  • The "come when called" command stands out as a cornerstone in dog training, vital for ensuring both safety and effective control. I categorize this command into three distinct variations:
    1) The Formal Recall: A precise command where dogs are taught to approach and sit directly in front of their trainer, awaiting further instruction. This version is vital for scenarios demanding strict obedience.
    2) The Informal Recall: A more relaxed version, it signals the dog to come closer without necessarily assuming a specific position, perfect for casual moments of call-back.
    3) Whistle, Tone, or Vibrate Recall: Tailored for off-leash situations, these unique signals call the dog back, especially when ambient noise might drown out a verbal command.
Remember, the essence of these training commands goes beyond mere obedience; it's about nurturing a bond and trust between the dog and the owner.

Good lord my man. You break it down so perfectly. The practicing WITHOUT a dog is just some level ingenuity. Simple techniques with consistent discipline.

I think the Come When Called command is is the foundation for all obedience and agility work because it solidifies that engagement which is so necessary. Now that Storm is starting competitions I watch your videos often before practice sessions. Super helpful info that’s easy to understand and very effective! 💪🏼🐺

Excellent instructions. I never knew that we can teach the dog to go away from us & do recall too in one exercise. Thanks.

Such a great video Nate. You always make concepts make so much sense. Just wanna say that my dog is able to do off leash work consistently now because I created a better marker word with her and did more name response. She has an informal recall of come near me or walk near me, a recall which means come sit in front of me and wait until released, and four different heel recalls (left heel, middle heel, right heel, and a middle heel reversed which we call guard). It is so many different types of recall but it helps her know exactly what we are asking from her and it has made her off leash control and recall precision go thru the roof. Thanks for that.

Wow, it was actually helpful training instead of just showing off without an explanation. Thank you, this was very helpful. I've been wasting my time with other channels.

Thanks for the handy trainer tips. Circle the cone from distance looks like a useful game to add to our backyard training.

It is also a fun way to have your dog work and be controlled in new environments. My family’s dog has an around command and she uses it near daily in our training sessions and on walks. It is such a fun thing to teach.

I really benefited from getting to see this in dogs with less of a foundation. I enjoy seeing the behavior performed on one of your trained dogs but it's a lot harder to apply because you aren't faced with the little mistakes and misunderstandings and the differences in each individual dog. So we don't get as much information on how to work out the kinks. This was great.

When I adopted Maxine, a 14 m/o completely untrained Malinois, the very first thing I taught her was a verbal and whistle recall, it's one of the cornerstones of dog training.

Hey Nate! Absolutely love all of your videos but I was wondering if you could possibly do some sort of intro video for training with an e-collar. Ordered the Mini Educator from Amazon but would love some insight integrating with your training. Thanks!

How would you teach a deaf dog the around and recall? I have a two year old rescue Labrador mix, that is deaf and I 'm looking for a reliable way to recall her. Sit and down are no big problems, stay works more often than not but could be a lot more reliable.

Isn’t it sound demotivating for dog to be in position when called. I think dog will get demotivated if he has to leave the direction, come back and sit in front of handler & after this long pattern he will get reward.
    What do you think ?
Please correct me if am going wrong.

He has lots of videos on it. All the training really starts with luring. We lure them into all the positions then give it a name.

    • @MartaIreneSeguinotTorres

Dogs will work also according to the motivation the owner has, don't expect excitement and motivation/knowing what to do from the dog if the owner is not excited and motivated to do and to do the extra mile for it. In addition you should use a more motivated luring, not the same thing you use for food, it's like having the same type of ice cream flavor over and over. Lastly, consistency, the dog needs to see all done same pace of excitement and motivation. ❤🐕‍🦺

Come when called! My dog thinks it is come if you feel like it. Just kidding.
