The intro and harmonies are sung by Sting. The lyrics refer to guys working at a home appliances store and talking about MTV musicians who get money for nothing and chicks for free while they need to move refrigerators and install microwave ovens. Apparently Mark Knopfler, the guitarist, vocaiist and leader of Dire Straits, heard it in real life from some guy working at such a store.
Iconic. The video is dated now, but at the time, it was groundbreaking. The guitar is superb. Mark Knopler played guitar with fingers as opposed to a pick - even the solos.
@ I kept most of my vinyl Steve until a few months back then sold it all to a record collector lots of 70’s 80’s stuff ! I used to have a really nice separates music system but gone all wireless now ! Succumbed to the times and the wife not wanting the cables all over the place lol Yes deffo more to explore mate 👍
This was ubiquitous when it came out. I got so burned out on it. Why Worry, Walk of Life from same album and So Far Away more my jam, and the Title Track.
Try the live "Sultans of Swing" from the "Alchemy "tour from the '80's, considered one of the best live versions of any song ever! I'm sure your Dad knows it, but if he doesn't he's in for a treat..
@@MusicForTheSoulReactions you might like to check out the version of Money For Nothing from the Music For Montserrat concert too. The concert was held at the Royal Albert Hall to raise money for the people of the island of Monserrat after a devastating volcanic eruption. Sir George Martin, The Beatles producer, had a studio there and it's where Money For Nothing was recorded. The concert featured quite a line up of music legends who'd recorded there.
As explained for some VJ in MTV Brasil, "Money for Nothing" lyrics are supposed based in some Knopfler experience: some people delivering TVs and refrigerators, and probably some of these workers said almost like this "These artists in MTV, they do nothing for have all these money... and chicks for free".
I knew you'd love the intro. 😁😁 Sting's credited as a co-writer, because of the falsetto "I want my MTV" melody being the same as the Police song "Don't Stand So Close To Me". 😊 There's a great live version of it at the 1986 Prince's Trust Rock Gala, where Mark Knopfler, John Illsley and Sting perform it together with Elton John, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Eric Clapton, Ray Cooper and Phil Collins. 😊
If this is your 2nd DS song, you are one lucky ... guy ... You got the world to explore ... and when you`re done (after a while), go and check Mark Knopfler˙s solo work ... BTW: nice reaction ...

Other great hit! The music video was "iconic" with its animation. There are a lot of Dire Straits great songs, "poppier" and "rockier". The early albums are rockier, then "Love Over Gold" was a "progrock" album, sometimes decribed as "jazz-rock", but, in my opinion, "prog-pop" would be a little more accurate; "Private Investigations" was the main hit. Of course, this is my favorite, along "Tunnel of Love" (from the anterior album). Then, Dire Strais released a poppier album too, "Brothers in Arms". Along the soft title song (my Pop favorite), "Brothers in Arms" includes other Pop hits: "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life" and the softer "Your Latest Trick" and "Why Worry". Ps. The "Alchemy" album and VHS/DVD/Bluray too shows a very nice concert. And you can watch Sting singing "Money for Nothing" with Dire Straits in "Live Aid" concert. You can find this in Live Aid official UA-cam channel.
@@MusicForTheSoulReactions I don't know if I have explained correctly. - "Dire Straits" (1978) - The hit was "Sultans of Swing" - "Communiqué" (1979) - I don't remember if this album had some hit. - "Making Movies" (1980) - the hits were "Tunnel of Love", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Solid Rock" - "Love over Gold" (1982) - Hits "Private Investigations" and "Industrial Disease". - "Alchemy" - live concert in 1983 - "Brothers in Arms" (1985) - The hits were "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "Your Latest Trick", "Why Worry" and "Brothers in Arms" Dire Straits released "On Every Street" in 1991 (the main hit was "Calling Elvis"), but I really don't like this too much as the anterior albums. And there is other hit too, "Twisting by the Pool", poppier, released in 1983, in EP only. A "happier" song.👍
Hi Steve! I’ll let the roadies explain the song. Loved this tune back in the 80’s!! As someone mentioned that’s Stingo from the Police on the high vocals. I’m still a huge Police fan! The band that is.😂 if you haven’t heard the Police you should Check them out at some point. An amazing band that started as punk band with songs like Landlord then into a rock Reggae feel like Don’t Stand so Close to Me and Walking on the Moon to their own way with songs like Syncronicity 2 and King of Pain
Only police song I know is that famous every breath you take, so any other one would be a totally new exploration for me so certainly happy to give them a listen! Interesting to learn that Sting did the intro vocals, I never would have guessed!
I have sultans of swing very well but someone has suggested watching a live performance of it as I've never seen that and it's supposed to be epic. Not heard of the other song so can check that put for sure!
I recently got their first album on vinyl.. an original copy.. Have to say the songs are brilliant and the production is immence! The very first song, ''Down To The Water line''... Well all I can say is, add it to the list Stevie boy! 😊 Irish Roadie Colm! 🤘😎🤘
how funny.....I was just going to greet you by asking you how it was over there in Manchester: dark, cold, damp, grey and wet. And yes, it is! hehe......I'm from Seattle, so very similar weather this time of year...although now I live in Vegas where it's sunny and a balmy 66 degrees F. Eat your heart out....haha

the story is that this was a conversation that Mark overheard in a department store between a couple of employees watching MTV on one of the TV's.....bascially saying, WTF? That ain't workin'. They get all this money and chicks for free, and what are they doing....just playing music on MTV looking like girls. 😏😁
@@MusicForTheSoulReactions it's "That ain't working." all the way through. It's the delivery guy referring to being a musician, which he thinks isn't a real job like the manual labour he's doing. The "I want my MTV" lyrics are sung to the tune of "Don't Stand So Close To Me". Sting got a co-writing credit as a result.
