What a lovely party! I could relate to the "real plates" idea. Last summer I hosted a party for 20+ ladies, and looked for ages for just the right paper plates with coordinating napkins - knowing all the time that they may not hold up since we weren't eating at a table. Then I stumbled upon plain white plates at the Dollar Tree. I bought two dozen of them for less than I would have spent on paper, and will be able to use them during any season for years. I found some cute napkins and it was perfect!

I get wanting to have something healthier than cake but why not some kind of dessert made with frozen berries - homemade froyo maybe? A frozen mixed bag of berries is like half the price of fresh.
Claire Rousseau i think it depends where you live and what season it is. where I live most of the year frozen is cheaper but when berries come into season fresh are significantly cheaper.
