  • This video describes in detail how to set the correct thread tension on your sewing machine. A straightforward technique to test and adjust your sewing machine's thread tension for optimal performance is important.
In general, by sewing diagonally across a plain-woven fabric square and then pulling the thread ends to break them, you can assess the balance between the needle and bobbin threads. If both threads break at the same point, your tension is correctly balanced. However, if only one thread breaks, it indicates that the tension is too tight on that thread relative to the other. This method allows you to fine-tune the needle thread tension with small adjustments until you achieve a balanced tension, ensuring smooth and even stitches in your sewing projects.
The problem occurs when you are to adjust the tread tension for heavy duty industrial sewing threads. Here are steps to achieve proper tension balance for heavy-duty threads on an industrial sewing machine:
    1. Start with a Clean Machine: Ensure your sewing machine is clean and well-maintained. Lint, dust, and thread remnants can affect tension.
    2. Thread Quality: Use high-quality, heavy-duty threads that are compatible with your machine and the material you're working with.
    3. Proper Threading: Double-check the machine threading. Even minor threading errors can lead to tension issues, especially with thicker threads.
    4. Tension Test: Conduct a tension test on a fabric scrap similar to your project material. Sew a straight stitch line and then a zigzag or a seam that will be stressed in use. Examine the stitches.
    5. Adjust Needle Tension: If the needle thread is too loose or too tight, adjust the needle tension knob slightly. For heavy-duty threads, you might need to increase the tension slightly more than you would with standard threads, but remember to adjust incrementally.
    6. Adjust Bobbin Tension: If adjusting the needle tension doesn't solve the problem, you might need to adjust the bobbin tension. This is usually done by turning the screw on the bobbin case clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease it. However, changes here should be very minimal.
    7. Needle and Presser Foot Pressure: Ensure you are using the correct needle size and type for the heavy-duty thread and fabric. Adjust the presser foot pressure if your machine allows it, as too much or too little pressure can affect stitch quality and tension.
    8. Test and Repeat: After each adjustment, perform another test sew on a scrap fabric. It may take several tries to get the tension perfectly balanced.
Documentation: Keep a record of tension settings that work well for specific thread and fabric combinations for future reference, but most importantly don't overdo it so that you loose all the settings because you have lost the starting position. It’s all about balance!
Professional Help: If you've tried these adjustments and still can't get the tension right, consult the machine's manual or seek help from a professional. Some industrial machines have specific requirements or hidden tension adjustments that are not obvious to the user.
Remember, achieving the perfect tension for heavy-duty industrial sewing threads requires patience and practice. Small adjustments can make a significant difference, so adjust gradually and test frequently.

I am using these threads, which are the highest quality you can buy, especially for outdoor gear where you want a more apparent look:

I use these needles in size 19, 21, and 23 (mostly matching 21):

I use this Juki DU-1181n sewing machine. I think it's the best compromise to do it all; it is really a workhorse for a sewing machine. The machine works great for me in sewing lightweight leather.

I guarantee you that a more complete yet easy to understand video doesn't exist. I was tempted to send my machine to the bottom of the ocean until finding this. You are a life saver!

Thanks for taking the time to show the results of adjusting the top and bottom tension. Sewing with thicker thread seems to create this problem for me and now its a matter of having patience to adjust.

Regarding thread tension, you may find this video useful. ua-cam.com/video/kINRgj42GnI/v-deo.html
Most users use the yoyo method or drop test to set bobbin thread tension. But in my experience, you need a bit more bobbin thread tension with higher thread thickness, and I normally use 0.5 Newton for Serafil 20.
I is a different issue to reduce the variation in height of the lock of the stitch. For a normal lock stitch machine, it will depend of the timing of the feed. For a walking foot machine like yours, the variance may be bigger than a normal sewing machine, but I do not know the specifics for such machines. Be aware, that just changing the thread color of serafil 20 or other kinds of thread will likely change bobbin thread tension. Different batches of same type of thread are different.

Hold on now sir, I've been sewing almost 50 years, your making it harder than it is when it is basic common sense. You are trying to hide the thread twist of a very thick thread inbetween only 2 layers of a fabric weight that just is not thick enough to hide it. Drop down to a thinner thread that is appropriate for what you are sewing. If the thread used must be two different colors and certain parts of the project is only 2 layers of fabric no amount or adjustment will hide the twist, just switch the thread/needle to smaller gauge for those areas, the stitch is fine and well formed, its the fabric that is not thick enough to hide it. Its like your trying to force a big size 10 foot into a size 7 sandal, your toes will hang out the front and heel out the back of the sandal, no way around it, get the right shoe, same principle.

Good point about the choice of thread thickness, etc, but are you really saying that the thread tension setting is nonsense? There is no need to do anything about it because one can fix the issue of having the bottom thread showing on the top of the fabric by selecting a thicker fabric? I doubt the Japanese engineers constructing the Juki machines with adjustable thread tension share your views. However, I am happy you found a solution that works for you!

I’ve been trying to adjust my Juki ddl 8700 for days the same way and nothing works, I even changed needles and needle sizes and nothing works :(

Get some really thick artificial plastic leather, it will help you see it more clearly. Test the extremes on the settings and don’t hesitate on trying this because once you have tested the most extreme values, you then gradually narrow it down to the best setting. If this doesn’t work, you have and issue with the selected thread vs needle and need to test for a different fabric, needle + thread combination. As last resort you have a problematical machine, which is unlikely.
