Some tips for psgs coming from a ladder player: 1) str lances are not the meta currently. Sacred blade holy lances are, doing about 700dmg per cl1 (this is against optimized armor and opaline hardtear). They’re completely gross and by far the most effective psgs setup. The main strength of using strength is access to flaming strike, which is one of the best offensive ashes in the game and scales best with str. People have also run offhand sacred blade holy lance mainhand flaming strike flame art lance in tourney for a more oppressive ash. 2) cl1 can reaction rollcatch, so if you want to be competitive with the weapon, rollcatching on prediction won’t be enough. You have to learn to be able to react to the roll and catch it, as well as pressure your opponent enough that they want to roll out of your range. If your pressure is too weak, a good player will either mash into (which you aren’t fast enough to beat) or they’ll just wait til you pull the trigger and reaction roll the cl1. Only cl1 in their face when they’re really feeling the pressure and trying to react. If you have them like this, you can also mix in a cr1 freeaimed to the right, which is unreactable. Of course make sure to blend all of your attacks. 3) freeaim your attacks to optimize range. Freeaim down for horizontal reach, and freeaim up to antiair consistently. If your opponent keeps jumping out of hitstun, aim up and your cl1 will catch them and they will be heavily disincentivized from jumping again. 3) cold lances should be used on an int build. Chilling mist offhand, and generally either hoarfrost stomp or ice spear mainhand. After a proc, swap to magic lances (I use phalanx offhand Loretta’s slash mainhand) for nuke damage. Approx. 650 cl1 dmg. If they really want a bolus, just stick to the frost and make sure to stay within the range that you can reaction punish bloluses with a jl1 (it’s pretty far, it’s a great move). I would generally recommend int lances overall for the best hardswaps and status pressure. 4) when playing against psgs, avoid trades at all costs. That being said, there are ways to pressure even when you’re in the middle of a vortex. If your opponent is trying to rollcatch, you’ll always have time to get out a sham r1/ts r1/offdagger l1 and roll. Just have to be very careful that they don’t peel and punish the mash. In addition to that, just always roll the jl1s unless you’re absolutely sure you’ve spaced it. They reach monstrously far and punishing it is not worth the damage you risk. Keep this in mind if you’re looking to bolus. The two biggest skills to practice with psgs is neutral and vortex. Basically, the ability to safely land the first hit, and the ability to convert that into additional hits. If you can do those two things, you can really put the hurt on.
“I’m teching! I’m teching” I love the addition of two handing the greatbow before landing i didn’t realize other ppl were still doing that as well 1:47 ps this is literally my exact outfit and setup

Great in-depth vid on psgs! I've found the matchup to be manageable with the Urumi, especially when utilizing the whip's fading JR1. As you mention, the weapon has poor tracking, and this extends to vertical tracking too. With the whip's range, you can jump away and still retaliate with the whip's jr1. This still requires good spacing to avoid the frame traps/vortex of the psgs player, but I'm fairly confident vs psgs players now. I'll give this setup a try with all the advice in this vid. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the guide. I didn't know the delayed cl1 after roll and after learning it, it is nasty. I changed my hours of play and for some reason, I am losing a lot more frequently. I think it's because I am fighting Euro players and that ping makes psgs unplayable. After switching to KGS flaming strike, my win rate improved drastically. Also, why do you think so many people hate psgs? Is it because its the noob killer and most people don't change their play style?
Glad to hear the video helped! Yea playing cross region really makes psgs a lot les reliable, since its so much harder to vortex or wiff punish. Psgs can do a fuckload of dmg but so can many other things, so idk if thats really why theyre so hated. I think aot of people hate them for many different reasons, whether they dont understnad the setup, they dont know how to fight it, but i think the most common reason is that echochambers exist. Its common knowledge that psgs is hated, so instead of accepting responsibility for their own misplays, it saves face to just blame the setup and not account for their mistakes.

This seems very relatable cz everytime i play with lag, it seems everyone knows how to dodge my attacks and knows how to beat me. I thought its ny performance that is declining. I had no idea this is related to lag.
What makes psgs so lame in 1v1 is exactly what you did here a lot. You basically never take initiative and just run around waiting for punishes, because that's the only viable thing you can really do, especially if your opponent is lightrolling which makes the crouch attack completely useless. What happens is the person who gets bored first and swings gets punished first and there's barely any real gameplay. But then again that's basically every fight. The 1v1s are just trash let's be honest here
@@Rust_BKTThat’s what he said. “But then again that’s basically every fight.” Definitely a more common playstyle with PSGS though, which was his point.
Does using a shield work to help close the gap against PSGS? I remember using shields aggressively to get into straight sword range back in DS3, but not sure if they're any good in the ER meta.
@@Rust_BKT Cool. I always liked using shields to help break neutral and stay on the offensive with shorter range weapons, rather than just turtle poking with them. Lot of people would just quit the second they see me spawn in with one though, lol.
What I feel is a little ridiculous about psgs is that they kinda have everything. They have insane range, insane stagger, insane damage, good tracking, and it boggles my mind how they can also have a cr1 which is this fast. But part of the frustration is probably coming from the fact that they’re that strong powerstanced. A twohanded gs user kinda seems more casual. Deals much less damage too. I feel changing powerstancing in general would help the hate a lot.
Yea powerstancing as a whole needs a nerf, but not having standing pressure and losing prio as soon as someone rolls your hit is what keeps them being balanced. When they hit, they hit, and they can vortex well, but they just cant compete with shamshir or thrusting sword, despite the damage discrepancy. That said. They definitely need a damage nerf

@@Rust_BKT Oh, certainly, and it's a crime 1.10 hasn't been iterated on yet. That said, I'm of the opinion that 2H should remain able to HA through paired. My issue of spectator boredom probably stems from your statement noting about only half the moveset is viable.

Lances are of the great weapons category, that's why their L1 is slow. I'm shocked that the crouched L1 still isn't nerfed after 2 years, it should never be that fast
Nerf the speed and its unusable. Its just 1 frame faster than other great weapon crouch attacks, its just the motion that makes it hard to notice. Plus, you have to buffer the attack, making it inherently worse compared to other options. Its strengths are its vortex and its damage. Nerfing the damage would be a healthy adjustment, but nerf the vortex and you fully kill the weapon.

I think i just didnt explain all that well. I go into it a little more in the showcase, but you might even learn a little more on their weaknesses from the flail video i just put out
Theyre viable, but heavy lance is just better imo. Silurias has a benefit over lances in that they have extremely good range, but they have split damage and cant be buffed like treespears can. Silurias is banned on ladder, where lances is not, so theres something to be said there. Theyre good. But ive never found the extra range they have to outweigh the utility or counter hit that lances provide on str.
Wonder how long it will take ER players to realize that 2-handed Moghs Greatspear is more busted than most psgs set ups due to bleed and HA dominating the trades.
@@Rust_BKT thx for your response. Could you recommend a weapon setup for me as a basic skilled player? I thought a Dex build with nagis or psss would fit maybe?
No matter how much I play this game, I’m still fucking shit. No matter how many guides I watch, I can never improve. I maybe win 1/5 arena matches all the time for the past year. It’s so frustrating and I hate this game so much now. I never want to play this shit again. I try and I try but nothing happens. Im still as bad as I was a year ago. I’m done
Im sorry to hear that gamer. It can be really tough, the game is full of stupid bullshit, knowledge checks, and spam, and it can be really frustrating when trying to improve. Take a break and maybe come back in a few months after the dlc to give it another shot, maybe youll find something about it that resonates with you
Int psgs is still extremely good with the strongest phalanx and great swaps (moonveil), however once you stack it up against the ones which are arguably broken (greased treespears, mohgs) it becomes less apparent. It's a completely valid option and flavor which is still better than 90% of weapons in ER
It's sill a gamble to fight against psgs. No matter how good you get playing against it, to get out of a vortex it's a gamble. Since the attacks are unreactable. It also has anti air so more often than not you can't neutral jump attack to escape their vortex. There are a lot of things that are unreactable in the game but these do **way too much damage** to be in that category. Your video did not change my opinion on them, but it did give me some knowledge. Thank you.
The community has not done anything to PSGS. It’s casuals that get skill checked lmfao. OffStoc is a funny matchup. PSSS sword dance also breaks fundamentals past 95 poise but hey nobody wants to cry about sword dance.
First of all, LMAO @ 17:53 Second of all, these ugly helmets @ 11:37 just aren't worth the couple stat points. How many matches do you think an opponent really lives with ~10 HP to make the ugly fashion worth it? I know they're optimal, but I just can't do it! Another great video 10/10!
@@Rust_BKT I don't mind losing at all when the fight is fun. Sometimes it is fun to play against, and I'm not knocking the playstyle or the skill involved. Specifically, I just find the powerstance crouch attack particularly difficult to avoid. I'm also just a bit salty about the thrusting meta in general.
@@heeverhashiscage seems reasonable. The cl1 is very difficult to react to, for sure. And if you get caught in a vortex, it can be really difficult to get out. Personally i find that challenge really fun to me, but we are all different. If youre struggling against it, i recommend trying setups like shamshir, thrusting sword, powerstanced straight swords, or halberd with offhand fist or katana. These all do a good job at keeping the psgs user from being able to safely roll in against your attacks. So they have to rely on really good spacing. But play waht you enjoy and im sure you can make it work with whatever you use
@@Rust_BKTin my opinion what makes them horrid is the fact that they cannot be countered casually. I go around in the arena or invasions with whatever setup I feel to try in the moment. If I meet a competent PSGS either I switch weapon entirely or die. No in between. Skills get thrown out the window if you use a weapon that can't deal with it.
Imagine a man walking up to you with 2 oversized powerstanced olive garden breadsticks, wiggling and crouching with various rhythms. You roll incorrectly once and boom, your appetite is gone. can always just 2hand to get the HA from that, but something like CGS is definitely better at keeping a train of people from mashing into you
Pls whats your buttonlayout
Is there an example in this vid of using 5:44 in a duel scenario? I'm a lazy ass, sorry.
yea, the fight at 21:00
@@Rust_BKT hmm, more like at 20:55 actually, tnx.
@@voidenjoyer573 ahh, yea, my b, misinformation
Siluria tree not viable even on strength build with some faith, but tree spear is for dex is?
Theyre viable, but heavy lance is just better imo. Silurias has a benefit over lances in that they have extremely good range, but they have split damage and cant be buffed like treespears can. Silurias is banned on ladder, where lances is not, so theres something to be said there. Theyre good. But ive never found the extra range they have to outweigh the utility or counter hit that lances provide on str.
Wonder how long it will take ER players to realize that 2-handed Moghs Greatspear is more busted than most psgs set ups due to bleed and HA dominating the trades.
Hahahha nice intro 👏
i honestly thought the input drop on attack+rotate or roll+movement would get fixed in two months when the game released... T_T
You thought fromsofts dev team would do their job? Thats wild.
new top tier tutorial

So if you say psgs is bad vs high latency I wonder which weapon setups are best for high latency
Small fast weapons that frame trap on backswing and have a low recovery
@@Rust_BKT thx for your response. Could you recommend a weapon setup for me as a basic skilled player? I thought a Dex build with nagis or psss would fit maybe?
@@derfloh8986 yea psss, 2h ts, and 2h cs
They're called "noob sticks"
Imagine getting owned by “noob sticks”, omegalul
@@Rust_BKT yeah you right dual pokies are vastly underrated my bad
where's my serpent-hunter maaan!
next to the flail where it belongs
intro was fuckin sick
No matter how much I play this game, I’m still fucking shit. No matter how many guides I watch, I can never improve. I maybe win 1/5 arena matches all the time for the past year. It’s so frustrating and I hate this game so much now. I never want to play this shit again. I try and I try but nothing happens. Im still as bad as I was a year ago. I’m done
Im sorry to hear that gamer. It can be really tough, the game is full of stupid bullshit, knowledge checks, and spam, and it can be really frustrating when trying to improve. Take a break and maybe come back in a few months after the dlc to give it another shot, maybe youll find something about it that resonates with you
Now do the 30 minute video on how to counter them for the casuals
How are you turning your character around without unlocking I don’t understand
holding sprint lets you rotate
@@Rust_BKT I love you
@@Rust_BKT fuck that not that just steals all your content
👍
This would have been a way funnier video if you just showed the crouch poke and then ended the video after 4 and a half seconds.
Gigasthiccas beat me to it
That intro is so damn funny
14:46 "Treespears banned in comp".. Yeaaahhh about that........
It appears i missed an update about that 💀
I just bait out parries or BS when they leave themselves open.
phalanx psgs on int probably the best psgs atm
shhh, dont tell em 💀
I don't know what that intro was but sorry that happened
me too
I’m Murkying 😭, God don’t remind me of that weapon please.
@TarnishedChimp_ Holy f*ck we're so goated
I guess int doesnt get a good psgs setup unlike other stats. I thought it was the third highest damage for psgs.
Int psgs is still extremely good with the strongest phalanx and great swaps (moonveil), however once you stack it up against the ones which are arguably broken (greased treespears, mohgs) it becomes less apparent. It's a completely valid option and flavor which is still better than 90% of weapons in ER
Yep, noot says it best.
Thank you.

Darth inVader
The community has not done anything to PSGS.
It’s casuals that get skill checked lmfao. OffStoc is a funny matchup. PSSS sword dance also breaks fundamentals past 95 poise but hey nobody wants to cry about sword dance.
It's not skill checked
It is weapon checked.
Either you use something that has a chance against it or you perish.
Terrible weapon
@@fangrowls6336 You have no skill, therefore you can’t beat the weapon. Simple

Honest setups only imo, none of that tryhard shit here 👇
@@Rust_BKT yeah, I only use psgs for mirror duels and the occasional invasion
First of all, LMAO @ 17:53
Second of all, these ugly helmets @ 11:37 just aren't worth the couple stat points. How many matches do you think an opponent really lives with ~10 HP to make the ugly fashion worth it? I know they're optimal, but I just can't do it!
Another great video 10/10!
Agreed, Lionel helm supremacy

BEASTMASTER!!!!
Now do a video on how to fight this fucking setup please
That was this video, wym?
Don't worry, the video has sections so you can skip the intro. You're welcome
Fighting against psgs and the like so often makes me dislike elden ring and want to play a different game. Feels extra good to beat 'em though.
Interesting, so if i hear you right, “you only have fun if you win”? Is that right? And why specifically psgs?
@@Rust_BKT Thanks, I'll try some of your suggestions. I did see some success with the offhand katana, dagger combo.
