Great points but missing from the conversation about nature's carbs is whole grains. I'm not referring to processed grains like rolled oats. I'm referring to truly 'whole' organic gluten-free grains like buckwheat, oat groats, & sorghum. Wonderfully satisfying fiber-rich foods that help lower Apo(B) and LDL-P which nearly all traditional Keto enthusiasts are dangerously high in.
ApoB is not bad, because it is contained in every LDL-P. And high LDL-P is not that bad considering it brings not only cholesterol but also triglyceride, depending on the context, if trig is also high while LDL-P is high then you have some problem. And no, I am not on Keto.
@@monokumannius4522 That's not what the science says. High Apo(B) and/or high LDL-P are very significant markers for predicting artery disease (risk of heart attack and/or stroke). These markers are completely ignored by the Keto/Carnivore community. A high number of atherogenic particles on the arterial highway correlates to high risk. The more cars on the road the greater the risk of a traffic jam/crash. If you can cite the study that says otherwise I'd like to read it because I doubt it exists. There's no such thing as having a benign elevated Apo(B).
@@DrMindyPelz Good book indeed! If a Keto-dieter has elevated (irrelevant) LDL-C but low (relevant) Apo(B) then hats off to them! Trouble is, not one major Keto influencer is talking about this. None provide even an anecdotal story of how they have high LDL-C but low Apo(B). They all literally ignore the #1 blood test for cardiovascular/stroke risk: Apo(B). Different diets may work for different people but science is science. Heart disease is the #1 killer and Apo(B) is one of the best markers to gauge that risk. There's no such thing as having risk-free elevated Apo(B). People who are insulin resistant have more small LDL particles. But for people who are insulin sensitive and who don't have lots of small LDL particles, risk tracks first with particle number not particle size, because so-called "large" LDL particles are still atherogenic.
Am doing clean keto. I was hoping you would have shared your recommendation for protein amount/threshold (mg per day) for that. 54yo f, 170lbs, been doing zone 2 training almost daily for several weeks (walking; 1hr - 90min, HR 130-140) and am starting to incorporate some strength training slowly. Also, IF (usually OMAD) with some longer fasts occasionally. I feel great, have ketones from 1.5 up to the 4's sometimes cbg 56 - 117 (low during prolonged fasts, high after eating, or after strenuous exercise) with average cbg 80. BP's normal, zero pharmaceuticals, some quality supplements. Do not crave anything and usually just not even hungry, but make myself eat to maintain nutrition, which I am concerned about while doing this diet (I've eaten clean organic for the majority of the last 20yrs; lots of veg and some fruits with moderate healthy clean proteins). I attempt to keep carbs from veg under 20, which proves difficult and am also a little concerned about not eating any fruit (have blackberries occassionally). I feel ya' on the boring...lol. But, that is ok with me for now. Knees have been bothering me lately; gotta' get some weight off of my 5'4 frame. I want to make sure I'm getting enough protein for muscle building. This is all for longevity, not expecting to become superwoman. Just want to be able to continue good health (no freakin' meds) and be able to keep working (CCRN). Protein rec's??? Thanks so much!
@@WhSpRz_366 Ya', got all them, lol...Thank you so much, though. It's crazy how much info is out there. But not all equal...I tend to gather loads of info and put the puzzle together for myself. It's a one page with diagram boxes that is very easy to follow. It looks pretty good from my perspective. I am already pretty much there with regards to keto and fasting. The thing with those is preventing muscle loss (the body will go after your muscles a little if one is not careful with protein intake and any strenuous exercise, which is why I asked her about the amount needed. I've seen loads of rec's on youtube that are all over the place. Keto and fasting are great, but us older folks are not a one size fits all. I'm going to try this downloaded muscle building thing out.
@@michelefarling6934 Thanks man.! I'm going on 45.. Came from keto now don't carnivore.. One thing I definitely do, since we getting older.. Keep your body guessing all the time.. Take a break from fasting, even prolong one's.. Take a week anger bring on some good amount of heathly carbs.. Fast for a 24hr.. You know how it goes.. But one thing I can say. If you're in your 40's or older you need more protein. We are losing muscles getting older. I'm with you on info being all over the place.. I'm like you, take well the info in and come up with a game plan
Book good for men too?? Been “keto” for over three years and cholesterol has certainly gone up but the blood sugar and A1C are awesome along with a major improvement in BP. Happy 4th of July!
Dr. M, am a person who eats everything but doesn't gain weight so easily but I have exceed the normal range of triglycerides by 57 so I did LC and IF (12:12, most of the day 16:8, and 18:6 once a week dry soft fasting) at the same time for almost 5mos really lost 4kls and my skin asthma is under control now. I don't want to loss any weight but to gain. Am just doing LC now no more fasting. Any suggest? I can do many things when I fast, i really love to fast.
And this is why I dont want to do keto again. I dont want to sustain it. I want the weightloss but do plan on eating carbs again. I think fasting will be my best bet. I lost 30 pounds with keto then gained it all back this past year. Its frustrating. I'm sorry, I just want to enjoy some carbs every now and then. LOL
Hi I'm low carb and always crave carbs but have added more protein to keep me full longer so..how do I keep it in balance? U know so I don't get high insulin spikes. I do seem to be more hungry but I usually keep carbs 20 or under. Occasionally I'll have a high carb day just so my body doesn't get used to the same thing

Man, I wish Dr M would have also reviewed the carnivore diet. I was keto for 3 years, and have been carnivore for 8 months and just have had the best results metabolically and mentally. I just wondered about the protein spiking blood sugar as much as carbohydrates. Does that just happen in the presence of any carbs as in the few we get on keto? Because in the case for carnivore, I'm the leanest, focused and most energetic I've ever been....all the opposites of high blood glucose.
She not a fan of the all meat diet, she's not against just not her thing.. Have you been checking your blood levels lately since you been on carnivore? Edit: I could be wrong, but carbs are part sugar as well.. Protein isn't and actually shouldn't spike your sugar levels
I lost about 75lbs in 2 years on low carb (under 50g carbs) with 18:6 IF. Then I stalled. I have been Keto (under 20g) with the same fasting routine and am going nowhere... Also my blood ketones are always below 0.5. and glucose is always 98-112. It's so hard to find a doctor who understands what I'm doing. Suggestions?
Are you eating fructose? I notice I store fat when I eat berries often. I think it's the fructose, especially in combined with saturated fat. When I tried a year of carnivore, I could eat 3 lbs of hamburger and not gain an ounce.
I’m so confused and frustrated! . I got a genetic test done and have the APOA2 gene which makes my body really bad at metabolising saturated fat (high risk of increasing BMI and cardiovascular risks) The optimal diet recommended for my type is a low fat, good carbs one. Any thought on gene variants and keto? A video on this would be super useful. Keto while limiting saturated fats seems to be a nightmare. Thanks for your help!
What's the down side of KETO? My doctor and the medical group I belong to say NO NO NO KETO. Why would they be so against it? I have a fatty liver, pre diabetic and no gallbladder. Feel like crap.
I completely disagree with your definition of a Keto Diet. A keto diet has nothing to do with the food that is eaten or the amount of carbs. A keto diet is a diet that produces ketones for a particular person. That is all there is to a keto diet. Ketones must be produced. Two people can be on the same low-carb diet. If person A produces ketones, then they are on a keto diet. If person B is not able to produce ketones on the same diet then it is not a keto diet for person B. The food that is eaten does not matter in the definition. The amount of carbs consumed does not matter in the definition. What matters is the metabolic state of producing ketones. If a person is in ketosis, then they are on a keto diet no matter the food. If a person is not able to enter ketosis, then they are not on a keto diet even if they eat under 40 net carbs and a so-called expert decided to call it a keto diet.
The question is what makes person A produces ketones while person B does not while on the same diet? Is it genetic ? If so, many choose to bypass this by reducing carbs as they appear to make it difficult to produce ketones .. I am sure people produce different levels of ketones even with little to no carbs
@@petrichor100 Great question. It could be genetic. It could also be exercise. If person A is training for an ironman triathlon and bikes for 3 hours every day it would have a great effect on his blood sugar levels. Also, it could be frequency of eating. If person A eats once a day, he can enter ketosis more easily that person B who may eat 6 times per day. Also, A and B can be the same person. If person A is in ketosis on a diet, but then stops exercising and gets out of ketosis, then person A is no longer on a keto diet, even though he is eating the same thing.
going keto makes you miss out of some very beneficial nutrients and vitamins from fruit and vegetables. Also one con with keto is Cholesterol. Problem is with keto that its much more for the middle class, blueberries are expensive aswell as grass few meat or butter.
How do you not realize that keto is a low carb diet? You're not comparing keto to low carb you're comparing one low carb diet to another. Please stop misinforming people. I think I might have a basic understanding as I've eaten a low carb diet for 30 years allowing myself 12 carbs per day and yet I don't eat a keto diet.
Create it, create it, create it create it. I am so grateful. I have discovered you the next 50 years of my life are going to be a cent. I wish I had discovered you in the first 50 years of my life. Thank you for my help and my weight loss. I have lost. Almost 30 pounds.

Hello, love your videos!
Do you need to stop fasting or low carb if you have an itchy back/rash. I have read it is because of ketosis. Thank you.
QUESTION: Are you referring to Total Carb or Net Carb in this video?
@@DrMindyPelz thank you
I'm trying not to get weight loss surgery I need help
I feel its hard for me to be on keto while resistance training and trying to build muscle, which is my goal.

@@michelefarling6934 any luck? I am also struggling to find a clear answer on what a moderate protein is
@@petrichor100 The link she responded to me with has a download. You basically sign up via e-mail and get the download sent to you. It is pretty informative.

How do this
What of low carb and Omad
@@DrMindyPelz omg 😳 Dr Mindy replied to me🤩. Thanks DOC I LOVE YOUR CONTENT SO MY
Book good for men too?? Been “keto” for over three years and cholesterol has certainly gone up but the blood sugar and A1C are awesome along with a major improvement in BP. Rhetorical question more then anything, but how do carnivores get such great numbers? #preordered the book, but have to wait until December!! 🤣If not for me, I have two grown daughters and a wife! 😊. Happy 4th of July!
Dr Ken Berry on UA-cam can answer those questions for you. He as alot of info on that as well Dr Shawn baker
Is it ok to do KETO PLAN 1 WEEK AND LOW CARB THE NEXT ?
YES
Awesome tks Dr Mindy
So how much protein should we get on keto? I lift 5 days/week - but don’t want to under eat protein either. Still trying to lose a good 20 lbs still …
I've been hoping she'd answer that question for a long time and I've yet to hear the amount of protein for keto.
Generally, popular ketogenic resources suggest an average of 70-80% fat from total daily calories, 5-10% carbohydrate, and 10-20% protein.
I can do many things when I fast, i really love to fast.

if i'm skinny can i go on keto?
After losing 110 pounds on keto I went to low carb diet and gained 55 pounds in 2 1/2 years
And this is why I dont want to do keto again.
I'm looking at this diet to increase my energy as i've been diagnosed with CFS. Will the diet cause me to loose weight? I'm already very slim so not looking to lose weight

Hi Dr Mindy, this is a question to do with my husband. He does 13-14 he fasts type 2 diabetic on low carb diet to control blood glucose. He has lost so much weight now lucky man , but now wishes to maintain and not loose anymore. How do I help him to do that? He could actually want to gain a few xtra pounds, x
Almost carnivore (with nuts). 30 days in no weight loss no great energy. I’m on Synthroid hypothyroid. Maybe it’s to much protein.

The few on keto as in vegetable? My understanding is that on keto vegetables would be the only source of carbs
Are you overeating protein?
Are you eating fructose? I notice I store fat when I eat berries often. I think it's the fructose, especially in combined with saturated fat. When I tried a year of carnivore, I could eat 3 lbs of hamburger and not gain an ounce.
But carnivore works how can u have to much protein????
I’m so confused and frustrated! . I got a genetic test done and have the APOA2 gene which makes my body really bad at metabolising saturated fat (high risk of increasing BMI and cardiovascular risks) The optimal diet recommended for my type is a low fat, good carbs one. Any thought on gene variants and keto? A video on this would be super useful. Keto while limiting saturated fats seems to be a nightmare. Thanks for your help!
Any thing lowfat for a woman is big pharma greedy hands all over it.
I just want my carots back
What's the down side of KETO? My doctor and the medical group I belong to say NO NO NO KETO. Why would they be so against it? I have a fatty liver, pre diabetic and no gallbladder. Feel like crap.
I thought Ketogenic Diet lowers bad cholesterol and ups the good one if you’re sticking to healthy fats? I feel the info is contradicting.
total carbs not net carbs
Last time I tried fasting for 24 hrs I passed out in the shower
All these diets it's all too confusing that's why weight loss is sooo hard
Black coffee is gross no sugar tea is gross green tea and matcha is gross
Hi Dr.
Would vitamin k2 + D3 break my fast
And magnesium pill
How do you not realize that keto is a low carb diet? You're not comparing keto to low carb you're comparing one low carb diet to another. Please stop misinforming people. I think I might have a basic understanding as I've eaten a low carb diet for 30 years allowing myself 12 carbs per day and yet I don't eat a keto diet.
60 yo keto 2.5 years. Plateau 1.5 years. Sucks.
