Clapton and his band, which included the backing singers, Nathan East and Phil Palmer among others, performed before Dire Straits came on and they stuck around to perform with them. 3 years before Mark Knopfler had joined Eric for his 6 shows at the Royal Albert Hall and the following year Eric had played rhythm guitar for Dire Straits when they headlined The Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium, as their then guitarist Jack Sonni's wife had just give birth to twins in New York. A few months later Mark and Alan Clark joined Eric's band for his 25th Anniversary Tour and Alan remained a member of Eric's band until Dire Straits got back together to record their final studio album, On Every Street, which was released the year after this Knebworth '90 concert. Elton John made guest appearance on Eric's anniversary tour too and he was on next. Mark and Eric both stayed on stage for his performance. For Dire Straits last tour Phil Palmer joined the band as the rhythm guitarist. When Eric was performing his set at Knebworth '90 one of his strings broke. He turned round and said "Over to you Phil" before walking off stage to get his guitar restrung (or to collect his backup) leaving Phil to improvise a solo, which of course being the great professional he is he managed with consummate ease despite the added pressure of Eric and Mark watching on from the wings.
Really nice reaction! You should definitely try another perfect song from this gig called I Think I Love You Too Much in which Mark and Eric are taking turns on beautiful bluesy solos✌️
There is footage of Clapton's 1988 Japan tour with Mark playing second guitar. He occupied himself during Dire Straits hiatus.
