  • I have been extremely tired and beat down lately. You can see it in my face. This job kicked my butt and so many things about it did not go well. I almost didn't upload this footage, but if you take anything away from it let it be this: everybody struggles. Sometimes all you can do is keep going, put one foot in front of the other.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoy my video and would like to say thanks you can now buy me a coffee! This will just help me to be supported while I continue to make these videos for everyone to enjoy. Cheers to all my wonderful subscribers! www.buymeacoffee.com/JohnsFur...

    My dear Trena,
While we are not close friends, we are fans and a support group of sorts in your life, we are sensitive to your shift in mood or, as you have said, the strain and tiredness that comes with the day-to-day struggles with life. It may seem that we can be demanding. But remember that these videos are our connection to you. It is like waiting on a letter from home, and no pressure is intended. The first time I laid eyes on you last year, I was gobsmacked. You remind me of the qualities my own daughter possesses. You are steadfast. You love your family fiercely. You are a hard worker. And you are clear-headed. Yet, even so, you are human and will tire from time to time. Add to that the stress and strain of a life lived, and that can drain you. It is not for us to know the particular of your life. But be assured that you are cared for, even loved, in this community. As a Christian pastor, I have added you and all those I watch on UA-cam to my prayer list. I know, a stranger praying for you, but that is my call. I pray for all that I meet and for all those I counsel. It is not a bad thing having someone care for you along those lines. My own mother prayed for her children daily, and I can tell you that we all miss it in our lives. All this is to assure you, as a human being, that you are cared for by this community. We thank you for all you do. We stand with you in this time of need and rest.
    Blessings,
    Rev. Jim Deese

I started refinishing furniture at age 13 in 4-H and continued til age 70! Remember when everybody was painting and glazing furniture in the 60’s and 70’s? I did that, too. The days before chalk paint. I painted my kitchen walls red and glazed and antiqued with black. It was stunning to say the least! Later I wallpapered one wall in the master bath with aluminum foil sheets. I’ve done it all. Now I watch the younger generation on UA-cam!

After all, all the memories that that piece has are held within every fibre of it's body, as soon as you start replacing bits you start loosing it's soul. Also that's the easy way out and I know you like a challenge. 🤗👍 Definitely a FUBAR day!

I get asked that same question all the time: “ Why spend all that’s time fixing the broken piece when it would be easier to make a new piece and nobody would know the difference?” For me the answer is; Historical integrity. The more of the original you have, the closer you are to what the original piece of furniture was when it was created 150, 200, 250 years ago. Not to mention if it is done right it maintains a higher value if your customer ultimately decides to sell the piece. Keep doing it right.

Old pieces of furniture are like old people. All individuals moulded by their journey through life. It can hardly be a surprise that some turn out to be a bit grumpy and taciturn. A washstand would be the worst. It’s seen folk at the end of the day, stood by as they scrubbed off dirt & sweat & tears. Been spilled on, messed on. Had baby poop, sick, blood, all sorts of gunk smeared on it. It’s entitled to a little grump.
By the way, a Scottish thing to do. A superstition. If you have two mishaps: break a glass, spill a drink… go outside and break a twig. Things come in threes. You are making up the three. It lets the bad luck go.
I love your channel. I love to watch your hands at work, so soothing. Whilst you woodwork, I stitch. Together we create. I just love the way you just say”mmmm.. need new fancy handles, I’ll just make some. “ Oops. Lathe broken. Repositioned motor. I could hear the tears of frustration in your voice. You are such a trooper. I personally blame the weather. Rainy days are the worst. 😊❤❤❤

I keep thinking to myself:- This lady is really skilled. I am technically inclined and find pleasure and relaxation in watching you restore precious pieces of wooden art. I completely identify with Rev Jim Deese and agree to what he said. A silent thought I had was just this:- The restoration makes the project absolutely beautiful but it will never be new again. Hi Trena. Yeah I know what you mean by having a bad day. But in the end you nailed it. No stain on that wash stand was the right thing to do.
Early in the video I was almost laughing... you can never have too many clamps!
I wish I could help with the turning. I may not be the best but I love to turn.
You are a winner!!! Keep on going!

Beautiful as always. The first thing I ever refinished was a family wash stand. I learned from a professional. I refinished, not restored. I leave marks and small gouges because I like the character. Many family pieces since then and some just really nice unfinished furniture. I marvel at your skills and talent. I’m always so happy to see your videos. I have been down the road of depression and recovered with help. It is hard. You have to give it time but work at it. Bless you.

WOW! What an amazing outcome! Your patience in working with this piece was unreal. I don't know how you did it, but I imagine it comes from the love you have in saving beautiful pieces like this one. Thank you for showing us what loving can accomplish, even with furniture!

Here I was building a set of oak Mission/Arts & Crafts end tables cutting the upper front rails. I'd reserved special oak for these pieces. I proceeded to cut the top rail tenons and I did it WRONG 3 times in a row, which consumed all of the reserved oak. The only time I threw a piece of oak across my shop. So, I loaded my pipe, left the shop and did something else for the day. The tables now sit in my living room.

The best off having a bad day is that it will pass away, and remember not every day is a Sunday...the furniture however is looking marvelous !! When I have a day like the one you had, I do a reset. I go back to bed for a couple of hours and always wake up different. If I don't, everything I touch turns to crap. Sleep is an active process, sometimes I wake up wrong. The bad day is an "energy thing", a bad vibe if you will, and it doesn't seem to go away for me until I sleep it off, so I just take a nap.

Thanks for inspiring with your gumption and perseverance! I'm plenty familiar with those days when normally reliable tools and processes - even gravity itself - seem to conspire against you all at once, and you do just wanna crawl back in bed and wait for the curse to pass.
That natural bright deep colour at the end along with the marble is so pretty! Something quite noble and sturdy about this finished piece - you made it so handsome.

It is 19th century in 18th century style, not 17th century. The extra hole at the side front by the towel rails sometimes accommodated a hook on old pieces for either a wash cloth or hooked brush etc.

Hi Trena. For all the issues you had trying to get it right, I think it came out beautifully. Props to you. My guess on the extra side holes, perhaps at some point, someone attached a modern towel bar to the base. Just a WAG, but you made it look like new again. Thanks for an amazing job, and bounce back with that wonderful smile we love seeing. - Dave & Amy

I live in Belgium...and indeed the marble tops on antiques just sit on top....however, I did glue a small top on a night stand that was in my daughter's room so she didn't knock it off.
