That's funny! Yes, I was like scrambling to find my old planners to see where I marked them with my period. So I ask my doctor and he had went back about 6 years and found where I had my very last period, day ending Feb 8 so I used that! I definitely have felt amazing getting my hormones back on track. I’m one of the people who has been complaining that I couldn’t switch over… I would fast for 36 hours and still blood sugars refused to budge and couldn’t get my ketones over 0.4-0.5. I am watching today on hour 72 of fast mimicking with avocados, green olives, almond butter, Evolve cups, LMNT salts and coconut milk in my coffee and I am finally at 4.0 on the ketones!! I am shooting for a 5 day FMD fast and feel so much better on day 3 that I really think I can make it. You should warn people about the muscle aches that occurred around hour 42… ugh 😢
This sounds very familiar to my case, I have only done the 48 hour fast once, but I didn't get the muscle aches. I will try it again maybe going 72 hours this time. I drink LOTS of hydrogen water (I have a hydrogen water maker). It helps so much! Thank you for sharing!
I have recently found you Dr Mindy and I’m so excited 🎉… I am 47 and just this year struggling with so many peri menopause symptoms, I started having night sweats about 4 years ago but that was it, everything else was ok (or seemingly)… now everything has hit me at once … irregular periods, weight gain, insomnia, brain fog…. Hi Emma. I had the same question as you about what to do when a cycle goes over the 30 days, and the obvious Day 1 hasn't presented itself yet. In Mindy's book it does allude to just starting again, so when I got to like Day 32 and my period hadn't come, I just started at Day 1 of the fasting lifestyle. It eventually came back. With peri things can't be predicted at times, so just have to go with the flow and listen to your body more about what it wants and doesn't want. I found that starting at Day 1 even though my cycle hadn't started was the right thing to do, as I wasn't hungry and the longer fasts were completely doable. If I felt hungry on any morning, and felt that I couldn't fast, then my body didn't want me to fast, and I didn't force it. Anyway, short story, yes, if you get to the 30 days, or whatever is regular for you, and your cycle hasn't started, just start on Day 1 again. If you get to say Day 13 then your cycle turns up, go straight back to Day 1 of the fasting lifestyle. Hope that helps!
I didn't do a dutch test but i watched a video by Dr Berg and it described what i was experiencing. I can walk for hours without getting tired but at home id get such a heavy feeling in my legs and struggled getting up the stairs. I didn't get out of breath, it was just the feeling in my legs. So heavy. So i knew i had to fix those high levels of cortisol
Get into ketosis: 1.Bring blood sugar down. Get blood sugar reader 1. Hormetic stress on cells - increase fasting timeframe 2. Intermittent fasting variation - vary your fast 3. Look at food you're eating. Eat clean food as possible. Dirty keto. Avoid harmful fats. Low carb and moderate protein. 4. Give your liver and gut some love. Castor oil pack to remove toxin from liver. Run a gut zoomer. 5. Adrenal fatigue. If under a lot stress. Do dutch test. Sleep longer or just cool out. 6. Toxic load is high. Detox.
I love your videos and advice, but all the things you recommend, like gut zoomer, dutch test, certain supplements, etc, are all super expensive! Most of us don't have that kind of money, unfortunately.
Yeah, I just do the fasts without any of the gadgets etc. Doing the fasts itself is the important bit, everything else are add ons that are not essential.

I don't understand why I am not in ketosis, but I've lost 43 pounds in 5 months, and my A1C is 4.9. My doctor said ketosis is not always an absolutely necessity, so I guess I'm a poster child for that.

Hi Mindy, I just discovered your channel and I am quite motivated by your understanding of fasting, intermittent fasting, and autophagy! In your videos, you share valid advice that one should work with their doctor when considering longer fasts and looking to reverse disease and lose weight. Unfortunately, my health network is a disaster. My PCP has a 1950's understanding of dieting stating one, that I must have given up, and two that I should lose weight by exercising portion control to reverse hypertension and pre-diabetes. The dietitian that I was assigned to also is against even intermittent fasting stating that it will definitely lower my metabolism. How do I move forward without even rudimentary support from the health system I am locked into?

I had a similar experience with my adrenals/cortisol levels and doctors. It's super frustrating and depressing. But I am on the mend (after many years of struggle) and have been intermittent fasting for the past several weeks and am starting to feel like my old self. I am menopausal so I have been also getting my other hormones in balance (with the help of a wonderful doctor that I finally found), which has helped immensely. It is a lot to navigate and it doesn't help when certain doctors make it feel like it's all in your mind. Another thing I did to help with the cortisol was really DEcrease my intense workouts/cardio and add yoga and pilates, which has been incredible for my mind and body. Wishing you all the best. 🙂
I too love all of Dr. Mindy’s advices and the valuable resources she provides. But I am at a stage where I can only fast 15-17 hrs and in rear occasion 20hr and I do have a vitamin and mineral deficiency of something always. I’ve recently only researched and bought electrolyte pack to drink. But still, just fasting has helped me a lot on my cholesterol profile but still figuring out my A1c to keep below 6.
I’m 55yo, 5 ft, 110 lbs. I metabolize medications very slowly, intermittent fast normally, and I’ve eaten very low carb for a year now, And it took me -while fasting on only water and wheatgrass powder for 5 days-3 days to get into small levels of ketosis, 4 days moderate, 5 days full on. As soon I started eating a keto diet my Ketones plummeted between small and moderate. I measured with pee sticks.
Hi just a quick thank you for your videos. They make such sense to me.and have helped me. I seemed to be stuck at overweight and tried a couple of ways to loose weight. One app just.caused.me to put on weight after advisor told.me I should not be doing intermittent fasting and advocated eating 5 times a day. I knew it was rubbish advice. The. I came accross.you.and have lost 6kg in just 6 weeks. Feeling really positive about myself now. I had lost hope.and was feeling depressed.bynhe idea of needing to diet. I used to fast. One day a week during my 30s but it got sort of lost in process of life. Anyway listened to you and did a.5 day fast and haven't looked.back. now I'm just enjoying the face I can eat or not eat and understanding how it all works. I loved your book so much i gave it to friend to read but then realized i needed another one 😂 so i could finish reading it🎉❤🎉❤. I vary my fasts so much ...i don't even know what the day fast will hold
For me, that’s been my “normal” for 10 years! I’ve read up on the “Dawn Phenomenon” and just don’t worry about it anymore. Again, we are all different, but for me…depending on my meals, daytime numbers range from 70-90, first reading in the morning is always between 100-115. I can’t beat it, so I don’t try. For me, this does not affect my A1C. I stay at 5.5. (it was 12.8, 12 years ago!) I do one 36 hour fast a week and stay at 18:6 the rest of the week. I’m 60 years old, I fast for metabolic health now, my weight is perfect for me. It can be frustrating, though. My only advice would be watch the carb intake in the evening and SLEEP! If I get less than 7 hours of sleep, my morning number can reach 130. Sleep was the key for me. Hope this helps. Again, this worked for me, we are all metabolically different, good luck and stick with it.😊
@@ldolan1802 Thanks for info! I think this is my normal though. My A1C was 5.5 last year and was 5.6 so I think I’m ok with the highs in the morning. Before Carnivore my fasting in the morning was 115. I was expecting it to be lower and was concerned when I seen the 130. I assume I need to just watch my A1C and not be concerned about my morning since it’s always been elevated. Thanks again!

Notes I took for myself - How to get into Ketosis: 1. Bring your blood sugar down. Watch the foods you eat leading up to your fast. More fat and protein. Less carbs and sugar. Be sure you have a blood sugar reader that you understand. Hormetic Stress (If Fasting is easy, fast longer. 2. Vary your fasts. Don't just do one kind. Go in and out of different length fasts. 3. The way you eat can help you get into Ketosis. Eat good fast and avoid bad fats. Don't eat too much protein or carbs. Just because a product says Keto, doesn't mean it's clean. 4. Love your liver a castor oil pack over your liver b. May need a Gut Zoomer Test to see if you have the right bacteria 5. You many need Adrenal support - Dutch test can tell you 6. Toxins can be stored in the liver. Your toxic load can affect your ability to get into Ketosis. You may need to detox before you can get into Ketosis.

Hi is this good for my 15 years old son. to skip breakfast. He is a competitive swimmer and practice swimming for 2 hours and 1 hr at 5:20 in the morning. He was doing marching band too. He gained a lot .. he is nearing 200 and was told by his doctor that he has a fatty liver… He eats so late at night after swimming after 9:30… the. he goes to school at. 7:10 to 2pm and then swimming at school and swim club total of 4 hours a day. can you please help me what to do first… thanks in advance
I'm not a doctor but I can see that his pattern of eating before going to bed is disturbing his sleep, above all with the digestion, the body doesn't produce growth hormone. This is a recipe to gain weight.
It sounds like he might need to eat little and often. He's a growing lad at 15 and active, so needs fuel for his body. If he's hungry before morning swim, then a banana or piece of fruit, then have oats with yoghurt & fruit, or eggs on toast with avocado after swimming before school. Does he have dinner before the last swim of the day or after he gets back? I agree that one shouldn't eat that late at night, and dinner be 5.30-7pm. If hungry after swimming at night, then no carbs or sugar, and maybe a very small omelette or boiled egg, or handful of nuts. Something protein but small. Even a handful of nuts before the last swim at night to top him up, then a hot drink before bed. I'm not a nutritionist, but eating so he gets fuel throughout the day, and last meal before 8pm sounds sensible so he's not going to bed with a full stomach that it can't digest or be burned off.

So what are the readings for ketosis please? Is BS at a certain level? Is it ketones at a certain level? I just wait until a very metallic taste in my mouth that makes my breath stink. Then i know i have switched. Hope im correct

That’s where I’m at too and what helps me is 1) making sure I get enough calories every day I do eat. 2) Adding amino acid supplement 3) try eating a higher fat vs high protein keto and see where you do best. For me adding in extra butter, more red meat, goat cheese helps. Also weight bearing exercise to increase muscle mass.
Sounds like me…I’ve been doing 18,24 & 36 hour fasts since June and could not get my ketones to budge. I finally read up on fast mimicking and started adding avocado and olives as snacks while fasting and it’s finally broken me into Ketosis. I’m at the end of day 3 heading for a 5 day … I just hadn’t pushed it far enough I guess.
Dr Mindy or anyone else who knows! I've tried to do the 3 day water fast three times now. Before the 72hr my ketones go too high, Why is this? Am I still getting stem cells despite having to break the fast before 72? I prep with lots of protein before I do the longer fast... I'm not overweight. I'm aiming for prevention of cancer as my mum and Aunt both died o cancer in their early 50s. I'm mid 40s. TIA
I should add that I was overweight before I started fasting.... lost 10kg in 5 months thanks to your advice.... Now I'm the right size but ketones go crazy so quickly.

By day 2 I'm at 5 and before the end of day 3 I'm in 7 but last time the meter just read HI....I was wondering if it means I just can't do the longer fasts? I started IF 2 months ago with increased exercises and lost 9 lbs, my lipid panel and LFT results improved a lot to within normal ranges but my H-A1c went up from 5.7 to 5.8. WHY?

Gut zoomed please. Been carnivore for over 90 days and having trouble to get and stay in ketosis. Read Fast like a girl and been doing varied fasts according to my cycle, but not much luck. First time ( only time) I did a 72 hour fast I made lots of ketones,(up to 6.8) but after that I'm only getting up to maybe 3.

That's funny! Yes, I was like scrambling to find my old planners to see where I marked them with my period. So I ask my doctor and he had went back about 6 years and found where I had my very last period, day ending Feb 8 so I used that! I definitely have felt amazing getting my hormones back on track. I’m one of the people who has been complaining that I couldn’t switch over… I would fast for 36 hours and still blood sugars refused to budge and couldn’t get my ketones over 0.4-0.5. I am watching today on hour 72 of fast mimicking with avocados, green olives, almond butter, Evolve cups, LMNT salts and coconut milk in my coffee and I am finally at 4.0 on the ketones!! I am shooting for a 5 day FMD fast and feel so much better on day 3 that I really think I can make it. You should warn people about the muscle aches that occurred around hour 42… ugh 😢
This sounds very familiar to my case, I have only done the 48 hour fast once, but I didn't get the muscle aches. I will try it again maybe going 72 hours this time. I drink LOTS of hydrogen water (I have a hydrogen water maker). It helps so much! Thank you for sharing!
Did you have electrolytes during? I heard if you don't during the extended fasts aches/ cramps can happen.

I have recently found you Dr Mindy and I’m so excited 🎉… I am 47 and just this year struggling with so many peri menopause symptoms, I started having night sweats about 4 years ago but that was it, everything else was ok (or seemingly)… now everything has hit me at once … irregular periods, weight gain, insomnia, brain fog…. I am halfway through Fast like a Girl and waiting for my Day 1 to start my 30 day reset but my cycle isn’t coming just yet… technically I am on day 38 …the longest I have gone without a cycle is 3 months… I guess my question is ‘Do I just start the reset or wait for my blood’?

Hi Emma. I had the same question as you about what to do when a cycle goes over the 30 days, and the obvious Day 1 hasn't presented itself yet. In Mindy's book it does allude to just starting again, so when I got to like Day 32 and my period hadn't come, I just started at Day 1 of the fasting lifestyle. It eventually came back.
With peri things can't be predicted at times, so just have to go with the flow and listen to your body more about what it wants and doesn't want. I found that starting at Day 1 even though my cycle hadn't started was the right thing to do, as I wasn't hungry and the longer fasts were completely doable. If I felt hungry on any morning, and felt that I couldn't fast, then my body didn't want me to fast, and I didn't force it.
Anyway, short story, yes, if you get to the 30 days, or whatever is regular for you, and your cycle hasn't started, just start on Day 1 again. If you get to say Day 13 then your cycle turns up, go straight back to Day 1 of the fasting lifestyle. Hope that helps!

I didn't do a dutch test but i watched a video by Dr Berg and it described what i was experiencing. I can walk for hours without getting tired but at home id get such a heavy feeling in my legs and struggled getting up the stairs. I didn't get out of breath, it was just the feeling in my legs. So heavy. So i knew i had to fix those high levels of cortisol
Get into ketosis:
1.Bring blood sugar down. Get blood sugar reader
1. Hormetic stress on cells - increase fasting timeframe
2. Intermittent fasting variation - vary your fast
3. Look at food you're eating. Eat clean food as possible. Dirty keto. Avoid harmful fats. Low carb and moderate protein.
4. Give your liver and gut some love. Castor oil pack to remove toxin from liver. Run a gut zoomer.
5. Adrenal fatigue. If under a lot stress. Do dutch test. Sleep longer or just cool out.
6. Toxic load is high. Detox.

Hi Mindy, I just discovered your channel and I am quite motivated by your understanding of fasting, intermittent fasting, and autophagy! In your videos, you share valid advice that one should work with their doctor when considering longer fasts and looking to reverse disease and lose weight. Unfortunately, my health network is a disaster. My PCP has a 1950's understanding of dieting stating one, that I must have given up, and two that I should lose weight by exercising portion control to reverse hypertension and pre-diabetes. The dietitian that I was assigned to also is against even intermittent fasting stating that it will definitely lower my metabolism. How do I move forward without even rudimentary support from the health system I am locked into?
So is fasting for 36 hours a waste of time if you don't go into ketosis?

I had a similar experience with my adrenals/cortisol levels and doctors. It's super frustrating and depressing. But I am on the mend (after many years of struggle) and have been intermittent fasting for the past several weeks and am starting to feel like my old self. I am menopausal so I have been also getting my other hormones in balance (with the help of a wonderful doctor that I finally found), which has helped immensely. It is a lot to navigate and it doesn't help when certain doctors make it feel like it's all in your mind. Another thing I did to help with the cortisol was really DEcrease my intense workouts/cardio and add yoga and pilates, which has been incredible for my mind and body. Wishing you all the best. 🙂

I too love all of Dr. Mindy’s advices and the valuable resources she provides. But I am at a stage where I can only fast 15-17 hrs and in rear occasion 20hr and I do have a vitamin and mineral deficiency of something always. I’ve recently only researched and bought electrolyte pack to drink. But still, just fasting has helped me a lot on my cholesterol profile but still figuring out my A1c to keep below 6.

I’m 55yo, 5 ft, 110 lbs. I metabolize medications very slowly, intermittent fast normally, and I’ve eaten very low carb for a year now, And it took me -while fasting on only water and wheatgrass powder for 5 days-3 days to get into small levels of ketosis, 4 days moderate, 5 days full on. As soon I started eating a keto diet my Ketones plummeted between small and moderate. I measured with pee sticks.
Hi just a quick thank you for your videos. They make such sense to me.and have helped me. I seemed to be stuck at overweight and tried a couple of ways to loose weight. One app just.caused.me to put on weight after advisor told.me I should not be doing intermittent fasting and advocated eating 5 times a day. I knew it was rubbish advice. The. I came accross.you.and have lost 6kg in just 6 weeks. Feeling really positive about myself now. I had lost hope.and was feeling depressed.bynhe idea of needing to diet. I used to fast. One day a week during my 30s but it got sort of lost in process of life. Anyway listened to you and did a.5 day fast and haven't looked.back. now I'm just enjoying the face I can eat or not eat and understanding how it all works. After my meal my bs is 80 but this morning it was 130, is that normal?
I eat once a day, around 2:00-3:00 pm.
For me, that’s been my “normal” for 10 years! I’ve read up on the “Dawn Phenomenon” and just don’t worry about it anymore. Again, we are all different, but for me…depending on my meals, daytime numbers range from 70-90, first reading in the morning is always between 100-115. I can’t beat it, so I don’t try. For me, this does not affect my A1C. I stay at 5.5. (it was 12.8, 12 years ago!) I do one 36 hour fast a week and stay at 18:6 the rest of the week. I’m 60 years old, I fast for metabolic health now, my weight is perfect for me. It can be frustrating, though. My only advice would be watch the carb intake in the evening and SLEEP! If I get less than 7 hours of sleep, my morning number can reach 130. Sleep was the key for me. Hope this helps. Again, this worked for me, we are all metabolically different, good luck and stick with it.😊

Thanks for info! I think this is my normal though. My A1C was 5.5 last year and was 5.6 so I think I’m ok with the highs in the morning. Before Carnivore my fasting in the morning was 115. I was expecting it to be lower and was concerned when I seen the 130. I assume I need to just watch my A1C and not be concerned about my morning since it’s always been elevated.

How to get into Ketosis:
1. Bring your blood sugar down. Watch the foods you eat leading up to your fast. More fat and protein. Less carbs and sugar. Be sure you have a blood sugar reader that you understand. Hormetic Stress (If Fasting is easy, fast longer.
2. Vary your fasts. Don't just do one kind. Go in and out of different length fasts.
3. The way you eat can help you get into Ketosis. Eat good fast and avoid bad fats. Don't eat too much protein or carbs. Just because a product says Keto, doesn't mean it's clean.
4. Love your liver
a castor oil pack over your liver
b. May need a Gut Zoomer Test to see if you have the right bacteria
5. You many need Adrenal support - Dutch test can tell you
6. Toxins can be stored in the liver. Your toxic load can affect your ability to get into Ketosis. You may need to detox before you can get into Ketosis.

Hi is this good for my 15 years old son. to skip breakfast. He is a competitive swimmer and practice swimming for 2 hours and 1 hr at 5:20 in the morning. He was doing marching band too. He gained a lot .. he is nearing 200 and was told by his doctor that he has a fatty liver… He eats so late at night after swimming after 9:30… the. he goes to school at. 7:10 to 2pm and then swimming at school and swim club total of 4 hours a day. can you please help me what to do first… thanks in advance
I would wonder about spending that much time in chlorine.
I'm not a doctor but I can see that his pattern of eating before going to bed is disturbing his sleep, above all with the digestion, the body doesn't produce growth hormone. This is a recipe to gain weight.
It sounds like he might need to eat little and often. He's a growing lad at 15 and active, so needs fuel for his body. If he's hungry before morning swim, then a banana or piece of fruit, then have oats with yoghurt & fruit, or eggs on toast with avocado after swimming before school.
Does he have dinner before the last swim of the day or after he gets back? I agree that one shouldn't eat that late at night, and dinner be 5.30-7pm. If hungry after swimming at night, then no carbs or sugar, and maybe a very small omelette or boiled egg, or handful of nuts. Something protein but small. Even a handful of nuts before the last swim at night to top him up, then a hot drink before bed. I'm not a nutritionist, but eating so he gets fuel throughout the day, and last meal before 8pm sounds sensible so he's not going to bed with a full stomach that it can't digest or be burned off.
I get into ketosis but my blood sugar is up and down daily like crazy.

I love the health benefits of fasting but I don't want to lose more weight....
That’s where I’m at too and what helps me is 1) making sure I get enough calories every day I do eat. 2) Adding amino acid supplement 3) try eating a higher fat vs high protein keto and see where you do best. For me adding in extra butter, more red meat, goat cheese helps. Also weight bearing exercise to increase muscle mass.

Dr.Mindy,I just got on ketones almost after 38 hours.I can't get on ketones with 18,24 hours.Why?
Sounds like me…I’ve been doing 18,24 & 36 hour fasts since June and could not get my ketones to budge. I finally read up on fast mimicking and started adding avocado and olives as snacks while fasting and it’s finally broken me into Ketosis. I’m at the end of day 3 heading for a 5 day … I just hadn’t pushed it far enough I guess.
That’s super interesting. I thought ketones were impossible with any food landing in the gut.
Dr Mindy or anyone else who knows! I've tried to do the 3 day water fast three times now. Before the 72hr my ketones go too high, Why is this? Am I still getting stem cells despite having to break the fast before 72? I prep with lots of protein before I do the longer fast... I'm not overweight. I'm aiming for prevention of cancer as my mum and Aunt both died o cancer in their early 50s. I'm mid 40s. TIA
I should add that I was overweight before I started fasting.... lost 10kg in 5 months thanks to your advice.... Now I'm the right size but ketones go crazy so quickly.

How abot in case I can eat a bit avocado, or peanut butter, or olive oil when I feel I need to eat during this first 17 hrs? Thank you.

I started IF 2 months ago with increased exercises and lost 9 lbs, my lipid panel and LFT results improved a lot to within normal ranges but my H-A1c went up from 5.7 to 5.8. WHY?

Gut zoomed please. Been carnivore for over 90 days and having trouble to get and stay in ketosis. Read Fast like a girl and been doing varied fasts according to my cycle, but not much luck. First time ( only time) I did a 72 hour fast I made lots of ketones,(up to 6.8) but after that I'm only getting up to maybe 3.

My first and only 72hr fast was hard!!! Since then ( 3 weeks ago) I've lost and gained the same 3 lb and now very stuck!
I 36 hr fast min of 2 day a week the other days 16-20 hr minimum

Thank you Dr Mindy! Another great video with great tips! When you have a chance could you do a video on High sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)in females. I just found out mine is high. I read somewhere that Fasting can help lower this along with fibre and zinc. I would love to know your thoughts on this. Thank you again for all you do!
