I’ve known a lot of people who were self-employed, and what many of them say is that it may be great in where you can choose your own schedule and work on what you love, but it also means handling everything from money to clients. You have that independence but also a lot of responsibilities. But it’s always a rewarding feeling in the end when you see your work being paid off.

3 minutes in and you described word for word my current life since I got my new job, I love the work but I have so much trouble with authority figures and the fear of doing something wrong.
I'm working towards finally breaking free from being employed and this is a big boost in motivation for that

Timely message! Yes, working a 9 to 5 today is modern day slavery with the great majority of managers being slave drivers who are never happy with your work. It's usually a nightmare!
I’m a self-employed artist with a complex chronic illness (and about to undergo a neuropsych evaluation for ASD) and the biggest thing I struggle with work-wise is creating structure for my workday that doesn’t burn me out alongside a very demanding schedule of medical appointments and infusions and treatments. Currently working on restructuring with my therapist after a looong period of burnout
i would also add, that while you can make more money self-employed, you could also earn less, depending on how well the bussiness is going. at a company you are guaranteed a set amount each month which is easier to plan ahead with.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm not in the place professionally where I'm able to work for myself, but it's definitely something I'm working towards. The discussion about authority figures and morals rings especially true when I add my neurodivergence to the mix. I appreciate seeing a perspective on self employment that isn't buying into hustle culture and coming from a 'finance bro'

I always thought myself as more of an employee kind of guy, and it pretty much went that way watching your video. I tend to work with a more extrinsic motivation, I'm pretty undisciplined and need that sort of accountability. I also like being able to slack a bit when demand's low (I'm watching this video on work BTW).
There's one pro of being an employee you didn't mention, which is stability. I'm a public servant, so I'm on the far end of this spectrum, but an employee is subject to way less risk than a self-employed. I'm quite risk-averse, so this fancies me too, and asking me to leave public service would be a very, very hard sell.
My graduate course was kinda like self-employment as my advisor was very easy-going, and it was awful in terms of productivity and consistency.
I'm an introvert, but I start missing the workplace if I go too long working by myself. I have a 100% presential job and I think I would like a hybrid schedule, but I don't know if 100% remote would be for me.
On the flip side, having a flexible schedule would be great. Not so much for travelling, but to do errands in business hours, definitely.

Hi, We sound similar in nature. I’m working on becoming more disciplined, however, and I notice I can do it if I have a good why. But yeah, on the clock, the work, I can be slack, in saying that if there’s work that needs to be done, I’ll get onto it right away.
I’m looking for career options for self employment, since we are similar in nature maybe you have some ideas or know of some career pathways that may benefit me?

I think the best way to find out if self employment is right for you is to try working in sales. It has the positives and negatives of both sides - you get out what you put in but you also have a safety net if you’re salary + commission.

5 min in, before I forget, I have all the same personal reasons but intrinsic motivation. I did it anyway and here is how (as a private tutor): The 1st spark of motivation came from a will for freedom, I expanded energy to get out of the academic system and start the business structure ans find some clients while still on track for employment. Then I was sure I liked it, so I left my studies and found myself needing money bc not enough clients. This pushed me to action, but I had limited energy. So I used the energy to get clients, to advertise myself and prepare 1st courses. Once it was done, I was committed to people. Not as an employee but as a service provider. All I had to do is get used to the day to day so that I could latter become better at my job. And no clients ever complained. You need to learn jobs on the fly anyways, and as long as you can provide ANY value, you can get paid for it.
That’s so awesome that you were able to do that. I can’t imagine it was easy. It seems like you have a lot of self-awareness which helped you understand what motivates you and you were able to structure things in a way that keeps you going

I don't feel like I inherently have those traits, but I am actively working on improving. I find some remote jobs have a good amount of time and location freedom. I really want to be in control of what tasks I do though.
Yes, you can absolutely cultivate them! And that's awesome, I feel like remote jobs are so tough to find these days
I’m quite happy that I found a company that gives me abit of best of both worlds. We dont have a typical hierarchy, so we are pretty free to set our schedule, time-off etc. We also work fully remote and can work from anywhere but we do have work parties or offices to go to if we want to. For me, this is the best as I feel like I would be too stressed being self-employed and having all the responsibility and if something goes wrong I wont have money to pay for my living expenses. In Finland as well we get alot of good benefits from companies such as money for vacation! 😎
Hi Ana, I'm a board certified Music Therapist and I've loved watching your content over the years. It has helped so much with introspection and also given me tools to bring to my clients. My job really requires me to be interacting face to face (there are some virtual music therapists but it's not my personal jam), but I may want to have my own private practice someday. I'd like the option to create work where I want to live, instead of having to live where jobs are available. Like you, I'd love to live overseas someday, but being a music therapist requires me to be very in tune with the local culture. Though my family is from Spain, I grew up in the US, and to practice overseas I would have to learn a whole new musical repoirtore, language, and that's not even mentioning different countries' regulations (or lack thereof) for the practice. For now I work in a hospital, and the work I do aligns with my personal values and I'm not micromanaged by my superiors, which is a blessing. We'll see how the rest of my career pans out since I'm recently board certified.. Based on your video, I'd be a good candidate for self employment, so I'm curious to see how I can grow in that direction.
I’m really curious about music therapy myself, I am looking for a way out of my current line of work in a warehouse, and doing delivery driving.
I am more artistic and empathic, so I’d love to be doing work that aligns with supporting others.

Self employment is def not for everyone, I have an aunt who is head accountant at a manufacturing facility, loves her paycheck at the end of the week, I always ask her if she would like to open her own company, never get a response back

I'm often bad at responding to management as well. Just recently at a job I've been at for almost a year, I had emailed an upper management as part of the normal process requesting something. In a week, they had not responded. My manager asked me why I didn't follow up with them trying to insist they answer my email. I said, "I didn't think it was my job to babysit someone who makes more than three times my wage." -- They make more like four times our wage, after having fact checked myself, so y'know, still stands.
She hasn't send me another instant message since then. I think she's trying to pretend she didn't see it. Lol
I'm 50 and gainfully employed in a field of my interest, but I dislike the slowness of authority and safety, and would like to work toward game design if I were going self-employed, and becoming and Art professor if I were to go more traditional. I do work in the research and consulting area of media technology, but I'm pretty bored with it. It feels like I spend my time on entry level technology, instead of growing my skillset into the current trends of technology. Even teaching grade school technology is more advanced than the boomers who are in leadership. I'm working toward completing my degree, while trying to get started in developing entry level games to possibly monetize and definitely learn from.

Self Employd = Working 24/7
Employed = 9-5 and then thinking about what to do in your life for the remainder of the time
I don't give a sht...I'd rather be at a 9 to 5 then not be self-employed or have a 9-5.
"Organized, Disciplined, Consistent" these are all preferable traits. It is implied that self-employed people are better workers to people with jobs
What positive traits are shown in people who have jobs over self-employed workers?
I never said that employees don't have these traits too, only that it's beneficial to have them if you decide to go the self-employment route. Please don't twist my words.
Traits that might benefit employees include a strong sense of teamwork, leadership, social intelligence, and many of the same traits I mentioned in this video: organization, discipline, consistency. I never set up these traits as a dichotomy that one side has and the other doesn't. In fact, many of the traits that could be beneficial in self-employment are also beneficial for employment. The only difference is that, with self-employment, not having the traits I mentioned can mean you don't get paid that month.
Being self imployed doesn't mean monetising what you love, you can do something related to your formation, turn it into a job and have other passions.
