    Dear Alexander (and Jean-Marc if you're reading).
    I don't often comment on videos, but I have to say something about this series. It was fantastic. I had been reading with dismay and disappointment about certain things in the watch media about Panerai. These videos not just completely put those rumours to bed, but also showed that Panerai are a brand that LISTEN to their passionate fans, and the transparency showed here was something that you don't often get from a big brand.
    I applaud Jean-Marc for the openness and the willingness to share the journey. I will once again be a Panerai customer.

    Spectacular work as always, Alexander. Thank you so much for this series. This was a great service to Panerai (and its fans) to showcase all that gives value to their products. I was particularly shocked by the Due tested to 20 bar and the explanation of Carbotech production was fascinating. As a longtime fan I got discouraged by the criticisms hurled at Panerai in recent years and hesitated to buy one as a result. I feel like I understand much better what I would be buying now. As a side note, I'm so happy the Radiomir line is getting attention again. The Origine models and the new Bronzo model are beautiful.

    Hi Alexander. May I ask your thoughts on the level of finishing of the movement? Going through the video particularly from 10:28 onwards, one can clearly see that the P9010 being assembled has lost the satin-brushing, perlage, blue highlights, polished beveling etc we have previously seen for this movement. As an owner of a Panerai with this movement, I do feel underwhelmed with the level of finishing compared to say my JLC at a similar price point or even my Omega Seamaster at a much lower price point. It does look more akin to the level of finishing of a Tudor but that’s understandable given that brand’s price point. Your advise is much appreciated.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 роки тому +2

      I can’t give you any advice concerning finishing, since this is “only” an optical decoration of a movement that does not add any technical advantage or disadvantage. Each brand/manufacturer defines his level of finishing upon the goals he has. Rolex calibres aren’t a beauty either and no one discusses this fact seriously, instead they all buy … are crazy about these watches…

    • @ryantannehill2830
      @ryantannehill2830 2 роки тому +3

      But Rolex has the sense to cover them. The OP is too nice, he's hinting at the bad reviews panerai have gotten for their cost cutting. Also, the statement of the movement decoration being unimportant is asinine.

    • @miguelangelojf
      @miguelangelojf 2 роки тому +2

      @@WatchAdvisor thanks Alexander. While it’s true that finishing doesn’t in and by itself add practical utility, isn’t it also true that’s what makes these watches pieces of art and craftsmanship instead of just mere tools? We don’t buy watches because we want tools (we have smart watches for that). But what perplexes me is that they have already been finishing their products at a higher degree already, why would they then stop doing so? I hope it’s not to cut corners? I was actually surprised that the carbotech Luminor Marina wasn’t well decorated given it’s price point.
      Agree also that while Rolex aren’t as well finished and therefore shouldn’t be at the same value as say Patek Philippe, they are quite well finished for their price point (at SRP not at the insane secondary market value). But then good luck with that.
      I’ve been a great fan of your work and continue to do so because of your candor and straightforward views. I hope you continue to be a force of truth in the industry and criticize when you see faults. The industry needs that honesty.

      @@ryantannehill2830 Nice attempt to twist my words … “asinine” … Never mind!

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 роки тому

      @@miguelangelojf I did not say that decorating a movement does not please us! But I pointed out that it is the decision of each brand/manufacturer to what extend they do it or not… Panerai can do better than this - I agree! What we saw is that in the moment all efforts focus on optimizing the accuracy and reliability of the calibres under real challenging and rough conditions. Panerai also seeks ways to optimize/harmonize production of its calibres. In terms of “optical efforts” adjustments are steadily made. The goal is to have a good looking technical decoration… I expect things to change for the better in the near future since they are not deaf…

I have been a fan of Panerai from the early days owning several references such as the 120, 111, 312, 307, 368 etc. With the current trend of smaller case sizes, it would be amazing if they developed a smaller Luminor (Not like the Due) but a reduced 40mm version of the classic Luminor with a sandwich dial. Thank you for making this video, Alexander. I do think an issue still remains to be addressed separate from your video series... the use of undecorated movements (P.900) like in their new QuarantaQuattro Submersibles. I would like someone to either debunk the claims (open up one of the new models) or explain how the brand justifies the use of raw movements. The pics that are out there are shameful. Thanks again.

    • @WatchAdvisor

      The P.900 is a platform-calibre of Richemont used by Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Baume & Mercier, MontBlanc, Panerai, … It is one of the most reliable calibres of the industry… But yes it could be decorated a bit nicer… also here changes will come I heard… so we will have to wait how Panerai reacts…

      You can clearly see this in this video. The P900s in newer models are not decorated and quite frankly look rather bad. The way to prevent that is to only buy older models or to buy an open case back which is precisely what I did. I love mine BTW.

    • @PeteNice29
      @PeteNice29 Рік тому

      Couple thoughts... If you're Panerai and looking to cut costs, using a quality-yet-less-pretty movement makes sense on closed casebacks. The fact is, you shouldn't be randomly opening the watch just to ogle a movement anyway, and they know that.

      You shouldn't service a watch until you have an issue with it or until the timekeeping is poor enough that you want it adjusted. Cost-wise, you're just wasting money. Watches are not that complicated. They will swap parts and do what they have to do to fix it. You would pay more servicing a watch twice every ten years when maybe you could do it just once every ten years. (If you're going in the water though, you need to pressure test it every year or two depending on how deep you go and how often).

      The boutique in London (any boutique worldwide) is supposed to arrange a date for your visit at the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The visit itself is of course free, but the costs to get there, your stay etc. you will have to pay for. This is the difference to a VIP visit ... then you are invited by the boutique also for the rest. So the doors are open, once you set up a date and you are in Neuchâtel...

    Have the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT. Love the watch and the look. Only critisism would be the writing "Power Reserve" under the 72 hour reserve function. It's not like anyone who has a basic understanding of the watch needs to be reminded that it has a 72 hour reserve. Pretty tacky and not needed on something you could consider a piece of art. Sort of like Monet writing on the corner of a painting "water lillies on a lake".

    I'm upset that they've downgraded some of their movements, but it's nice to know that overall the quality is there. My submersible doesn't hack (and it used to) and the finishing is much simpler than what they used to do. For the price, I should have a hacking movement, beautiful finishing, and a display back. But I still like the watch just because of the case design. I was willing to pay the price.

    Thank you so much for a most impressive & detailed tour of Panerai. Only now do I realise that each carbotech watch is effectively unique due to the case pattern created during the cutting process. For me, that makes them even more desirable. One question, did you buy the watch you dropped on the floor? 🙂

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! No, I did not buy the watch. This is the laboratory and testing area of Panerai… the watches there are supposed to be “tortured” under all aspects. The drop I caused was anyhow similar to the one the machine generates. The only difference is that the machine does this in a standardized way…
