- We met fellow UA-camr Ian at the Gold coast and we had a chat about what can be improved on the Atto 3 and where BYD will be in 2 years time.
New supply of high quality BYD Atto 3 parts at very competitive prices in Sydney Australia.

My tyres are just fine, however, I have only done 4000ks. I love my Atto. I agree, the software could be better, however, it is better than what I have previously owned. We have just returned from a trip to China. BYD is everywhere, and I also believe they are going to be huge. The number of EVs on the road, and different makes and models is incredible. We passed a BYD Factory while we were on tour. We certainly could not miss all the green number plates and from many brands. I could not believe how much China has developed since our last trip in 2011. The amount of new infrastructure is crazy. We are already planning our next trip back there in 2024. Thanks for sharing this interesting discussion.
We just came back from China and I really think the Green number plates are a good idea. There are so many different EV's over there and the amount of development is amazing. Just imagine having hi speed trains here!
Agree with pretty much everything said. I'm learning to control my foot on the pedal to get fast acceleration with out the slip. But high torque on front wheel is the issue. I mostly drive in eco and don't have to think about. Sports mode is fun on the odd occasion. The latest update has fixed the most annoying aspect of the pedestrian warning noise. So happy BYD are listening.
BYD seems to be doing more to improve their cars than any other car company.
Love my Atto 3! Wish list improvements:
*Being able to turn off charging via the app.
*Having a V2L output voltage of 240V, not the anaemic 220V.
*When you turn on cruise control, It should start at the speed you're doing. Not start from 35 km/h.
*Shouldn't show totally unrealistic range estimate.
The cruise control does start at the speed you're doing?
Totally agree about controlling smart charging from the app - though my getaround for that is using the charger's app.
My main problem is the auto dimming screen with headlights in foggy daylight and I wish you could remap the physical buttons to control more climate control.
Great episode guys. The Michelin tyres were a big selling point for me on the MG. Hats off for sharing life with an EV. 👍🔋🇦🇺
I appreciate your opinion regarding the supplied Batman tyres. I am not a race driver or racing enthusiast but I find the batman tyres are quite ok. I agree that some don't like them because of the unknown brand name.
First time I have not driven on Batman Tyres and I could say Contis are better. Can I justify dropping $1000 on new tyres, maybe when I get to 25000km out of the Batmans.
Agree, they do the job ok. I understand they have low rolling resistance, important for EV range, but it probably compromises handling to some extent.
Cheers won’t be changing the tires when I get mine
Great stuff guys 👍
I have a seal on order which I'm excited about. I agree that BYD are going to be huge in the short term, what concerns me is that they seem to be flooding the market with many different models constantly instead of refining a select few.
Seal is going to be awesome especially Premium and Performance. Now waiting on the Model Y competitor to keep Tesla honest.
@@Carnormous the Song L looks incredible...even better than the sea lion (which also looks ok)...not sure if it's coming to Australia though
flooding the market is good because BYD doesn't want you to look elsewhere like tesla with literally only 2 models

In china, dolphins have capacity to do an auto-parking and auto drive, but here we can’t due to the regulations. Meanwhile top one ai car it is Huawei, technology, safety all brilliant . Unfortunately we living in Australia will never bring that in. Hopefully BYD can catch up on that.
I'm finding the Atlas tyres are fine. They're very quiet and seem to run ok even in the rain. Just don't floor the throttle in sport mode. 😉 I also preferred that the Atto 3 felt like a regular car. Tesla was too much of a change. I think BYD has been smart in retaining that familiarity as people transition to EVs.
Great conversation, wish was longer
Great stuff and since we’re on the topic my new BYD in the middleast doesn’t open the boot automatically or close it with the remote fob. Neither is the boot height adjust option even available in the electronic console. It’s missing. Would be great if Byd could roll out standard updates and standardize basic car functions in all countries simultaneously!!
Tyres are fine binnacle font needs to be larger would be great to have an 11 kWh onboard charger update and sort out handshake issues with Tesla V3 chargers 😁👍
Sentry mode please
Enjoyed that.. Thanks
So what additional Apps would you like BYD add, or improve on the Atto 3?
I think the general user interface is a bit dated and not logical. BYD would be seen as more premium if it had slick operating system.
I wish BYD would fix the navigation so your preferences are saved. By default it avoids Highways which is crazy and I have been caught out a few times with this bug.
Every time there is an update I now turn off avoid highways, I should not have to but this map is the best for finding chargers nearby.
@@CarnormousYou can untick "Avoid Highways", but the next time you turn on the car it is ticked on again. Do you find that to be true....very annoying.
@@sammaimas155I don't believe that is correct, I found that only happened after an update.
Hello Chris, great conversation and points re the Atto 3.
Does BYD still has different Warranty period on different parts of the car? Eg. infotainment only got 3 years. Thanks
If you read the fine print from other manufacture, you will see the warranty is similar
Wow both of my favourite Australian BYD UA-camrs on the same channel, I recently changed my Batman tyres at 38,000kms 3 tyres probably had another 12,000 kms tread left one tyre probably 5,000kms left a few weeks ago it was raining heavily in QLD and the front tyres started to let go at a constant high speed, it felt unsafe so I changed them to Continental 235/ 55 R18 ecocontact 6, a lot less slipping now very happy with Continentals, I do Rideshare that’s why I have high km’s
I drive on batman tyres and then drove the Atto3 with the 215 contis and thought the tyre noise was lower and the ride smoother, Ian who owned the car found it hard to tell the difference from the Atlas Batman tyres.
Hi! Please do a comparison in range using the different tyres..atlas vs continental ! Im thinking of doing the opposite of what u did on tyre change
And what is Rideshare?

I'm finding on many reviews of EV's that the Cruise Control on any car is overly emphasised and criticised. I've never used Cruise control and i've driven many long trips. Now in my 60's I still enjoy driving and paying attention to my surroundings especially on Country roads. I think BYD hasn't got One pedal Driving as brake rusting and not being greased/serviced means One Pedal cars are replacing their discs early. It should be an option like in a Leaf so you can change it up. One pedal great for commutIng Traffic Jams. Switching off the annoying Lane keep assist which on some vehicles tries to steer you into oncoming traffic should be on a personalised list for that driver who chooses not to use it. And it should be a permanent setting.
I agree 😊
Oh good it's not just me wondering why i can't show the speedometer on the infotainment screen and have a larger cruise display
Not possible with the current BYD software.
I guess point upgrades are still hard in the automotive world due to regulatory oversight and qualifying for safety. You don't want to break something that isn't killing people
@@davidmcsween its almost impossible to see the set speed limit on the ACC . I have been in contact with BYD and they say they are non-comital about it, I have told them it's a safety issue ...still no action. What action can we take?
Omg this! Yes it's so frustrating I've found that I have to flick the button instead of pushing it down to set the speed. Glad it isn't just me
Good interview.
Thank you.
I wonder if they do a model refresh in 24' with better regen they will do an OTA update for existing Atto 3s?
Have their been many ATA updates of consequence in last six months, or is what you get now pretty much it?
Next update will BYD store for adding apps. UA-cam, Neflex & Browser
What about the smal 12 volts batteri.. my discharges to fast..the dealer has order a new 12v bstteri...but now its impossibl to get one from BYD.. I got a Kia batteri installed by the dealer, and this was approved by BYD.
Why this problem .. I turned on the heating in the app.. aircon det at 26 degr. and the car did run for about 15 min... When I csme out the 12v batteri wss totalt drained.
So what to do, to avoid this12v batteri problem.. now I dont use the app that way...
Have you any solution to this problem.
The car is 6 monthe old
But made in late 2022.
Dont drive a lot, about 60 kilometers a week.
Are you saying that the vehicle drive battery will run out of using the air-conditioning for 15 mins?
@@davidmcsween Its the 12v battery that I have problem with . Not the big Battery..
If starting the aircon with the app and turn on the heating at 26 degrees ..had the aircon on for about 15.. 20 minuts .. then starting the car.. it dident start .. needed to call for the BYD rescue service. . They started the car with a jumpstarter .
Perhaps my 12v start battery was a bad one from start..
@bertiloleandersson927 Yeah, I expect it was bad. How old was it. I asked when I bought mine, and it has just a 12-month warranty, which seems odd as regular 12v batteries have 3-4 year warranties
@@davidmcsween I bought the car 2023.05 ..so its new . I vill get a new battery in due time.. i suppose.
I have many complaints not just tyres. A3 will lurch and change direction at speed on worn bendy roads. This is actually dangerous as the jerk will almost pull the steering wheel out of your hands. I assume the cameras / radar system are poorly designed Certainly no match for the old Subaru Impreza where none of these things were evident. . The lane assist system is like a drunk lurching down a road. My old Subaru could drive for kms and follow the centre of the road on winding roads. The A3 gets lost. The light dipping system will dip lights on winding roads where the reflective arrows are indicating a blind corner so you enter in the dark with no vision. I do a lot of high speed night driving - The high beam is useless even though the low beam is superb. The seats have no adjustable head rest and again very tiring on a long trip. My wife hates the fact there is no remote door button on the left side requiring putting shopping on the ground while you find keys My old Land Cruiser 7 years old has proximity door sensors on all 4 doors. For an expensive car A3 it is far from perfect. I could go on - radio is useless outside city limits etc. I will never buy another one. The electric car system is easy and reliable and charging easy with home 3 phase charger. If,I could read the small print on the screen I might know what is activity is being communicated but try😮 reading a pale green print with a font equivalent to size 8 at high speed is a recipe for disaster. In some ways the car is not fit for purpose. OTA updates have never addressed these issues. I live in a small country town where we have 4 A3s and my complaints and observation s are shared. Will these be included in your next U-tube production?
You do your own video, if they are not his findings why would he include them.
Hi there Chris. I must take issue with Ian's opening comments about the Model Y feeling like an iPhone on wheels at 01:45. I completely agree him. This is exactly how I summed up my now deceased Tesla Model Y - it was written off in an accident October the 1st by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his big 4X4 with bull bar and drove into the side of my MY. Anyway, I thought that the very thing that made the Tesla Model Y so good, was the fact that it was just like an Apple product. It's no surprise after all as Musk is ex Apple as I'm sure you're aware. I also have an Atto 3 and was one of the very early adopters following Sam Evans reports on it February 2022. I have very few regrets apart from the atrocious style of the interior and the stupid gym theme going on with the guitar strings in the door where large pockets could be for useful stuff like water bottles. Anyway, whilst the Atto 3 runs on Android and is reasonably responsive and certainly useable, the software is not a patch on the Tesla offering / Apple clone software. The Tesla is almost perfect in every detail. Why would you seem to class this as some drawback to Tesla ownership? You've already advised you have an iPhone when you could use an Android if you wanted to. A bit confused. Definitely BYD needs to improve the user experience and the App needs to be far more like an Apple iOS App like Tesla offers. Proper keyless entry for one.
Hi Lucien, thank you for your comment. I prefer BYD over Tesla because I prefer android and BYD prices:)
No. BYD should push their evolution their way to differentiate from Tesla. As long as they compete in similar areas of usability they should have different approaches. Just because you don't like the interior means nothing.
How is Musk ex Apple? He has had nothing to do with Apple and has critised them in the past. You have got this completely wrong.
"Musk is ex Apple" Musk has never been "ex-Apple". Where did you get this from? Musk is an entrepreneur who has never been an employee of any company.
How do I get my Atto 3 to give me voice warning if I exceed the speed limit. Thanks
Thats an easy one look up speed warning in the car manual. 1.7 software has the manual right on the touchscreen.
my door handle lock/unlock button on the outside of door has never worked, since i got the car in june, so far the dealer has not fixed it.
That's very disappointing! Hope it gets fixed soon.
Recently drove an Atto 3 in the Netherlands. Great car to drive. But the software is far below par: traffic sign recognition (complete failure), navigation (charging stations not inluded), blindspot (sometimes camera, sometimes not), adaptive cruise control (not really practical). An VW ice 4 years old is far better in this. Software updates are not really adressing these issues. A nogo for me. Actually the poor sofware ruins the pleasure of driving this car, too many wrong warnings.
Not for me in Australia. It's not perfect car but I don't get any warning sounds so I am happy.
The Atto is a great comfortable vehicle with lots of features for a great price.
However, for me its also got a few minor but very annoying problems that could be easily fixed. Both relate to the driver's binnacle. 1. It needs a clip on sun shade (I might yet 3D print one). 2. The speed limit sign and the set speed display on the binnacle are very hard to read. Both need fonts with improved size and contrast. The set speed, with light green font on light blue background is all but impossible to see, spoiling the otherwise excellent adaptive speed control system.
At speeds I drive (average 90kmh) I have found the Atto can comfortably get 350km range with about 50km in reserve.
The practical 'best range' speed (about 80kmh) will get ranges up to 420-430 km. The claimed range of around 450km is probably achievable but only under ideal conditions and speed around 75kmh.
The reality is the BYD is fairly draggy (compared to say the TM3) and potential range drops quickly at speeds above 90kmh. You can fold the mirrors back at speed but I havent done a study to see whether this improves energy consumption.
We use our vehicle around Canberra for mainly local running, regular trips to the coast (165km) and Sydney (320km). We mainly give it a 100% slow charge at home once per week and thats it. We only use commercial fast chargers when we go to Sydney.
For our use case it is an almost perfect vehicle.
Im sticking with my Atto 3 but I was really impressed with the Dolphin premium. Practicalities aside Dolphin drives and handles better due to lower non suv platform. Performance wise I would choose the Dolphin any day of the week.
@@Carnormous Yes, the height of the Atto probably does detract from handling, particularly fast cornering. It does however, have some advantages. Firstly, the clearance under the car is good so can handle rough roads. For example one gravel driveway we need to access is no problem for the Atto, however, the Tesla M3 sometimes scrapes, not good in an EV. Secondly for old people like me the higher seating means access is very good. I find getting in and out of the TM3 quite difficult as it is very low.
yes, i have the exact same problem on seeing the ACC set speed. The Green is too insipid against the blue background and the font is small. It would be so easy for them to change the font color to that of the speedo. How do you get any action on this?. I have written to them on several occasions but no avail. I find this dangerous not being able to see the set speed. I have tried all the combinations of intensity and dark/light/ auto. Nothing really improves it .
Yea, ATTO 3 has Android screen, not a fruit one that is why you bought it :)
1:40 that is exactly it and literally Elon Musk said this, he wants Tesla to be like an apple product.
There is an official statement of his, a tweet (before it was bought) or something, saying this.
Sadly that is the problem, the system is developed like a bloody tablet and not like a car.
That is my problem as well. I wish to buy an EV, and Tesla is the only option. Everything else out there is severely overpriced, and is a far worse bang for the buck. And is not like tesla is cheap in any way, but tesla in the electric tech field is far superior to the others. Performance, efficiency, is much better. Because the others don't want to make EVs desirable. They need the combustion tech to still sell very well because their business model of stealerships abusing owners is what makes them their current profits.
And i'm sure they will invent the bEV with belts and sensors and that needs oil change. I am 100% sure they will invent such a Battery Electric Vehicle.
Toyota is trying their best with their stupid hydrogen battery electric vehicle and it ain't working (because of the stupidity of it), and the others will invent the electric vehicle that runs on some sort of fuel and needs changing belts and oils.
But buying a tesla has that problem with the car spying on you and (again, was made public) various individuals watch your videos). Strangers can see your private property recordings without your knowledge or consent.
Hi. As I wrote above commenting on what Ian had said in the video, I don't understand why the Tesla software being 'developed like a bloody tablet and not a car' is a problem. The Tesla software makes it super easy to navigate through the menus as it is, just like a tablet. I wonder if this is a generational concern that being said, I'm nearly 66 so have at least 14 years of using iOS experience so this doesn't faze me, instead I really appreciate it. What would you suggest? A return to lots of individual buttons? No, Tesla has got it right. The only option I made to my Model Y was to add a small display that I could see through the steering wheel to indicate speed, charge, turn signals etc. After I installed it, I found out that it had very little use. The BYD has a lot going for it and hopefully the software, although Android based, will get a lot better. Out of interest, in what country do you live? Here in Australia we have choices that are not Tesla such as BYD, ORA and MG. The list of affordable EVs is growing rapidly.
Well Lou, people are just different. Theres no right or wrong.
I like the new updated Tesla M3 and I can see why some people love it. Its just not the car for me. I would be glad to own it, but prefer the BYD Seal. The Seal is missing somethings (most notably the Tesla software), but it has things that I value higher. I think the Seal has vastly superior finish inside. Its a little busy, but the Tesla is too minimalistic (and I from the nordic countries :) ). The Seal has stalks for turn signals, head up display, better seats etc. Yes I would love (and hope) that BYD continues to make the software (a lot) better, but hey Tesla also has problems. Fantom braking was a deal breaker for me and Tesla vision isen't where it should be.
In Scandinavia the Supercharging network is great, but the rest of the charging infrastructure is also very good, so that is not a selling point for me.
Dosen't make the Tesla bad, just not for me
.@@LouDeVere
I'm off grid and use it for home backup so the lack of v2l made a Tesla a non starter for me.
Ian and Kate Cool experience with BYD is absolutely appalling... Read that story before buying from this car maker!!! 😳
