    At one point, the word “come” had become over-used and lost meaning. (Terrier!!!). I was playing hide and go seek one day and placed doggo in a sit/stay command in backyard. Then went to front yard and hid behind shrubs. “Pssst” was the release word and this game was so VERY fun for my Westies that the sound “Pssst” became my new weapon for instant recall. The bonus was that it is also such a polite sound that doesn’t clue in others. It was awesome for camping and visiting because only my dogs were clued in.

    Because it is so difficult to get the other people in the household to be really consistent with COME and not using it when they shouldn't, I'm thinking it might be more realistic to use COME as the informal recall and use something like NOW as my formal recall.

      My older wait for “listen” because ive allowed them to make the choice if the stay outside in fenced yard or come in. Maybe i should try “home?” instead of come because sometimes i add “i mean it!” Clap clap clap. “Now!” “Hey!” ….adding walking out to her and ….. plus i have 6 dogs…..having other people mess with the training by accident is a drag….you wouldnt want me

      I usually whistle for the really important recall, you of course have to be able to whistle it so it sounds relatively alike everytime and know that you can whistle even when you are stressed. Otherwise you can buy a recall whistle (or sheepdog whistle if you know how to use those) that you always have with you and make sure no one else in the household wears out.

    Personally I like to use the dog's name as a "look at me and await instruction" command, not a recall. This helps in many situations, such as when you have multiple dogs in a pack, you can speak to individual dogs by using their name followed by a command and the other dogs understand you aren't talking to them. Or when your dog is far away and you want them to stay at a distance but pay close attention to you.

      I say touch so that she touches my hand. Down the road this is awesome because then you can just put out your hand and your dog will run to boop it. I have a very soft voice so hand commands are essential at dog parks.
      My German shepherd picked it up instantly. My Aussie is doing well. As long as she’s not distracted along the way. But she usually remembers why she was coming to me and finishes well.

    Being of Inuit Culture, I have an adult Alaskan Malamute (Mahalamut), he is six years old. We inuits have a specific way of training this particular breed. Now!.. I have invested in a rescue puppy. She is Dane/Lab. A completely 360 degree circle than training a Mal'! Anyhow, your channel is by every mean assisting me in doing my research in order to bring "Ellie", Dane/ Lab to become an excellent friend. I do apply some of my own training as I have done with my Mal. And by the way? "Ellie" is bilingual, as she understands my inuit language. Thanks guys.

      My dog who usually has decent recall got out of his harness on a walk(It just randomly came unclipped) and he ran to a dog that was in heat. He is fixed but he would not listen to me if my life depended on it. The dog he ran to did not react well and neither did the owner, it was a lowkey dog fight but the owner stepped it up about 100 points by yelling at me as if I was the worst person in the world for letting that happen. I was so scared for my dog and I blame myself for not having a stronger recall. Brushing up on his recall now.

    I don't remember ever training my dogs to know their name. Very interesting video. Maybe now when I get a new puppy, training will be easier. Thanks. For come I use the French so he doesn't get confused if I say come by mistake. I speak French but rarely use it unless French friends are around. I live in montreal. It might be good to train your dog using another language, just for the avoidance of confusion.

      I do this too! My 16 week Sheltie is learning words in 3 languages, English, French and Spanish. I just use whichever one feels most natural to me , for example I always use ',’allez’ for lets go, and ven aquí for come, and ici for here, and lots of other short commands. Then my husband says other things in French because he is French. I thought the different languages would be confusing but after watching this video I can see that different words should be used for different situations and the dog doesn’t care which language it is in!🤣'

Teach in a controlled environment then work yourself towards more energetic areas and use higher value treats for the recall. So instead of kibble use a hotdog (example) also use dinner time for training time. I'm no expert so keep doing your research

    My sister trained our older dog to respond to "leave it" as a kind of formal recall, like when she's chasing people on the street or barking at cars. I'm attempting to train our puppy to respond to "c'mere" as an informal recall. Our older dog doesn't respond to informal recall very well, so I want to try and make sure the puppy doesn't do the same. I was planning on using her name to get her attention, "c'mere" for informal recall, and "leave it" for formal recall. Would that work?

    What do you do with a puppy that bites your fingers EVERY time you give them a treat. We end up having to drop the treat on the floor instead of letting him take it from our fingers. This ends up with him distracted looking for the treat on the floor. He’s been with us three weeks, he’s 12 weeks old now, and still bites our fingers, despite what we have tried to do to prevent the biting. His teeth are sharp, and his bite is getting worse (more painful) as he grows stronger.

    my staffy knows the name game. he'll respond when he knows he's getting something out of it, but in real life circumstances he doesn't care to listen at all. his focus is non existent, so any time i take him into public and people or other dogs are near, he loses his mind. i took him to puppy classes and i literally had to leave the building and have a separate session with the trainer because this dog will pull and pull to the point where he chokes himself and his eyes are bloodshot. i can't call his name to redirect, because he only responds with food, and when others are around food does not matter to him. i can't redirect with a toy during training because then he gets riled up and is even less focused on me and more focused on the toy in my hand. i can't even take him away from the distraction, because he'll find something else to fixate on. it drives me nuts and i'm losing hope.

      I have two pups with very different demeanors- I watch McCann training for the more “normal” engaged pup and their methods are spot on for puppy #1. Pup#2 is a different story, completely different mind set and much less engaged, very easily distracted, and has extreme puppy brain. For #2, I watch Upstate Canine Academy videos. Not to take anything away from either training method, as both work perfectly for my polar opposite dogs,
      I feel like I am learning 2 great methods and also gaining knowledge of a sort a hybrid of both that I can draw on. I live rurally and don’t have access to in person training, so both methods have been invaluable and so much appreciated by me and my dogs.

    So what happens when you would like your pup to simply attend to you and wait for a cue when you say his name? For instance your puppy is on the other side of a busy street...calling his name could be disastrous if he considers it a recall cue.

    • @LBofLB
      @LBofLB 2 роки тому

      Agreed, that is a good question. Going off of what Linda said, maybe the "look at me" command, then the "sit" or "stay" command. I also use hand signals for the important commands, so that may be valuable to be able to do both when they look at you, especially, if it's noisy.

    • @aidenberzins
      @aidenberzins 3 роки тому

      I would definitely recommend some jackets and little booties for sure.
      The other option would be litter box training.
      I would also ditch their food bowl and use it for training. With their tummies being so small the number of treats you can use in a day is limited.
      Make being outside a fun time but also being aware small dogs, especially Chihuahuas, can't keep heat as well as those with longer coats.

      My boxer used to take a long time until the first snow. Ha hated the cold. For the other 12 years he lived he was always a straight-to-business guy.
      If you can teach a dog to signal, and run to the door when it's time it'lloften be a short event. The downside is if you're slow to get shoes on they can go by the door. At least when they're older. For the last eight months we had to go to a schedule.

Every dog that you see in obstacle courses are a Beadiant's courses , they look German Shepherd's and a few other breeds. These are the same breed as they used to make these videos with. they never use small Hyper dogs. Small hyper dogs jump and think you're playing every time you bend over to either give them directions or give them treats. I would like to see how to overcome this problem

      I don't see why people are always commenting this. Yes, there are dogs that aren't as eager to please their owners as collies or shepherds. The same strategies still apply though, you just might need some more patience. And that's something that a video can't teach you anyway.
