If the weather holds out I plan to take the RAR and Savage FV-SR out to Bullet Creek tomorrow for a side-by-side function comparison. On the agenda is: 1) Trigger-smoothness , creep, break etc. 2) Muzzle velocity 3) Accuracy at 25 yds - have put identical scopes on both 4) Suppression using same suppressor- will look an sound and point-of-impact changes. Is there any other aspect of function you can think of that you want me to check out?? Let me know.
I own the Savage. Golf balls at 50 yards is too easy. I agree with your assessment about the finish on the FV-SR. The Ruger looks to be of higher build quality. I await your shooting test.
Awesome job on both these videos Michael. Very thorough and informative. My luck that you're reviewing the very rifles I'm interested in. Can't tell you how much I appreciate people like yourself, going to considerable effort to share your passion, and views to those of us with similar interests. Looking forward to the rest of your videos....looks like you've been busy enjoying your retirement.
As someone has already pointed out, the Savage Mark II F has factory iron sights. You also have the option to put on a scope. I bought one for $150 at Walmart. I also learned that the butt of the rifle can be unscrewed to add survival materials. I am hitting small targets at 50 yards right out of the box. For only $150 I feel every penny was well spent on the Savage.
I researched about what bolt action rifle to buy and I liked the finish of the Ruger American Rimfire. So I bought the Ruger American Rimfire with the 22 inch barrel. Shortly afterward I found a basic Savage Mark ii at the pawnshop and bought it too. I'm nothing short of disappointed with the Ruger as the Savage is much more accurate. Maybe the 18 inch Ruger is the way to go but the 22 inch doesn't get it done.
Canada (Savage Mk.II) vs. USA (Ruger American Rimfire) gun comparison. This is a really nice video. Looking at the Ruger, I think that a better match for it would be the Savage Mk.II FSS because it has iron sights. The FV-SR was made specifically to be used with a scope which is why it doesn't have iron sights.
I just bought a Savage Mark II, but mine is the basic model: tapered barrel, iron sights. Otherwise the same: free-floating barrel, same bolt, 10 round mag, synthetic stock, sling pegs and tapped for an optic rail--about $180.00.
Also, the basic model I have has a 20" barrel that is not threaded. Shoots a fist size group at 50 yards with the stock open sights. 60-year-old eyes, so I want to try a compact optic--any thoughts?
The Savage I have has the larger handle. I also have 60 year old eyes. The Savage FV-SR Mark 2 has a shorter threaded (suppressor ready) barrel. I can't see putting a top dollar scope on a low end rifle. I start with Simmons 22 MAG scopes on this type of rifle. about $35-40. Get better rings than come with the scope and you should be fine. If you are going to use the rifle for serious work then invest in better glass.
Savage dose make some with sights, I have the Mark II FVT comes with a great set of peep sights. One thing I love about Savage you can pick what you want, sights, no sights, or a good set of peep sights. I also have the Mark II TR Just had it you yesterday and shot 4 - 5 round groups that can be completely covered with a dime, 3/8" center to center and the other 2 just a bit of the edge of the holes peeking pas the dime. That is at 25 yards. have to clean up my range to get back to 50 and 65 yards.
I enjoyed this video, although it’s somewhat dated now. I have a newer Savage .17hmr, which has the flush mag, better finish, and improved stock. Looks like Savage took note of Ruger’s advantages...and it’s a tack-driver with a BSM Sweet 17 scope. I hope to now find a Ruger American in left-hand.

this is one of the best and informative rifle reviews I haver had the pleasure to watch. I am in the market for another .22 lr rifle, and my primary use will be "serious plinking" and some target shooting too. I already own a Ruger American Rimfire, and it is a GOOD rifle,...now I want a Savage This review has helped my buying decision..
@@Pressingontoperfection Well Ryan, as they are both .22 caliber rifles, and as you are no doubt, aware, a rifle is only as good as the ammunition used in it,...well almost ( :) ) I like them both, and honestly, I enjoy shooting with both of them,... if you 'push' me for an answer, I'd have to give the edge to my Savage for accuracy.
Thanks reg I'm trying to decide and I've racked my brain for days over this haha. When I was feeling out the savage mark 2 fv sr it seemed like the bolt was sticking. . .
@@Pressingontoperfection Is the bolt 'sticking' as it's moved to close and open? If so have you thought of trying a small bit of valve lapping compound, fine grade, on the bolt body,...polish it on it's full length then use a good grade synthetic gun lubricant. If the 'stickiness' still persists then use the same fine compound on the slide area; be sure to use a good cleaner after using the compound and maybe use a genuine Q-Tip to apply that good quality gun lubricant.( cheap 'Q-Tip' knock off brands may tend to leave it's cotton wool fibers in and on the bolt etc.) It did work for me,...I do hope it helps you too. Cheers!
again you can get a rotary magazine in the Savage A22 and the B22 bough great rifles and again have a very large choice in how you want them to come. My Mark II all have 21" barrels. plus the Savage rotary magazine in the savage holds 10 rounds, think the Ruger only holds 9 also all my Savages have free floating barrels. never had to do any thing to make them free floating, I also like the flat finish on the Savage, don't need something glairing in the sun, though that was a nice touch Savage gave it.
Which one do you find to be more accurate? I went with the Ruger because I liked the finish a little more, and the flush mounting magazine. I've often wondered if I sacrificed accuracy for the preferences I chose.
I did a field comparison here ua-cam.com/video/kLNC2TVFMxk/v-deo.html Bottom line both are similar and I thin the best thing to do is try several different 22lr ammo loads until you find the one your rifle shoots the best with. You will probably be surprised at how different the accuracy is between different rounds. Find what shoots best in your rifle and stick with that.
tw8e60 Thanks! Please feel free to share with friends and check out our other videos. We are new at this but have a lot of topics we will cover. Should have 1 or 2 new videos done by the end of next week.
I realize that it's been 5 years since you published this, but there are a couple of things that I would like to say. First is that the Ruger trigger pull is adjustable from 3 to 5 pounds. If a lighter trigger pull is desired, you can easily take the trigger spring out an replace it with a much lighter spring. I did that with my RAR, and it is now set at a 2 pound trigger pull. I could adjust it down more than that, but I thought 2 pounds was a good weight for trigger pull. Also, Ruger does have a model that has a tactical bolt handle and a little heavier barrel.
try getting closer matches savage has lots with sights , if you want scope try the savage Mark ll TR it has a 22" heavy barrel and puts 5 shot groups in side a dime at 60 Yd with bulk amo. I love this gun and going to try to get a savage mark ll FVT it comes with peep sights and a heavy barrel You should try these guns and do a video on them I think you will be very happy with them.
did like the video but wish you would compare apples to apples, the Savage can come with every thing the Ruger has I did go with the TR for a bench scoped rifle as that stock fits me like a glove can pick it up with my eyes closed and open my eyes and the scope is lined up. Have the A22 but looking at the Savage B22 But in 22WMR have the 93 F in the 22WMR and it is a tack driver as are my Mark II's I really like the Savage rotary magazines Like the sock on the B22 Magnum precision but only a 18" barrel the B22 Magnum FV 22 WMR also has a nice stock and a 21" barrel, but not adjustable I also like the heavy barrel on the FV22. Savage has come a long way in the last 5 or so years. Had to go and get another gun safe, to make room, but now I am 73 and most likely not to get out hunting could sell some of my hunting rifles and just stick to target and of cores the 44 mag and the 444 marlin great fun to shoot. I also found that I like the long and heavy barrels, just feel better even when shooting off hand. Would like to see the video on the range with those 2 rifles. would be interesting to watch. hope you use some CCI Standard Velocity that shoots great in all my .22 bold action rifles.

Great video's on these rifles. I've been wanting the FV-SR for awhile, have in on a wait list at my gun shop actually. If you're having troubling deciding between the Tacti-cool Savage and the fit and finish of the Ruger, as I was at first, this model may solve your dilemma: www.theshootingstore.com/single-product?product_id=200447
The Iron sights on the standard keeps me wondering if should go with that one in 18" threaded barrel. The only real difference with the shooting store model is a heavy barrel and already installed rail.
Better built, yes I agree. However, my choice was the Savage F and have no regret. As a bunny hunter in a cold climate, I find the Savage is much, much lighter and the iron sights are excellent and is very accurate off hand. It has studs for a sling but due to lightness, I've never used them. If you use a 5 round mag, it sits very close to flush. My friend has the Ruger and while heavier, it's very well built. For practicality, I love the lightness and point ability of the Savage - but both are completely reliable.
I been fond of the savage lately, but the ruger flush mag sells it for me

The Iron sights on the standard keeps me wondering if should go with that one in 18" threaded barrel. The only real difference with the shooting store model is a heavy barrel and already installed rail.

ruger better value..thank. next time put link of field test...still cant find it, but like I said, thanks
UA-cam changed the annotation options a couple of months ago and previous links got deleted.
Ruger wins.
more than 16 inches of barrel slows down the bullet.
I have heard that 16 inches is the optimal barre length for 22LR. This seams to bear that out. Thanks for watching!
I've owned both. Buy Ruger.
Ruger is more refined.
ruger just copys everyones else design .. all there in house guns never sell and suck
Ruger is better,
Better built, yes I agree.
