For the past two days, I have been listening to Mike Stern's guitar. In my humble opinion, he is one of the jass greats on six strings. Thanks for the outstanding contribution.
I saw Stern and Tom Kennedy a month ago and they confirmed to me that I made the right decision to go into network engineering and play music on the side. Next Level
What a great band! Already booked a ticket for November 2019 with Mike and Dennis. Two of the greatest musicians around and, of course, I can NEVER miss a single show that features DENNIS CHAMBERS on drums. The groove and control he has is spellbinding. PS I also love that Mike is singing now.
I saw a Miles Davis concert from 82 where Miles just couldn't play.. he was just simply amazed from this guitar player.....went searching immediately for this man..and saw - ONLY - this new 2015 vid / show.....just no words for all the musicians.....but where was this guitar player for 30 odd years ???? thanks a lot for this up load;..... just simply best jazz musicians ever..... :-)
@@gameover313 Mike also did a lot of touring all over the world. Not to forget his input to the great Steps Ahead. I love the records you mention and would like to add "These Times".
My introduction to Tom on bass after hearing his name in a recent Premier Guitar Rig Rundown interview of Mike Stern. Great audio mix on this vid in my headphones. Thx for uploading.
@@het_gele_teken I have seen Stern many times, mostly with Chambers, once with Weckl. Only once with Weckl because the same music has more power and feel with Chambers. I think the interpretation of Stern's music, which is fusion, is delivered more with Chambers. Everything Weckl plays has a Latin/Jazz feel. Chambers delivers the fusion! Weckl's style down plays it, Chambers raises it.
Liked the reference to Jean Pierre in the first tune. Saw him and John Scofield with Miles Davis in 1983. Great show then and am really enjoying this. Thanks.
Amazing energy combined with creativity, stamina, technical prowess rarely seen, with enough mood changes to hold your ear through it all. Hats off to these boys!
They are just truly outstanding performers, a treat lo listen to. What i like the most about them though is the fun they have and they let it show on stage.
I thought, when younger studying jazz, that Sco and Frisell were a notch above this guy. After 30+ years i now understand what Mike does, where I took inspiration and how he paced it all together, I am now convinced this guy is a genius. J Doe, hear Bird without listening and all he's themes are the same. Mike has a style, liked it or not, and he follows his path, regardless. cheers
Totally. You could call it Jazz Fusion - but it's not really Larry Carlton or Spryo Gyro Jazz fusion. It's Funk and Rock with Jazz chords, progressions and Berklee level music insanity of scales over chords. Would you describe it similarly? It's just got more pocket and bite to sync your teeth into and groove to than some jazz with some of the rock riffs (pentatonic riffs) and doesn't have the cheesy chord progressions of what a lot of fusion (jazz and pop?) has. I got turned on to "Fat Time" on Marcus Miller's SXM show. Mike just kills it and yeah, I've been going after more of Mike since then.
Great gig.. the one where Mike signed my guitar :-) He still is a great, humbe and funny guy with excellent skills! See you next time, Mike (BTW, thanks for the video, I already wondered when this would be broadcasted.. all those camera's during the gig!)
I've seen this show (in a different venue), I was really surprised by Dennis way of playing. He was so light and jazzy! Even he is great in that style of music, I was surprised, I thought he was more funky / groovy / fussionny... Anyway, great show, thanks for sharing!
Dennis is actually a Jazz musician first! He gets a lot of attention for his next level speed and chops but he started with jazz. He told me that Jazz was the gateway to the other styles.... jazz essentially made the other styles “swing” or bounce in a sense! He definitely has that “bounce” in every context he plays!!! D.C. =Legend
II have the good fortune to experience Mike perform on several occasions throughout the years and he was always surrounded by a stellar group of musicians , all virtuoso's in their own right and every show was brilliant, whether on the stage of a larger venue or up close and personal at the 55 Bar in Manhattan where he performs regularly when not on tour. I have watched him perform from only a few feet away and was no less impressed. From what i have seen Mikes shows ranged from brilliant on an average night to transcendent. Mike is also a great band leader because every musician is allowed their time to shine, but always within the larger context of the musical performance. My only complaint about Mike is that he does''t sing more, because the beautiful vocal harmonies that he scat sings along with his playing show he has a great voice.
Yep, Mike can sing great also. Saw him in St. Louis and he finished the show singing Red House. He performs that tune a lot ua-cam.com/video/1UaQ79L0RRA/v-deo.html
There's something really fascinating about Chambers' technique that I still can't quite put my finger on: When I listen to other technically skilled drummers -- e.g., Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, Gavin Harrison -- I often sense that I can "hear" their thought process. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) But when I hear Dennis Chambers play, *everything* he does, no matter how technically sophisticated, just sounds like he FELT IT. There's seemingly a remarkable lack of pretense or rigorous calculation behind his note placements and subdivisions. I'd love to wrap my head around how he achieves that!
I really wonder why such live concerts are not sold on itunes or play market among regular movies? I cannot be there and pay for the ticket but I would love to pay for the video. Brecker Brothers in Barcelona, Dennis Chabers' instructional video, John Scofield in Poland. I would pay for many videos like these.
I’m just discovering who Dennis chambers is a little t here after a Drumeo video brought me here. lol. I’m trying to find some early footage of him playing for Sugar Hill, I used to love that stuff when I was in middle school! Sad... can’t find it.... just saying
that rocker still lives in his blood and bones....MS = Cool Kitty :) ...and bassist => KILLA (i wouldn't say same about sound quality...i hardly hear low notes....c'mon....did someone "remixed" original audio?). thanks 4 sharing.
So I was reading about one of my favorite musicians and a review of a Mike Stern/Yellowjackets show popped up that said Stern had problems with the Lowell George diet (heroin and twinkies) and a tendency to make his solos sound like a slightly happier Tony Iommi. So I had to check him out
Simply divine performance from exceptional musicians. But watching this and clips from other bands including, say, Rush, has me wondering how those drummers that spend so much energy playing their kits get to become so chubby in their mature years? There are lots of examples, I just used Rush because Neil Peart was a universal figure who obviously burnt calories like a volcano on stage and yet managed to gain like 100lbs over his 40-year tenure.... just musing, 😊
Not so bad, that observation. An aging metabolism combined with alcohol and lack of self-control in front of the fridge might lead to this refurbishing of male physique. They only burn their calories behind the drums, that is the point.
@@niwa957 I get you but what I wonder about is if a drummer is bound to over-eat to compensate for the expended energy his instrument requires. That being said not all drummers are obese, but the heavy ones seem to be overrepresented among members of rock, jazz and fusion bands. Maybe they're simply paying homage to Billy Cobham? 😁
@@kavemankarl2588 As I said, a valid question, I don't know a definitive answer. But as long as Bill and Dennis fit behind the drumset and see the drums they're hitting...And Dennis was the usual force of nature here.
I wish Michael Brecker and Bob Berg were still alive to take this music into the stratosphere.

I love the difference between Dennis Chambers and Dave Weckl. Both great, interpretation night&day.
Both drummers are great. They both have thier own mojo. That's the beauty of music. Variety! !
