  • This is a short and sweet video showing the initial steps to training a puppy or a new adult dog to come when called. You can see my latest puppy Epic learning in her first lesson how to come when called. This video goes over how to initially condition the recall. I will then create another video on how to create reliability to the recall. But there is already a couple videos I have created for proofing the recall which you can find here: Starring Wish • Dog Training Recall Ga... Starring Halo • FUN RECALL GAME - pupp... Starring a German Shepherd Puppy Bear • COME when called with ... This tutorial can be used to train dogs of any age or breed to come when called. The key is making sure you have treats that are high enough value that your dog finds reinforcing. If the dog has low interest or no interest in the treat, then the training will not be effective. Here is a video about what treats to use: • What treats to use and... If your dog is not motivated by food here is a video that goes over that: • Dog not motivated by food

    I appreciate that you were able to emphasize the critical moment of when to say 'come'. It's easy for a novice, like me, to not notice the nuance of how the timing effects the process.

    She is absolutely so cute! And chihuahuas are not my breed of choice. I know you want her to keep '4 on the floor' but she is adorable walking on her hind legs. I'm sure she will turn into a lovely, well behaved little lady.

      Im not concerned about tiny dogs putting paws up, but she does it so much it cant be good for her growing body. When I first got her she literally wanted to walk and hop on just her back legs when I had food out.

    Dear Emily, I adore your videos!
    I know you must have thousands of ideas for videos, but I would be incredibly grateful to see a video about how to *prevent* separation anxiety even for short periods of time, since I work from home, but obviously still need to go grocery shopping and have other appointments occasionally. I don't have a dog yet, but I want to prepare as thoroughly as I can!
    My heart would not be able to take it, having to "let them cry it out" but I know that picking them up and giving them attention might also result in unwanted behaviour, so I don't really know how to approach this and I only trust your advice, because I know that you are experienced and will ALWAYS want what's best for the dog.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      I will be making a video on the topic with this little one, but basically you cant reinforce an emotion. So all you have to do is teach the dog to feel contented and relaxed when left a lone, then they dont cry or panic. THe idea of ignoring crying doesnt address the issue that the dog is not feeling good. The way I train is building alone time to be reinforcing. i already hae this video though ua-cam.com/video/HWT9DI7hMfo/v-deo.html

    Cuteness overload ! Epic's enthusiasm is infectious. I do a similar thing where I throw the treat away instead of placing it (treat chase games) which creates excitement. I like your method as it's calmer. I used to do the "triangle method" which is basically what you are doing here but moving from one marker of the triangle to the next. Great stuff as always.
    Looking forward to the next stage.
    I'd love a video on reward schedules for recall. I always offer some kind of reward without fail, but only for recall, everything else is on intermittent or self rewarding. I've been hesitant to pollute my recall by messing with the schedule (which may have been a mistake in itself).

    • @kikopup

      Well you can always use access to the environment. Thats a good idea. I actually was thinking I should make another recall video for people with mobility issues, so that they dont have to try to outrun their dog...

    Wonderful and incredibly educational. Even as an experienced trainer, I still always take something away from your videos. So thank you! I do have a question for you; what are your thoughts on group classes of 4-6 puppers?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +2

      It depends on the management of the class it could be amazing and a night mare. Also that everyone knows what is best for their puppy as they live with them. So if you are at a class and you feel in your gut something is wrong, speak up or leave, etc... Always trust your gut.

    Hi there! Thanks for sharing these videos 😊 I’m wondering when I should use my puppy’s name versus the come command. Do you have any insight?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  2 роки тому +1

      It depends if you say the name for other things. For me the name means pay attention, im going to ask for something, its helpful if you have multiple dog because you can say Epic, Sit, and just ask the one dog to, but if Epic is recall then its hard to differentiate between the dogs. But if you have 1 dog its not such a big deal unless family members keep saying the dogs name all the time.

    Thank you so much for your video training series. We have a new young lab mix from a shelter. We have only had her for 5 days so far. We have several cats and were told that she did well with cats. She is possessive of us and doesn't like the cats "interrupting" HER time with the human. That has gotten better thank goodness, but we have trouble calming her down. I watch your calm/settle video and your attention noise video and I think that these will be very helpful in helping this sweet girl adjust. I do have one question: you keep saying "mark", but being new to training, I am not sure I know what you mean. Thanks

  • @freshmojito

    Very helpful, thank you! I've also watched the video on how to teach a puppy his name, but I haven't yet figured out how to differentiate between "name" and "come".
    My puppy comes the second I say his name, which isn't a bad thing I guess. However, in the future I'd like to add other comands after his name, like sit from afar, without him coming over. Have I maybe missed a video on this?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      you really dont need to use your dogs name unless you are using cues for other dogs really. Its easier to teach in a group ua-cam.com/video/46iuiZU2chc/v-deo.html yes at first the dog will respond like the recall

    • @kikopup

      A lot tend to be barky, you can work on it of course, but most likely it will be an issue you work on with a chihuahua :) She already has barked at things and is just 9 weeks. So I imagine she will bark at anything "novel" as she grows into an adult and I can help her with learning not to get so startled.

    Would it be difficult to put captions in Spanish to your primary basics videos for puppies and shelter dogs? I live in Mexico with the largest street dog population and lack of training resources in many places. I would love to share your videos. Might there be some fairly easy way to do that? Even when I moved to sweden my little dogs would want to go in the snow outside even when I did try to provide the litter box in their later life. I am litter box training my own puppy at the moment because at night I get scared as the owls live in the tree above my yard.
