One thing to keep in mind about partial parries: They eat your stamina. If you hear a scraping sound (or clinking, if you've got a knife), your green bar is probably now depleted. You'll have negated most of the damage from your opponent's hit, but you can only just stand there for what seems like an eternity, like someone just came up behind and pantsed you. In that sense, a full whiff is actually preferable to a partial parry, because you might still be able to roll away.
Great video and resource to learn parrying. Reminds me a lot of Sebbo’s backstab video for ds3. Setup parries are so annoying when you expect the 2nd/3rd R1 and they just roll away 😭
I remember seeing parry gods on UA-cam during the Dark Souls days. Finally sat down one day during a game of Dark Souls 2 and decided to really learn how to parry. That was the day I learned to parry bosses like Pursuer, I even got a message from another player saying I was a parry god despite me just recently learning it. Felt pretty good.
Thank you so much for this video! I was so bad at parrying that when I actually got one off, id roll away because id be expecting to not get one off at all. I just got off like 20 parries in the past 2 hours now, and my predictions are becoming a lot more accurate after the parry setup timings showcase. Youre a gem for this community, where its hard to find good resources to learn from.
Awesome video, very interesting and informative! I like keeping a dagger in the offhand, the dagger parry is much less reliable and more difficult but the opponent usually doesn’t expect the dagger parry and it’s so damn satisfying when you pull it off. The other day I landed this clean dagger parry and nearly one shot the opponent, he just gave up and accepted defeat after that lol

Oh absolutely, i had no idea what i was doing wrong when i first started souls games, and would go in and be so confused why parrying felt so weird in co op. Its really frustrating
about dual hts counter argument: if your opponent is running >92 poise, there's barely any reason at all to go 2-handed over 1-handed or powerstance, you still keep priority on R1 2 out of jR1 like when 2-handing(not that you're gonna need it for anything more than trades in this sceanario anyway) ohowever oyu do get a few quirky attacks you can use to throw of the opponent, like standing R1 being actually somewhat usable when 1-handing compared to 2-handing, or the L1 being usable after a feint as backstep L1 is actually somewhat passable and not that different from backstap R1. now, would using a shield or other offend be better in that case? yes, undoubtedly. but it's fun and better than 2-handing in case the opponent is running high poise. just please for the love of all that is good don' tuse the CL1, it's absolute trash, the first hit is somewhat fast but you get locked into the animation after wards and the first hit poise damage isn't high enough to be worth it, and to give them any range you need to be looking downards.

4:25 I learnt that while trying parry fight again Siluria. And I was also wondering that why none of the other videos mention parriable frames. I was pretty sure there was such a thing only if my simpleton mind knew what to call it.
Golden parry is weird, it has two properties which are the bullet and the parry property itself. From what i was able to gather from the frame data, it only has a parry property from 5-8, but the pullet persists from 4-10. Does the bullet actually cause a parry on those frames? the best answer i could give you is, im not really sure, but it seems that it doesnt, otherwise, all attacks that occur within the sphere of the hitbox SHOULD parry independent of the angle check, but it doesnt, so it suggests that the bullet doesnt carry extra parry frames.
This is an amazing breakdown. Well done and thank you! What’s your preference: parrying dagger or buckler? I’m struggling with my parries and can’t seem to consistently nail parries with golden parry
Buckler is "better" minus the lost damage. Rn I'm using the buckler to learn since partial parrys use shield blocking stats instead of nonexistent dagger blocking stats. I wanna get back to using a dagger for the steez
Having a wazowski with parry on it is the best way to escape the weeb pit where the white mask wearing, L2 spamming, dual nagakiba using tarnished reside if you're using a katana. I LOVE pulling off a parry, but I have an issue compartmentalizing the different latencies. I parried a guy with 600ms yesterday. Do you understand how goofy that looked? Of course, you do. I wasn't around for the riposte.
Again, lag is different from latency. You can parry on both, but you have to understand your connection, and if you use a setup parry, then no amount of latency will stop it from being successful
You probably know this, but ur fashion could be adjusted to add bull goat boots for 109 (assuming you are using fire prelate gloves on your Beastmans armor set up

So, nobody has a comprehensive list of what can be parried with regular attacks. In DS3 you could parry running R1 and rolling R1 for ultra/colossal greatswords Is this still the case?
