  • Off-set retainer pin is from Galloway Precision. Hopeful that the correct length gas tube will allow full functionality using lower powered surplus NATO 7.62x51mm. About to find out soon!

    I am so glad I watched this a couple of weeks ago. Have a new LR308 chambered in 300 Win Mag. They test fired it at the factory. Three shots. And three small dings in the buffer. It barely contacts the BCG. Ordered an off set pin today. Thanks,

    Great job ! I`m not an expert but you did tackle the the right beast most people would have never figured it was the gas tube. My only thinking is to my knowledge Nato is supposed to be a slight hotter than commercial ammo making me think the ammo is degraded from age or storage. But even so with the adjustable gas block the rifle should be able to cycle the lower powered ammo so again Great Job , I do enjoy your videos as these kind do help us in the community to do some learning.

      For 5.56 NATO yes, for 7.62X51 no. The 223 is less pressure than 5.56 NATO and 308 is hotter than 7.62X51 NATO. They are opposite..

    • @peteregger7928

      Thanks gun fisher! M80 ball NATO 7.62x51 is a lighter load than most commercial 308 which is the opposite of 5.56 NATO vs 223. As you're saying though it could be an even lighter load as the surplus I have is 40 plus years old. I have a crap load of it so really wanting this rifle to be able to run it. My goal is to get this rifle to run on anything with the option to turn the gas down on hotter stuff. I'm hoping the correct gas tube does the trick. I can still go a little lighter on the buffer with what I have and there's two more options left. The first is I may have more adjustability on the RifleSpeed than I originally thought and the last resort is open up the gas port size on the barrel. Really trying to avoid that last one though!

    Looking forward to your progress, I'm shopping for a barrel now, and I'm considering a Wilson because of my past history with them on my 300BO. Runs flawless, amazingly accurate 50 yards, and in is all I shoot with it.
    I considered JP and Krieger, but I don't think I will shoot 308 enough to justify the cost of their barrels.

      @peteregger7928  Рік тому

      I have only done some function testing with the rifle so far but I did shoot a few rounds for accuracy at 100 yards and it looked to be sub MOA. JP and Kreiger make fine barrels but like you're saying pricey. I believe Kreiger is one of the start up founders for Criterion Barrels. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I bought a complete PSA .308 upper receiver , its a nice looking 18" upper, you know, you get what you pay for, Still haven't had it to the range but one thing i did notice is the firing pin really kisses the primer, i mean to the point i find it hard to believe the rifle didn't go off when i chambered a round, after noticing I'm little fearful to chamber a round / let the bolt go forward. i think i might end up taking the same road you did just breaking down doing a from scratch build.

      Just recently watched a newer video that's out but have forgotten the channel name. He was testing out his new Aero Precision Creedmoor and it went off when he used the bolt release! You could see that his finger was not on the trigger. He was showing the unfired primers after just chambering. Similar to what your'e saying they were getting hit hard and I was surprised that he wasn't having more unintentional discharges during chambering. He was also thinking that it might be ammunition but I'm not sure about that after seeing his primers! Don't know if you have checked your firing pin protrusion specification on the bolt but I would start there. I'm also using a "High Pressure" bolt and firing pin to avert other problems that can occur with a standard bolt and firing pin on these large caliber AR's. Wilson Combat, Odin Works and JP Enterprises are a few off the top of my head that sell them.

      Here is a laugh for you !
      I had my AR 10 bolt get stick not all the way locked into the barrel extension on a chambered round in the chamber the problem to get it unstuck I thought was take the upper off the lower receiver and fiddle with it to get the bolt out - well nothing worked So I thought to strike the back of the bolt carrier with a wrench to get the bolt closed and fire off the round in the chamber by putting the upper back on the lower and shooting- CRAZY Here ! hitting the back of the bolt carrier using the wrench set off the cartridge from Kinetic energy of the firing pin hitting the cartridge primer when the bolt locked into the barrel extension sending the bolt carrier 30 feet away and no idea where the spend cartridge went.

      @@lurebenson7722 Ha! Ha! Damn! Possible design flaw by Eugene. My FNFAL firing pins have "anti-slam fire" springs on the firing pin. I have often noticed on my AR-15's light primer strikes from just chambering! Slam fire on an AR platform is extremely rare even with the softer commercial primers vs NATO.

    When u run that Company adjustable gas system they tell u about the gas length issues

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  11 місяців тому

      Yes! They tell you that depending on what you're building you may have to go with a custom length but they don't always tell you what the length should be. 15.400" is Armalite spec. I was able to go with 15.500" on this DPMS pattern build and went with 15.400" on my second build although I could have also went with the 15.500". Your build may be different.

      Probably should but I never have! Since the early 90's I have never had one come loose on an AR-15 so long as they were properly torqued. We'll see if the 308 is any different? It's good insurance and easy to do though so why not! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I build and sell specialty AR 10 uppers for sale in WSM magnums so what I am using for gas tubes is White Oak 18-5-inch gas tubes with 25-5 inch or 26-inch Pac Nor super match barrels I send to Mark Manson in Arizona for finish work such as machining for threading for barrel extension - chambering - gas block machining & gas port hole drilling after receiving the barrels from Pac Nor.
    I am using these long gas tubes to delay bolt opening under extreme pressure.
    I do own an AR 10 upper in 308 but all of my loads are max charged reloads so I wouldn't see the issue this AR owner is having with military ammo.
    The reloads I fire are so pressured up the buffer coming back sounds like it is going to come out the back of the buffer tube!
    I must be using reload 308s pumped up to mid 30-06 loads !

      Sounds like your the next level up! I have both of my LR308 builds now running 100% using very low powered Hirtenbeger NATO which I believe is lower powered than my South African. A chronograph would be helpful but just going by feel. I don't run a can or use subsonic but I think I may have selected the right RifleSpeed plungers to run that too! What buffer tube depth and buffer length is that? Because I’ve heard of people switching from 7” to 7.25” tube depth, using short 2.5” buffers and it solved their short stroking issues. Drop your buffer into the tube. Drop the bcg in too. Bolt shoulder should just about reach the tube opening.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  4 місяці тому

      Not sure about 7.25"? The only dimensions I'm familiar with are 7.00" which is MilSpec and the A5 which comes in at 7.625" (5/8") or 7.750" (3/4"). I have done some more recent videos changing both my LR308's over to the A5 tubes (7.750") using "Heavy Buffers" carbine length at 8.5oz and 308 rifle length springs. The set-up in this video was the 7.00" MilSpec tube using an Aero Precision Stubby 308 buffer and their 308 carbine spring. This did not work for these rifles causing high velocity BCG issues which I had incorrectly diagnosed as short stroking and was causing buffer tube damage. Both the Aero Precision 308 carbine springs and 3.8oz stubby buffers and the damaged tube are in the trash.
