Sick cover, great explanation! I'm on the Triad trail! A very fun way to practice the swiss triplets is putting on the new Tool album and practicing along to a couple songs. First Invincible, then Descending, and finally Pneuma. With the 7 feel, it keeps alternating the feeling of which 16th note and which hand is the lead. Anyways, great video, thanks for sharing!!

That is definitely the most challenging part of the song, coordination-wise. From my experience, simply listening to that section over and over again was the best way to learn and understand it.

DAMMIT I learned the pattern with inverted hands!! I always thought that "the shuffling hand" was the right! I think that your transcription makes more sense.I have to learn it once again backwards... by the way kudos man! If you're consistent with 60, 30, or even 15 minutes of practice each day, you'll see and feel improvement in your drumming. Honestly man, after watching guys like Travis Orbin and Alex Rüdinger drum (both live and on UA-cam), I have rather strong doubts about my drumming more often than you might imagine. But there's really no good that comes from doubting yourself to the point where you've written yourself off, essentially. Just love drumming for what it is. You'll learn the patterns in this song.

Great, well-explained lesson. I know I'm quite later, but doesn't it make more sense to think of the song in 6/8 rather than 4/4? I've always felt it in 6, but I'm not sure if I'm hearing it incorrectly.
Honestly, just think of it however you prefer. If 6/8 works for you, then that's perfect for you. I don't think that you're "hearing it incorrectly." The stuff I presented in this lesson is simply what worked for me.

My best advice would be to first practice the exercises that I begin demonstrating at 16:00. Then, maybe initially perform only the first of the three hi-hat chicks (they cycle in three's) in the pattern...followed by playing hi-hat chicks one and two...finally bring that third one in there, and begin trying to cycle that. That's my best advice, personally. Hope that helps!
That was what I had the most trouble with too. The thing is the rhythm has a very heavy triplet feel right up until the quarter note hi hat starts coming in, it transforms how the entire rhythm sounds as a whole. That being said, what helped me was just doing my left and right foot before I tried to incorporate my hands into it. The two legs working together have a very specific feel to it (i.e the feeling of both legs hitting simultaneously) and once you work that out, it starts to become a lot more natural feeling. At that point is when you could start trying to bring the hands into it, one hand at a time if need be.
You’ve probably learned a lot since 2014 but I wanna tell people that don’t know the 4/3 and 4/4 over each other that meet up every 3 measures is a basic polynomial it obviously doesn’t sound basic but like he said if you break it down and have good rythm then you could probably give learning this a go

If you’re left handed and have a left handed kit yes, but if you’re right handed then you won’t be able to play the song exactly correct. Anyway it’s good be able to play it both ways.

That's an excellent question for which I have a decent answer. Danny utilizes Swiss triplets in the live version of this song. But in the studio version, I honestly believe that he's only playing L L with his left hand on the open snare throughout the entire first half of the song. I struggle to hear any tom work (oddly enough) in the studio version. Danny is known for really letting loose live; he always absolutely kills it on stage! As a result, I think he kinda "beefed up" Triad's drum parts when Tool used to perform this one (hopefully they'll play it again at some point in the future!). I enjoy both versions.
yeah i definately see the swiss triplets in the live one, i used to play that one multiple times a day for a couple months as a beginner just apin around (i was also infected by dannys awe inspiring drum hypnosis) and now that i know how it really goes im like pumping L LR R all throughout the day til i get back to my set, but my band is gonna play the studio version hopefully sometime soon so im just kinda stumped as to how that might be different. i thought it was R R where yo uwould play the L L on the snare and then he does that shot on the snare in couples of 3?
Brian Fahey If you wanted, you could play the repeating groupings of two snare hits with your right hand (to mimic the studio version), but for all theoretical purposes in relation to Danny's live sticking, you'd technically play L L on the snare. Check out the second of the three transcription documents that I made; the snare hits in the studio version fall where the L's are in that transcription document.
