21st-Century Watchmaking: Panerai's High-Tech Case Materials | MR PORTER

- In recent years, Panerai has become one of the industry leaders when it comes to creating watches from modern materials - fusing its time-honoured dive watch designs with thoroughly contemporary cases, demonstrating how versatile the Radiomir and Luminor can be.
This episode of About Time brings us an up-close look at two recent watches from Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee - the Luminor Marina Carbotech (PAM01661) and Luminor Marina TuttoGrigio (PAM01662). We explain why Carbotech, and the 3D-printed titanium of the TuttoGrigio, are such attractive materials for watchmaking, in every possible sense.

I have worn a Pam 661 Carbotech for 2 years now and it is absolutely a "next level" luxury watch making material. I have taken it on over a dozen dives and even hit it off of a bridge pier underwater and it left no marks. If I was wearing my Rolex DSSD, I would have surfaced to a shattered ceramic bezel and a few case dents. The Carbotech is still pristine even under a macro lens. My particular Pam 661 with its hacking p.9010 movement keeps a steady +1.5 second a day and a 80+ hour power reserve. I own a lot of spectacular automatic watches and this Panerai has spoiled me and makes my other SS models feel almost old fashion and fragile in comparison to the Carbotech. Stronger than titanium and more scratch resistant than ceramic. The tactile feel of Carbotrech is hard to describe, maybe a comparison is It reminds me of a light weight damascus steel. Build quality and fit and finish from dial to case is outstanding. There really isnt anything else out there at any price point that compares. For now, the watch is undervalued IMO.
I cant say enough superlatives about what Panerai is doing with Carbotech and their in-house p.9010 movement. Think of this watch as a flat black LaFerrari on the wrist. Tremendous performance and wrist presence for those that know, "know".
Both watches are beautiful works of art. Thank you again Mr. Porter.
Panerai is 💩
I have always looked down upon Panerai for some reason, but the more I look, the more I want one. I am getting very close to pulling the trigger.
Beautiful
Nice !! 👍
beautyfull
Please bring back the Style Clinic
If the Italian company makes these in 40mm or even 42mm, man o man.
Agreed!!! 40mm would be ideal in my case
Have you given a try on the 44 mm watch? I have 16 mm wrist and find it wearable
PAM00960 42mm :)
Grow a bigger wrist 😁
I am a longtime Paneristi. I one 19 of them. Value for your dollar, they are the finest luxury watch maker. You can, of course, buy better. However, Panerai has everything, in every case size, material an unmistakable style.
I bought two of them a few years ago and loved both. Then I wore other watches, smaller, lighter ones and now, going back to Panerai they are almost comically large and bulky. I'm a big guy at 6'4 so it's not really a weird fit in that regard. You've never felt that way? Like you want something sleeker or you get tired of the bulkyness?
@@ljuglampa No. I'm 5'11" and weight 230lbs so I'm no slouch either. Average sized hands but large wrists. Panerai suits even guys with small wrists but larger wrists and they look great. I have three in 18kt gold and they look extremely elegant. Takes the bulky edge off. I have a few at 47mm but most at 44mm, which is a perfect size. That's not bulky at all. I own 187 watches so I've got lots of sleeker styles by Vacheron Constantin, Patek and AP.
@@ljuglampa I have a 44mm Pam. I've been looking at other watches 40-42mm and they all just seem so dainty when I try them on after wearing Pams for 16 years. Sure I'll get used to a smaller size though.
👍👍👍😍
Looks pretty awesome in my opinion ... I don't know why some watch snobs trash Panerai all the time ...
Because they are not very well made... Never buy a used Panerai!
I'm no snob, but Panerai falsely advertises $75 ETA movements as in-house design for over $10,000.
♡
That’s a hell of a pitch for a plastic watch.
So million dollar hypercars made using carbon fiber are "plastic" cars, right? Bullet proof logic.
@@human7914 - You think that because racing cars are made from it, it has utility as a watch case? Talk about moronic logic. Whatever you want it call it, it’s plastic, and scratches like a chocolate bar. Total gimmick.
I think it looks cheap AF in plastic. Like a Casio...
@@SuperPussyFinger Actually you're wrong, clearly you have no idea what carbon fiber is or the contents of carbon fiber vs the "plastic" you are talking about. And yes, it does have an utility as a watch case because not everyone likes an anchor on their wrist. This makes a large watch wear like a 38mm steel piece while retaining the big easy to read dial.
@@PoltergeistWorks - There’s insufferable, finger-wagging know-it-all at every party. The case is made of resin (plastic), imbued with carbon fiber. It’s just like Fiberglas. Get over yourself.
Panerai makes the most beautiful watches 🌍
"Racing car brake pads..." are made from carbon ceramic, not carbon Fibre.
It's all about style and status right? Expensive and cheap watches provide the same time information. I might be wrong.
in this case, not exactly ... Diver-watches and Panerai in particular are built to withstand the harshest possible conditions even when it takes an accidental hit on a rock, during diving, etc. The watch will work just fine ...
... a "regular" watch however is not built for these challenges. Differences in price are indeed very well justified in many cases. I know what you mean. I have the same feeling when it comes to high value dress-watches. But Panerai is a tool-watch. People tend to forget that when Hollywood celebrities wearing these too...
@@istvantoth7431 thank you for your answer
Unfortunately I've seen som carbotechs that have disintegrated and started flaking the layers of carbon.
Sweet Lord, not another WATCH video...
The main motive is to check the time which any watch can do.
Very interesting design, case material and dial ..but sadly not a fan of the square shoulders, stepped in lugs and heavy crown guard ...if it were just clean and round then it would be a purist winner for me.
please go back to the cooking series
Man Cave essentials.
Grooming Tips.
Coffee and Cocktails.
Home Office Setups ... since, some people are still working from home.
And yes, cooking as well, since well, people are working from home.
One more watch video and i am unsubscribing
Very nice, too bad that at 44 mm they are way to big for most wrists. But anyway it is better than wearing small watches like 36 mm, no matter the brand, they look like women's watches.
Looks like a watch u buy from a flea market.
Great watch and looks cool, but just feels too light...
