Pain. I am student at Cal Poly Humboldt and Chico State.Colleges such as Cal Poly Humboldt prohibits night parking for students who live out of their cars. Last month the school informed students camping in the campus parking lot that they can't stay there plus the police issued parking tickets. Im grateful that I take all my classes online however my rent went up 100 % a few months ago. I am also grateful that my Fam was my landlord and didnt raise the rent for 12 years. I recently moved since I had a housing voucher for San Bernardino and due to my Crohn's disease plus disc degenerative disease I got a medical accommodation (transfer). Yet and still the cost to survive is too inflated.
I work for a homeless organization and the problem isn’t just in liberal cities as you’ve noted. The problem is all over the U.S. since rent prices skyrocketed during the pandemic. This isn’t a liberal vs conservative problem, it’s a problem because the government won’t take care of the elderly or our veterans that have built this country. Their social security benefits can’t cover rent after rent prices have increased up to $800 a month in a matter of just two years. Now that inflation has gone down, are these prices going to come back down to an affordable cost, or are landlords going to be greedy by keeping prices fixed? At least these college students are going somewhere in life that the problem won’t persist for long term. I just hope the problem doesn’t reoccur when they’re 55-60 years old like it has for our elderly.

Great documentary. I can totally relate. I was the homeless California college student in 2020. It's a horrible and terrible feeling trying to better yourself in life (during a global pandemic) in addition to the grind of looking for a place and a job. California Judges and Policy makers must wake up to the real life day-to-day that has become the California Nightmare.
I lived in in my car to attend college in California from 1976-1980. So did countless others I met at the time. So quit feeling sorry for yourself. You aren't special after all.
Why would we feel sorry for people who are expected to overcome the same obstacles that others have for generations? Zoomers think that every life experience is new and uique to them. It gets ridiculous.@@chrisbishop4671
This is one of so many reasons I've left California and left the States to work, study and teach in Europe. This is much more prevalent than people realise, and it is a uniquely American problem... like the mass shootings, the healthcare, the cost of higher education, the crushing debt... and it is not unique to California. I'm not going back to the Deluded States. I cannot justify investing time and tax dollars into a "country" that perceives owning a assault rifles to be a human right while housing, healthcare, education, and mobility (public transport) are not human rights. To any American students watching this documentary, especially those considering a graduate degree, I want to recommend Germany or another European country. Do not waste another second of your time or talent on that corporate farce of a country that calls itself the "United States".
You are very lucky if you were able to leave the US. It's extremely expensive to do so, plus there are a million restrictions. Good for you for getting out, but keep in mind most of us can't.
Germany (and the whole of Europe) has a housing crisis too. Admittedly, it's not as bad as in California, but it's getting there. We just don't have enough space anymore to accommodate everyone, especially with the influx of millions of refugees from Africa and the middle east. The entire western world is in decline.
All demos/left running states/cities are dying and are barely on life support. It seems retail theft this year alone costs $95B. They pass on the costs to consumers or close the stores. Biden admin let in more than 8M illegals into the country including terrorists. The Democrats never accept responsibility for their own mismanagement. The tide is shifting for sure.
Come to Turkey and live in peace; education, health care, and hospitals are all free, housing is inexpensive, and the country is filled with natural beauty
You're not homeless my friend. You're houseless, don't be ashamed to look at your car, at least you have some my wall. I'll be back in my Van but I love it, I chose it. I do Van life live. I must say that Serbia is "Las Vegas" compared to the students' lives in the US. EACH AND EVERY student in Serbia, who wants to learn, can do it. There are university campuses and students' "hotels", which includes the Internet connection, students' restaurants, libraries and gyms for almost free of charge (let's say $20 per month). Also, there is a job board, so everyone can find a part-time job if needed. Scholarship costs 0 (zero, nada) for 1/3 best students.

being a roommate or bouncing from couch to couch as a student , was normal for many decades. You go where you can get best tuition and programs, and that means commutes to far from your parents house. American culture frowns on young adults living with their parents(shameful, and weird) but that is changing. In Europe some people never leave home
Young adults can’t buy homes in NYC and the outer neighborhoods. Now we have migrants and it’s a sh&t show. Pharmacy’s has closed and limited food supply
When I see many homeless around the world, I thank my grandma who taught us early on not to take drugs or drink alcohol. She said if you want to be homeless one day, just abuse yourself by drinking and taking drugs. You will get there. I don’t. I run a normal life and come back up during life difficulties because I have a clear head to deal with them.
Very sad to hear what these students go through. Gone are the days when school was affordable. I worked with homeless in nyc for years, they need all the help they can get. I always help the homeless
Just found this video. I use to live in Chicago. The homeless persons name was Genevieve. I have a daughter named Genevieve and her husband's name is Anthony. What a coincidence.
I feel for these students. I was a college student in CA in the early 2000's. You can blame your CA politicians that have open borders and let unlimited illegals in. I'm a legal immigrant in the early 90's. Also high cost to build housing and NIMBYISM is another huge problem that adds to housing crisis. I have bad news for the future generations... life will only get worse. All your degrees including STEM and doctorate degrees will not guarantee decent life.
Don't forget the federal government guaranteeing student loans. There is no incentive for schools not to raise tuition, they get their money either way.
To be honest when i see this i only can say one thing. LONG LIVE EUROPE (The only place in the world where you work to life instead life to work) USA is becoming a SHAME
Well as more and more migrants descend on Europe resources become stretched and the milk of human kindness stops at a certain point. When native people cannot find work due to migrants working harder than native people are prepared to work and they will work for less money, it starts a downward spiral. People cannot find a good paying job, they cannot afford an apartment or even a room as demand now outstrips supply. Medical services become stretched, education services become stretched and there is no end in sight to the migration happening and it is only going to get worse as areas of the world experience severe weather conditions or earthquakes ect. I don't blame the migrants by the way as I would do whatever it took to provide for my own family including going thousands of miles away to secure a job and send money back to them.
If I teach my children anything, it's going to be basic financial literacy. So important to understand the cost/benefits ratio of education. Many people would be better off starting a small business with a 5k loan than 100k in debt for a college degree.
So no professional life, no doctors or lawyers or scientists? Everyone is not meant to be a plumber or electrician we need more critical thinking skilled people to create innovation and technology to move the human Race forward. It’s currently moving backwards because people lack understanding in mathematics 🧮
You think you understand financial literacy but can't comprehend the fact that the wages don't pay the rent and you won't get paid well without some kind of degree unless you're phenomenally gifted and lucky. Furthermore most are in the bracket where they receive financial aid, not enough, but more than they'd make by McDonald's alone, making school itself a financial necessity after grants and scholarships. $5000 won't start a business in most big cities, not even close.
This is happening to Australian students in some parts of the country too, but nowhere near the extreme of America. The problems with American unis seem to be staggering by comparison. In Europe, there isn't a tuition so to speak, but there are students who are still economically disadvantaged and struggle with accommodation. For all our problems though, I'm glad the majority of students here are not trying to pursue degrees in the United States.
The cost of tuition for Australian public Universities exceeds the cost of most USA public universities by a very large margin. And with the current complete lack of any housing in virtually all of Australia, your comments seems to be nothing more than manhood envy. Oh BTW a 3 year Bachelor degree from an Australia is not recognised in almost every country outside of Australia as the standard is 4 years of study.Thie students that go to the USA for their degrees have far far more opportunity upon graduation than thjise who stayed in Au

I am half German, these stories are nothing unique to the US. I witnessed Germany going through this era in the 1980s unemployment was high and housing was very tight. German fees and taxes also zapped peoples abilities to live a normal existence. Gasoline was sold by the liter and super expensive. I had car insurance $100 per month ($1,200 per year in 1989) and that was just liability coverage not covering any damage to the car.
Yo , we’ve heard the same rhetoric about making a difference, making things easier and equitable for all people for hundreds of years… the Great Depression, the dust bowls , 2008, but instead we’re seeing more people worse off than a decade ago or even a century ago
The thing about living. Alternatively, when living actuallyadh or Van. Do not park alone in a parking lot. Or place where you're the only car. Because you're attract more attention when you're the only one I say blending with other vehicles if possible.
You should invest in buying a Van my friend and turn it into a nice home and a high top Van. The spending of good used vans all over the place turn to a home. You got plenty of space to live in just like a room. And you'll never have to look for a place to pay rent. Never, if you do it right I don't. I'll never pay high rent again never.

CA is the Homeless Capital of the USA because we have the best weather in the world. It does rain in the winter though. Every month thousands of Homeless Americans migrate to CA to be homeless so they don't freeze to death.
@finessnu2903 I'm from CA . I live in Los Angeles. I personally help homeless people here. Every month I meet new homeless people who move to LA from other states. 60percent are Chemically Addicted. CA let's them live outside and do drugs and alcohol. Other states force them into rehabs or jail
People in the past were forced to roommate with others, take out loans to survive and help pay rent, but so many people don't want to do that anymore. They want free everything and don't do what they did in the past to make it.
Fifty years ago, education was free in Australia. After fifty years of neoliberal governments, our young people get themselves into deep debt just to study - it seems where the US leads, Australia must follow.
I'm from the States, and I studied and worked in Australia for 3 years in the early 2000s. My family is low-income, but we were fortunate to never be homeless. We had no healthcare though. In Sydney, I paid international tuition plus a mandatory fee for health coverage through Medibank Private. It was still a fraction of the cost of what I had paid to study for one year in the States (where I am from). And, Australia was the first place that I ever lived where I had healthcare. As a child, I was not taken to the doctor because of the cost, so it was quite an adjustment to think that I could go to the doctor in Australia when I got sick. I was allowed to apply for permission to work up to 20 hours per week as an int'l student in Australia. I could work off campus anywhere that would hire me. During breaks between semesters, I could work an unlimited amount of hours. Int'l students in the States are not allowed to do this. I finished university in Australia completely debt-free while my former US classmates are still paying off their degrees. The only thing I had to pay for was a foreign transcript evaluation (about $250) once I left Australia. No matter how bad things get (and I realise the situation is deteriorating there), on its worst day, Australia cannot not be as disgraceful as the Deluded States are on their best day. But... if the situation in Australia becomes increasingly dire, I will say the same to Aussie students that I say to Americans. Move to Europe.
Outside of Germany I can't name one country with free college. Australian public univerisities now charge more for tuition than most USA private schools. New Zealand offers ONE free year, only if you have never enrolled in any univeristy, ever previously, and after the first year, the rest of your education will be stupidly expnesive...UK..need I go on? It's not countries follwoing the USA it is countries submitting to the will of low or no tax for large corporations and the rich.
No. Idiots in America love Rupert Murdock for telling lies and keeping them stoopido. Useful idiots for corporate oligarchs. Demorats and rethuglicans. Americans have been too stoopido to live since saint Ronny reagan' and slick Willie Clinton. Not to blame you or Australia. Predatory capitalism and the Almighty dollar did it. Get rich or die. Mission accomplished.
Most politicians don't give a d***, don't care and I don't think you're any different as a politician as long as you make your money and everything you'll forget about the homeless just like everybody else cause if you didn't there would not be so much homeless people in. America today. The fact that there is a lot of homeless people prove that point.

Do you think scholarships are handed out like sweets? They are very rare and only given to outstanding students. Secondly, more often than not, they are not full scholarships. You are still expected to cover some of the costs. Thirdly, do not assume everyone has a nice stable suburban family to depend on. Thirdly, what 'new home' are you talking about? Even working people are now homeless because of shortages of affordable housing and/or exorbitant rising rents. Think!

A very important thing to note is that in the US, once you reach age 18 you are utterly on your own. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, no one will help you. You are absolutely on your own.
Belgium here. We do support oour adult children until they can earn their own living. At first I supported my working son in the UK because the pay was just not enough for rent AND other necessities. Then I supported him through 5 years of university. His Bachelor's degree was for free as the UK was still in the EU and there was reciprocal free education. His Master's degree, now after Brext, cost me an arm and a leg, plus of course accommodation. What irked me was that througout Covid the cost never fell, inspite of classes being online and my son actually home in Belgium for months on end. Not all parents can support their kids to that degree apart from letting them live at home. I am all the prouder that my son, after 9 years of consistent and unwavering support, earns a good living and never asks for a penny.
This is probably the experience of a portion of young adults, unfortunately. It is a state of affairs often seen in the UK as well. But I also know plenty of American and British parents who will never stop supporting their offspring.

Hundreds and thousands with jobs are still homeless that’s the state of California.
@@alexcarter8807 I don't think moving from the US to Europe is expensive. For Americans getting European visas is not difficult.
Alternatively, downsides, you can work less and enjoy your life, and I'm more freedom. What do do it right? I have some money in your pocket which you probably don't worry about people think.
I would think parking in isolated area is more unsafe than maybe a wal mart parking or more populated place.

I believe many college students are not only homeless, but are hungry and don't have clothing as well.
Devin seems like a sweet guy. He really seems like a good person What is queer pansexual? I don’t know I feel confused. How and when did we start saying what we identify as? It’s very strange to me. Why is it necessary to tell strangers your most personal information. Seems like it’s none of anyone’s business what your sexuality is and it seems like no one wants to know anyway. Agin seems like Devin is a real nice guy
Hehe! I am also wondering what a queer pansexual is....Makes no sense to me...
Not everybody's going to make a rich my friend don't be ashamed because you didn't make it rich so what I'm also living and you're comfortable. That's what counts I didn't make it rich either but I don't care. I love my life just the way it is, but that's me.
Sometimes you have to delay your goal of college education and focus on housing, and basic needs. College isn’t going anywhere.
It’s sad though.

being a roommate or bouncing from couch to couch as a student , was normal for many decades.

Good advices, not enough to be ok but still have to be applied
Very sad to hear what these students go through. Gone are the days when school was affordable. I worked with homeless in nyc for years, they need all the help they can get. I always help the homeless

Are you being kept as a slave?
Don't forget the federal government guaranteeing student loans. There is no incentive for schools not to raise tuition, they get their money either way.
To be honest when i see this i only can say one thing. LONG LIVE EUROPE (The only place in the world where you work to life instead life to work) USA is becoming a SHAME
The USA is a third world country, a failed state.
This happens in Europe too
True but not on a massive scale when i think about California i see Sunshine and Homeless people and fat people.@@musicguy20
Happening in Europe too. Here in France it's really bad.😢
This Is California. My state. I read the room and made sure to front run these issues.
If I teach my children anything, it's going to be basic financial literacy. So important to understand the cost/benefits ratio of education. Many people would be better off starting a small business with a 5k loan than 100k in debt for a college degree.
The home town matters with that 5k loan for a business establishment .
@@JustGoAndFly That's not even one month's rent .
yup cost and investment always related. you got your point

thank you to inform me about the decrease of the indicators in USA
This is all by design.
Oh BTW a 3 year Bachelor degree from an Australia is not recognised in almost every country outside of Australia as the standard is 4 years of study.Thie students that go to the USA for their degrees have far far more opportunity upon graduation than thjise who stayed in Au
yeah the US has A LOT of problems
@@vikm1341The USA has a lot of problems as does most every developed nation. The UK is far worse off with a non existant economy and a housing crisi severy bit as bad. When I was homeless I found a spot in the woods near a small pond. I drove my car back to the spot and slept in a tent. I used a bucket for when I needed to take a dump in the morning and put it in the pond.
Park at different apartment complexes as well as 24 hour stores rotate them. I pray your life gets better real soon.
U cant afford to live in Cali, unless u have a trust fund, or a high paying job

You should invest in buying a Van my friend and turn it into a nice home and a high top Van. The spending of good used vans all over the place turn to a home. You got plenty of space to live in just like a room. And you'll never have to look for a place to pay rent. Never, if you do it right I don't. I'll never pay high rent again never.

CA is the Homeless Capital of the USA because we have the best weather in the world. It does rain in the winter though. Every month thousands of Homeless Americans migrate to CA to be homeless so they don't freeze to death.

@finessnu2903 yes the middle class have to move out of CA. CA politicians only want rich here to SUPER TAX them.
Florida is super humid lol. Its not because of the weather, it’s because its a very expensive state. And the job market is not great.
Confront World OVERPOPULATION (homelessness, immigration, wars, etc will just get worse if we ignore OVERPOPULATION)
People realise they can benefit off of student debt so it becomes a thing because both university and individuals can get rich off of it
I'm from the States, and I studied and worked in Australia for 3 years in the early 2000s.
Education and health still cheaper than USA especially California.
A very important thing to note is that in the US, once you reach age 18 you are utterly on your own. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, no one will help you. You are absolutely on your own.
that's just not true; there's no legal obligation but many are helped by their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings,
Thats the American way... For someone who is 21- 25 years old to still living with parents is "not common" in the US? Talk about "Family values"...
I cannot imagine NOT helping my adult son.
