- Today I touch on a very important topic of costs of being self-employed in Spain. It is not a system that is friendly for low-earning folks and I'm sharing the costs I had to deal with and my ways to make it a little bit more affordable.

Thank you Marta, it is so nice to hear the plain and simple truth of moving to Spain
Hi Marta thank you so much for highlighting this. I personally feel that it is a very unfair system here isn Spain for low earning self employed people. The current system really doesn't encourage entrepreneurs to have a go. I have been Autonomo here for over 3 years now and pay the full social security payment (which is currently 311€ monthly), combining this with a Gestoria fee of 60€ plus the income taxes and, as you mentioned, there is no minimum earnings limit (where you are tax exempt as in the UK and other European countries) so, all in all, its very very hard ro make ends meet and hardly seems worth it. I teach English here which I feel is a very worthwhile job and a contribution to the society. I hope that one day the government will improve the situation allowing us to have a chance to make a fair living here in Spain. Thank you once again for raising this point and your vlog. Best wishes xx
We can either have hope or set up a company in Estonia 😜
@@martamaleta hahaha super! 😘
@@BakerWild yes I think so here in Madrid at least since the end of last year for me :( it’s just way too much.
@@martamaleta I looked into this and it doesn't seem to be an actual viable option. You still have to be Autonimo and pay the Social security. Unless you know something I don't?
@@aric85 i’m not really a reliable tax advisor 😆
Thank you. I appreciate your information
a couple things to note, as a EU citizen if you can prove sufficient economic means (€7k per adult) in a bank account and pay one year upfront for private health wit no copayments you can become a resident. You don’t have to be autonomo or spanish employee. Its true you won’t have access to public health since you’re not paying into it but you will have private anyway, i realize this is a bit privileged scenario to have money upfront but though i would mention it as an option
Thanks Marta. A friend who is autónomo and runs a hair salon told me that there’s a new law awaiting approval that will push up autónomo payments to €500 p/m for those earning above €1000 p/m. There’s a lot of people declaring La Renta up to €1000 and then taking cash only over and above that, that doesn’t get declared. The government doesn’t seem to incentivise entrepreneurs / autónomos / small business owners trying to make a honest living.
Oh my god, that sounds really bad! Private healthcare seems to be cheaper at this point. Imagine giving away 50% of the income for the social security and then 20% on income tax... earn €1000 have €300 left...
That amount is only going drive people away from being honestly self employed here in Spain.
@@martamaleta sadly that is the reality this is why I’m complaining bitterly. It’s just to hard.
thanks :-) Helps a lot
Sound painful.
You are right UK has good terms, you can earn £12570 /year no tax or health insurance to pay. For self employed you can deduct expenses too. Sadly we gave up EU membership with free European healthcare. We can still spend around six months in Spain a year and earn £12570 year in UK with no UK tax or UK healthcare to pay, just need travel insurance for the 6 months we are in Spain.
That’s one way around it but if your house home is here? Then not so great. :((
Great info
I would love to live in Spain, but Spain makes taxes for autonomos hell. It comes to confiscate levels.
We were autónomos in madrid for 11 years we paid 20% VAT it started at 18% when we started, IRPF at 20%, we had to add this onto the invoice, then we were paying 270 euros a month each, there are two of us, for as I say the privilege of owning your own company 😂. Then we payed our gestor, house etc. and of course at the end of the day pay about 28 -33% tax. So no it’s not a great country to be self employed and if they got rid of most of these things they would find that they would have a lot of people that would be self employed. A lot of people work in the black market and that is why.
I had hard time back time.... Did waiter job.small restaurant... Now I work in cruise ship.... With God blessing🙏........
I live in murcia and here thers a tarifa cero plan for autonomo where i wont have to pay anything for the first 2 years so im planning to be a self trader in murcia. Still very much a beginner but very eager to start.
That sounds great! Good luck!
Thank you! This is so informative.
ITO of getting a Green Card. I had a different experience. I Gave them Medical Insurance Proof (Without co-payment) A bank statement showing 8k Funds available and a Pardon. Got my green card, no problem.
there are different ways for the green NIE :)
Hi @vince-the-prince, I would love to to the same, do the funds have to be in a spanish bank account or can they be my bank in my country? Can not find the answer online anywhere.
Hey Marta, thank you for sharing. Yes, compared to the UK, this sounds so unfair n ridiculous! What's the odd like to get a self employed visa for esl teachers? Me n my other half are hoping to relocate to Valencia n teach English privately. Also, do you know if a minimum bank balance is also required? Many thanks.
I absolutely can’t speak from experience because I am still a citizen of the EU… So for me the setup of self employed was same as for a Spanish citizen
In the UK u only need to register for vat if self employed & your previous 12 months total revenue was more than £83k
so much easier!
I was thinking of getting Ceramic pottery training in some school in Spain then starting my online store after that now I am not so sure ,but I have a question what I have multi income sources, can I declare only one?
yes you can have as many as you wish
Hello Marta. My name is Oleg. I was wondering if you could give me a hint. I'm from Czechia and I just got my NIE (slip of paper with the NIE number) and I'm trying to complete the form 36 to become an autonomo but I'm being asked to provide some Número de Soporte and I can't find it anywhere. Do I need to receive some other card or ID for that? Thank you.
hey, I think it’s this red number written on the bottom of the NIE card (do you have a green card or white paper?)
Hi Marta, thanks so much for this. I'm currently being punched by autonomo in Catalunya😢 can you recommend any expat services or good gestiors/accountants? I'm finding it really hard to find English speaking proactive and patient people. Anyway, appreciate your channel and hope your new year is off to a good start and you found your way with the autonomo ballache ❤
I’m definitely at the easiest time financially right now. I am using Talenom for my accounting services
@@martamaleta that's awesome to hear 💕 I will check them out, thank you 🙏
Hmmm, another way around this is to keep it to yourself for the first few years of your life in Spain.😋😉👍
Good luck with getting your residency then :)
@@martamaleta
Well, I’m in a good position because I already have my NIE and I have dual citizenship Irish/British. Best of both worlds UK and Europe 😋😉
It is really hard, because Barcelona is the best place to live, I am an entrepreneur, so I only want to work for myself. All these costs are a kind of payment for an opportunity to live in Spain. I hope it is worth it!
As an entrepreneur, you work for every client you have, so essentially you have thousands of bosses. It is a challenge and not an easy path, for sure.
Not sure what is your idea of a perfect place to live, but for me, Barcelona is far from perfect.
most self employed expats in Spain are working poor
Thank you dear, do i need a certificate if i have an ecommerce website?
Yep
very good information. What is a digital certificate?
I think I’ll do a series of videos on these useful spanish life things to get when you live here :)
My main issue with being autónoma is the tax system here, all the accounting rules and systems are so complicated that you need an accountant and when you do have one they’re generally useless and are surprised you have questions
I’m quite happy with a company called Talenom. but my accounting needs are quite basic!
Like and enjoy 🍀👍🍀
I see that many foreigners intend to work and earn income in Spain without paying taxes or contributing to social security
well, that’s up to them 👍
hi marta how can i apply for skilled tradesman course in spain
I have never heard of this I’m sorry :(
Marta 😏 you are amazing
Thanks man 🙃
and by the way ,I saw the cheeky swim , that video was really funny 😂😂😂
and try to focus on adsense , this will help your channel a lot sweetheart
you 'll be famous on youtube , I feel it
@@yassinemoney3448 that stuff is running already! Step by step.
Spanish taxes are brutal for Autonomo status - even brutal for US retirees too = they tax US social security income at 3%!
Also, Spain does not recognize US-based Trusts either.......Spain taxes on WORLDWIDE INCOME PERIOD!
I was looking into retiring in Spain, but the taxes, and the fact they are running out of water, made me take a closer look at Mexico.
Also closer for flights and eventually visiting the family. I totally agree taxes are quite high that’s why cash flow is still strong here
Once uve got your papers nie or green card. U can choose not to pay autonomo, if u don't make enough money. as long as u pay income tax if u make money in spain u can sort this with u accountant but if u don't go autonomo u don't get health insurance.
Yeah, that’s the problem
As I understand it if you create your own income as In not working for someone else then you have to be Autonomo ‘self employed status.
This is why I left Spain 😢
Where to? Thinking of options!
@@martamaleta Next door, Portugal!! So easy to go to Spain 😉😁
I would like to be a freelancer but I'm not willing to pay 300 euros/month. This is a robbery.
it is.. now they changed it a bit because it’s based on the income you get and i pay 235 euros per month. it’s still a lot…
235€ might be OK if you earn a lot of money, but not for the ones who earn little money or do sporadic works. Before there were "cooperativas de facturación" like Factoo but the government shut them all @@martamaleta
