My current preferred 22lr at 50 and 100 yards is SK Long Range AFTER I have used a Neal Waltz resizing die on the ammo. The die does two things that I identify as improving the precision (no, I have no targets to demonstrate). One, resizing ensures that for 360 degrees the 22lr driving rings are a consistent 0,225 in., and two, that the rings are 0.225 in. to ensure positive contact with the rifling grooves. Someone noted in the comments "remove the wax" from the SK 22lr ammo. SK does not use a wax lube; a light oil is used as with all German manufactured 22lr's that I have experience with. CCI and Eley 22lr use a wax. Lapua and Wolf 22lr ammo are good choices too. Do not expect positive results trying to modify poor quality ammo (Winchester, Remington, etc.)
Great vid! I'm like you and love my Marlin 795 and model 60. They are so accurate out of the box and a well priced quality firearms. Marlins and the Ruger 10/22 ….get yourself one of each and you will have a lifetime of fun/quality plinking that we all will hopefully pass along to our family/friends. Thanks for sharing!
+WildAndLiving Philip didn't just thread the muzzle brake for me - he custom made it for me from scratch to match my barrel. He sent me pictures of the process. Dlask does make linear muzzle brakes, but they aren't the same diameter as my barrel.
Say Matt....I have had my FV SR for just a year & a half. Most accurate 22 I own. I put one of those after market muzzle gizmoes on it and for a long time thru all kinds of ammo, it stayed spot on POI. As of late it started loosing POI. various ammo, no better. Bum scope, nope... tried everything. Metel tape bedding, clean it more, sand bags, epoxy in stock channels, no better. When I removed the muz-brake thing it all came bak to POI with all my crap ammos. It does like the Blazer & others at that 1230 to 1260 fps. Even the red-white-blue CCI. Just a tip for ya if it breaks in and starts to hit funny places. Keep your vids coming.
I have an Mark II FV, that thing will drive tacks at 50 yds as long as I use remington gold, federal match or eley. It hates CCI, fire 3 shots and it won't extract, same with remington ammo. The stock is terrible your right about it's set for iron sights but the rifle will only take a scope. I have a Boyds At One stock on order and am waiting to get it and try it. Am shooting 100 yds and am moving out to 200 as soon as the Boyds get's here
i had the same problem, inserting a full 5 round mag on a closed bolt. I was unable. Your vid helped me a ton, but I had to file down the rear part of the follower, not the front
Did you find that putting the muzzle brake change the harmonics I put a muzzle brake on my mark 2 and it actually tighten the groups up and it was really surprising when I took it out to the range put that muzzle brake on and it tightened up the groups somehow it changed the harmonics made him better did you find the same results
How does it perform after 7 years from the release of this video? Is there any issues with it? Plan to buy the .22LR rifle and SAVAGE MARK II FV-SR - .22LR, 16.5" is the favorite. The second in the list is SAVAGE MARK II FV - .22LR, 21". Could you give me your opinion about the 21" barrel one?
Its really weird how gun culture differs just above the border. Being in the US, I think the safety is weird, but on a side that most rifles have it on. And the stock, I've always associated those with guns that require scopes. A dropped comb, like a CZ lux I've always seen associated for open sights.
I have mkii fv my question is on the back of the chamber there isn't even a break edge or a chamfer where the bullet goes into the chamber I'm wondering if that's normal or if they skipped an operation when manufacturing the gun because when I chamber a round it just scratches my bullet is it goes into the chamber period and it's a pretty deep gouge that's happening any thoughts
Bolt actions are typically more accurate while semi-autos allow you to fire more quickly. The bolt action is also usually more reliable. But then again, the semi-auto is usually more fun.
The rifle is capable of much better accuracy than you're getting at 50 yards, so you should examine the limiting factor here, the target stuff should shoot better. Your horizontal spread indicates inconsistent trigger pull. Make sure you're putting the trigger on the first pad of your index finger, not the groove, and try for the feeling of pulling straight back, don't simply close your finger like you're making a fist...
I agree. The group with the premium ammo was a horizontal line. That usually means wind. 22LR is very sensitive to wind. If there was any wind AT ALL you see it... So a flat line is as good as it gets.
Groups looks like you move your head on the scope because the chick rest is just not there and your scope shifts zero every time your eye position is not in the same spot. (my opinion)
You need to remove the baseplate which will allow the spring and follower to be removed. Be sure to note the orientation of the spring so you can re-assemble it the same way. Trim an 1/8th of an inch or so off the follower leg and re-assemble. Removing the baseplate is probably the hardest part. It doesn't look like it can be removed, but it can if you apply enough force. Just be sure not to bend anything.
If you can get ahold of it try geco bolt action ammo. Or federal gold metal match sub sonic. I used the gokd metal in my trr-sr and at 25 yards it it shot a perfect one .22cal hole with 3 shots. With the geco bolt action ammo im shooting around half an inch at 50yards and everything else seems tonbe shooting between 3\4 -1.5 inches. My marlin xt22 shoots everything around 3/4 at 50.
Bull barrel. It's a thicker barrel, typically with no taper from front to back. It stiffens the barrel and allows it to absorb more heat before warping to improve accuracy.
It's the shooter not the gun cuz it looks like you have a reasonable expensive scope , I have a squire Bingham 22 automatic with a cheap scope on it and it did very well at 60 yards
It might have been. But that being said, very soon after, I managed a sub half MOA group at 100 yards with a centrefire... I know how to shoot but maybe I was just having a bad day.
I'd take my marlin over just about any .22 out of the box. I have one with tech sights that is insanely accurate so I'm going to do another and scope this one just because
Let's recap: Don't know why the cheap ammo is shooting the same as match stuff from my mark II, nothing special rifle shoots same size group as mark II. Not rocket science, Matt, the limiting factor is you and your shooting ability. The Mark II is way more capable than .7 inches at 50 yards. The upside? At least you're consistent in your shooting, now go back and learn what you're doing wrong.
I agree, the MkII SHOULD definitely be capable of way more. Perhaps I got a lemon. I shoot competitively BTW and regularly print groups at 100 yards of less than a half inch with rifles and ammo that are capable.
The fact that Savage insists on putting that style butt on their rifles has been the reason I don't have one. Come on, savage, get a new stock designer. Pathetic!
Actually it doesn't. It means synthetic stock. savagearms.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/214237303-What-do-the-letters-in-the-Savage-Arms-model-names-mean-
Free float it. Take a dowel and wrap sandpaper around it, sand away the stock's barrel groove until you have about 3/32 inch clearance around the barrel. The stock is not so flexible that it will touch over that distance in normal use, and you save about as much money as the cost of the rifle, as the aftermarket stocks are way overpriced. Savage also makes this rifle with the Boyd stock or a look alike, cheaper than going through Boyd.

You should try the least expensive ammo ever.. the 22 thunderbolt. My FV loves them. With clover leafs consistently except the occasional flyers..

+snake Easter there is no recoil? It's .22lr

Blazer works well in my FVSR as well...now the green tags are friggin tac drivers.. but sooo expensive

This rifle is similar to the 93r17 model?

Ya... that doesn't sound right to me. You should probably get that checked out.
The scope says Simmons but it looks exactly like a Bushnell AR-22 drop zone scope exactly
What scope bases did you use? I can't stand the full length rail it comes with.
I don't remember. I think I just googled low profile scope rails for Savage MkII.
Proud to be Canadian!!!
Mine has a shorter bolt handle and i keep placing the rifle on safe by accident while manipulating the bolt
+craigm95100 Interesting. I never thought of that. I wonder if that's why they enlarged it for this model...?
craigm95100 I do that with my old Canadian Lakefield mk2. I have 3 savage bolt 22s but only engage my safety on the lakefield
What would be the advantage of a bolt action such as your savage, over a semiautomatic? Thanks.
Bolt actions are typically more accurate while semi-autos allow you to fire more quickly. The bolt action is also usually more reliable. But then again, the semi-auto is usually more fun.
Is the Mark II G 22LR is a good rifle too?
+pierre1122 Yes it is. Any Savage rifle is a good rifle.
Thank you. Have a good day ! Good video.
Try an add on cheek weld or aftermarket stock.
Rifle capable or .5 in. or less at 50 yards
Joe Gondo These rifles are capable of 5/8 inch at 100 yards. I have one.
Scope rings?
Agreed the Marlins 16 micro groove bbl is old reliable. Nice savage fvsr too btw.

Subsonic target ammo is not very wind sensitive at 50 yards.
chuck wood At a local .22 rim fire shoot the wind was moving the projectiles 2 inches at fifty yards. Steady 20 mph with gusts to 35.
Where did you pick this up? Ive been looking for this rifle!
Also im in Alberta
Just got one at Walmart in indy, 160 bucks June 12 22
Groups looks like you move your head on the scope because the chick rest is just not there and your scope shifts zero every time your eye position is not in the same spot. (my opinion)
What Simmons scope do you have on this rifle?
+Christian Raith I'm not sure of the line but it's a 3-9x40SP.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have the same magazine problem. but how do I do what you did with it?
You need to remove the baseplate which will allow the spring and follower to be removed. Be sure to note the orientation of the spring so you can re-assemble it the same way. Trim an 1/8th of an inch or so off the follower leg and re-assemble.

what is a bulb barrel (or bowl barrel?)?
Bull barrel.
It's a thicker barrel, typically with no taper from front to back.
It stiffens the barrel and allows it to absorb more heat before warping to improve accuracy.
Does this use the same magazine as the savage 22lr semi auto?
No it doesn't. It'd be cool if it did though.
You poor, poor canadians
It has since gotten much, much worse...
Maxime Carrier OIC
What the heck was savage thinking with the safety and stock? Sounds like they put the gun together in 5 mins and took it to market
What’s wrong with the safety? It’s a standard push-to-fire setup.
Mine is a 10 round clip
Love mine

Acceptable? You could do that with a slingshot.
Yeah slingshots from the year 3000 lol
I think they are banned in California
Rifle top savage 22lr bolt-t action 👍👍👍👏👏👏
The fact that Savage insists on putting that style butt on their rifles has been the reason I don't have one. Come on, savage, get a new stock designer. Pathetic!
I am sorry you can only have a 22! Must suck!
the f means fluted barrel
Actually it doesn't. It means synthetic stock.
savagearms.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/214237303-What-do-the-letters-in-the-Savage-Arms-model-names-mean-
No it doesn't....
shitty stock. thats the problem. not stiff enough. upgrade
