Hi John, Janeen from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. I met you on the camino in 2018 by a water fountain when I was filling up my water bottle. So pleased you got to walk the Camino in one go. There is something quite profound that happens when you get the opportunity to walk that distance and time. It really is an inward journey as well as a physical journey. Ive carried the camino in my heart since that time and hope to walk it again in 2024. I truly believe the world would be a better place if everyone did a camino at least once in their lifetime. Watching your video brought back some wonderful memories. Its truly a humbling experience and quite life changing. Not in a brass band sort of way but it's subtle and gentle and something that is felt in the heart space. I wish you well and thanks again for the memories not only in the video but on the camino in 2018. ❤

Dear Janeen. How lovely to hear from you. Yes I remember meeting you at the fountain. We had met in Najera too. We were also in the same auberge in Santo Domino de la Calzada, with a Margaret from NZ. Then we walked to together to Grignon. I remember you had had bad blisters, either on this trip or on one before. I managed to walk the whole Camino last year without a blister. But to stop me getting proud I lost all those things. I met many aussies this time (I only walked from Leon to Santiago), including a friend of my sister. Glad you enjoyed the video. my email is: johnmcgowan50@gmail.com . Take care. John

Hi Kerry. I am glad you loved my video Thank you for saying so. Regarding the choice of route I think it depends on what is most important for you: is it the people you meet? The chances are you will meet more on the Frances. If it's the walk then I believe the Norte is a good walk, though more demanding, fewer people. If it's the convenience, then again I believe there are more places to stay on the Frances. Either way, enjoy it.

💗Hi, John, I can see that - it shines thro' in your commentary - the 'wonderful' not the age...but that's great, too! As my grandma said to the young PC who arrived to take a statement (she'd been knocked down by a milk float alighting from the local bus, but hadn't let on) when he enquired her age, "I'm over 30." At which, my mama, my bro, and I nearly collapsed (giggling) as she was mid-90s! I'm nothing like that old, but don't think I'll divulge my age on UA-cam! P.S. I found when last visiting some Melanesian Bros. in PNG that I could manage the hills, some quite steep, and I still exercise each morning. So may well go for it.

A lovely video and helps me in my planning of what to expect. After many years of saying, "Next year I'll do it, next year I'll do it, next year I'll do it....", then realising I would spend my whole life saying and not doing, I'm am finally setting off the end of September, this year. I have been binging on videos of people doing it during September/October. I hope I have as good weather as you seem to have had. I'm an avid hiker, so the distance doesn't concern me, though I find it is the tiny practicalities that do. - did you drink the water straight from the fountains, filter it, or buy bottled? Did you have any problem with accomodation? (I am hoping I will have missed the busiest time, at the start of September).

John, why have you added the photo flashes in your video presentation? Examples at 2:27 and 3:00

What a lovely and contemplative film. God willing, I too can walk the Camino. I'm currently recovering from bilateral total hip replacement, so I'm a bit concerned of the what ifs. But, I suppose that's part of the way, isn't it. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. May I ask how old you are and what you did to prepare for the pilgrimage? Also, did you ever get your credit card back? Thank you.

I was 72 when I walked the Camino last September-October. I am blessed with good health. You should wait till you are ready; you don't want to do damage to your hip. The first day, from St Jean Pied de Port, is a long climb up to 1500 meters. But you can miss this if you start at the next point and the first in Spain: Roncesvalles. To prepare for the pilgrimage I began walking a bit more about 6 weeks before I left. I built up the distances. It is good to find uphill walks, as they strengthen the leg muscles. but apart from one or two places it isn't really the strenuous. I strongly recommend a book on the Camino by John Brierley. No, I never got my credit card back. I cancelled it as soon as I lost it, but fortunately, I had another one with me. PO Travel cards can be helpful. I really hope you can have this wonderful experience.

You can do it! The hip, after 1-2 months, returns surprisingly close to normal, i.e. everyday use w/out issue. I was astounded at my rebound. Both mine have been done; the 2nd was just 10 months before doing the Appalachian Trail in May 2022 (at age 62). Even with my 31 Lb/14Kg pack, no prob. I rested when I needed. The weight for Camino will be half that! At some point, train w/ weighted pack; fatigue in the muscles is what you'll find to be a lingering item. But, hey, an extra rest day in a quaint village? more Spanish cuisine? - no complaints here!
I landed here (thankfully) b/c the time frame; I shall be on the C-Frances this coming Sept 26 - October, as well. However, now I'm sporting a new right knee! Way more recovery & P/T.
My thoughts dwell on "bedding." I figure to be a slower walker, hence, allowing 2 weeks longer - so 40+ days compared to others, so I'll be packing a 23 oz/650gm goose down quilt: 30*F/-1*C, I guess (not just a bag liner). *** Greetings from Syracuse, NY, USA. ***

Hi John , what a beautiful video. How many km did you walk a day ? Would you recommend the time of the year you walk el Camino ?

Thank you for appreciating my video. I walked on average 25 kms a day. Either spring or autumn is a good time to walk, this to avoid the heat of the summer. It also means you avoid school/college holidays when the Camino can become crowded. Read John Brierley's book on the Camino, it is full of useful information.

Hi what if i feel so tired and decide to take a bus to Compostela without taking a long walk anymore is that ok ? hann thanks

People do the Camino in different ways. Some people are forced to take taxis or buses when they get injured. You can go at your own pace. On the french route there are plenty of places to stay so that should you get too tired you can find somewhere nearby to rest.
