History of the Niqab IV: From Egalitarian to Imperial Islam
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 бер 2024
- The most important transformation in the history of the Arabs and Islamic civilisation as a whole, is the transformation of Arabs from an oppressed people into conquerers and imperialists. This resulted in the transformation from early egalitarian Islam to late imperial Islam. The Abbasids copied the entire culture of the Sassanids empire, including its slavery, harems, segregation, eunuchs, and niqab of aristocratic women.

This series was interesting, an article in Urdu or a research paper in English should follow this series. I sent you an email for a meeting or online discussion on similar topic for my PhD but haven’t got any response yet. The thesis is followed by a documentary film in which I am looking for your opinion on Islamisation.
Thank you Taimur for a detailed historical background. I want to understand further in the light of Quran as in Surah An Nur 24:31 states:
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments1 except what normally appears.2 Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments3 except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O believers, so that you may be successful.

If you notice, Quran is not talking about covering the face but covering private parts.

Wonderful effort professor. I have a suggestion. Please arrange a live online session. Announce it to your audience. Also, invite some islamic scholars who are of opposing views. A healthy debate on topics like this would be a great contribution

Dear sir when you prepare a lecture plz suggest some good readings as well❤❤
One more thing that you have missed, how this Niqab was made compulsory for All women in Islam?? Why the current Ulemas put so much influence on Niqab? When it got changed?
The Prophet has told us to do niqab. The Quran uses the word khizab to cover the face. Islam doesn't ask to cover hands but covering face is recommended and hair is compulsory. We can see the women from the house of the prophet.

Brilliant presentation. From USA
Can you present the reading references of views of Islamic scholars as well that share this view? Surely someone from religious circles would have given this a though other than your esteemed self...or are we to assume ignorance prevails across the spectrum and all are historically unaware to the case made here.

Hypocrisy?
As A mughal dependent ,
Many Mughals don't Know this fact..
That Mughal Used to have Kaneez women and when they have kids there identity is also identify as Mirza's,
But The children of Independent Wifes of Mughal emperor They named them as Mirza plus Baig..
Its a big Difference in mughal family Genealogical Family tree
Sir please consider this hadith about hijab from musnaf ibn e shaibah 6382. and Sahih al-Bukhari 146 From this you may comprehend how ayahs were revelead.
A small, but important difference between Anha and Anhu: Anha is for females and Anhu is for males.
👌👌❤️

Can you please make a short follow up or comment on the impact of Imam Ghazali and his contribution towards keeping women locked in homes and the 'fitna' of them being outside in public
Pls sir also throw light that acording to what you said, only elite class women had the tradition to wear hijab, and gulam women was not allowed to do hijab to differentiate between good and bad women....then after post islamic era, hijab or parda was made compulsory for women....that means that it was made compulsory for gulam women or bad women as well, not only the elite class....so that all women be looked as equal , whether she belongs to elite class or gulam class....is that right interpretation....
Waiting for your reply sir Taimoor....
You will be shocked to discover that it was not compulsory for slave and working class women.

How can you say that women who observe the practice of niqab are sideline from the main stream. Niqab is not a barrier in any progress a women desire to make. Its society backward customs and mindset that stops them.
Niqab was the dress that accorded with segregation of the sexes. The culture of the time was that free Muslim women (not slaves) were secluded from public life. This had the impact of restricting their domain to the home. And this meant that they were unable to pursue professions such as becoming doctors, teachers, lawyers, judges, scientists and so on. Today, Muslim societies have accepted that women can enter these professions, as long as they continue to wear some form of hijab.
Jazakallah for answering. I have finally listened to your whole niqb series and I also being in the same profession as you are. I loved the way you tell the history , with all emotions and expressions visible in your style of speech.

Hijab or covering the body is mostly related to the class and social status of women.
Londees/ Tawaifs never used to keep Hijab.
South Asian women never used to wear clothes same for the African ( Kaafir ) women.
Hijab is a Mesopotamian / Greek culture because they consider tall women with beautiful hairs/ eyes because they think having children with a tall / beautiful lady will provide them with good quality children.

A very interesting series. Thoroughly enjoyed and learned. Thank you for your effort.
Interesting and tragic that Islam allowed the Muslims to have relations with slave girls in order to protect them (strictly prohibited turning a free person into a slave unless captured in war). They had rights (unlike traditional slave girls) and the practice ensured that there wont be an unchecked exploitation and sexual transgression in society. And the later caliphs used the very religion to create an atmosphere of widespread exploitation of women owing to unchecked lustful transgressions of the ruling class of men.!!
Current interoperation of PARDA is totally influenced by the socio-political and cultural norms of those eras. Not Allah's book.
Sigh! Lectures like yours will hopefully enlighten women to wake up and sincerely try to decipher what Allah has commanded, and stop taking the word of Ullama; who never stopped to question whether what they are preaching is the true Islamic jurisprudence or a hodge podge of twisted rulings suited to please the rulers of the past.
BTW, women are still enslaved today in the Muslim world.....be it that its mostly mental slavery. But slavery it is!
