Thanks, it first videos i saw on this subject all used extra topology raised slighty above the main topology to simulate a stensil, but this is much more professional
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was trying and trying to add freckles to my character and no video explained this process as simply and precisely as you. ***For those whose paint isn't showing up, make sure you have your UVs unwrapped properly and that if you messed with the brush settings you reset them all back to normal. Also make doubly sure that your brush is set to "Mix" and not "Erase Alpha". Another thing is to check & alter the XYZ sizes of your texture because it might be sized weird. Those are a few snags I hit!
03:50 To scale in separate direction -> Shift+Right mouse button, then while still holding these click on X to scale horizontally and Y to scale vertically.
Great to see this - Im always procrastinating on the various approaches and techniques to adding graphics/logos/decals to an object - This is yet another way of doing it and I wonder if you have any tips in your findings whether this approach has advantages over usual approach of adding say logo image png as image texture and unwrapping just the area you want to add the logo
I am attempting to add a stencil onto a 3D cube. The stencil is created using GIMP, 1280 x 1280 image with no background and saved as a PNG file. Using Texture Painting, I added the text onto the cube. The result is a pixelated stencil. Help to create a true clear stencil.
In case it happens to anyone, when I went to paint on texture paint mode, the alpha made the object invisible because I wasnt on DEV LOOK/MATERIAL PREVIEW, but on object mode. Kinda dumb to overlook it on my part.
Great video thanks. But I have one problem. I wanted to put a logo on a bat and ofcourse a bat is round. Now the logo is really strange, like it is not supposed to look like that. How can I avoid this?
Thank you very much for the tutorial! Love this technique! For anybody struggling with a distorted result: just figured out, the subdivision modifier completely messes the stencil up when you paint it. Not sure if that's generally with subdivision modifiers and textures or if that's just with the stencil. Maybe anyone can explain? But anyway, just apply the modifier and the stencil will work as expected
Ok this is getting frustrating now. I am following the exact steps, yet when I try to paint, nothing happens. I am in LookDev mode. I have made sure the nodes for the mix shader are input correctly.
can you clear my mistake please ... i have done the same till 02:38 but it is not working...when i am painting nothing shows on object except background color and in solid view i cant see that object ...it is only visible in material view
I had the same problem and figured it out. When you create a texture paint, make sure to create a really high resolution - e.g. 8192px width and height. That will solve your problem
I was nicely surprised to see that when you stenciled the fire logo in it came out red & black as per the design. I was expecting it to be white as per the overlay colour. Does that mean we do not need to concern ourselves with that overlay colour and just try to remember to leave the alpha blank when setting it up?
Well yes, what you see here is projection painting - white brush means to fully project the color of the texture to the surface. The text is white because it *is* white:-)
Thanks for these tutorials, always something new to learn. Is there an easy way to bake the textures from both mix shaders into one? I.E. if you're creating assets for games you'd want to bake the Diffuse/Roughness/etc. from both shaders into one.
Thx, well you dont bake to shaders, you bake to textures and import these into game engines. Here is an example video for this: ua-cam.com/video/mdcodiuIwXM/v-deo.html
G'day Jayanam Great tutorial lots of helpful information. Could you show a tutorial how to stencil detail for example scales on a snake or fish. Thanks Robert Murray
Hi there I was wondering if you could help... When I set the "Alpha" of the base color to 0 then my geometry disappears... And when I paint the geometry only appears in the areas where I paint.

How did you create that text? i found a transparent background image but when i try to use it as a stencil, it colors in everything, even the background. Can you please help?
Warning JAYANAM IS HERE...🤣🤣By the way great video....

Cool, thx!
Came here looking for another thing, and found this very useful tutorial. Thanks!
Jayanam is a scary name
Jahanam is hell fire
Thank you so much for creating this tutorial! I've been struggling a lot with creating "layers" and this has really helped.
this is the best tutorial on this subject, and I think I searched a lot. Thank you :)
You're very welcome, thank you !
Thank you! Super helpful. I was having a lot of problems with stencils before this.
Very well explained thank you for showing this.

Hey Jay! Great video. I'd like to ask you how far Blender texturing capabilities are from a software like Mari?
I hope you like, are you kidding, it’s genius, thank you 1000 times
This is fantastic, thanks a ton
Great tutorial. Also recommend looking at the mask tools addon for easier organization when using multiple layers.

i tried to make it but the result was very low resolution ! knowing the picture texture i used was hight brush resolution value

when I paint nothing shows up, this is before even loading my stencil. :/
can i use a video as a stencil texture?
good good güt
i tried to follow your tutorial but when switching to texture space the object is purple indicating no texture present
Check if you opened a texture in your image texture node.
does this work in blender 4.0
omg life saver
Hi there I was wondering if you could help... When I set the "Alpha" of the base color to 0 then my geometry disappears... And when I paint the geometry only appears in the areas where I paint.
more of that kind process !! go deeper please :)
I kinda miss blender tutorials that were like 5 hours of a guy doing retopo.
and how will i save this texture as png ? render bake it ?
This works great, ACCEPT, when I save the blend file and re-open it, the decals are gone, Why is this ?
You have to save the image files
I've figured it out. Once you've painted all your decals and while in Texture Paint mode, go back to Workspace settings and click on Save all images.
@@gerritgeldenhuys2763 Yep.
textures link is not in the description
