Very important information for this game.
    1. Hidden walls are opened by pressing the interact button, not by hitting them.
    2. There is a stat called ADP, which is tied to another stat called Agility. Agility increases the speed of your animations and increases your invincibility frames when dodging. It's not required to beat the game, but for a first time playthrough, it's recommended that your Agility be at 99 to 101 minimum. Attunement also increases Agility for magic builds.
    3. This game is LONG. Before Elden Ring came out, this was the longest Souls game.
    4. You can respec your stats, but how to do so I'll leave to you.
    5. You need to summon NPCs for bosses to continue their quest lines. The NPC MUST SURVIVE the fight for it to count.
    6. Bonfire aesthetics permanently increase the New Game level of the bonfire they are used at. This allows some very interesting builds.
    7. You can be invaded when hollow, but can only summon when human.
    8. The PVP in this game is great.
    9. This game has some of the best and worst of the Souls series.
    10. If the game says you should not put a lever, DON'T PULL THE GOD-DAMNED LEVER.
    11. Enemies will stop spawning after being killed around 11-15 times.
    12. There is a Covenant early on that makes the game harder, all enemies always respawn, and removes all summons. Don't join it.
    13. Online play is based on the total number of souls a Character has gained, not by Level. These can make online play REALLY imbalanced, but unless you are doing a PVP run, it shouldn't matter too much. Just be careful.
    14. Have fun!! It may be the weakest of the series, but it has a special place in the hearts of many, with some of the best characters and bosses!
    15. Your health will lower with every death, until around half. You can restore it with a human effigy
    16. You can upgrade the amount of flasks you can have. You can get 5-6 before the first boss if you explore enough

Moreover, in DS1 we're more or less 1000 years after Gwyn's sacrifice, the very gods who started the age of fire are still there and we get to fight them.
All of this in DS2 has blurred in a myth, we're so far in the future even the very names of the gods have changed if not plainly been forgotten like for Gwynevere (Divine Blessing item tells us that right away in Majula). A very cool and effective narrative device in my opinion.

    (No Spoilers)
Dark Souls 2 has a complicated history - the guy originally set on the project basically wanted to make a game like Elden Ring, but keep in mind it was running on the xbox 360/ps3 era consoles, and Elden Ring can have a hard time on a top-tier gaming pc. So very ambitious. He also wanted heavy themes of light and dark, including shadows and advanced (for the time) lighting, and for that they would have to write a completely new game engine rather than using the one they had already written for DS1. However, because so much time was spent making the game engine and making things visually stunning and beautiful there was hardly any gameplay a year before the game was to be released, so they fired that guy and hired a new director for the game, who didn't have time to then create an entirely new map, so they made some new areas and recycled and moved around areas that had already been made, which explains why there are some areas that connect that make absolutely no sense when you think about it. They also used motion capture for a lot of animations which is why so many attacks from enemies are so janky and the hit boxes feel impossible to predict. It also doesn't seem that they ever got the enemy placement right, either. To a lot of people, vanilla seems to have way to little and Scholar of the First Sin seems to have way too many.
There are tons of other strange decisions they made with Dark Souls 2, such as how much you level. In DS1, DS3, and Bloodborne, you should be aiming to be around level 100 by the end of the game. In Dark Souls 2 you can level way more often, and can reach level 100 before you're even close to halfway through the game. Also, your stamina depletes extremely fast at the beginning of the game, but the bar doesn't always grow when you level your character. Instead, sometimes the bar just shrinks slower. It's the same effect, but the inconsistency makes it extremely difficult to manage your stamina, because the amount of stamina consumed per move is constantly changing. They also tied i-frames to adaptability and animation speed to agility, which again adds to the unpredictable nature of the game. The boss count of Dark Souls 2 (if I remember correctly) is in the high forties while DS1, DS3, and Bloodborne have boss counts in the low twenties. Oh and the fact that it takes about 2,000 years to drink out of your estus flask. The max health going down for every death is also extremely punishing, especially to new players because of the unforgiving nature of dark souls.
tl/dr: people hate Dark Souls 2 because at times it plays super janky and some really weird decisions were made in development of the game.
However, it is one of my favorites and in my opinion rivals Elden Ring in how beautiful it is.

    Few important pointers for DS2
    1. Rolls and i-frames are connected to the stat ADP or adaptability. U need it high to play freely while dodging, atleast 25. So, focus on reaching it fast along with other stats. Lvling up in DS2 is very fast though
    2. U need estus shards to increase number of estus charges. Do look out for them. Hint: try hitting the stone on the well in Majula near the small pigs
    3. Use lifegems smartly. U will get to buy them infinitely eventually but until then use sparingly as initially they are main way to heal until u get enough estus shards
    4. In DS2, with each death u lose some of ur max HP so if u die too much, u will basically play with half HP as u were doing. The way to get full max HP is using human effigy. U don't need to burn them, just use like humanities. They are farmable but rare so carefully use them for now.
There are more but these should help u for now. Also, take it slow as each place has many hidden areas and loots, also many enemies.
One more tip: u can use exploding barrels (darker barrels) to open secret areas/shortcuts, use them well. Also, each merchant can give u gifts after u buy enough from them so do talk to them once u spend around 10k souls. U might find surprises 👍🏻 keep it up

Quick thing I’ve been thinking about for years but haven’t seen discussion on. I get the vibe that the ladies at the start of the game are supposed to represent the Three Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos) in Greek Mythology. It’s a stretch, but from the opening cinematic of her spinning the thread made me think that she’s supposed to represent Clotho (or Lachesis?) who spins the thread of life. Together, the three fates decide, well the fate of an individual. Not sure if it’s the events that they will undergo or if it’s strictly the amount of lifetime they have. Apparently, it’s seen to depict the cycle of life: birth, life, and death (Lachesis: dispensing the thread is starting the life, Clotho: spinning the thread gives the lifetime, and Atropos: cutting the thread shows where the life ends). Anyway I just thought it’s like they’re deciding your fate lmao, which makes sense sorta. I just thought it was a cool thing I wondered about (cuz I never wonder about things lol).

Power-stance is a new game mechanic in Dark Souls 2. The power stance is when you wield two of the same class weapon, like two maces, or two greatswords, or two curved swords. In power-stance, the 'L1' button will swing both weapons in 1 attack. You need to meet the dex requirement, and have 1.5X the strength requirement of the highest requirement weapon to enter power-stance. You HOLD the 'triangle' button to enter power stance. You TAP 'triangle' to toggle one-handing or two-handing a weapon, but you HOLD the 'triangle' button to toggle power-stance.
The easiest way to test power-stance to get a feel for it, is to use low requirement weapons like daggers. When you enter power-st ance, your character's resting animation will change.

Congrats on your new pc Mati!
This game is rough especially early on so i just want to give some tips that will help you on your journey:
-Every time you die your health bar is reduced a bit, to a max of 50% (yeah, this is rough). Human effigies recover your health bar to full, as well turn you human. They are very valuable, my advice would be to keep going with 50% hp until you know where to go or the mechanics of the boss before using them.
-Level up Adaptability! As this stat increases the i-frames of your rolls, as well as faster animations for drinking estus (!), using items and other things. It is the best stat in the game and you should increase it as soon as possible. You can stop when you feel confortable using estus in combat.
-Buy Lifegems, a lot of them. You can carry a max of 99, they are used much faster than estus and they allow you to move. They are better than Estus!, at least early game.
Hope this helps, good luck man.

Awesome, I can't wait for the series.
To answer your story question (non-spoiler): yes a long time since ds1, fire is fading yet again like the caretaker said.
ADP is vital. It upgrades the AGL Stat, which increases animation speed and I-frames. 99 AGL is good, and 105 is optimal. So shoot for 99, and then focus on your build until considerably later, then go for 105. Ds2 introduces respec to the series, so you can change your stats around at the cost of a soul vessel with one of the firekeepers in things betwixt.
Powerstancing from elden ring originates here. You can powerstance by dual-wielding two of a similar weapon type, and having 150% of dex and str required for the weapons. Hold the weapon swap button to activate and your character will change their stance. Then you can use both weapons at once with the block and parry buttons. Higher dps at the cost of stamina consumption. You can also just dual wield normally, instead of the shitty dual wield in dark souls 1.
Illusory walls are opened with the action button.
Some questlines are progressed by summoning NPCs. However, you'll still get to see an ending for the quests if you do not summon. So since you don't wanna summon, it's a win-win.
Use effigies to restore your lost health (humanity) anywhere, like a rune arc. Basically humanity, except you can be invaded while hollow. You can burn an effigy at a bonfire to prevent player invasions and summoning, but invasions are fun anyways :)
From now on in the games, healing works like elden ring. You upgrade your flask amounts and power by finding key items. Hint: there is one more shard in majula, not too far from where you found the first one. Also, you can move while drinking estus, just not as much as with lifegems.
What the fuck? Those enemies can parry you? As you saw, backstabs and parries work a little different in ds2. Backstabs are mostly the same, they just have cooler animations. When you parry something you gotta wait until they sit on their ass to riposte.
And lastly, this game feels like a soulsborne in every way... because it is. I'm not sure what whoever was telling you otherwise was smoking. Have fun!

Wow. I’ve never really seen anything like this on youtube tbh. Vod length episodes, but edited really tightly the whole way through. And with non of the constant chat interactions that make twitch vods feel really irrelevant, nor the distractions that make them super low quality. There’s no streaming overlay, or low res video either. Genuine props for trying and executing something pretty original in a space that’s fairly oversaturated with playthroughs. I used to watch so many DS2 playthroughs a some time ago, but I can see myself watching this one too, because of the cool format and perfect amount of editing

PS: I'm sure others have mentioned this to you already, but Human Effigies will help with your health. They're much more important in that regard in DS2 than Humanity was in DS1.

Hey Mati! Just one pertinent tip for ya, since you've got an interest in dual-wielding. DS2 has a system called Power Stance, which allows you to do combo attacks with both equipped weapons at the same time. There's some limitations and requirements that you can look up, but the important thing is this: *hold Triangle/Y with both weapons out.*
If your character shifts his grip on both weapons when you do, congrats! You have the right stats and weapons to Power Stance. Until you switch weapons or deactivate the stance, you can now do combo attacks with your left shoulder buttons. Have fun, and good luck!

Watch out for environmental stuff, as an example, there's a shortcut to the bonfire where that merchant was, gotta make use of the firebomb enemies and barrels.
That big silver dude, get used to him, he's an easy parry.
Pate gives you your soapstone I'm sure, there's a few other bits to explore in the zone.
There's a well in majula, poke around there, you also wanna spend money at maughlin throughout the game.
Also check out the cliffs as you exit the things betwixt/majula cave.
Victor's stone is the hard mode covenant.
    Also some doors are breakable

22:25 that nest is the trading vendor. You leave items in the nest and they'll replace it with a different item.
There are dedicated items for this, one of which you could've had as a starting gift (petrified something).
Smooth and silky stones are the other
Edit: They are also in ds1 but they're easy to miss if you don't know what to look for

Good work on that boss. Strongly recommend a bow and arrow throughout this game. Helps with luring to avoid the gank fights. Also poison arrows reeeeaaallly come in clutch. Exhaust the merchant's dialogue in Cardinal Tower. Trust me....
    Have fun!

  • @ZoeBateman
    @ZoeBateman Рік тому

Ok so quick Dark Souls 2 tips; lifegems are slow (but over time) healing that stacks with itself, and there's a merchant you can get infinite of them from (Malentia, straight forward when you warp to Majula). They're especially good if you get poisoned, as it basically counteracts it via healing. You also now need Estus shards to upgrade your estus flask's amount of uses, and sublime bone dust to increase how much it heals. Rolling i-frames are now tied to a stat, ADP (it also speeds up item usage, like your estus flask!). Equip load only changes roll distance, the lower it is (in terms of %) the further you go.
Weapon and armor durability is a lot more important and degrades much faster than in DS1, but it refreshes fully at a bonfire unless something is fully broken. You can repair at the blacksmith's.
When you die, you become hollow, and lose some max HP. You can restore your full life bar by using a human effigy, that also makes you not look like a zombie.
Glad you like Majula! Even if some people might not like DS2 overall, it's still widely regarded as one of the best soulsborne hub areas. This whole game feels so warm, and Majula is such a nice resting area to upgrade and stock up on supplies (make sure to check back with Maughlin the Armorer, once you spend a certain amount he starts getting new, special stuff). Also, check out the well in majula. Not the big pit, but the well near those lil pigs.

I think this game its the best of all souls series because it focus on the narrative. People rarely mention Aldia when they play the series, and at the same time they keep trying to unravel the lore of these games. Aldia is, as the DLC says, the "scholar of the first sin". So he was put there to elucidate what the first sin is and what the curse is about.
