Magician Lord is an interesting run and gun platformer, one I'd tried longplaying before, but got bitten by just how tough it can be.
Unlike similar games where you enhance your offensive abilities by collecting weapons, Magician Lord completely changes your character. Each form has its own strengths and weaknesses, run speed and jump height, and these are a constant for as long as you remain in that form.
Starting out in your default "Magician" form, you can transform by collecting coloured orbs, which are generally found inside treasure chests secreted throughout each level. Two orbs can be held at any one time and the combination of colours determines which form and abilities you currently possess. Collecting a pair of red orbs will turn you into a fire-breathing dragon, while two yellow orbs will bestow upon you the power of Raijin, a hero infused with the power of lightning.
Which form and abilities you use throughout the game are entirely at your own discretion, although they are most certainly not all equal. The Samurai and Water Man forms are really too weak or too niche to clear much of the game's content, particularly in later levels where the number and strength of enemies increase dramatically. Being honest, with Dragon and Raijin forms being so strong, there really is little point choosing anything else.
It's this last point where I feel Magician Lord falls down somewhat. Some of the forms are pretty useless and place the player at a distinct disadvantage for using them. Maybe this was intentional, but it would have been a better experience if the different forms had been balanced better.
Magician Lord is a pretty cool experience, albeit one with flaws that may sour something that is, generally, a solid game.

The Game that introduced me to the Neo-Geo and the game that changed my life forever AL82. I was a 7 year old boy in 1990 at a local Dairy Queen in Paramus, NJ just happen to be there for Sunday lunch with the family. This large truck comes by rolling out a red looking arcade cabinet from their unit with much interest from all the people around it.
I ask the store manager what it was. He said, "it's called Neo-Geo. You can play multiple games on it instead of just one". Now as a boy, I was fascinated on just the technology and how you can insert cartridges in these units. And the first game in it was Magician Lord.
I must've spent close to $10 Dollars in quarters just trying to make it half way. It was an experience I'll never forget. Since then, i was a buff of the Neo-Geo since. Thank you for sharing this with us AL82.
And a special thank you for taking my request. It made my day for sure. 8^)
Anthony..
0:40 This segment says loud and clear "More on-screen colors than anyone else"
Modern players might not realize it, but back in the days this was technically waaaaay above everyting else.
At least compared to the "other" home systems of the time.
Compared to what was possible hardware-wise in 1990...not so much. 🤔
I would still prefer to own this system but I am only able to afford a PS5. I wish they would do a full blown classic console version with an ROM store. I would gladly pay for the ROMs but it has to be FPGA.
Clearly you've just discovered the NeoGeo so you're projecting your emotions as objective reality.
This was technically waaaaaaayy behind everything else at the time. Anyone who was around at the time will never mention any NeoGeo game as being technically ahead of ANYTHNG in the arcade. Ahead of home consoles, obviously yes, but SNK games were always technically piss poor compared to Konami, Sega, and Capcom arcade.
This is 1990. By this time we had Space Harrier, (5 years earlier!) Outrun, TMNT, Captain Commando, and the technical effects in Magician Lord look awful. Just like Sengoku and Mutation Nation where they just stretch sprites.
@@markg5480 Sorry for the time you lost into this answer, but I was talking about home console. And, for my emotions, I owned a NG and that game at home back in the days, so I could easily compare it to my other consoles.
I envied the rich kids that had the home system back in the day.
Brutal game. Instantly established the Neo Geo as the monster console it was.
A friend of mine managed to get one already during summer 1990 with Magician Lord and Ninja Combat. I was utterly shocked by the visuals and sonics. Best memories.
I’ll get you already
I remember my brother playing this in the arcades back in the day, looked brutally hard. Strangely enough playing on emulator, it didn't seem unreasonably hard. Except for the post-hit invincibility mechanic, much too brief. I might also have the benefit of YT playthroughs now.
I've literally just played this 5 minutes ago and here it is soon as I click on youtube, never got to play a neo geo as a kid so I'm so grateful for emulators 😁
I've owned this game for the Neo Geo, since 1995, it came with my used system as well as Top Player Golf. This is the game you showed off if you actually could afford the home console. Crossed Swords was another essential title and the sequel is even better.
Whoa, after so many years, I finally figured out what the name of this game is. I could never even get past the first level back with this was new in the arcade. What a trip seeing the whole playthrough. It's like Magic Sword with flourishes of Ghouls & Ghosts and Super Metroid.
This is pure art. It belongs in a museum. I mean louvre style, not just retro temple in someone's backyard.
Hi AL82,
Judging from your playlist for October of 2022, Magician Lord was the most viewed video from you during the month. So glad that it is and thank you once anew for accepting my request. Loving forward on seeing your November lineup of titles to be enjoyed for sure bro. 8^)
Anthony..
When I saw this in the arcades as a kid, it was like holy shit. Those graphics are insane.
This was one of the first games I saw in the Neo-Geo cabinet. Along with Cyber-Lip, Ninja Combat, and Nam 76. Played the hell out of it at the local comic book shop back in the '90s. Good memories. :)
Thank you as always AL82. And a special thank you for allowing me to share this wonderful video up on the Neo-Geo thread on the forums over on the site on AtariAge for others to enjoy and be amazed by your gaming skills bro. 8^)
Anthony..
The amount of savestates it must have been needed to play it like this justifies the invention of savestates.
he used save state and edit to looks like no damge??
Always awesome to watch someone no death this absolutely BRUTAL classic. Nice job👍
ahhh the quotes in this game I remember being hilarious xD... "what imprudence you human being! Face your trial by god..." or "I am destined just to die" and "you persistent guy... but your life ends right now!" had me aching at the sides with the line delivery lol.
Come on Nice Guy! But Your life is mine very soon! :P
"I am destined just to die" might be the best thing ever uttered by a boss.
Ah, yes. The Evil Mine where they mine evil.
From a game in the early 90s, Magician Lord has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard 👏👏👏
Alpha Denshi/ADK musicians were very talented
Gameplay is awesome, but the villain has the lamest taunts ever.
"I am destined just to die!"
The music of this game is still my favorite.
And thanks for using my two favorite forms mostly - the flame breathing dragon and the electric android-like form!
I really wish SNK made more games like this. Although at the time, I just really couldn't be bothered to memorize all the hazards and maps that resulted in tons of cheap quarter-munching unavoidable hits.
They were going to make a sequel for the neo geo cd, but then transferred to the neo geo pocket but that ended up getting canceled. Such a shame, it would’ve been dope
@@MingodoughGolly! Really?! 😯
I didn't know about that
What a shame, and ADK/Alpha Denshi (the creators of Magician Lord) no longer exist 😔
SNK now owns ADK's franchises
You absolutely destroyed this game and made it look like a breeze. One of my favourite Neo Geo games but a difficult one at best so I hardly play it. Was satisfying to see the end. Thank you for sharing. Liked and subscribed!
10:42 - oh, no, the "anderground passage of terror!!" - this game really wins the cake for the most random janglish in a while :D
Engrish. lol
Thanks for posting this. Played this growing up but never got past 2nd level - so damn frustrating. Now I get to see a play through beyond lvl 2
Big SNK fan.. never saw this game but the soundtrack! My goodness!
It is actually made by ADK not SNK
They had a very close relationship since the early 90s
ADK no longer exists, now SNK owns their IPs (World Heroes, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Twinkle Star Sprites, etc)
But yeah, the music of ADK games is amazing!
Great game. Thanks for posting. Never got past those pesky frogs IIRC.
One of ADK/Alpha Denshi most memorable games.
ADK also made the World Heroes series, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Twinkle Star Sprites, Ninja Commando, Ninja Combat, Ninja Master's (Yeah, ADK REALLY LOVED NINJAS 😂), etc.
One thing I really like about ADK games, is the music.
ADK were masters with the drums 🎵🥁🥁🥁
Magician Lord was one of the few games I saw in the arcades that actually utilized a memory card. Then again, being in the States, I was never able to get a memory card of my own.
thanks for the great play😌🙏
Kind sir,
I have another fun Neo-Geo game request if you like to participate once again. The game is called, "Top Players Golf". It happens to be my favorite Golf title in the genre of Sports. This one holes a special section in my life that I'll be glad to share a story to you and the rest of your members & guests that stop by to visit your channel.
I always love the part of the course selection where you view a lovely background of a pond with ducks floating by with a peaceful tune to go with it. Great addition and just about all the games like that as well. 8^)
Anthony..
AWESOME PLAYTHROUGH AL82 !!!
proved what a beast the Neo was/is. The colour, sound everything just screams quality. Not the best Neo game but amazing nonetheless.
Magician Lord Longplay (Neo Geo) [QHD]
I wonder how much they had to pay George Michael to get him in this game.
You sir, have amazing skills.
An early introduction to NEO•GEO goodness.
Had one of these. So advanced for the time. Massive console and cartridges.
Wow wow wow what a wonderful playing it s just fantastic this player is a pro
Magician lord, loved it
Love the level design, reminds me to contra last stage (Alien 👽 Themes) 🤔.
You discovered a memory
perfect run by heart... TOO ELITE... was hardest game for me forever... that looks SO EASY.. perfect MOVES, perfect KNOWLEDGE, etc..... etc.. etc... i imagine 99 coins to re-try :) ... CONGRATULATIONS.
Collecting the eight books
whoooo respect !!!
This influenced me😃👍.
Esse jogo de plataforma está me lembrando Super Ghouls N' Ghosts.
Totally Terrific thank you kindly! 😉👍
Good playthrough of Magician Lord Al. What was your strategy to get through the game?
Followed a couple of guides regarding best characters to use - I swapped between Raijin and Dragon just to add some variety to the video; both forms are powerful 🙂
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Thank you, it's cool to all of what these games have to offer.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Awesome longplay as usual, although it wouldn't kill you to use a crt shader every once in a while, especially the older consoles and arcade systems relied on the crt tech nuances for some gfx effects, like star twinkling or water transparency.
I know not using filters is kind of an unspoken rule among play video creators, but it's kind of a very old rule set by tas videos originally if I'm not mistaken, back when there were no decent shaders actual tube emulation.
Anyway, thank you.
Love this game - still looks great / holds up. Pet peeve of mine with longplays, though: when the player skips certain powerups and items. The goal of a longplay should be to exhibit everything a game can do. I want to see the other powers of the magcian lord!
Anderground passage
Very good run, you human being.
super
"schoked" 😮😮😮😮
nice..
Back in the day was this a game that needed actual coins? Cause I'm playing on an emulator and I've died so many times I'd have needed to sell my house to reach the end irl
Frogs = nightmares
It's look like a ninja
Why does the villain sound like Garfield?
Play store ?
3:13 you could have bypassed that entire room by jumping to that ledge above and headed for the exit, the Shinobi and Raiden are the only 2 characters that can jump that high. Also, you may have gotten one of the secrets in the wall while falling down the shaft in stage 2, but you missed the other one. Still, quite a feat to beat the 2nd boss with Raiden, even fully powered it's not easy
Judging by how the basic enemies takes more than one hit to kill, I'd say the difficulty is close to 8, but to play with only 2 blue health is a very gutsy move, especially since you had several close calls throughout the game
Clearly you know where you're going and what form to take, those frogs are probably why you held onto Raiden for the longest time
If only the timer were enabled, would have liked to see if the timer was normal or reduced by 30 to 60 seconds. Granted, you were making good time and didn't dawdle around long enough for the invincible time out monster to trouble you
Overall, a very excellent run that was almost perfect if it wasn't for that one poorly placed skeleton at the bottom of that ladder
You obviously haven’t played some snes games at the time

*Your* Are Very Dangerous. *:/*
