Seeing a game like this run on a handheld just makes me appreciate games like Killzone Mercenary on Vita more. When you put projects in the hands of capable people you can get amazing results.
Killzone Mercenary even to this day looks a lot better than it has any right to. It's amazing what they able to squeeze out of the hardware. Because you have to consider how the Vita is a lot more comparable to the PS2/OG Xbox in processing power than it is to a PS3.
Mercenary is still absolutely absurd. Not only did it best so many console games graphically but especially gameplay wise. Still one of the best multiplayer FPS there is.
It's really the lighting that is so impressive. It's why Crysis 3 looks like a PS4 generation game and will still look great for a PS5 game too when the remaster is released.
@@NonsensicalSpudz I just hated how blurry it was. It actually plays shockingly well for a sub 30 fps game. They really nailed the controls. Can't wait to see what 60 is like on ps5
Honestly, Crysis 3 looks like a beautiful modern game, to this day. It was incredible that it was able to run on the PS3 and X360 (albiet barely). But at the same time I have to hand it to the Saber team in Sweden. Having a state of the art high-end 2013 game run on a down-clocked 5-15W mobile chipset from 2015 is just crazy. I can't tell if this is back handed compliment to the Switch or not, but it cracks me up when people have to always cite the year the Tegra X1 was revealed. It would be like year dropping PS5 and Series S/X are 2019 chipsets when complimenting them (in 2023)
i like the decision to take the previous gen version and enhance the resolution and antialiasing for switch, rather than bring the pc version down. good decision, and the image quality definitely looks better for it.
@@Dev-nr4dw to be fair, doom Eternal is a much more modern game. This game was on ps3. But still, overall I do find this game better looking on switch than doom Eternal, yes. I'm just saying it's hard to compare as the ports come from two very different starting points.
Will love to see a Crysis 3 comparison between the Switch and the Steam Deck in December. How they compare in Image quality and framerate. As well as controls. Will be interesting. Props to Crytech for optimizing this game just like ID / Bethesda with the Doom series
Its not just a bump of resolution/IQ but better textures, grass, shadows, reflections, AO and an almost perfect frame rate (compared to the 24 fps average if PS360). They did such an amazing work.
It's insane how amazing this looks on the Switch and is vastly improved from the 360/PS3. Saber Interactive and Crytek must be doing some impressive optimization to make the most out of the Switch or doing some kind of magic!
@@hyrulelink16 I would like to know what you mean. Everything I read (up until 2019-2020) mentioned that the Cell processor was “a far stronger processor than modern Intel CPUs.” Respawn claimed “Intel core 9-9900k not as powerful as PS3 Cell Processor.” The processor was just very hard to program for. Technically as low as a $200 tablet if you buy a Switch lite! Crazy how a dinky little $200 handheld with an underclocked 2015 chipset is performing better in games than a full-blown console that cost $599 at launch (PS3)! Technology improves so fast these days it's practically blinding.
Pretty amazing switch port. Didn't seem like it was dipping that far below 900P, and all those big open scenes looked like they were rendering everything, didn't see any lower detail in the distance. All that grass was fully rendered, all while staying at a constant 30.
the fact that they even got this to work on a switch is an incredible achievement. No other developer has any excuse to not hit good frame rates on consoles ever again
This is really impressive! We've had so many Switch ports that barely hold up to their last-gen (PS3/360) versions, but this seems like a noticeable step up. Looks noticeably better, and runs way better!
Also i saw that the game has way less aliasing in switch compered to the ps3. In xbox one and ps4 this game will have even better settings than the switch version. And better fps if this game can have max settings on ps4 and 60 fps i will be very impressed.
I wish the other Crysis games had kept that story up with the alien invasion properly. But the designs got changed (along with a lackluster explanation as to why), and the original designs were genuinely interesting, creepy and ... well ... "Alien". They didn't stand on legs. They more resembled squid, but that's besides my point: the reveal of the aliens in the mountain in Crysis 1, and the interior exploration in zero gravity, when we get into their base, is some of the coolest shit I've ever seen in video games, period. And I've seen a lot. To have that all thrown into the bin and have it replaced with generic "baddies" was such a disappointment, that I stopped halfway through Crysis 2.
All my respect for all the teams working in Crysis, I don't know how they do it or the way they have managed to work things inside the company but they always nailed it. my first Crysis was 2 and they did a wonderful job for the 360. and the AI for the soldiers you could feel that they actually helped you if you let them I was amazed. Yeah, there were a lot of bugs but still, I was so inside the game that sometimes I wouldn't even notice them, just wanted to keep going. wonderful job as always and the action is just...wow
I think it shows how good Nintendo's API tools are for getting the most out of the GPU and CPU. 1Ghz and only 3 cores for gameplay is super impressive.

The bow and arrow represent the icing on the cake of Crysis 3. I like to use it so much in combats that I only leave them at the end of the game against Alpha Ceph !!! I wish for a stealthier Shadow of The Tomb Raider style next Crysis with more jungles!!! In my opinion Crysis 3 is one of the most beautiful and interesting games of all time.👍👍👍👍
When I see things like this, I can't but pray we'll see Red Dead Redemption on Switch on day. It's totally capable of running it better than the PS3 did, it would be bonkers !
i was shocked to see such a high-fidelity game running and looking so great on switch, but i didn't know that it was mainly due to the original version being on the absolute bleeding edge at the time. i thought the sequels were cut back severely to accommodate the restraints of the 360 and ps3
Damn Im so excited to get both of these! It’s kinda weird to see so many of these games from 2 generations age take a huge sh*t on what the Switch is getting exclusively. Either way, Crysis Trilogy on a portable. Colour me happy.
@@kiaelinkx Sorry for my less-than-optimal analogies.. I mean Crysis 3 somehow manages to look a ton better than almost anything that gets put out on Switch today. It's weird how the devs were able to make such good use of limited hardware resources back then. Meanwhile Pokemon Arceus gets shown few days back and people argue that the Switch can't handle anything more than that.. The game looks like some janky asset flip barf, where nothing fits together as it should. Yet we see so many gorgeous open worlds on the console from this gen and the last one which make Arceus look laughable in comparison. All I'm saying is, making great looking games is and always has been up to the talent of the devs. I think the x360 and PS3 generation saw so much innovation and tech pioneering, and Crysis 3 is a testament to that.
Seeing what developers are achieving with the current switch hardware makes me wish even more for a more higher powered switch even if it means slightly less portability from some extra thickness and width in hand
As someone who grew up when handheld versus home console gaming was GameBoy Advance versus PlayStation 2 it's really phenomenal that I can now play Crysis on the train or sitting in the coffee shop. The Switch is really delivering as a portable platform, I love it.
I played all 3 Crysis titles on the PS3 and back than I was just happy playing these games. It didn't bother me that the performance wasn't great, but I also didn't have a PC to compare it to.
Honestly I hope Crysis gets a proper comeback eventually, seeing it get ported to all kinds of systems is super cool but I really hope these are all selling well so EA finally has an excuse to get a developer onto making a new one. I always felt the series never really lived up to its potential so I wish one day it finally can.
Also, this is further reaffirming my belief that TAA is one of the best techniques to come out of the last console generation. Uncharted 4 was the first game to really make me a believer. I remember comparing the amount of shimmering and aliasing against some games running native 4k on my PC and being amazed that Uncharted 4 actually had less of both despite being 1/4th the resolution
@@Loundsify It really is. It also made me realize how important lighting and effects can be. The quality of the lighting just brought the atmosphere to another level. I still feel like it's one of the absolute best looking games ever and only recently has been eclipsed by stuff like Demon's Souls, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition (best lighting in any game atm), Death Stranding, and of course, the Last of Us Part II
Now THIS is magic. Pure magic. Imagine they'd be able to use DLSS on the Switch. That'd be such a boost to everything. But knowing Nintendo that will probably never happen. Even if there'd be a Switch PRO at one point, it won't go in any of that direction. Which is a shame.
All these comparisons make me do is appreciate what developers were able to do with the PS3/360. Less than 512MB of usable memory total among other things and we got games like this, Killzone, Last of Us, etc..

Just imagine what a small increase to the Switch's hardware will bring if they can run Crysis 3 like that on the current hardware. Once again excellent video from DF.
4:08 There's still the option on pc to use the nvidia txaa with a more aggressive temporal component and ingame msaa + sparse grid supersampling (via enhancing with nvinspector - which absolutely tanks performance obviously).
I'm confused why people go so over the top with AA combinations etc, does it really look that much better? especially at 4k most games I think I could play without any whatsoever.
7:20 HOLD IT! Really bad spot to show the Switch's "much better shadows". Look there! You can see the shadows of the trees above on the PS3, but on the Switch it becomes blobs of shadows. Really strange downgrade there.
Yes, the resolution of the shadows is lower but their filtering is better at a distance. In that specific scene It seems they have entirely switched out the leaves that are casting those shadows. Maybe transparency of textures is no longer considered for shadows? But that would be really obvious in many places. It's really strange that DF didn't pick up on that when reviewing and editing their footage.
I think the main factor bewteen the swicth and the last gen is without question Ram availability. Could be the reason why the switch version has better texture and doesn't have to buffer so frequently compared to the PS3/360 version..
The fact that a low power mobile processor can run a game this demanding, this well is honestly astounding. Mad props to the guys over at sabre interactive! @@theanimerapper6351 John and Rich explicitly say that the Switch's Tegra CPU is weaker than the PS3's CELL. Probably not this Switch version for me, but I'm glad it's seeing new life.
I never really noticed the frame drops on ps3 until me and a few friends decided to place c4 all over the map and detonate it in multiplayer damn near crashed the game
The Nintendo switch truly does have the most amazing port jobs to hybrid hanheld device I've ever seen, you see how cool a platform can be when developers optimise and really get down to the nitty gritty.
I still have all 3 games installed on my pc. Crysis 3 is one of the best looking games i've ever played. And it runs incredibly smooth. This is not a combination that every game can achieve. Crysis are the games that made me fall in love with Crytek and the Cryengine. They need to make a comeback.
Damn, Saber might actually pull off that Kingdom Come Deliverance on Switch...somehow. Maybe. It is still a huge difference with fully open world game devoid of loading screens with detailed AI behaviour trees routines, compared to level based shooter. In any case, I wish them luck.
They'd have to work their magic doing alot of CPU optimizations, the game has serious CPU bottlenecks, especially in the main crowded city with lots of NPC's walking around.
Yes... Alex and John make regular pilgrimages to Crytek offices 🤣. That being said... These games have no business running on Switch, but folks programming down to the metal can make miracles happen!
I wouldn't say "no business", they came out on PS3/360 and the Switch is more powerful than those. These versions definitely seem a good step up from those though.
The people saying Switch is more powerful don't understand PS3 and Xbox 360 didn't have access to TAA and DRS. Never mind the fact that grass actually pops in more more often on Switch and seems to draw in farther on PS3. Sure the grass seems thicker and fuller on Switch... because the grass blades are actually about 2x thicker than on PS3 and Xbox 360. That walking scene John showed off shows large patches of tall grass popping in on Switch but those patches were already visible on PS3 much further out. The engine seems to be more aggressively culling geometry for Switch in areas were more varied object LoDs are visible. This makes sense given the geometry buffer is a weak point in mobile GPUs and that is a problem on Switch too as evidenced by other games ported from last generation to Switch including RE4 and L.A. Noire. PS3 and Xbox 360 are likely still computationally more capable than Switch and we know even back then PS3 was more capable than Xbox 360 and yet PS3 runs Crysis 3 worse than Xbox 360 while Xbox 360 never had games that looked as good as Uncharted 3 or Killzone 3 or even Gran Turismo 5. So what's the deal??? The knowledge gap. The reason Crysis 3 looks better on Switch could be simply because PS3 and Xbox 360 can't leverage the tools derived from the knowledge gained over the past 8 years of development on limited hardware but ultimately Switch is running the PS3/X360 era game at a higher resolution with better AA and less visual effects that has been re-optimized to run better on PS3/X360 era hardware.
You clinically focused on some grass details not understanding that resolution here Is consistently higher, framerate is in a different league (constant 30fps versus 20 to 25fps on PS3 and constant sub-30 on X360), texture are better, shadows are better, ambient occlusione is better. Switch Is a more powerful and way more modern architecture and this game is another example... But It seems that It does not matter how 99% of portings to Switch are a big jump in almost every aspect, you and people like you always insist in finding awkward ways to say the contrary.
@@MrMorotep Not just grass, but overall LoD as well as shadow quality and some textures also look worse on Switch (which is completely unexpected). So no I'm focused on the fact that the Nintendo Switch despite _being more powerful than PS3_ isn't pushing better visuals. The resolution is higher which is expected because the Switch has higher fillrate than PS3/Xbox 360 and the image is cleaner due to using a better AA solution (which is also much cheaper to implement than SMAA which PS3/Xbox 360 use). So Switch isn't showing that it's more powerful than PS3 or the weaker Xbox 360. Yes, I know this game runs better on Xbox than PS3 at a higher resolution too, but that doesn't change the fact that PS3 is a more powerful machine that Crytek didn't know how to really hone performance for.
Fantastic. Instabuy 2 and 3. With the upcoming DII resurrecetd, we would also love to see Mass Effect Trilogy and Dragon Age I and II on our beloved switch...
Seeing this, I can only say that Panic Button has been dethroned. This looks so much crisper than any DOOM or Wolfenstein on the Switch. Impecable job.
@@futurelarking Maybe Eternal but not sure about DOOM 2016. Much smaller maps and CPU load is minimal compared to Crysis 3. Also, this is basically a PS4 gen game, they just needed to squeeze some cash from the consoles that were on the market at the time. I bet some Crytek devs wanted this to be a PS4 only title.
@@denisruskin348 Doom 2016 was actually more demanding than Eternal. There's a whole video about it, but basically the engine 2016 runs on is older, and was not built to be as scalable as the one Eternal uses. If you compare framerate between them, you'll notice framerate drops in the Switch version of 2016, but Eternal holds a completely solid framerate throughout. It has something to do with a thing called Megatexture, which was carried over from older versions of the IDTech engine, but puts more strain on newer systems that can use more detailed texture work.
I think i remember back then when i switched from playing GTA SA on ps2 to GTA4 xbox 360 the difference in speed was NOTICEABLE it wasn't until later in life I knew that game was pretty much just had a lot things going for it 1-framerate made it feel slower 2-physics made it feel heavier in movement so a lot of things changed between ps360 and ps2/gb/xbox gen
I remember that I got it for the PS3 back in the day and I was really shocked by it's lack of proper AA and by it's terrible framerate so I sold it very soon afterwords. The Switch port is impressive.
13:48 The limit was indeed the GPU, as a GPU overclock has been shown to improve the framerate. I also really wonder what would have the WiiU port looked and performed like. It would seem like the WiiU was less GPU limited than the 360 and PS3, being mostly CPU limited.
It's not like any other developer on the planet has produced a better looking and performing game for Switch. The Switch is not a particularly powerful piece of hardware.
This 'underpowered' hybrid-console can, objectively, still pull off beautiful graphics. But apart from the graphics-update, this is still a very old game. It's a last-last-gen-game. So assets are still the same, which DO show its age. For Switch-gamers that have missed this game, I would recommend it, cause it's also a very descent shooter to have on Switch, so if you are looking for another descent shooter next to the Metro-games on Switch, I would recommend it. If you have played this game on PS3/Xbox 360 before, I would not recommend it on Switch.
@@PursuedByAMemory Uh... that bit about a better GPU and more modern CPU architecture is wrong or simply not the limiting factor. Yes, Switch has more RAM overall and more RAM available to games but that doesn't make games look better when the GPU is less able to push the same level of geometry as PS3 (which had the weakest GPU of the "HD twins" meaning we're obviously excluding the Nintendo Wii and the Wii U). The Tegra X1 (including that inside Switch) has more limited capacity to draw triangles and quads which is the basis of all objects in games. The less restricted RAM allows for better textures and the higher fill-rate of mobile GPUs including Tegra X1 allows for better textures and higher resolution output buffers (higher native resolutions). Don't believe me? Well take another look at this video particularly the long walking bits comparing PS3 and Switch where PS3 is actually drawing in more foliage at a higher LoD while Switch's grass pops-in. This is contrary to John's own assessment claiming falsely that Switch draws in more grass when you clearly see the grass blades are thicker on Switch, but no more or less numerous in the specific comparison shot in which John mentioned the better grass rendering on Switch. Switch has a better pixel fill rate... which is why the game runs at a higher resolution but some of that fill-rate is consumed by rendering better textures than the PS3 version and to support that they developers relied on DRS and TAA to help keep up performance. Switch appears to lack particle shadows (which eat up more in the way of geometry and processing power) as well as having a more well optimized geometry culling process which also seems to respect what the player might be seeing nearer the center of the screen leaving LoDs to pop-in at the periphery when they're much closer to the viewport (which makes sense and produces more fleshed out visuals at the center of the screen sacrificing detail at the edges more than on PS3/X360). So there are nips and tucks that were deployed to make this game run better on Switch and if you care about the flourishes more than the image quality and performance you can easily see the Switch port is actually using slightly lower overall graphical quality settings than the PS3/X360 original in many small ways that ultimately don't impact the overall appearance of the game much.
Yeah it was impressive they got it running on the Vita...what blew my mind more is how poor the framerate was. It's a shame, it could have been a killer app for the Vita.
The real bottlenecks on the PS3 and Xbox 360 were the 512 MB of RAM. Only 256 MB of system ram on PS3 while 256 MB reserved for the GPU. While X360 had dynamic ram allocation.
@@Bramagon It's shadows from transparent textures that they simplified or outright removed. For grass they simplified it a little but also turned ON shadows on more of the grass so it often looks better until you look up close (nearby, on the ground or the gun). For trees they simplified it drastically which is a big downgrade. And clouds they just removed outright! Huge downgrade.
What's up at 0:48? Look at the rear sight while the character is walking down the staircase. Its shaking rapidly and almost makes it look like motion blur but it's not, it seems like some kind of animation bug or something.

That's true, it was known from the start that NS is slightly more powerful than PS3/X360, but it's still impressive to see a game like Crysis 3 run this fluidly on a handheld device. Would have been much better if Switch got similarly looking games soon after its lunch.
People are always quick to tell you how weak the Switch is but in the right hands it's still really impressive how much you can get out of a 10W console.
I thought Switch could hit 15W? Either way it's at least 3 times more power-hungry than the PS Vita and people still crapped on that handheld console when 3DS was it's competition. Back then people were swearing by "quality not quantity" when the 3DS had more games of much lower quality. Then the argument reversed when Wii U was released to little fanfare but even so most games weren't running as well on Wii U compared to PS3/X360. Only NFS:MW (2011) produced favorable results else wise Wii U lacked quality games as well as had fewer games to choose from. Switch is last gen still and many Nintendo fans still claim it is "9th gen" because it launched after Wii U, but Wii U was a stopgap console. Regardless the game itself is very old and only now with all the knowledge gained from newer technologies does Switch benefit from this while PS4 and XBO will still get a game running at far higher resolutions with much greater performance and no compromises to visual quality compared to the previous generation of consoles (PS3/X360) and to add insult to injury you can still play these versions on the go on either PS4 or Xbox One thanks to cloud-based streaming.
@@VariantAEC ME3 on Wii U also ran well tbh. And how did 3DS have less quality games? The only big name titles on Vita were Killzone, Gravity Rush, Persona 4 Golden and......?????? I'm not saying 3DS didn't have quality games, but most were Mario titles and DKCR3D. It's unfortunate PS Vita didn't get more high quality and beefy 3D titles, but I can't think of many on 3DS. I also own a 3D and have basically all the Nintendo staples including SM3DL, TLoZ:OoT, MK7, NSMB2, SMM and the previously mentioned DKCR3D.

What a time to be alive. Getting all those full blown titles on a handheld. Excellent.
Yes... Alex and John make regular pilgrimages to Crytek offices 🤣. That being said... These games have no business running on Switch, but folks programming down to the metal can make miracles happen!
Welp, Crysis 1-3 was on the 360 and ps3, and the switch has more power in every aspect
@@MrMorotep
Not just grass, but overall LoD as well as shadow quality and some textures also look worse on Switch (which is completely unexpected).
I mean DOOM and Wolfenstein are both current gen games unlike Crysis 3 which is a PS3/360 era game - so no surprise they're more demanding.
Well, they're different generations of games, this would certainly be easier to port than Doom 🤔
@@futurelarking Maybe Eternal but not sure about DOOM 2016. Much smaller maps and CPU load is minimal compared to Crysis 3. Doom an Wolfenstein was ps4 port ...crisis is ps3 port big difference
Crazy that a weak handheld system is capable of running Crysis 3 better than the original console hardware it ran on!
That just goes to show that "weak" is subjective, because context matters.
Switch has more RAM, a better GPU, a more modern CPU architecture and most important of all, upto date software development practices.
@@PursuedByAMemory
Uh... that bit about a better GPU and more modern CPU architecture is wrong or simply not the limiting factor.
@@VariantAEC This is all great knowledge, thanks for sharing!
Switch is less powerful than most smartphones but here i am playing candy crush and ad simulator on the appstore😢
I remember when my mind was blown from playing Borderlands on PS Vita. My brain refuses to even recognise this as real
Just wait until the Steam Deck comes out
@@bearpuns5910 You missed his point. The point is that both consoles are underpowered, therefore playing such games on them is impressive
7:13 are you really gonna tell me the switch looks better here? Its like completely gotten rid of all of the fine shadow detail lol
I also noticed the lack of cloud shadows on switch on outside scenes. Think they simplified the shadows for better cpu perf.
Its shaking rapidly and almost makes it look like motion blur but it's not, it seems like some kind of animation bug or something.
i played crysis 3 on a CRT on 360. its some time ago but i can remember the game targeting 60 fps. the whole game was super smooth. 1 day my parents were not at home so i moved to the living room playing and of course i wanted to try crysis 3 on the HDTV. the framerate was absolutley garbo.
you mean the console version of Crysis 3 adjusted resolution based on what monitor is plugged in?? never heard of that before.
@@forasago not only Crysis 3. All games on consoles do that. CRT TV got 480i or 576i so consoles stuck in this settings when you connect console with Composite cable and games runs in this resolutions. Its a lot less than stock 720p or 1080p. Even on PS3 when you use HDMI you can set 480p or 576p only in XMB and games will get better pefrormance than in native 720p but they will looks worse. You dont know that lol?
@7:14 you can see the individual leaves on the ground shadows in the ps3, the switch version it's just a black blob.
I mean if it ran on xbox 360 then it's no surprise it runs on switch
I remember playing it on PS3, you could tell it was pushing the hardware right to the limit. Switch should be able to cope a bit better (I hope)
That's true, it was known from the start that NS is slightly more powerful than PS3/X360, but it's still impressive to see a game like Crysis 3 run this fluidly on a handheld device. Would have been much better if Switch got similarly looking games soon after its lunch.
@@mikeuk666 That's not unreasonable. The switch is more powerful than a 360.
Saber does some very good quality switch ports
People are always quick to tell you how weak the Switch is but in the right hands it's still really impressive how much you can get out of a 10W console.
This ignorance isn't gonna stop, because people are either dumb or have no clue what they're talking about.... Or both.
Meanwhile Pokemon alone carried the 3DS, and that's not even counting a massive RPG backing.
And let's be honest: No one's adding insult to injury here. You can cheer for cloud gaming as much as you like, fact remains most people won't and don't use it. The Switch hasn't sold 90 mil units for nothing.
@@JackFrost-1856
I wouldn't call Pokémon quality just an insanely popular franchise.
PS Vita also had Tearaway, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Freedom Wars and many others as well as far better versions of multi-platform games like Ridge Racer, Minecraft, Rayman: Origins and Rayman: Legends to name a few.
I don't have DS or 3DS Pokémon games though I do have Pokémon Yellow via the Virtual Console.
My only question is: How can such a big game fit onto a little card? How can any game fit into a card? LOL.
Well, there are 1TB USB sticks now, so i am not surprised
Considering Crysis 3 was able to run on ps3 and 360, I would consider those more of a technical marvel than on a Switch which is as good if not better than the gen 7 systems in just handheld mode. I suppose just remastering the console version will provide at least way better performance and resolution.
Digital foundry, I know that you won't really consider an idea for a video proposed by someone from the comments, but I am willing to try anyway. Please make a video of tech review on crysis 3 and battlefield 3. They were beasts in an era where pc-based games were developed.
You know what. I'm with you on this. Those videos would be pretty dope. Crysis 3 is like the best looking game that is getting a remaster.
