Chevy Cruze - How to replace the Water Pump (mine is LEAKING....)

- Today I'm going to replace the water pump in this Chevrolet Cruze with the 1.4L Turbo. I noticed a leak on that side of the engine and found that it was coming from the water pump.

Very well made video the cameras angles are perfect. Step by step and well explained. Mine is leaking to. Stupid car loves leaking coolant. Replaced every coolant part that has leaked now it comes down to the water pump. I guarantee you the radiator is next lol. Thanks for showing me how to take it off. This helps a lot because paying some a mechanic is very expensive.
You bet. Thanks for the compliments and for watching!
@@3DayWeekend i have the same issues everything replaced but the pump
Good video, very informative. Gonna swap mine as it's leaking to. .. gah. Just replaced the coil pack lol 🤣
Man you're a lifesaver!!! Can't thank you enough for what you do!!!!!♥️♥️
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Perfectly presented video. I managed to do this job without removing the fender side / large engine mount (admittedly it was a bit more difficult)... My car (Opel Astra with the same engine) is now back on the road again. Time consuming, but straightforward repair. Note to other Ecotec engined car owners: this engine is easy to work on (for the most part!). UA-cam vidoes (like this gem), will save you lots of money. Thanks again for the easy to follow video.
Thank you! Yes, I have found that they are pretty easy to work on. Good thing, because they aren't exactly the most reliable engine I've come across! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video just did mine and thermostat today very easily with your help. Cost like $220 for both parts at advanced auto. Took me about 2-3 hours talking my time, thx for the video brother.
Sure thing. Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Awesome camera shot, straight on to the pump!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful.
I can't agree with you more. We have a 2013 RS. It's a great running fun to drive little car. Every time you turn around there's coolant leaking from somewhere else. At this point I have literally replaced every line and part related to the cooling system. Good for now until next month
My thoughts exactly! Seems like I'm always working on coolant leaks with these engines... Thanks for watching!
Thumbs up and subbed! Great video. Able to see your steps and right to the point. The chevy cruze is a damn nightmare but at least easy to work on! Lol Thank you for this!
Thanks for the compliments and for watching! Much appreciated, and I am glad it helped! And yes, the Chevy Cruze has quite a few common issues. I have another one sitting outside right now waiting for a new head gasket! Ugh....
Love your work 👏👍
Thank you very much!
Thank you 3Day Weekend. You taught me how to fix my own head gasket and water pump. Next may be the timing cover but it seems to be holding for now.
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Oh, timing cover is quite easy, but there is a "correct" procedure. Do a little research before just swpping it out, and you'll be fine.
@@arcadesunday4592 everything has been great after fixing water pump and head with your videos. Thanks again
@michaeltafoya7708 think you should thank OP (not me). Lol!
very helpfull,Thanks👋🏻👋🏻👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Should I use RTV on the water pump gasket?
Two of the bolts are torque to yield. Specifically the one just above and to the left the pulley connector and the one to the bottom right of the circular weep hole cover.
And because GM hates us these are two different bolt sizes.
Of course they are different sizes! :-) Thanks for the info!
You wouldn't happen to know the sizes/part #s for these bolts, would you.
@@kappy0405You ever get the part numbers on those bolts?
I put a lower temp thermostat in my cruise. I hope it will reduce pressures and cause less leaks. Oh yeah you can not buy the lower temp thermostat you have to assemble it out of two.
These engines are a pain. I didn't know there was a lower temp thermostat option. I may have to look into that as well!
@@3DayWeekend Like I said you can not directly purchase it. You have to mix the parts of 2 together.
Would you recommend replacing the thermostat at the same time?
Since it is relatively easy to get to, I wouldn't replace it unless I suspect that it is faulty. Thanks for watching!
Mine is leaking in that area , if the water pump is replaced is it a good idea to have the belt and thermostat changes as well . i have 50k miles on it 2015 year Cruze LTZ... its a big job but not huge unless its something else i dont know where exactly it leaking from , just happened when i got home and saw a puddle of coolant all under that water pump. it never over heated which is odd too. what else is down under that section that would leak if its not the water pump i was wondering ..? Thanks for sharing , good neat work
That side of the engine is probably going to be the water pump. The only other thing on that side is the hose to the radiator and the radiator itself, but that is a little more forward than the pump. The thermostat is there too but part of the pump housing. Keep it topped off with coolant until you can do the job. If that engine overheats ONE TIME, you'll likely be doing a head gasket job! I have another video on that project, and it is not something anyone wants to do!
@@3DayWeekend Yes it was the water pump , had a new one put in on Tuesday , was hoping it might be just a hose but i guess not , $1029 kinda pricey i would say , Thanks for getting back on this ...
That's a robbery.
@@joedevitto6113 bro new factory pump cost $200, they robbed you
Always torque all bolts to avoid failure of the gasket
Excellent pointer. Yes, all bolts should be torqued to spec.
was there a puddle under the car or just coolent dissapearing
This one was making a small puddle under the car.
How do I know if it needs changing?
It will have coolant leaking out of it underneath. If you have a coolant leak from that side of the engine, chances are it's coming from the water pump.
Which brand do you recommend? Thanks
I ordered this one from the dealership.
At 3:00 how did you detach the hose connected to the turbo?
Pinch / twist / pull. It should come off fairly easily. If it has never been off before, it might stick just a little bit at first, but it will eventually slide off.
@@3DayWeekend Thank you for the video 🙏🏼🙏🏼I followed it through and now my car is functioning fine again. You really saved me
Is taking the engine mount off absolutely necessary? I'll keep clicking around to find someone who tried it
I would say yes. The water pump is right behind it and the belt must come off. It's only held on by a few nuts/bolts.
Yes it is, You can't get the water pump off at all with the engine mount on.
Yes it is.
I tried it and I managed to take off all the bolts but couldn’t get the pulley and pump off.
How much do you think a mechanic should charge for that, mine says $1600. 🤕
For just a new water pump?? That seems very excessive to me. An OEM water pump from RockAuto.com is $132 (if you wanted to go OEM, aftermarket is cheaper), and per the book, the job should take 3.2 hours. Seems like the high-end cost for this job (parts and labor) should be closer to $500 (assuming $100/hr labor). Maybe a little more if they put in all new coolant, but certainly not $1600 worth. That's just my opinion!
How much was the labor cost?
Depends on your shop's hourly rate. It shouldn't take them more than an hour or two to do this particular job.
How much would all of this cost?
It's not bad. The part averages around $75 or so, with an hour or two labor.
Hahahahaha gj yea I put thermostat first because the bolts are hard when u put it after
I'm glad someone feels my pain and can learn from it! haha Thanks for watching!
Just wanted to let you know, the bolts on the pulley are not 10mm. They are E10
Good catch! That is correct, but the 10mm will grab them. E10 isn't a very common socket in people's tool boxes (not sure why GM likes them so much!), so I try to use what most people will have whenever possible. The only ones I've found so far where you need the actual "inverted torx" (as I like to call them), are the head bolts. Those suckers are IN THERE! haha
@@3DayWeekend you just need to be careful because they can strip in a 10mm. That’s the only reason I brought it up. I’ve done it before and it sucks.
how much a job like this cost?
I would imagine a shop would charge a few hundred for this particular job.
536 to be exact
How do I contact you
You just did! But there's an email address on my "about" page.
As with pump replacement, turbo replacement... why don't anyone clean up the block and all that other stuff that will smell like cheeze for years? it would be so easy to precision degrease the block. good quality video but too bad you left the block a stinky mess.
In Upstate NY we call that the "automatic anti-corrosion system". If it's covered in oil and grease, the road salt can't get to it. I know it sounds crazy, but it works! Thanks for watching!
When in doubt use a 20 lb sledge hammer on it
.
That's how I live my life! :-)
Where did you put the floor jack to hold the motor before you removed the motor bracket mount
On the oil pan on the engine mount side. Use a wooden block or two between the jack and the pan to prevent scratching it. Hope that helps!
@@3DayWeekend thanks you so much for your help I m going to do it this weekend
To much plastic parts on that motor
Agreed, especially on the cooling system!
*I hope they didnt have to pay. Chevy has a TSB for the water pump and they will replace it for free IF you have less than 150K miles and is less than 10 years old. Ownership and title type is irrelevant.*
Yes, on 2011-2014 1.4's. Age goes by the date the vehicle was first put into service. Unfortunately we're nearing the end of this special coverage. Excellent point though! Thanks for sharing!
Hi , after running my Sonic 1.6 dry I replaced the top gasket and the coolant but it keeps showing the engine light and there is noise on the pulley side. Is it necessary to replace the water pump.
Such an easy water pump
These engines, although prone to many failures, are definitely easy to work on!
