Dream Boy was very disappointing because it had a tragic ending whereas the book had a happy ending. Why did the filmmaker feel this was the right thing to do?

I couldn’t agree more. I read the book prior to seeing the movie and didn’t watch the movie in one setting. Before continuing it the next day, I decided to read the reviews on IMDB. When I read a spoiler and it spoke of the dismal alternative ending, I opted not to finish the movie.

Dream Boy is a pretty good movie set in the rural South back in the 70s and features a closeted relationship between two gay teenage boys. One is a school bus driver and the other is a really shy boy, who rides the bus and is badly bullied. As the two boys become closer, the bullied guy becomes dependent upon the bus driver for protection. The two live close together and soon become intimate. For the most part, I enjoyed the movie until the tragic ending. I didn't read the book but as some of the comments indicate, the book has a happy ending which I think would have made for a better movie. I would still recommend it. Ah, teenage gay love.

  • @Classical741

Dream Boy was frustrating because of its ambiguous dark ending. If you like supernatural movies, you might like it. The whole atmosphere is sort of southern gothic-modern, I guess you could call it. It has a dark inevitability about the ending, which is certainly violent and disturbing. On second watching, the ending didn't seem as final or as tragic as I thought. There is a genre of gay movies with ambiguous endings which can be taken two ways. An excellent one of that kind is Last Summer which I find is a lyrical beautiful, intelligent love story with an ending that can probably be read different ways. There are a number of shorts that are like that too, and I recommend Louder Than Words as that type. (P.S. to Rainbow Moods: "gay cancer" was AIDS, and the 1980-90s were terrifying years for gay men. Please also get rid of the mechanical voice!)

Gay films are mostly made in very low quality. The acting, direction, and screenplay are weak. Many films look caricatured, with underdeveloped and superficial characters. Plots are built on stereotypes about gay people and only reinforce them. Gay people are also multifaceted and think not only about their orientation. They also think about 'humanity' question, god or its absence, morality, ethics, Nature, success, creativity, death and life, the beauty of the planet. There are very few movies that show gays as full-fledged people, rather than as an 'image' or a stereotyped 'model' of the community. There are only a few high quality films about gays, and "Brokeback Mountain" is one of them. Because it conveys the way of life, mindset, rules and the peculiarity of that time, it shows not only the feelings of gays but also the feelings of people outside the context of orientation - individuals as such, constrained by the framework of the social views of that time. Love shown there is not "the idea of love" but love. The nature, its wildness and naturalness, which is in line with the masculinity of love, is also shown. There is also the another film "Dallas Buyers Club", which also conveys the problems of the entire society, the influence of big pharma on the lives of people, which also affects minorities. These are serious and significant films. Many other gay films are too naive, simple and unserious, as if made for teenagers and their ideas about ideal love. Making "shallow" and naïve films about gays is also disrespect for gays. Directors need to surpass the stereotype bar. And gay people need to start respecting themselves and stop supporting stereotypes about themselves; learn to be themselves, not always be a 'stereotyped template' for perception. what matters in a person is their humanity, not their sexual orientation. Sexual orientation cannot fully represent individual. Do not simplify people just by their sexual orientation. They are bigger.

It explains “Amar Sin Miedo” is so ‘unpopular’ is because this film has not been officially released anywhere. It did have a release date of September 22, 2022, but it never premiered. Nor can it be found anywhere to streaming service, which is unfortunate since looks like a decent film to watch.
