Why did I gaslight myself into understanding this? They were totally talking about dropping their car off at the mechanic and how the weeks been going but he mentioned a woman and totally revealed he was cheating. Like, his partner even made him a surprise pineapple (?) for a celebration too. Totally the story.

+Zach Mask My mother speaks French sometimes so I can't understand what she's saying just because I help my father to learn English by speaking the language with him hahahaha
For those wondering how this is literally gibberish yet it makes perfect sense somehow and sounds convincing to foreign speakers, there is actually a technique in theatre called "Grammelot" and these two have mastered the English version of it.
Makes sense because whenever I see these types of videos, it clearly takes skill to speak your language but not really speak your language. Idk how people do it
They are speaking half ass words, there is substance there, context, but the words are all messed up. You can hear him talk about working on something and she disagrees with how it was handled or perceived by others.
This right here is acting. This is like a technique called grammelot where you use incoherent or nonsensical words but use tone, body language etc to portray a scene. Chances are you didnt understand a single sentence that was being said but you felt it. There was clearly a story to this and these two did it perfectly. It genuinely amazed me how they were able to move me in a scene where next to none of it was intelligible. Massive well done to these two
What I understood is that she did something he found suspicious, maybe he thought she was cheating, but turns out she was just buying stuff to celebrate his birthday ...? Yeah, no, I tried.
Ooo ok so I’m definitely looking into Grammelot now!! I fully agree that this is a great film. Haven’t stopped by this classic short in ages now but it has always lived in my brain rent free alongside Prisencolinensinainciusol 😂

This is exactly what it's like when two people are talking and you aren't paying attention for their whole conversation until they talk to you directly
Stephanie Fowler flipping yes! As a person who prefers one on one conversations over group chatter I take such issue with this. Like, I don't even care that I'm temporarily left out of the conversation, I just wanna know why I have suddenly lost the ability to comprehend my native tongue!
Stephanie Fowler lol...yeah and when people are arguing about something and you're thinking about something random and not paying attention...and suddenly they turn to you and say "Am I right?"
As an English speaker, It’s hilarious torture listening to this. It’s like listening to another language and only catching a few words, but not enough to make ANY sense of it at all! [Or when the water is running] Very well done.
So, do you understand what they are talking about or you don't understand everything? I thought that native speakers understand everything and always 🤨
If I had to guess, the guy had forgotten her last birthday, so she was being passive aggressive about it and pointed it out when it was his. He replied something like "well, you didn't remember it's my birthday today, so it's a tie." To which, she promptly went and took the cake and stuff. But that's just my interpretation of the video. Might certainly be wrong.
When i hadn’t learned English, this is EXACTLY what is sounded like to me!! This is awesome! A lot of weird, non-rolled “r”s, a lot of “wow”-ish sounds, this is extremely accurate and also nostalgic!
this is actually so FRIGGIN good. This sounds like an actual conversation if you dont actually pay attention. If only they added closed captions, that would make this 10x better.
I didn't expect to get this many upvotes, I guess that speaks to just how good their acting really is. I hope the creators see this even though the video is 4 years old.
As a non native speaker...this video is just genius. This is how English sounded for me when I started to learn it and knew only basic expressions. And this is how it rarely sounds to me now when I'm very tired and can't focus. Like you understand but not really and you wouldn't be able to explain what was said.
He said how his day was at work and she said how her day was. Then he said he had plans to do something Thursday but she got mad because he forgot their anniversary so he said what did I do now. Why did I gaslight myself into understanding this? They were totally talking about dropping their car off at the mechanic and how the weeks been going but he mentioned a woman and totally revealed he was cheating. Like, his partner even made him a surprise pineapple (?) for a celebration too. Totally the story.
The fact that I catch one or two words and don't get the rest really bothers me.
+Zach Mask that's how it is when you hear French or Spanish I'm sure. think about it.
+Zach Mask That's how I used to "understand" English before actually learning the language. And as a Brazilian, portuguese and english are veeery different languages
Miguel Almeida I bet. I attempted to learn French once...didn't go so well. Had a better time with Italian, slightly, but didn't have anyone to practice with.
+Zach Mask My mother speaks French sometimes so I can't understand what she's saying just because I help my father to learn English by speaking the language with him hahahaha
+Zach Mask welcome to my world, dont get me wrong, 10 years ago i didnt know shit and i can say that this is exactly how it is
For those wondering how this is literally gibberish yet it makes perfect sense somehow and sounds convincing to foreign speakers, there is actually a technique in theatre called "Grammelot" and these two have mastered the English version of it.
Wait, do you mean that this is not understandable language??
Makes sense because whenever I see these types of videos, it clearly takes skill to speak your language but not really speak your language. Idk how people do it
They are speaking half ass words, there is substance there, context, but the words are all messed up. You can hear him talk about working on something and she disagrees with how it was handled or perceived by others.
Thanks, Cherryb0ng!

Massive well done to these two
I understood when she called him a funding asshole.
That aside the acting really sucked me in. Was superb
The guy isn't even an actor - he's one of the two guys who wrote it. The woman is an actor they hired.

This is exactly what it's like when two people are talking and you aren't paying attention for their whole conversation until they talk to you directly
or when you don't have your hearing aids on/ too many people talking at once.
Stephanie Fowler holy crap very accurate
Similiar thing with music on radio. Until you really start paying attention, you might assume it's foreign language while it's your native language.

1:55 "Chad's a long way from the rainbow seasonal and, uh...."
Forget the jumbled English. I want to know why she's so upset.
What I can get from it is that he cheated on her or something of the sort.

All the (at the time) children were sitting on their own tables and I was sometimes sitting kinda close to the wall where a TV was placed, playing shows that looked, sounded, felt and made no sense to me exactly like this one here. Even with subtitles. It was always such a strange experience.
