Just discovered your channel few days ago. And I love it ! I have already watched something like 20 of your videos. As a simracer and IndyCar fan it's the perfect channel for me !
Because they are now. Fixed had a purpose with the old tire model, way back years ago now. In the NASCAR cars, you used to have to run a setup so loose, you would turn RIGHT to go LEFT. It was basically drifting, driving on dirt if you will. Fixed was created to remove that element of "extreme" setups. That no longer exists. The only purpose is shorter races, which could be done easily in an open sprint / open endurance series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the drinking game, although I did it with beer shots (that's why I can still type) so I guess that does not count. Your last move was great btw, I didn't think you're gonna pull it off, but you did, hats off.
So Ppl, I don't want to start an argument here, just wanna know one thing: What makes this kinda racing attractive? For me this is just Topspeed (which is not bad) Cornering Left the whole race. Also you go that far to have positive Camber on your inside Wheels. I drove Drag, Sprint and Rally, Drifting and yes, even Nascar (But just on Watkins Glenn and Road Amerika I think). But I just do not get the Soul of this kinda stuff. Tell me pls
Akito Takagi The attraction is how equal everything is. Everyone has the opportunity to race closely, pass and defend etc. When everything is so equal you have to be consistent and hit your marks. You also need good strategy to make things happen and pick and choose your spots wisely, otherwise you could be losing a lot of position, speed and momentum. Its more difficult than it looks. I prefer road course racing but have some experience on ovals.
I've subscribed to iRacing after your videos made me take the jump. Tried it on a gamepad...it is borderline impossible. Looks like i'll be buying a wheel soon. Most expensive youtube view i ever made! :)
Oh, I miss the days of awesome... V8! Turbo! Indycars! Oh, and I agree the IRL/CART split was the worst ever. :( The DW12 can suck it... However, at INDY it actually does, well enough except for the horrid engine note. Michigan Motor Speedway was one of my faves back in the 90's. They used to top 240mph in the race!
@TheDeathViper106 its a monthly fee of 12.99 I think I pay yearly so not sure I know I pay 99 for a year to get the discount. Tracks and cars are extra but get quite a few to start with so only need to by more if you chose too
Good ol IndyCars...remembers me racing with almost 250mph (if my memory is not wrong) on Indianapolis in the early 90s (Indy500 from Papyrus)...downforce? Whats this? xD
heels yes papyrus. I wonder what ever happened to them. I interviewed to be a 3d artist at papyrus back in the day because I loved indycar racing, but I wound up going into the much more lucrative MMORPG industry.
I suck at restarts in this car... But usually can make up the time again.. Just got promoted to class C this month so have few races in this car under my belt.. Wrecked out first race then got a4th place finish from starting 15th last night.. Definitely about who holds a better line
Hey Empty Box.... what was your career path? I’d be interested in watching a video in which you talk about your career path, how you went about it. I’m interested in open wheel and GTE3. I’m still building my computer, but I’d love to hear your story for sure.
Hey Box, how come you don't do any(if u have I just haven't seen it) doing F1 races with the FW31 on iRacing? I just got into iRacing myself, and I'm waiting to get my G27 before I start putting time into it since my current wheel won't give me the precision I would need...so Idk if running the FW31s is like invite only, or some kind of league based car/class..and you can't just jump into a weekly race like u can with the other car classes, etc. I'd love to see you run the FW31 at spa/montreal
I like your videos. If I had to invest in either iRacing or rFactor, which would you recommend? Tweaking/tuning is probably most important to me as long as it's realistic.
Dave Kane invest in a wheel then go with either rfactor 2 or asetto both are cheap and both compare very close iracing in terms of realism so you cant go wrong really and once you get the feel for racing sims ask your self if iracing is worth all the money some say no some say yes but i dont think you would want to jump in straight to iracing mainly because it wouldnt be to beginer friendly and its very pricey
I was actually supposed to attend that CART race with my family.. There was no refund really wish i could've seen CART when it was around. I wonder if I got the tickets around.
GizmoMaltese you wanna be as close to the white line as possible in NASCAR to be able to drift upwards twoards the wall on exit... In formula racing it's actually varies depending on how your car is something can stay high and make up ground but usually you wanna follow the car infront of you for optimal gains
Its kinda like those Olympic running tracks, if you stay by the white line ( or on the inside ) it should be the faster "line". Some ovals youll lift or even brake. And staying in slipstream is really important ( unless thr track youre on requires braking, then i like to think its like a circuit track and slipstreaming helps but you dont really need it ). Racing line isnt really a thing ( as you just stay by the white line ) unless you actually need to do some pedal work and play with the gas or brake pedal, then youll have your turn in,apex, and track out points
GizmoMaltese white line is a shorter distance, next to the wall lets you keep revs up, you get a better run down the straights but you have to travel further distance. Depends on driver preference
Good morning sir always love watching your videos. You do a great job for the community and I really highly appreciate it I have now recently moved up to three monitors these monitors are 34-in LG ultrawide 144 Hertz g-sync I am running i7 8700 k 16 GB of RAM EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 TI graphics card I am having issues with stretching on the right and left hand monitor I've tried to render it in the app of iRacing gx11 graphics I just can't get it the images are fish-eyed or stretched to me they look stretched I have called iRacing they've tried to help but they don't have 3 screen monitors at their stations is the way I take it everybody tells me it can be fixed but I'm not sure what I am doing apparently is there any way that you could give me the right numbers to put into the graphics part of iRacing to fix this problem or give me any suggestions thanks again for all that you do for this iRacing Community I hope to hear from you soon and have a good day sir
I completely agree with you about CART and Texas Motor Speedway, our family was going to make a 12hr drive to go see, I'm glad we didn't....and the DW12 looks like a UFO piece of crap
Empty Box are you using fraps to record and if so how much does FPS drop when you turn it on? My computer is no slouch but when I turn on Fraps my FPS go from 85-100 down to 30.
I agree, it would be nice to see IndyCar pushing 240 again. (Just, don't go back to MIS. Not only would it be too dangerous, but, drivers did not like racing there.)
Yes, I have a video on that topic from a few years back if you want more info why. It's because the car is wholly setup to turn left - camber, suspension, ride heights, cross weights, stagger, "fighting" the car to make it go straight is less detrimental than scrubbing more speed in the corners.
Announcer: GREEN GREEN GREEN EB: WHOOOOHOOOOOO!!! Announcer: the Yellow flag is out.... love your racing dude watching you blows my mind... but omg there are some terribad people out there lol
This is as bad as Talladega in a fixed truck race. Thank goodness the DW12 has been nothing like this at Charlotte or Atlanta so far. Should be fine at Texas too.
The sound guy was / is Australian. I think he might have been fired a while back and now working for pCars if I got my story straight. Or something like that.
How can you say that indycar racing hasn't been exciting since the 90's… Indycar was at its peak from 2001-2006 when you had young versions of Castroneves, Kanaan, Weldon, Franchitti, Dixon, Hornish, Sharp all racing together some of the best drivers in the world
Compare anything in the 90s (literally anything) to anything in the early 00s IRL part. In the 90s you had those same teams, some of the same drivers, some legends of the sport and the fastest race cars ever raced on a regular basis here in North America on both road courses and ovals - as it should be. Once the big teams went over to the IRL side, the names were gone from Champ Car for sure. However, Helio, Tony and Dario were all CART drivers before they drove in the IRL. Dixon was also the 2001 rookie of the year interestingly enough in CART on top of far more names than you can list in addition to that! Even in that same era an obliterated and depleted CCWS had Bourdais, Power, Timo Glock (I almost forgot about him), da Matta, Allmendinger and Paul Tracy. It wasn't terrible terrible, but it paled in comparison. IRL "winning" the split was as much due to CART/CCWS failing to keep with the times as much as anything, not due to the product.
For those of you unaware of what happened at Las Vegas in 2011, Dan Wheldon was killed in a wreck that occurred within the first few laps. After the wreck words started to circulate that the car was too fast for the track and was unsafe but Indy Car went on with the race due to publicity. Wheldon was running in the race to try and win prize money for a charity. Only stipulation was that he had to start at the back of the pack. The crash occurred in front of him, and simply couldn't slow down fast enough. His car flew into the fence, caught fire, and shredded into pieces. The following year they started running the DW12, the car Wheldon had been testing for Indy Car to make the racing more safe.
It wasn't just after the race, the concerns were brought up before the race as well. Rather than the usual 24 or so cars, they had 30? or so on a similar track.
Because of all the testing Wheldon had been doing on the new car, and because he'd been a champion of safety for the drivers (one of the reasons he was really involved in the new car), They named the car after him. DW12 = Dan Wheldon 12
Grabbing 6th is a good way to lose your run even quicker. It's rarely useful in tight packs, it's really only usable when you have a car gaping you up the road where you get a huge run going.
Empty Box yeah, I’m not a big follower of Indy, mainly F1, and the more videos I watch, the ratios between 4th, 5th, and 6th are so close that unless you were at a track like Talladega (which Idk if Indy even runs there) 6th seems useless. I do watch the Indy 500, and I know the actual cars go 5-6th and vice versa several times a lap, so I guess it would all depend upon your aero package in determining if getting into 6th would even be worth it. Long time real racing fan, iracing n00b, sorry for doubting you man! Especially after watching your Formula Renault 2.0 20-5th run, shit was EPICCCC bro!!!
It really does depend on the gearing, it's all really, really, really customizable (like... there are ways to change your gearing by 100 RPM), but I run the fixed series generally in this car so you get what they give you. Some tracks you pull 6th regularly, some not so much. Indy in general is a bit different though as the corners are relatively tight and the straights are quite long, so it's more common to need 2 gears. Just one of those things you learn with these types of cars, there aren't many cars you want to be right at the edge of banging it off the limiter with no intentions of shifting.
Hey you got your wish on cars getting faster at Indy at least. with the avg. speed for pole being 230.760 with the fastest single lap speed being 241.637
CART could have survived without Indy, it just needed to survive until today. Now the 500 is a whatever race to the public mainstream. There were a number of factors, another one being Tobacco money as well which everyone knew was going to be vanishing soon just like in Europe. Wouldn't need a slow car if they didnt insist on putting these cars where they don't belong, just like 2001, just like 2011. Flat tracks ftw.
You say it's easy to start/restart this car. Now it's part of the baseline content and I actually have it, I get dumped every time. Maybe I'm too cautious I don't know.
got my new computer today. im almost set to go racin'. i couldnt find a damn wheel in this wasteland that i live in so i had to order it from amazon. it should be here tuesday. gonna start kickin' ass then!
Nope. This car was really frustrating to race as there was no aero push, there was no lifting, there was just "brick the throttle, turn left and hug the white line". It gets to ya. lol Thankfully the DW12 is about a 1000% more fun to race.
Because racing 6" away from a certain DNF is more fun than banging doors in cars going half the speed that bounce off each other like nothing happened.
C'mon now, half the speed? WTCC regularly gets up to 150+ mph, depending on the circuit. And "bouncing off each other like nothing happened" isn't exactly accurate either. They suffer damage from that stuff. Aerodynamics, tires, suspension, etc. ... All of which affects the drive-ability and speed of the cars. ... In WTCC "push to pass" has a LOT more physical of a meaning LOL There's a lot more actual racing going on in WTCC than in oval tracks. Oval track is just really fast rush-hour traffic. :P
That overtake at the end was pretty sweet!
Also that netcode fail was terrible, that green guy up top got shafted.
Holy shit it’s the LAD HIMSELF
Who
wow
JIMMEE
I've worked "testicular fortitude" into my conversation as much as I can ever since this video, not sure how many times I've watched this race but I'll continue to. Empty Box is the GOAT💯🖤
Step 1: Grow some balls
Step 2: Go high
Step 3: Pass cars
Step 4: High five
Dusty Peterson hahahahahahahahahah so funny step 1
Don't know why this is in my recommended, but man this video is an absolute classic. Back when I thought my life was going somewhere lol.
1:28 "once you get 8000RPM back off the throttle...." continues up to around 10.000RPM throughout most of the game.
lol!
I'm pretty sure he meant that on restarts, or 1st gear. High RPM in 1st gear=wheelspin. He was doing around 10000RPM but in 5th gear.
Fr tho i thought same thing, and also that incident he was talking about, was that a real or fake incident 😂😂

WHO TF LIKED THIS. this is so incorrect
i race some sims but not one sim driver needs balls to do what they do, i respect the real drivers that have actual balls
i play some shooters but not one cod player needs balls to do what they do, i respect the real soldiers that have actual balls
i watch some porn.....
Malaasoy NeedforSpeed yes the risk of life loss is non existent in sum racing. It still gets your heart rate moving.
botscoolnesss now dems balls
Gavin, you need balls for that.
not to make you feel old but i used to watch you as a kid
I looked at this leaderboard, and saw that my friend Dale Reynolds was in this race.
8:01 "I am channeling my inner Ed Carpenter right now" - Best Line ever!

Great race Matt, entertaining and informative as always, keep it up. :)
So Ppl, I don't want to start an argument here, just wanna know one thing: What makes this kinda racing attractive? For me this is just Topspeed (which is not bad) Cornering Left the whole race. I just don’t get why guys like you have sex with other guys, but I don’t have any urge to post the question on a forum.
Akito, you crazy old homo, you!! Trolling for young meat again, I see.
A simple mind like yours could never understand oval racing.
It's not attractive. That's why it's only an american thing.
23, that's beautiful. Thanks for posting that for us.
The cart series was the best open wheel to watch, we went to the cleveland grand prix every year
Ahh this was my first empty box video.. I remember this one fondly

Michigan Motor Speedway was one of my faves back in the 90's. They used to top 240mph in the race!
The 2015 Indy Lights car rendering looks awesome. I hope that IndyCar also follows the same style in the near future.
No way this video is 6 years old! UA-cam recommendations making me feel old!

I don't understand oval racing. What's the key to being fast? Do you have to ease off the throttle? Is there some ideal line?
GizmoMaltese you wanna be as close to the white line as possible in NASCAR to be able to drift upwards twoards the wall on exit... GizmoMaltese white line is a shorter distance, next to the wall lets you keep revs up, you get a better run down the straights but you have to travel further distance. Depends on driver preference

is blake using a controller or something? looks like the front wheels are very jittery.
Damn, it wasn't until you said draftfest 2013 that I realized this is almost a 5 year old video. Still interesting to watch.
Love the 6 sentence long 1.5 second long annotations
Yes, entire field. In MC races I'm pretty sure it is 10 cars though.
22:19 that voice crack. lol

By the way, nice pass on there 23 at the end. High line baby!
Why do you have to steer right to go in a straight line? Does the car go left by itself?

Robert Medina may be safe but it's fast lol
High in low out this is the basics of the oval go ahead stay high if you want you'll never get anywhere
does iracing have A.I. or is it online versus only?

Just one of those things you learn with these types of cars, there aren't many cars you want to be right at the edge of banging it off the limiter with no intentions of shifting.
I watched two videos of you racing. You drive a little to safe. And stay on the end dude.
How many G's are pulled going around these corners
At the speed he is going. (Around 215 Mph) I'd say anywhere from 2.75 to near 4.00 G's
I would like iRacing, but I couldn't afford a subscription.
go round and round, and round again.
#2 car, Ben Dover can't be a real name. Is it? Like Bend Over? Com'on man, Someone's parents are trolls.
Lol
Over The Limit Gaming I had a friend named Liz dover, her brother legit changed his name to ben.
Limit, bend over and take it like a man.
Your next post will probably claim that there couldn’t have been a driver named Will Power.
Hey you got your wish on cars getting faster at Indy at least. with the avg. speed for pole being 230.760 with the fastest single lap speed being 241.637
the turn left simulator
lol at the start you actually sounded drunk
Or it was your normal voice 3 years ago?
Different mic.
24:07 lol The crash in the mirror.
2:08 = mfw you use the mushroom in Mario Kart
CART could have survived without Indy, it just needed to survive until today. Now the 500 is a whatever race to the public mainstream. There were a number of factors, another one being Tobacco money as well which everyone knew was going to be vanishing soon just like in Europe.
Wouldn't need a slow car if they didnt insist on putting these cars where they don't belong, just like 2001, just like 2011. Flat tracks ftw.
You say it's easy to start/restart this car. Now it's part of the baseline content and I actually have it, I get dumped every time. Maybe I'm too cautious I don't know.
got my new computer today. im almost set to go racin'. i couldnt find a damn wheel in this wasteland that i live in so i had to order it from amazon. it should be here tuesday. gonna start kickin' ass then!
we're u drunk?
Nope. This car was really frustrating to race as there was no aero push, there was no lifting, there was just "brick the throttle, turn left and hug the white line". It gets to ya. lol
Thankfully the DW12 is about a 1000% more fun to race.
Miles Keaton we oxfordplain
i had to actively stop myself from watching 25 mins of someone driving in a circle. ugh
who is CART
Epic stuff.
Needs a Paul Tracy button. You press it and cause a big wreck then you attack somebody.
6:23 I miss cart/champcar to
it boggles my mind that you enjoy this, yet find WTCC boring LOL
Because racing 6" away from a certain DNF is more fun than banging doors in cars going half the speed that bounce off each other like nothing happened.
C'mon now, half the speed? WTCC regularly gets up to 150+ mph, depending on the circuit.
And "bouncing off each other like nothing happened" isn't exactly accurate either. They suffer damage from that stuff. Aerodynamics, tires, suspension, etc. ... All of which affects the drive-ability and speed of the cars. ... In WTCC "push to pass" has a LOT more physical of a meaning LOL
There's a lot more actual racing going on in WTCC than in oval tracks. Oval track is just really fast rush-hour traffic.
:P
Same could be said for WTCC racing.
uh ... okay >.>
artao5 WTCC is boring so is FIA GT1 ALMS or Tudor is much better.
DW12 clocks in at damn near 240 on large ovals like Indy, don't know what you're talking about.
With qualifying boost at Indy, fully trimmed out.
I remember having good races with Matt Orr
what if they need more sounds? lol
Ummm shortshift?
Anybody notice that the white car (near the end) that was in front of him had a totally warped rear spoiler? :D haha
I got my jack Daniel's with me
These are good videos with the volume turned off.
why is the spotter australian?
