroughly when it came out and I really loved every arc off of the main characters! This video opened my eyes to some of the problems this series had, but I don't think it really changes my overall opinion, and it's really refreshing to see someone praise this series and also just see opinions from a non-toxic fan nowadays
Great analysis of a mixed bag of a series..you didn't sh!t all over it but you also carefully analyzed the critical points in valid ways. This was a show I had very high expectations for and was not fully satisfied with.. but it wasn't ALL bad. Overall, it's serviceable to me, but I still feel that Disney could've done a LOT better than what they gave us.. could've done a LOT worse, too though 😅.
Ewan McGregor did his job well. He acted as he was told to. Deborah Cho is a relatively good director who also did her job well and directed one of my favorite episodes of Mandalorian. The writers did not do their job well. Not a fan. It was as if they were all disciples of the Ruin Johnson "Church of Subversion" and took delight in destroying our heroes while simultaneously forcing unlikeable side characters down our throats. Jedi: Survivor is the best canon SW story in the last 10 years.
The Kenobi tv show (plus this review after thinking back to years ago) along with everything else we’ve gotten since 2014. Made realize something. As much I miss George Lucas’s personal directorial touch on the franchise. However before George Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars. I always remember wanting more official stories out of the franchise. Yet George Lucas after the Prequels/The Clone Wars constant criticisms. I can’t imagine him wanting to make more Star Wars movies or shows. Now thinking about all of the things we gotten since the buy out. Star Wars fans (regardless of the objective quality of what we got) have more movies and tv shows then we’ve ever gotten before. It is truly a plentiful time to be a Star Wars fan. Again regardless of whether or not you liked any of the movies or shows. It is truly an wonderfully strange time indeed. Also the Kenobi show is decent/pretty good at times.
I was surprised when this video came out, because I couldn't believe it had been a year since kenobi had been released. And now this video itself is one year old. Wow.
The writing in this show was horrendous. Reminded me of rings of power type writing. I don't have enough energy to break down all the plot issues. I also think it's laughable that a bunch of people think it's better than why prequel story.
I'd argue Reva works because she shows what Anakin could have been, someone who was on the same dark path but was able to make the right choice before it was too late. Obi Wan couldn't save Anakin, but he could save Reva
They just completely missed the mark with Reva. She could really be a great addition to the show if only the writers gave her a decent arc. I kinda liked that she was waiting to get her revenge on Vader. What took me out completely - she looked waaaay too soft for an inquisitor. Never bought any ,,Oh I'm Evil'' lines from her. Zero visible dark side corruption. I'm not saying she should give Malgus or Palps, but some little alterations would be appreciated, maybe some cyborg elements, red or yellow eyes, anything really. She was looking like a cosplay star wars kid that pretends to be a baddie. The stabbing thing was also ridiculous... I'd rather see her hide during order 66 than receive a lightsaber stab TO THE CHEST FROM MF ANAKIN SKYWALKER (!!!) and survive, then receive another one in a same fucking spot ... That's just dumb. But her acting was great, I think she did awesome job with what she was given. So please don't hate on the actress, if you want someone to blame, blame the writers.
Great video! One year later and I still find the series to be pretty good. Nothing bad or great and it's my third favorite Star Wars TV show of all time
Honestly, Im new to the channel, and you undoubtedly have some of the most in-depth, objective, and respectful reviews of star wars out there. It's so refreshing to see this as most of star wars youtube is polarized and undestandbly emotional on both ends of the fandom. Also, I share alot of your opinions too. So, thank you for all these videos as I've been obsessed with them and they make me nostalgic.
29:00 I'm almost 100% certain this was intended as Palpatine being afraid vader had mixed feelings deep down and might rejoin obiwan if he continued pursuing him.
I would love a tv show showing Kit Fisto and what he was up to during the bigger SW timeline apart from what we got in the clone wars tv show. I think an anthology show about the jedis and those we met vaguely during the og and prequel movies would be amazing.
@@thegoldman25 Are you planning on reviewing those as well? I absolutely adored them and really think that short-stories like those can offer so much to star wars, not even just animated, but in live-action as well
Honestly this had no business being a TV series. You can (And people have) cut out a lot of the fluff and this is a really solid Star Wars Movie. The same could be said for a lot of these Disney+ shows though tbf..
We all wanted fresh out the oven Chrispy Cream and what we got was day old gas station. It somewhat resembles a Crispy Cream. It knows what we want and it did enough to entice us, we were hungry. But as soon as we bit in we knew what it was.... and we ate the whole thing anyways. Burned again. This show should have been the best of the best.
I personally think that even though this show is probably one of the worst star wars show but it has some of the best star wars moments ever. At the end of the day, it should've been a film.
Hello! To answer your point about Obi Wan leaving Anakin on Mustafar it was his only choice. He couldn’t kill Anakin because Anakin was unarmed (as showcased with Obi Wan taking his lightsaber) Obi Wan could never kill Anakin because it goes against the Jedi code. Since Episode 1 it was established that Obi Wan was strict with the code and his teachings. Only learning from his failure in episode 3 which translates to the original trilogy. Leaving Anakin was the only choice Obi Wan had as was proven through his characterization and dialogue. There’s also the opening scene in episode 3 where Anakin, after killing dooku, says, “I shouldn’t have done that it’s not the Jedi way”. The movie makes it blatantly and explicitly clear that Jedi do not kill unarmed or defeated opponents.
I can't believe this man just said that he liked the scene where Reva attacks Luke's house. It might even be worse than the forest chase scene. There is no way Reva couldn't handily kill 2 farmers. The entire scene is so goofy.
I have an argument for how Obi-Wan has some responsibility for Darth Vader. Obi-Wan was too attached to going on adventures with his closest friend. He let that attachment overpower his duty to report that Anakin was secretly married. While it would hurt a lot in the moment, being forced out of the Jedi Order is the best thing that could ever happen to Anakin. Anakin would be so much happier if he didn't need to keep his love a secret! The Jedi Order was doing nothing for Anakin other than inflating his unhealthy ego (especially after Ashoka left). And Anakin and Obi-Wan could still be together in their free time. Darth Vader never would have happened if Obi-Wan had the courage to do his job. Unrelated, but I understand Vader letting Reva live. Reva was shown to not be any threat to Vader, she barely inconvenienced him in their "fight". Afterwards, Vader said Reva was so weak she wasn't even worth killing (but in his poetic, Vader-y way). Overall this was a great analysis! Your videos always make me notice more symbolism in the art I love
This is an amazing analysis of the brilliance and deep attention to character details and development in this show. I LOVED Obiwan series it’s one of my favourite SW content overall.
I disagree about your assessment of Palpatine and Vader. Palpatine threatening Vader to not pursue Obi Wan anymore, precisely achieved the mission of keeping Vader angry. The risk that Vader finds and kills Obi Wan, and achieves peace, means there is a chance Vader might turn back towards good. Alternatively, the risk that Obi Wan defeats Vader, means Palpatine will be humiliated publicly with his right hand man defeated, and he will then be vulnerable for growing resistance against himself. It makes perfect sense for Palpatine to tell Vader to let Obi Wan go.
_"Did we need to see this story being told?"_ "And I cannot tell you how much I hate this question. There has never been a story that was necessary or needed to happen. After A New Hope came out, The Empire Strikes Back was not a 'necessary story'. After the originals came out, the prequels were not 'necessary stories'. When Disney bought Star Wars, the sequels and spin-offs were not 'necessary stories'." THANK YOU!! FINALLY someone else is saying this!
Well this show doesn't really add much value to the overall Star Wars story. If anything, it opens up plot holes. It's just overall very poorly written

@@ofarra9588 it is the same. He did pulled the same stunt with his Boba video. Lazy af

Just imagine the emotional toll of having someone you aspire to be like be the one who's destroyed everything you hold dear.
that would've been really cool!
Still would take this show any day over The Book of Boba Fett and the surprisingly underwhelming Mando S3
i have mixed feelings too
I’m with you. Warts and all, this is still much better than Boba Fett and S3 of Mando
@@issiahsilva I enjoyed mando S3 for the most part, but yeah this show is way better than bobf and that.
The show literally just completely ruins the impact of revenge of the sith and contradicts a new hope. Horribly written and executed, it completely rips off other material like rebels and the fallen order games in particular
That's how I feel. It wasn't terrible, but it's a show that very easily should have been a 10/10 and it was like a 7 or 7.5.
im sorry but the only good things about this show is having hayden and ewan back, prequel flashbacks and that fantastic finale battle. i hate how it focused so much on reva and obi wan dealing with a fetch quest... almost felt like watching the main character do side quests lmao

Well, in the comics hes also not always kneeling to the emperor. Also the emperor calls Vader very often his "friend"
I loved the first episode
The first episode was good except for reva
God, we Star Wars fans are easily pleased, we see a clone from a specific legion(501st) and get instantly hard. Still a terrible show tho.
What you said about anakin and Vader actually feeling like the same person would make more sense if the show wasn't set 10 years later. I feel like it's been so long that he'd be more Vader like, but maybe not
fair
I think this is a really cool twist on the classic "demon within", because here the demon is actually the supressed good guy, embedded in the darkness of vader.
i feel like it somewhat makes sense because of how little Anakin/Vader would have to address his feelings about Obi-Wan
it makes sense that someone who was his master and basically his brother who he sees as a traitor and the person who made him wear the vader suit would kinda revert to his older state rather than the cooler, more in control vader
you don't just get almost murdered by your brother and lose your wife and not have any remaining trauma years later- especially if you never have to face it
I actually think Vader did have a character arc and just like Obi Wan he couldn't let go of Anakin because of his hatred of Obi Wan but losing a second time or perhaps Obi Wan apologizing allowed him to let go of that last shred of Anakin
What should’ve been an introspection into the life of a broken yet hopeful man charged with the task of protecting the son of his best friend from said friend who he believes he killed, turned into a clusterfuck of fan service and terribly choreographed fights
So horrible smh this definitely was not what I would have hoped for in my mind.
So many things SHATTER the canon…..
Fully agree
The writers have said they have ideas for a 2nd and even 3rd season. The plans wouldn't involve Vader, but I don't remember if they said they would stay on Tatooine. They want to explore why Obi-Wan was so ready to sacrifice himself on the Death Star. Looking back, it's weird how quickly Obi-Wan accepted his death. I didn't originally want a season 2, but I think this idea would be great to explore.
Something akin to Yoda's journey from the Clone Wars in Season six would be cool
Oh god please don't...
i think the reason he accepted his death is because a second before he sees luke and leia together, so he knows he completed his mission in life which was to protect those kids, or at least luke
@@MrWord283and he knew that there wasn’t any way he could escape from or defeat Vader. Letting go and joining with the Cosmic Force was also the completion of his training.
So what they should have done in season 1
I swear this is the most infuriating show they made
An obi wan kenobi show us great but it needs ru be about kenobi and given the situation needs to be isolating and somewhat depressing as he reflected on his time as a Jedi and the horrors he couldn’t stop
Not the reva and liea show starring Vader and this guy who resembles kenobi
@20:20 Obi-Wan being in the bottom of a pit barely keeping the rocks above him from crushing him was symbolic. The more he dwelt on his failures the more the rocks (aka guilt, shame, regret) weighed down on him, keeping him in the pit that his apprentice had put him. Only by letting go of his guilt was Obi-Wan able to push away the things that were weighing him down. When he jumped out of that pit, that was the moment when Obi-Wan was himself again.
Congrats, you are writing the script for the actual writers

There’s a ton of character potential already in Obi-Wan learning of the Lars family (skipped out on in Ep3, he just shows up and drops off a baby without saying a word), not to mention adapting to life on Tatooine - especially facing the Tusken Raiders, who mistake him for the rumored sorcerer who murdered an entire tribe years prior, so Obi-Wan has to reckon witb Anakin’s actions. It would explain how Obi-Wan knows how to scare Tuskens away from Luke, too.
Also, re: budget; this show had a rumored $25 million PER EPISODE.
Ahsoka hit one side of mask, Obi hit opposite side of Vaders mask
Luke….Removed it completely to reveal Return of Anakin or Return of The Jedi

Great review the force is strong with you
Well, it is definitely refreshing to hear someone actually praise this series.
😊😊😊😊
He made waaaaay too many ridiculous excuses for this show tho.... Something Disney fans tend to do waaaaay too often

For dumb movie fun it is quite enjoyable.

It's a really fantastic review style, keep it up!
Glad you like them!
Honestly, a lot of my frustrations with this show come down to story choices that contradict a lot of what we know in Star Wars lore.
For example:
-Obi-Wan and Vader meeting even though A New Hope established their battle on the Death Star was the first time they had seen each other.
-Leia and Obi-Wan meeting despite the fact that A New Hope implies they’ve never met.
-Obi-Wan being rusty in his force powers despite part of the reason him being on Tatooine is so he can further his training in the Force.
its a retcon moreso than a contradiction

I really liked this show when it came out but with hindsight I feel like it was a bit of a missed opportunity. Now if you love this show don’t think i’m trying to invalidate those feelings. I just personally feel like the dhow could have explored Obi Wan’s trauma more and been more introspective than just another jedi adventure. I also feel like this should have been a movie instead of a tv show cause imo it feels like the story could have served a purpose as a two hour film than 6 episodes.
I can agree with a lot of this
I was really confused as to why you were talking about the Obi-Wan show in a Force Awakens video... and then I realized UA-cam had auto-played to the next video!
I like how you almost make it make sense. Still can’t get behind this series.
I really think the main story would have made one of the best star wars stories but the execution fell short.
I would leave in the Jedi being hung PURELY for it’s small connection to Andor and Clems hanging. To me it’s just a interesting connection and fact that the Empire actually hung who they potentially saw as more rebellious threats.
i see
I honestly hate this show, however the person who edited down into a film (Kai Patterson) actually made it watchable. I just wish they made a series good enough for a rewatch.
you make some fair points
I'd suggest Vader just walking through the fire. It's a 'fire' shot and makes sense.
It looked pretty damn cool

Ewan Mcgregor called out the people who bullied Moses Ingram, and he said he doesn't see them as Star Wars fans. I'm with him, I refuse to call such people fans.
@@dragonstormxhating something is alright unless if your going to personally attacking the creator
@@dualmoldedb3088that's such a dumb take. Someone can have very critical analysis of a show, disliking it and explaining with proper arguments why they dislike it, yet you'd go "nah he just hates the whole show, that's not a good analysis"
Obi-Wan did not have "just a few side-steps".
Ohhhhhhh that’s a really good idea. Way better than mine
@@thegoldman25 thx!!!
Man bro I’m glad your still making content. I know the chatooine show stopped but glad to see I can still hear your opinion on things. Thanks man
To me, Reva represents all of the Children that the Jedi failed to protect. As much as Leia does, Reva reminds Obi Wan of his responsibilities to protecting the vulnerable.
been on a binge for most of your videos and now this shows up! Lucky me
Enjoy!
@@thegoldman25 thank you very much, I will
I don't think a lot of people have any problem with the plot concepts introduced in this series.
You are totally correct. I guess it matters to the viewer which is more important, and to me the story is more important
Kenobi had so much potential such a shame how it was mishandled, until I saw this video in my UA-cam feed I had happily forget for months that the show existed lol.
The fact people even accept this proves anyone can make anything worth watching
Vader effectively interrogating the daughter of one of the most powerful planets in the galaxy would be seen as an act of war. Reminder we are 15 years before the Death Star that had the sole intent on making sure that even if worlds did ally against the empire it would be pointless.
The Emperor and Vader were still playing politics.
Yeah roasting of the cousin was one of my all time favorite snark moments
Have you watched Andor? That series felt far superior, so I'd be interested if you held that view with that context.
I am 3 video's in to your channel and you are quickly becoming one of the best breakdown channels iv seen to date and I really enjoy breakdown video's
Thank you so much! Which ones did you watch?
Game of thrones, avatar and currently going through kenobi but I will be watching lotr, hotd and a alot more
So glad you are enjoying them!
This is the only star wars show I have finished and the only one I watched week to week. Loved it with its flaws and all
That's awesome!
'scenario that damage people mentally are where a person passes away and that leaves another person with things unsaid that will never be said'
i came to this for Obi Wan essay, got this personal attack instead 😅
Great analysis and synopsis. I like your changes and your more balanced review.
Leia had Padme's bleeding heart. Even before the prequels existed.
She definitely did, and so did Luke
@The Gold Man A heart that saved the galaxy from the Empire, too.
One of the greatest crimes foisted upon our screens
Rebels did the best job of showing General Kenobi transitioning to Ben Kenobi. And he was only in that episode for like 10 minutes
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Well if you played the new survivor game you know why she couldn’t be in the show
@@dualmoldedb3088 oh ok, thanks for enlightening me
@@thegoldman25 I enjoyed the series for the most part, my least favorite episode was episode four.
Gold man said there were too few wide shots, but then for that awful scene at the gate, they could have at least made the shots tight enough so you dont see how easy it would have been to just walk around it :)
Still, happy for you that you found the cinematography beautiful, and there were some stunning shots in there for sure!
Waited in line in the 70's and still love the movies now found Disney + and binge watching all of it
I enjoyed the series for the most part. I didn't like young princess Leia that much though, but I thought Riva was fine.
Opposite for me. Reva was annoying the entire time almost to me.

Thank you so much!!!!
I think im fine with no season 2
Glad you enjoyed it!
Obi Wan being buried by the rocks is a great visual representation of the ten years he spent buried in depression and guilt.
Couldn't agree more, thanks for watching!
Also the Kenobi show is decent/pretty good at times.
he'll never come back
I was surprised when this video came out, because I couldn't believe it had been a year since kenobi had been released. And now this video itself is one year old. Wow.
The writing in this show was horrendous. Reminded me of rings of power type writing. I don't have enough energy to break down all the plot issues. I also think it's laughable that a bunch of people think it's better than why prequel story.
it could've been better, but I like it and think its far better than the prequels
It was Mace Windu’s fault. If he’d let Anakin come with him to the Senate to confront the Chancellor, he never would’ve turned.
thats why i think Kenobi was really underrated show
definitely underrated
Oh wow so it's been over a year since the last time I watched anything Star Wars? Wow... how the time flies when you're having fun
Nothing bad or great and it's my third favorite Star Wars TV show of all time
Thanks for watching comet star!

it certainly had that potential
I personally think that even though this show is probably one of the worst star wars show but it has some of the best star wars moments ever. At the end of the day, it should've been a film.
a lot of people share that sentiment
@@thegoldman25 apparently it was meant to be a trilogy with this show basically covering what the first film would’ve been
While this show had many many flaws I think I still enjoyed it overall
I've been looking forward to this video.
I've been looking forward to this comment
As a big fan of Obi-Wan kenobi, we don't need this serie
Agreed, it was completely trash and disappointing. No fault on Ewan or Haden
_"Did we need to see this story being told?"_ "And I cannot tell you how much I hate this question. There has never been a story that was necessary or needed to happen.
