      If you haven't tried it yet, iRacing excels in the actual racing. Once you get past the rookie stage (which isn't hard), the racing is really good and people (usually) aren't idiots crashing all over the place. There will still be crashes, but I've seen races in iRacing that are cleaner than real-world races.

    Also, the DW12 is around the same speed as the DP01, which I don't think anyone would call slow. If power increases as they plan, we at least have a fast ugly pig. Honda and Chevy can and will make more power if they are allowed to, heck, it's probably an ECU mapping away with ease.
    The big thing with me though is it's so damn slow on a big oval due to having it's power cut to slow it down, which, well... we have to get used to it. 240 isn't "safe" in this age. :(
    Fast enough on a road course.

      Then how does Pocono not have 6 corners? How does something like the Dogleg at Phoenix not count for anything? What about D / quad ovals?

  • @TripSpeedGT

    The tire stagger (the tires on the right have a larger diameter) helps the car turn left better, but it means it would also want to turn left if he held the wheel straight, and he therefore needs to turn it slightly to the right to keep the car going straight.

    They can further reduce drag on the chassis and sidepods by "dimpling" the surface like a golf ball. It's been shown to increase fuel efficiency in cars by 2-3Mpg. At a track like Road America, or the 500 at Indianapolis, that could make a huge difference in pit stop strategy.

    I'm new to racing Sims and haven't gotten a wheel yet. Can't wait to get one. Why is the in-game wheel turned to the left but the car is still going straight. Is it a custom setting you changed?

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  10 років тому +16

      No, it's because of the car setup. The car is naturally setup to turn left on an oval so it's as fast as it can go through the corners to keep up the average speed, so you need to hold the wheel against that left pull to go straight.
      iRacing now however offers a setup option to make the wheel straight while going straight even with the left turn bias. That's basically putting the wheel on crooked so it's straight, something routinely done in the real world.

    As for the last incident I'd class it as a racing incident. If you were in a real car, or even a 3 monitor setup, you'd likely have seen him but in that situation he was in your blind spot, and you were close to his (he still had room to go high to avoid if he'd seen you). Yeah it's a sucky way to end a race but it wasn't intentional so I'd have let it go if I were in his position but nice to see you take responsibility too

    The DW12 uses ground effects. They have Venturi tunnels just like Champ Cars, and a rear diffuser. They are flatter than CART and Champ Car's rides, which is why they go airborne so easily, but they still produce significant ground effects DF. How can catching air so easily be considered "safe?"

    I like this car/track combo, you never know what you'll get. Of my three races here: first one was clean for me, but we spent more time under yellow than actually racing; in the second, I got run over on the very first lap while slowing down for a huge wreck in T2 and couldn't continue; in the third, we only had one caution, but I saw someone crash so hard in T1 that the CrashMechanix™ actually vaulted him over the outside fence and there was no caution consequently LMFAO

    I'm not talking about a decade old car with an engine just as old. The "Swift 017.n" was developed in 2009 and continues development with Formula Nippon, today! It has much better aerodynamic performance characteristics than the DW12 which surprised the shit out of them with all the extra drag it produces.

    Did a few races with indicars on roadtracks - worst drivers I have ever experienced in online racing. 2-3 good&fast racers, the rest of the field could not get one single lap straight. So the only thing I had to do in order to get to top 3 position is staying out of troubles and doing consistent laps.

    Brack survived his crash in Texas, Wheldon had a similar crash at Vegas but hit in a different manner, that the car would never fix without a roof. I don't even need to mention Fontana in 1999.
    Safe is not auto racing. Bouncing cars or not, it's still hugely dangerous. The cars aren't bunny hopping on ovals, the racing has been as clean as ever even on street courses. Are there still steps left? Of course. To go faster you have to be safer first though in this world.

    Amen to that! Still the sexiest and manliest downforce oriented open wheel cars IMHO.
    V8? Check. Turbo? Check. No paddles? Check. Ground effects? Check. Stacked field of drivers? Check. Looks like it will do 240 MPH? Check. Does 240 MPH? Check. Big slicks for everyone to see? Check.
    Sadly, I don't think that will ever happen, I doubt de Ferran's record will be broken anytime soon. How Tony won... I know how, but I still don't see how - if you catch my wall of boost induced drift.

    I think it is 50/50. One thing I was always taught is if a driver shows you his fender you are the one that needs to back down. You were clearly passing him, and there was no reason for him to be trying to defend a spot that was already lost. That was a give and take situation in which he did not give and you took. 50/50 in my opinion

    Champcars used ground effects, the Indycars are flat bottomed. It was more important to keep a consistent ride height with the champcars as that was a very large chunk of downforce. Totally different setup approach.

    Newman/Haas would have a lot of pull, especially since it's what the fans wanna see. Since the Swift is used by a specs series too, it would also be cheap to buy and upgrade. Within the rules. Nippon is a series that evolved FROM Formula 1. I think seeing a Champ Car like ride in the field would bring a lot more attention to Indycar. With enough fan support and enough other teams beginning to use the Swift, other's might get in on the action and they might actually change (cont.)

  • @TacticalCardboard

    I'm not gonna start with the "NASCAR/Ovals require no skill" bull, because it's a plainly stupid belief, but really when I see indycars driving around in ovals it feels weird.. Those cars are made for much more than that and will shine on a proper track. Why not take some big engine car with a low degree heavy wheel that is specifically made for ovals? Just my 2c, good vid.

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  9 років тому +13

      Indycars weren't made for ovals? I think the "Indy" part of "Indycar" is pretty much a dead giveaway they belong on the ovals as much as they belong on the road courses!

    • @SaladFingers_
      @SaladFingers_ 9 років тому +1

      Empty Box Well I'm not very sure about the root of the actual word, English isn't my first language. My point was just that these cars have such advanced aerodynamics built so the car can quickly change directions from left to right, right to left etc. I guess one point is that you need downforce to make it work best, thus speed, but I'm pretty sure much of it's aerodynamics could be simpler/more focused on oval racing if they were made for it. Again, just my 2c, not trying to argue with you or bash your video :)

      SaladFingers indy comes from Indianapolis... ¬¬

    • @SaladFingers_
      @SaladFingers_ 9 років тому

      Diego T. Fair enough, but indycars were made by open-wheel car standards. The fact that they are american ties them to a different culture than the european, one that of course includes oval tracks. But the open-wheel concept and the foundation of its aerodynamic design are more tailored to swift changes of direction while maintaining speed rather than fighting to keep it tame at top speed the whole time.

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  9 років тому +2

      SaladFingers
      Is it? The point of any race car is to go as fast as possible regardless of where.
      They have open wheels because that is how it's always been for over 100 years, it's lighter, it is what American open wheel racing is. It's like F1 (Indycar) and Sports cars (NASCAR) - you can only add so much bodywork until it becomes all the same. :)
      Don't forget though, it's not just an oval car. They bolt some road course wings on the car and go for it on anything from bumpy as heck street circuits to your smooth permanent circuits. As a fan of Indycar racing, without that huge variety it's just a random series, but because of it, it is my favorite type of racing around.

    Retooling the Lolas with Swift aero components if IZOD Indycar refuses to allow anything else. Or creating a hybrid. The Lolas were beasts on road and street courses, but the Swifts would have cleaner air. Bring the best parts of each and create a new type of car that has plentiful spare parts. Both designs are more stable than the DW, and having greater DF from the under wings would be less catastrophic with a wing failure.

    Also, Carl Haas bought up most of the rights to Lola Cars' designs and intellectual property after Lola went belly up. They could in theory, retool the Lolas from the days of Champ Car and run them. I think the rules ared only to restrict the cost, and not chassis design. Rules do or did state they could run a different chassis other than the DW12 if approved by the board. THAT is what it would take gain back fans, especially if a Swift/Lola hybrid was to dominate with an incredible driver.

      @steamyhotpoo 8 років тому +2

      +select20 I'm assuming it's so that the driver doesn't have to turn their arms quite as much when performing a turn. When going in a straight line it's not turned that much to the right. But, when turning left and the wheel is mounted to the hub completely straight it would have to be turned quite a lot. I like to think of the amount the wheel has to be turned as almost 50/50 having to turn it left and right when it is mounted asymmetrically.

    My point is, safety doesn't exist. The CART era wasn't exactly the most safe thing ever either. Yes, many of the injuries and deaths were freak things you can't expect to survive or an issue that could happen in any car, but that is where we still are and will always be.

    Not a single corner is easy flat out at Pocono. Even turn 2 here (real circuit was repaved) you have massive bumps that if hit wrong will destroy you. For an oval in an indycar, this is a driver's track. Ovals aren't road courses. Road courses aren't ovals.

  • @TacticalCardboard
    @TacticalCardboard  11 років тому

    They are / will be working on the DW12s floor to prevent sideways takeoff.
    Remember the ramp at the train tracks at San Jose? Someone deemed that "safe". Fact is as we both know racing is dangerous. "Safe" is a relative, not absolute.
    Considering how few cautions we've had with the DW12, I'd say that it can't be too bad of a car to drive. Drivers may not like it, but it certainly isn't any more dangerous than it ever was.
    It may porpoise like a bitch, but it's also 150hp slower in a straight

  • @TacticalCardboard
    @TacticalCardboard  11 років тому

    I'm not sure about that. TBH, the DW12 was the right car for the series. However, they made the wrong call with the bodywork (remember the road course body they showed off early on?) and screwed over the champ car teams who just bought the DP01 for the previous season. Considering teams already had a new car and we knew there was a new car coming in time, they should have let them run, creating the mixed chassis us CART fans loved. Would a slowed down DP01 be any worse than a Lotus engined car?

  • @TacticalCardboard

    Don't forget, Swift submitted a design as well. In all honesty, it probably lost because of it's looks being too radical. The DW12 is polarizing, their car was even worse in that regard. I understand the want to keep a spec chassis, so development is entirely controlled, but...
    CART was an arms race money pit because the manufacturers supplied it, not because it had different chassis. Competition will keep costs down more likely than not - chassis wise with capped development.

    Don't think so. It's been too long to have that sort of pull and I don't think organizing another split would happen realistically, and there just isn't anyone that interested in fielding a team in a new series with expensive cars that are hard to market.
    As for Formula 1, CART was never "supposed" to compete with F1. Even in the 90s a CART team spent next to nothing compared to an F1 car. However, it was like Group C - it was a special combo that exists at only one time, never seen again.

  • @TacticalCardboard
    @TacticalCardboard  11 років тому

    Exactly. It doesn't matter. A wreck is a wreck. You can throw your helmet at the guy's car and punch him in the face after the race, but you are still wrecked. If a guy tweaks my LR corner trying to avoid me, well, tough cookies, that's coming out of the team's pocket.
    SR is basically money. It doesnt matter - wreck is wreck. It has to be no fault. Example, I'm saying I wrecked half the field here and a couple guys still don't think I was guilty.

    I'll just leave a comment here before it's asked... World Tour Event with this combo. Am I running it? IDK. Want to, just need to work on a setup, and P/GT... which I haven't run in too dang long. Doubt I will post it though anyways.
    Re: the real race, 220 MPH average lap in practice day 1. I have a feeling this race will be epic to watch, you should too! My prediction? Ed Carpenter and Marco duke it out, my money is on Ed. Perhaps my most anticipated race of the year!

    Also, I didn't mean the DW12 is a pig as in ugly, though it certainly is, but it is an ass heavy pig. The rear end is always trying to break lose, even on straights. Especially bumpy straight. Belle Isle looked horrible with those running around on it. Even when Champ Car ran the same bumpy tracks, the Lolas NEVER caught air or bounced around as much as the DW12. How is that safer? The Dallaras back flip at the slightest disruption! Champ Cars stayed planted to the ground except in extremes.

    Do they have push to pass in iracing indy?

  • @GeneralKenobiSIYE
    @GeneralKenobiSIYE 11 років тому

    Yeah they can make more power, just not with a V6 turbo. Those things already rev really high for the pitiful amount of power they produce. They have horse power, but no torque. If they were to increase torque and HP on the V6s, they'd have a lot more blow outs. The thing CART had that IZOD and F1 didn't was competition. Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti and Emo Fittipaldi would never have driven in this series as it is. It can still be saved but fans will eventually say screw it and walk away.

    You can't choose what series to race in really. You have two sections; Road and Oval. You can race as a rookie in the Mx-5 in road and in the street stocks in rookies. You earn the license to race other series as you progress. Hope to see you on the track.

    But the Swift 017.n is not as radical as the Swift Indycar submission. It looks just like a Champ Car, with an extra aerodynamic surface in the front and more efficient wings less drag. Other than that, it is a much more conventional, and stable design. The DW12 spins out when it starts ENTERING a corner. Not at the apex or exit, at the entrance! It also shimmies down the straights! No one ever called a Champ Car "a bit of a pig." But Indycar drivers did, even is Wheldon was too nice to say so.

    Gotta listen to your spotter mate. Coming out of the turn, he said 'car outside'.
    And is the spotter talking in an Aussie accent? Sounds like western Sydney bogan

    • @forrest225
      @forrest225 10 років тому

      The spotter will say that even if you have room to move up the track. Box assumed the guy was on the outside line, but he wasn't so there was contact. No big deal, it happens.

    Awesome driving. I would have done the exact same thing, moving up to the standard line. It was your fault, but still an honest racing accident. Nothing Maldonado-ish or too aggro.

    Engines blowing up used to be somewhat common place. Now they aren't. They aren't even close to pushing what they can get out of the engine and everyone knows it.
    As for competition, well, it's been fantastic this year. No, you probably won't see those big name F1 champs come over here ever again, but it's a different time entirely. Nigel Mansell would have never had a chance of coming over here if he wanted to drive in F1 if they had the same amount of red tape back then.
