Sanding sealer may prevent bleeding. This is used before painting.
A quick light coat of spray clear then paint will prevent bleed out and then you can sand it off and stain/paint.
Hey Mark, I am new to using a router and sign maker kit... Why do you keep moving the lever with your thumb? sorry for the newbie Q's
Absolutely no problem asking any question... I have my plunge router base on my router rather than the standard base. To plunge u move the lever
What depth of cut is good to start with? I know it’s personal preference, but just starting out so don’t want to over/under it on the first try
What about when routing letters into a surface that can't be sanded? Would putting painter's tape down and then routing through the tape work? They you could paint the letters and pull up the tape. I'm going to be doing this into plywood. I don't think sanding would work as I might go through the veneer.
I think that would work just fine... I don't think the tape is really going to cause any issues... Many route thru paper templates taped to the surface... As you already know after painting on the tape I would just pull it off towards the letter all the way around so if the veneer isn't correctly adhered to the plywood you don't get pull out....If you complete a project like this let me know how it turns out.. would love to see a picture.. I know we can't share pictures on here but feel free to send thru messenger or if your comfortable you could text...I can provide number...Have fun, it's a fun set to play with...
A 2nd question. It appeared your router was rocking a bit as you went from top to bottom. Would it work to have a board above and another below your work piece that are the same thickness as the sign and then put some thin boards that are the same thickness as the template? This should create a completely level surface for the router to ride on.
You could definitely do that, there was a little rocking but you don't see it in the actual cut, they are all the same depth. I also probably put a little too much downward pressure on the router, because I'm always concerned that the bushing comes out of the template and things just start flying... I don't know if you feel the same way but to me the router is spinning so fast and you are guiding a moving piece of equipment that it's one of the only pieces of equipment in my shop that actually worries me every time I use it. Safety is always number 1 for me.

I find that the brass router guide binds in the template. It seems to snug and because of that the tape doesn't seem to hold the template still. Do you know of a tip to help with that?
I haven’t experienced that issue so I don’t have a fix. Of all the projects I have done the tape has held and the templates have never moved. Sorry I can’t provide any additional help with that.
The bind I find is with the tape itself. My router base has become so tacky from getting caught on the tape and it peels and rips the tape. I think my next sign I’m going to try vinyl tape.

Can you confirm if using a 1/4 size carbide router bit is correct. How deep should I go on each pass🤔 many thanks. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more.
Sid Hello, The 2 1/4" sign makers kit requires a 3/8" bushing and a 3/8" sign makers carbide bit... I only set the bit depth so I'm getting just the complete rounded over edge of the bit...I have my router unplugged, push down and lock my plunge router in place and adjust just so I'm getting the complete rounded edge of the bit, then I unlock and go to town.... the router I think is one of the scariest pieces of equipment I own and the router shaper table also. Just place the bushing into the template, start the router and go down and move a your own pace, once you have done a few letters you will feel more comfortable, I hope that helps..
