Enjoyed the review. What's actually ironic is I have the Rockler set and something similar to the SignCrafter kit (Sears brand). I agree with your assessment on the plastic bushing. Mine burned out and I ended up eating one template up. Looking forward to following your site.

bikenraider99 Thanks. And I think the rockler kit now includes a brass bushing

Noticed you hand painted your letters which is or can be very time consuming. I apply sanding sealer to my board and then router the letters. I then spray paint the letters with my color of choice. Next I run my sign thru my wood jointer or planner removing any paint over spray and it's done unless you want to do some fine sanding which I haven't found necessary.

A couple of questions: Firs, could you do this with a non plunge router? Second, Why wouldn't spray paint the letters before you sanded (black), then sand the surface, leaving the black letters below? It would save all that hand painting.

What router bit did you use to route the letters out?

Just got the millcraft set today and tried it out. I really took my time setting everything up and a couple of small signs came out real nice. The big issue with it is that you have to keep bushing on the perimeter of the letter templates. One some letters (like A, O, D, G, etc), if you fail to do this, you ruin the cut. It looks like the rockler product does not have this problem. I like the snap together letters that you tape down - nice and simple.

your comment on the bushing must have had an effect, as the kit I got was metal, not plastic. Rockler should put your video on their site, as the directions make you want to go to You Tube for a better idea on how this is supposed to work.

I have the milescraft signmaker the one you didn't like I found the directions a lil lacking but once I got up and going I liked it I didn't have any trouble with the guide just have to make sure you are using the right bit for the right bushing I think maybe that's where the heat build up may be coming from for some But both seem to have their pluses and minuses good review tho
