Been using Dawn detergent as long as I can remember to wash my car never had a problem as a matter of fact I'm going to crack open a beer and go wash my car with dawn detergent right now
Great video and I appreciate this particular topic. I have been using Dawn for decades to strip off old waxes and stubborn road grease. Only problem is that it works too well. If you use Dawn, just be sure to use some sort of spray wax or something afterwards. Dirt and debris will stick to the paint much faster and more aggressively after washing your car with Dawn and leaving it without some form of protection. Thank the lord for ceramic coatings....I will never have wax another vehicle for as long as I live.
In my country namibia our famous dishsoap is sunlight liquid and I have been washing my car for many years with it without realising all of it's potential as you are explaining in your video, but problem is I never wax my car.
I think the biggest concern among detailers is the discussion that dish detergent will dry out and destroy black trim and rubber. Has anyone stripwashed the same vehicle using Dawn and noticed any rubber or trim detoration over the years?
Michael Belardo I’m a mobile detailer and have only used car dedicated soaps on my personal vehicles and black trim will always fade. Own a car for a few years or more and no matter what that trim will fade unfortunately! All we can do is coat or dress the rubber/plastic to delay the fading and make it look black and fresh
The inherent problem with mass-produced plastics/black trim as found on cars, is they are simply made with inferior chemistry/ingredients. they will always fade and degarde. Maintenance is king.
Wax and sealants only last around 6 to 8 months (some more or less than others). We use dawn just before it's completely worn off to apply new application of wax/sealant. You never want to apply new wax over 6 month old wax or what's left of it.
I like that you understand your audience and that all are not necessarily experienced and knowledgeable. Speaking as an enthusiast and not a pro detailer, I find too many times You Tubers assume their viewer knows the vernacular and, thus, requires no explanation. For example, what's an IPA solution? It took me a while before I picked up it is usually an alcohol/water mixture. I now know there are different proportions but what are the ratios and when do you use them? Thanks for your time and effort making these vids.
@James O'Brien Ditto on what you said....it's ironic how frequently I am slammed for too much info/detail in my vids, only to hear endless guys over-think, over-worry about some of the dilution ratios. And someone might want to tell the psa110 guy above that I am actually one of the few "UA-cam Detailers" that is an actual professional....
Nail on the head, countless people talk about it. And I usually just laugh under my breath about most stuff like that. I have had a few started in with getting carried away with the whole I heard you should never ever use that when I do my first full detail for them. Just let them know what I am doing and why I am doing it the way I am. Being I start with that because I have no idea what anyone has put on there before I got there. Then of course the people who know your job better then you know your job, even when you went to school for auto paint repair, restoration and refinishing. Love your content brother I appreciate your in depth video and commentary on them. I know it's a pain in the rear, adds hours to a job that already takes hours in the first place.
I appreciate your comments; and certainly appreciate the empathy!! Unless you have done the video production consistently; it is hard to understand how much additional time it adds to your life!!
man people say it eats away at the clearer coat and never comes out so that it eventually fades rhe paint because it doesn't wash out. what's your take
@@anth115 not really, factor in you're watering it down so much that its not going to build up. I have had people say that too mu reply is if it's hurting a clear coat and won't come off the clear coat why would you ever put it on a dish you plan on eating off. I don't suggest you do it often, I do mine about once a year, but only because I stay on top of it. The paint on my truck alone was around 5 grand, but thats the cost of candy paint. My suggestion after using it would be a good wax after, not a spray but a good carnauba wax application ( if you are not used to a buffer) P.S. If this question was not posed to me sorry. Lol. Also it's used to get oil off baby sea turtles and penguins.
@@jonsidds6963 thanks for that reply yes you see a ton of over excerpted comments on how evil dawn is and how it doesn't wash out and how it leaches into the clear coat until eventually your paint wears out. They dotn realizes that it does dilute and wash out like you mentioned
Meguiars Water Magnet is awesome, couple of swipes and I do "fine tune" with regular microfiber. No need to do major squeeze of Water Magnet as it absorbs a ton of water fast.
Dawn is good for attacking heavy grease and grime but it's hard to rinse off. For a strip wash I use purple power vehicle and boat wash. It has a pH of 10 but is safe for paint and rinses easily
I used Dawn and my car completely melted. I had to scrape it off my driveway. I should have known better since all my silverware and dining plates also dissolved when I used Dawn on them. 😭
I think using Dawn is a bad idea for many reasons, but even if you don't agree with any of those reasons, it is still a bad idea to use it. Why? Because it is almost impossible to find cheaper than 12 cents an ounce. Most people pay more. A LOT more. I've seen it lower but rarely and you can't always depend on that. On the other hand, Purple Power Vehicle and Boat Wash, which does everything Dawn is reputed to do, does it much better, and is designed for vehicles, is about half the best price you can find Dawn for. It will last years in your garage so even if you don't use it often, it will still be around when you need it.
Just curious: A couple of years ago I purchased Adam's Strip Wash for use prior to applying new sealant. After watching your video, I can't help thinking it was nothing but glorified expensive dish soap. In your opinion, could I just as well have used Dawn dish soap and saved $20, or is Adam's product in fact preferable for stripping wax and/or old sealant?
Dawn dish soap is the blue collar secret for any business that deep cleans. The business I clean windows with has 1 bottle of an empty professional window cleaning solution and for the past years it stays filled with dawn dish soap ; )
I used full strength dawn on my range hood of my stove and grease and paint came off. Possibly age of range hood 26 years old. Now I got a problem, paint that is left is sticky. Getting a new hood.

Right??!! Jeans??? I have spent the last 30+ years only wearing shorts to work in. But my business days are differnt now. i am also older and I get progressively colder and colder each coming winter. Hi Darren. Two questions I hope you have a chance to address. The first is related to washing and the other to a completely unrelated to this video, but one I’ve always wanted to ask. I follow your videos religiously, so if you addressed these questions in previous material, I apologize. 1. Do you not promote the two bucket method? Personally, I think it’s a lot of hype. 2. Why do you never address ceramic coatings?! Is it because you’re mobile, or is it another over hyped space? Hi(now there’s an overused term). Thanks Darren.-Brian (a Canadian fan)
Hey Brian- great questions. I will do my best to provide at least good answers. I also think the two bucket wash method is hype. I could work down that "rabbit hole" of debate with anyone. Ultimately like so many other areas of life, it comes down to ROI: return on investment. The two bucket method I am sure at a "microscopic level" IS safer...but is it really worth the extra time and effort?? Or does it simply allow guys/girls to embellish their world as a true expert or some OCD lunatic as a badge of honor??? I would love a guy to step up and show me quantifiable results long-term as to the merits of the two bucket wash method. But once again; it makes for great videos and social media posts. Just ask the endless UA-cam detailers that pop-up here on YT on a weekly basis. Apparently the world wants to educate people on all things detailing related, regardless of any real world experience. Ceramic Coatings: I have been on the fence on this one. largely because I see so much hype built into this topic from companies that make the stuff, and the detailers who promote the stuff. I do believe it has a place in the market and has true merits to it. But I don't believe the industry of coatings is educating people like they should. I love how a new "industry" (ceramic coatings in this case) comes out with new terminology most of us don't even understand: like the "9H hardness" or the SiO2 chemistry. It all sounds sophisticated and "cool", but how many of us understand this stuff. But the industry loves hype and grandstanding...it sells products. Thanks for tuning in!! Apologies for not having more time to respond to questions like yours
So i should only use one bucket to wash my car? Other youtuber use two or more. Your bucket doesn't look that big so you could not count it as two buckets.
Damn . D. .. you really know how to put on a clinic on properly filling up a bucket of soap and water .. I dare you you to do a dedicated video on this topic and I think you would be surprised how many views it would get .. not kidding D. ... hey love you vids as usual . Nice comedic touch with the blow suds of your hands fail . Believe it or not the community loves watching this "simple" topic videos . This isn't a long length. Ammo ny can do some long videos by that I mean spend 25 mins talking about 1 mf cloth, in a 2 hour video. Has great videos but sometimes it's the same thing or point for 20+ mins, so it can be a grind to watch
REAL ANSWER-DON'T! IT'S ABRASIVE! MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL SOAP RESIDUE OFF THE CAR! I did by accident and my car peeled like wallpaper later! Since dawn soap can clean oil off ducks, it will strip the paint!

Some manufacture of car polish recommend using Dawn to remove wax before applying polish.

You can use dawn on your car, if you dont have wax on it if you did wax your car then use a car washing soap if you dont want to remove it.

Old range hood paint sometimes peeled off by itself, just don't touch it, will make it worse
I ruined a paint job in the 80s using dishsoap. But paint is better today.
personally, i seen people wash they car with dawn on a weekly basis
I use Dawn to wash my Huracan and have never had a problem in 2 years
What would the PH in Dawn soap be around yes I'm a "over thinker" thanks Darren great vid
I have never looked up the ph level of Dawn.
Dawn dish soap is between 8.7 and 9.3 PH.
Wow, an old time's wash! No snow foam, only one bucket, dish soap, rims at last... And nothing will happen if you seal the paint afterwards.
What's a better uv polymer sealantfor gelcoat rv. Ardex Ocean or jescar powerlock? Or anything else u might recommend
