Why do we use the term "by heart" when the memorised data resides in the brain?

  • From times immemorial, the heart has been seen as a seat of human emotions. Poets have used the concept to explain love, anger, sympathy and many other tender and not so tender human feelings - but does the heart really play any role in generating or harbouring emotions? Why do we ask someone to learn something by heart when we know that the data that is so learnt goes and resides in the brain? This video explains how this expression came into being and why it continues to be used.

Dr Reuben Ray:Friends! Our stalwart senior as I address Prakash Shesh Esq. has different versions to explore and speak before us as hitherto unheard and hardly thought of in past by many of us. Learning by heart or rote, at times , I felt cumbersome and refrained still imposed upon by our school teachers. On refusal, we got thrashed and caned by our teachers. Never did I realize learing it rote goes with cognitive process but never to do it with heart. Something new for me to know...

Sarabjit Singh Kochchar : Sunny: Hello question mathematical tables we ask children to learn by heart even when there is understanding off why 2x2=4. We still say by heart. Changing to by head or brain will become equally acceptable if you take the lead.

We learn tables by rote (though we understand the mathematical logic) to help us recall an answer instantaneously- *like 16, 12 ja 192* - without applying our mind to the maths derivation - more out of memory recall (like maybe hanuman chalisa).
