Perfectionism is deadly. I wonder how many teachers end up quitting because in their eagerness to please they set expectations for themselves that are unrealistically high.
I agree. That’s why I’ve made this, to highlight that mistakes will be made and that there is nothing at all wrong with that. Too many educators strive to be consistently outstanding, when really they should be consistently ‘good’ , and taking care of themselves. So many teachers burn out thanks to high pressures 😓 where do you teach? Thank you for sharing your opinion here! I agree with you about the expectations of teachers.
For Teachers Thanks for the reply. I am currently considering a career change to teaching and have been trying to get a feel for the expected workload. In my own personal life I have been guilty of being too perfectionist, but fortunately from my career already I am now aware of the principle that there is a law of diminishing returns whereby greater and greater effort will yield lesser and lesser effect. It’s about finding that sweet spot which is “just enough” and no more. Kudos to you and your videos, you seem like a really nice person with your heart in the right place.

I certainly agree with all your points. One in particular is the “Not embracing real word events”. When I was a student in secondary school, at the start of COVID-19, my school completely stopped anyone from talking about it. Becuase no one would stop talking about COVID-19. After about a week of students not understanding and following the guidelines and social distancing rules, they allowed students to discuss it. In fact, lessons became nothing else. This allow for everyone to understand what they need to do and follow to keep safe. It also meant that students could “vent” their feelings about the situation. It was all over the news and was infecting the UK by then, so it had to be talked about. So in summary, it is better to ditch your lesson plan if something big has happened or will be happening in the world. You can always come back to that lesson plan later on in a different lesson. Good thing with primary is that you’re always with the same kids. So maybe try to get a different lesson finished quicker to implement a portion of the lesson plan you couldn’t do.

It’s so good to hear that we don’t need to always be perfect and outstanding and rigid when we are teachers. Right now I’ve been feeling quite overwhelmed with everything that teachers college is telling me I need to be.
your tip about trying to not feel pressured to use the same techniques as other teachers meant SO much to hear! I am about to take the spot of a teacher half way through the year... she has been teaching all grades art since the kids were in kindergarten... So i feel a lot of pressure to have to replicate her since they have known her so long.. we are friends, and i love how she teaches but our personalities are very different. I had this stunning realization that every teacher i ever had as a kid did things in a way that was best for them, and their personality, and their students. there was no need to do it all the same way!
I definitely think it gets easier! That first year is crazy. I remember mine being so tough. Stay positive as much as you’re able and keep your own work life balance in check! X
Katie, you are obviously someone who would be a terrific mentor for young teachers. Your passion is infectious and you have learned your lessons well. We share a few key points: 1) Be a friendly teacher but never a friend. The children have enough friends in the playground - they need you to be a friendly adult in loco parentis. 2) Be yourself, everyone else is taken (Oscar Wilde) or "Teach as you can and not as you cannot." (Me) Teaching styles are like business suits - tailor made always look and feel better than off-the-peg. 3) Yes, by all means DO focus on world events but be strict with yourself. Perhaps take five minutes at the beginning of class to link the world event to your teaching, but if we drift too far away then we aren't teaching the curriculum. If the world event matches the aims and objectives of the lesson perfectly then by all means take longer. Sorry for this small and maybe petty comment - the use of "really really" and "very very" is a verbal tic that we all need to eliminate from our lessons. Many teachers I know forbid the use of like and kindalike in their classrooms - it is really really time to call time on the use of double/triple adjectives/adverbs. When I taught in America I managed to stop my students describing everything from a donut to Niagara Falls as 'awesome' and I think I made them sound more articulate. Other than that. Terrific job as opposed to very very good. Thank you for this master class and best wishes.

I’m going in to primary school teaching via. the Teach First graduate scheme, I am very excited and extremely passionate about the charity. I can’t wait for my first year in the classroom but it is daunting because the nature of the programme means we receive 5 weeks of training before commencing our teaching and study for our PGDE at the same time. Your videos have really helped me to understand what it means to be a teacher, and I already feel better prepared. Currently in my first full-time year-long class job - I am guilty of not thinking I am doing enough and comparing myself to others who have been teaching the stage, at the school and overall MUCH LONGER than me. There is always more you can do but striking a balance of doing your best at work and also looking after yourself is incredibly important. Also, your best changes every day :)

For Teachers Thanks, I didn't see it. Is it normal to feel unmotivated at times at this stage in my pgce? I'm studying at a uni in central london (dont wanna disclose so publically haha). I'll try my best to overcome this because it's mostly mental.
For Teachers I just submitted a 2500 word essay. it was SO hard and I genuinely was at a point where I couldn't write more than 600 words lol but I did it and im proud of myself.😊❤️ it's actually fun haha. we had a whole day training yesterday learning how to teach p.e 😜

I’m sure it’s normal to feel this way. I remember feeling exactly the same! You’ll find a rhythm with it soon. I do believe planning starts to get easier as your knowledge of the curriculum grows. Try not to burn out! X

Hey can you do a video on teaching year 5 and any tips on it ? I’ve just completed my NQT yr in year 6 and am teaching yr 5 in sept but am worried the teaching will be different to yr 6 and I’ll receive less support! Thanks ! Xxx
I have exactly the same conclusion about laminating. When I was a TA I was asked to laminate literally everything and in the end some of these resources have never been used even once... So unless it's sth I know I will be using on a daily basis (flashcards with colours, with numbers etc...) I do not laminate anymore. Also, this year we have organised one room for our resources and we can share them with all teachers which is cool because once I prepare resources for a certain book from our library, somebody else can use it as well in te future :) Save a lot of time when you can just go to the basement and look for autumn flashcards or story cards for a book :)
I think this is so important. I also think there are a lot of teachers who glorify laminating eg ‘I was up until midnight laminating these cards, my mum had to help me, the kids better enjoy this lesson!’ Etc and make it seem like such a chore. It simply isn’t required for a successful lesson. I love the idea of your resource room, I bet this is helping teachers a lot. KS1 or KS2? X
I subscribed and liked with notifications on👍🏻. I’m a year 9 student and I want to be a teacher when I get older! I’m also from the uk 🇬🇧! I learned so much from this! I honestly like all my teachers they are really nice and I feel comfortable working and learning in their classes😇! Also, what is your policy for kids who need the toilet during class and when do you as teachers get to go to the toilet? I got 2 teachers who allow toilet breaks we have to sign out and in! Other classes my teachers ask us to hold it until break. I like to use the toilet during lunch and recess which is so convenient🚽! I stay hydrated so sometimes I may need a toilet break in them 2 classes occasionally while never abusing it! I always try to hold it until break but sometimes I can’t wait that’s when I ask maybe twice a week. The other classes I don’t drink much water so I can wait until the next break. Mam today I made a mistake in copy correction. I teach maths. There was a division sum the answer should be 603 as quotient but the child has written 63 and missed 0 . It was my mistake I saw the statement for that word problem and sent a correction mark ✔️✔️ and the parent called me and scolded me for that mistake that they give full fees of school and still this type of mistakes are done by teachers and because of this mistake the childs future can get destroyed and told me that he should complain to my principal about this. I apologized sincerely for my mistake and he said it's fine. But I am feeling extremely guilty and scared about this. I am in my first year of teaching. Please mam suggest me what I can do about this...
Thank you for the feedback! The curriculum is called The National Curriculum. It has changed a little bit recently, but is still similar to the curriculum I taught 6 years ago. I am guessing you teach in Scotland? What curriculum do you teach there?

Absolutely. My current teaching partner is from South Africa (we teach an English class together, it’s really great!) I’m doing my pgce atm, is it normal for me to have to make my own powerpoints and resources for each class? It seems a lot of work, my department doesn’t share resources :/
Some schools share more than others. You might find your NQT year is different. Sometimes year groups will split the planning so one teacher is in charge of maths, English etc. The experience you’re having right now might not represent other schools. Is it quite a small school? My A levels were English, Graphic Design, Media Studies. As far as I know you just need to get the required points, although I took my A levels 10 years ago so it may have changed a lot since then. You need to pass the QTS tests in order to do your teacher training. What are you considering for your options?
I think this video ignores many of the challenges of the first year and discusses it in the space of a competent veteran. I am into my 2nd year and the thing about the first year is that it is unlikely you have acquired the fluent competency to plan out every minute of your 'perfect' observed lesson. I did okay, but your description of planning and planning to get it perfect was not what I could have done even had I wanted to....There are just so many 'firsts' you are getting up to speed on simultaneously

I stay hydrated so sometimes I may need a toilet break in them 2 classes occasionally while never abusing it! I always try to hold it until break but sometimes I can’t wait that’s when I ask maybe twice a week. The other classes I don’t drink much water so I can wait until the next break. Mam today I made a mistake in copy correction. I teach maths. There was a division sum the answer should be 603 as quotient but the child has written 63 and missed 0 . It was my mistake I saw the statement for that word problem and sent a correction mark ✔️✔️ and the parent called me and scolded me for that mistake that they give full fees of school and still this type of mistakes are done by teachers and because of this mistake the childs future can get destroyed and told me that he should complain to my principal about this. I apologized sincerely for my mistake and he said it's fine. But I am feeling extremely guilty and scared about this. I am in my first year of teaching.

Thank you for the feedback! The curriculum is called The National Curriculum. It has changed a little bit recently, but is still similar to the curriculum I taught 6 years ago. I am guessing you teach in Scotland? What curriculum do you teach there?

Absolutely. My current teaching partner is from South Africa (we teach an English class together, it’s really great!) I’ve also had the pleasure of working alongside plenty of other South African teachers in both my current job and job before it. I’m doing my pgce atm, is it normal for me to have to make my own powerpoints and resources for each class? It seems a lot of work, my department doesn’t share resources :/
Some schools share more than others. You might find your NQT year is different. Sometimes year groups will split the planning so one teacher is in charge of maths, English etc. The experience you’re having right now might not represent other schools. Is it quite a small school? Good luck with everything and let me know if I can help in any way. I’ve mentored PGCE students in the past and I know how tough it can be! X
Hey! I had a question, does it matter what A levels you do if you want to become a primary teacher?
My A levels were English, Graphic Design, Media Studies. As far as I know you just need to get the required points, although I took my A levels 10 years ago so it may have changed a lot since then. You need to pass the QTS tests in order to do your teacher training. What are you considering for your options?

I think this video ignores many of the challenges of the first year and discusses it in the space of a competent veteran. I am into my 2nd year and the thing about the first year is that it is unlikely you have acquired the fluent competency to plan out every minute of your 'perfect' observed lesson. I did okay, but your description of planning and planning to get it perfect was not what I could have done even had I wanted to....There are just so many 'firsts' you are getting up to speed on simultaneously
