    I have been mulling over something for days-- something Emily said. She said "I never tell my dogs they are wrong." Wow, think about that. Really think. She assumes ALL responsibility for the success of the training, does not put it on the dog at all. If the dog is not getting it, it is Emily who breaks it into smaller steps until successfully achieved. The dog is never wrong. This has really gone deep for me. Thanks, Emily. Sometimes a truth comes through so strongly and for you it is just a quick comment and on to the next thing. Well done. (Heart)

    I almost died of cuteness at several points in this video. It is endlessly fascinating to me how tiny puppies of small breeds are.
    In other news, I think I finally found a trainer that doesn't use intimidation! I had my first appointment with her today and I really liked her way of thinking.

    Thank you! I've been studying your videos for the past 6 months to prepare for my puppy (which I'll be getting in 5 days)! This video is so refreshing in the fact that it puts everything together and it's a very realistic approach :) Thank you for providing all the resources needed to get started :) I wish you and your dogs well :) I'm not a paying member, but I hope to be one day. Just want to let you know that I appreciate all the work you do :)

    Emily, I‘ve been following your work since around 2011 and still love every single video. Epic is totally adorable and I‘m super excited to see such a little dog getting raised and trained so well. I‘m sure it will surprise a lot of people that think that you can’t do anything regarding training with such a small dog. ❤️

      ARG I am still in the process of making that one :) :) :) Because she was so easy I dont think the issue was so much genetic and just that shed had a bad experience being left before I got her. It started with her screaming if I even was in the shower and she could still see me. thats why I was so worried when I initially got her.

    Emily your pups are the cutest! Me and my wife owe a ton to you! We are doing really good with our puppy cavalier, the only thing that has us with doubts is if it’s normal for the puppy to only cry in the crate when they see us getting their food and if it’s ok to play tug games if they don’t know drop it or start growling lightly.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      yes the crying is normal- you could take the puppy out as you prepare it, or give little treast for watching it be prepared. Growling is fine for tugging, some dogs do growl when they want to guard the tug but you would experience more forceful tugging and stiff posture wide eyes with dilated pupils and then if you let go the dog would look as if guarding the toy. Its cool to play tug if the dog doesnt know drop. One thing you can do is have two tug toys, play with one let go and then wiggle the other and move it away from the dog so the dog lets go to grab the new one.

    2:44 so cute. Looking forward to the separation anxiety video. Just for learning experience. My first dog came from a shelter with separation anxiety and we never were able to help her with it (14 years!), we just avoided having her be alone. On my fifth rescue dog now and none of them has had separation anxiety, but I spend a lot of time conditioning them to relax on their own. Hopefully one day I can help a dog with separation anxiety become confident and comfortable.

    Epic is so adorable.
    I kind of want a tiny dog at some point in my life, but it also seems so scary to have to worry about all these things. For now, I'll stick with my 30-50lb dogs.
    I'm also really glad that I decided to train my younger dog to use a pee pad when she was a puppy. We don't usually leave pads out for her anymore, since letting her outside is usually a better option. Sometimes though, it can be a life saver. There is so much dumb advice telling people that dogs should only go outside, but it has been so handy for us.
    She was recently sick and had diarrhea, and thanks to the pee pad training, I was able to give her a place to go when she couldn't hold it, and avoid having her diarrhea on our carpet while we were asleep at night, or when we needed to leave her alone for a bit. (Yes, obviously we took her to the vet and she's fine now.) Those few days would have been a nightmare without her pad training.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      Yes, My eldest BC Splash had a bladder infection and I put a bunch of pads by the door before going to sleep in case she didnt wake me up. Now the problem has resolved and I dont have a ruined carpet :) I have to say its hard with different sized dogs. The smart thing would be to get all dogs the same size- easier on walks and when they play etc. There is a lot more management going on, I dont let my little dogs run with the big dogs when they are excited or distracted, sure they can be loose in a big space when everyone is calm but if the bigger ones are playing fetch or running after each other and dont see a little dog walk in front of them it cou;d cause severe injury. I trained my little dogs to wait on a bed while I do crazy stuff with the bigger dogs... Sometimes I dream of having dogs all the same size, but i get lured by little dogs because I do love them sooo soo much :)

    What a great video! it's especialy cool to see that people are watching your videos BEFORE they even get their dog!
    You really are the best trainer I've seen online and I've been recommending you to everyone I know for ten years. Once, I even traveled to see Turid Rugaas - simply because you recommended her. But there are so many trainers out there that the recommendations often get lost in the shuffle. There isn't a rating system, like yelp or imdb, so sadly, marketing techniques often count more than professional integrity.
    I had three min-pin chihuahuas (now down to one :( ) and I was opposed to pee-pads because I thought it was tampering with the dogs' natural instinct to keep their indoor environment clean. But living rural (coyotes, bears, bobcats - or even raccoons and skunks), it would have been a good idea. I have the opportunity to regret it at least three times a day, watching a 16-year-old with arthritis try to find a place to go in freezing temperatures and wet snow...
    On a more difficult topic, have you made any videos where you give your thoughts on euthanasia? I put one dog down at 12 (she couldn't breathe, and I couldn't get adequate medical care for her), I had one die a 'natural' death three months ago, which was agony. And if the local vet had her way, the remaining little dog would have been put down two years ago, even though she still gets wildly enthusiastic about treats and her favorite people. I don't want her to suffer needlessly, but I also can't see killing her as an acceptable medical treatment for the pain and discomfort of aging.
    I'd really like to know if you'd be wiling to share your thoughts on the subject?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, pee pads can be handy, but I trained my little dogs so well to want to go outside that after years of not using pee pads, they refused to go on them mid winter in sweden, they preferred to go in the snow, I had to retrain them to go on the pads during fire work season there, because everytime we went in the street some kid would set of fire works. Regarding euthanasia. I really think if you have a strong beautiful relationship with your dog, only you will know what is best for your dog.

    Hi. Love this video!
    I just rescued a 2-year-old toy poodle. And he’s very very good and calm inside the house but outside..hgmm...he gets over excited and barks and screams at everything! Cars, dogs, people, kids, squirrels. Do you have any advice on what should I work on with him?
    He walks really good on leash and doesn’t pull at all, but then when he reacts he loses it. I tried to work on settle but he starts barking at everything that moves over 100 feet away. I’d appreciate any advice! (He’s not reactive I think he’s over excited)

    I saw in a separate video you said that you would not use treats in training for 5 days when you get your first puppy aside from capturing calmness - is that correct or do you start training with treats right away

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      That was for a specific issue of the dog barking and whining when the treats were around. Meaning that if you tried to train anything the puppy would whine and bark while doing the new behaviors if that makes sense.

He’s also small and not fully vaccinated, so I do not want to take him outside fir the exercise. Anyone in the community have any tips or know which video touches on this challenge?

    Re: super tiny
    Did you have to change anything else in the house? I imagine that doors would be a concern for me for example. I'd also be freaked out about accidentally stepping on my tiny dog, I'm such a klutz. Would you teach her to avoid your feet for example? I even taught that to my (much bigger) dogs, since ..well, I'm a klutz and dogs tend to be around and "get in the way".

    • @kikopup

      I do have Kiko a 5 pound dog so it wasnt much of a change. When Kiko went almost blind for a few months it was very new and tricky for me but just as we got into routine she regained vision! (she had an eye ulcer that the doctor didnt think she would recover vision after)

  • @sebastian.d.s

    Off topic..How can I change and eliminate negative conditioning. I have a 6 years old female brittany and I use mostly positive training, but for her barking at noises and strangers in some situation and for her interest in wild game I also used intimidation. I hadn't had the knowledge to do it differently and now it's hard to change her behavior because she expects bad things in those situations.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому +1

      dogmantics.com/solving-barking-at-noises/ You could also teach her a new cue to mean "leave it" something youve not used before and then train it this way ua-cam.com/video/6jYfKK17ZBs/v-deo.html then use it in the situations you want her to leave whatever it is alone. And dont beat yourself up too much, often dogs have the negative experience because they are worried about the noise or stranger so it could be that reason she acts worried.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 роки тому

      The real essential is building the dogs interest in listening to you (the attention game), and focusing on the 1-2 problems you see are essential for your puppy to work on. For me the issues were 1- separation training and 2- making sure the 5 dogs and 1 puppy didn't get off to a bad start would could potentially cause injury with such a small dog.
